So I went to GenCon, and the Devs said....

Dave Williams likes Issue 5. That was the extent of our Issue 5 discussion. Another audience member started to talk about I5 a little, but I asked a question on a different topic right after that to avoid degeneration into the same stuff we all read here on the forums. I'll leave Issue 5 discussions from GenCon to other posters that may have talked about it with the NCSoft guys. I avoided the phrase "Issue 5" like the plague, myself.
[/ QUOTE ]
I find this disappointing, as some fruitful discussion may have resulted with the ability to get immediate feedback. I mean, I can understand not personally wanting to discuss issue 5, but doing your best to make sure no one else gets to either?
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, I bet the other five people were really upset.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, I doubt it. I'm only mildly annoyed, but only because I was hoping a couple of questions would get asked and answered.
It sounds like a bigger deal than it really is because this is a forum, and people naturally polarize or assume polarization on a forum.

I admit, Eden Studios is not one of the companies I follow closely, but I figured they were a cut above the "three guys in a garage" level. Then again, GOO's down to one guy, last time I heard.
Like I said, if it's financial issues or printing delays, I can understand. And the grown-up part of me can also understand about marketing and production.

Eden is bigger then "three guys in a garage" but it's still pretty small. I think the number of full time employees of Eden are still around a dozen. Eden also has a history of having trouble getting books out on time, due to printing delays, delays in getting licensed matterials approved, and a desire to release someting "right" instead of "fast".
Case in point: Army of Darkness was originally slated to be released Winter '03. It ships next week, although the PDF is available for download/purchase.
And unfortunately, Eden is small enough of a company that everyone is involved with everything, so if Army of Darkness is having issues at the printers, then it affects the release date of Buffy and Angel and Witchcraft and All Flesh Must Be Eaten and City of Heroes and Armagedon, etc.
I can also say that at Origins, Eden was asked to include information about Archery and Sonics for the initial printing of the book, which has added to the delays.
So, it's not just a "Let's release everything together!" ploy on the part of Cryptic/NCSoft/Eden/AEG.
THERE WAS A SEMINAR?????
%#^@$%#$(
Actually, Eden is two full-time guys. Everyone else is a freelancer. It only seems like more because some people (like CJ Carella) pump out a lot of work.
This is not a bad thing as they have plenty of freelancers producing work.
If they were asked to make additions to the book at Origins, that would indeed cause delays. Chances are parts of the book would need to have more artwork produced, researched and written (especially since Sonics and Arrow powers have been jostled around), and portions of the book probably needed to be re-typeset.
Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!
Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.
A couple more things...
Animated wings are never coming due to difficulty with animating them or something like that. The winged AT is somewhere on the horizon though.
We won't be able to ride in/on vehicles ever, due to the way the map is, but States seemed to like the idea of being able to throw the cars around...
((I was at GenCon too. Fun stuff. Spent way too much $$ :S))

To clarify, animated wings are not going to ever become a costume piece, but instead will be a feature of one particular Epic Archetype.

Really....so are vehicles off the list now? Or will they act like the train, click on it, get a list of places to go, then appear in the place you chose?
If they're off the list, that would suck.....

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, it will help quell the burning hunger in me...
The comment on Archery and Sonics does bring up the question. Is Eden planning to update the books or provide additional sourcebooks as future CoH Issues are released?
Hmm... I must go annoy the moderators at the Eden Studios forums now. The quest for content moves on!
Definitely off the list the Zones are too small to support players with vehicles.
The Idea of Winged AT got me pretty interested though. Would the COV equivilent have Bat Wings?
He did like the Idea of throwing stuff around but it was just a suggestion nothing official.
One thing I did forget to bring up was backpack/jetpack ingame anyone know if that's going to be implemented?
Can we get a confirm from a dev on this vehicle situation? Or did I already miss one?
I recall Statesman mentioning something about vehicles being used to get to a space zone, but I don't recall a statement saying "no other vehicles".
Man, I was really looking foward to the vehicle expansion, especially for all my "natural" heroes...
Thanks to the GenCon attendees for bringing this one up. It's big news for me at least. Well done.
we don't need to have massive tanks and all (tough that would be fun) how about personal sized vehicles, like jetpacks, hoverboards, sinister looking mopeds...
Personally, I don't like the plans to carry things from the CCQ and PnP RPG into the online game. They are trying to force people to spend money. I have time for either an online game or a PnP RPG. I prefer online at this time. Those who don't use these other products will lose out in the long run. I have no interest in novels, CCGs or RPGs. I can understand why they are doing it but I would rather they concentrate on the current issues in COH first, especially with a new MMO on the horizon.
20 years ago? These would be right up my alley... Today there is too much going on in family life.
Well thank you for the very informative post.
As for CoV, I will be passing. I am mostly interested in Issue 5 going live, and I have too many ideas still to put into effect in CoH...
The problem with CoV is...if I play CoV...I'm not playing CoH.
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!

I believe that such shouting matches tend to happen on the forums for several reasons:
* Lack of visual/auditory feedback.
* Lack of the possibility of immediate feedback.
* Dependent entirely upon the other party remaining interested in the thread
[/ QUOTE ]
And you forgot the most important reason: people on the internet like to argue.
No they don't!

GREAT POINT!
I can see Statesman's point about vehicles. I mean come on, everyone will ride in a "batmobile" if they do that. And with all the traffic and civilians and roads that make no sense of direction - it's kinda pointless. You won't even be able to pick up speed before you slam into a civilian - or cut a turn to close and - bam - you hit a stop sign. Unfun.
HOWEVER - personalized 1 man vehicles is a decent solution. Mopeds, skateboards, even as big as a small motorcross bike/motorcycle would WORK in the environment - cause it takes up far less space. Heck, I'd even go with Hero's riding on SEGWAYS. ;-)
How different is it between the purple slide vs a graphic for a SEGWAY? Hmmm. Hero is in stand up position and slides across ground, 2 big wheels and a stick next to his feet and middle of his body respectively.
And all these "vehicles" could come with an extra dimensional "garage". The animation for turning it off is, you step off yer small vehicle, pull out a metal box (think aide other) - open a smal portal, and your vehicle gets sucked in.
HOw hard is that?
Are too!

Wrong. Vehicles are coming in a future expansion and you will upgrade them through influence.

Yeah, you also have to consider the fact of how fast you can get across the zone as it is. Aside from IP, you can probably get across any zone in under 5 minutes depending on your travel power. This isn't like EverQuest where you need a mount to get around faster because everything is so spread out.
I wouldn't rule them out completely, however. We won't see them in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles, but perhaps some where down the line they'll add a space type expansion where we can have our own ships?
Of course, I think it'd be cool to just be able to design a vehicle to sit in your base. It'd sort of be like the tram. It'd be for looks, but functionally it'd allow you to warp to anywhere in the city. I know that they've said they plan to allow teleporters for this, but why not vehicles instead?

serious delays in small time rpg companies.. (and anything but WOTC and whitewolf, Steve Jackson are small time) is pretty common, there is after all not enough money in those companies to have full time employees...
