Guide to costume contests

Most of the time....the people who run them...do them to see ideas......to see what people have done...and also believe it or not they look for concepts.

Sure they are spreading wealth...being nice and having fun....but its also true many of the judges have other motives.

If anything i find it flattering to be copied.

I find that hard to believe, that people could be so bankrupt of any kind of creative thot as to have to offer up millions in infl and an hour or more of game time to come up with an idea for a character's appearance; I have *way* more ideas than I have time to make/play new characters, and if I want to check out combinations I might never have considered, all I have to do is hit the 'random' button a few times in the costume creator.

I know the Defenders of Paragon have run several contests and I have sololy run a couple or in conjunction with a couple other high levels standing around Atlas. Though I prefer to run em in my home of Galaxy since GC never seems to get any lovin.

Costume contests are great sense of community ... but I'm more apt to reward a team drudging the bowels of a Hazard Zone ... Heroes fight crime not show off costumes for influence in the community.

On Freedom I've yet to see a contest the was fake ..rigged that is another story.

BTW I've yet to see a Kheldian win a contest .. I wonder why .. so I assume it is a need for influence versus an actually GOOD costume.

My suggestion is to have a Panel of 3-4 Judges and 3 portions of the costume contest.
IE what I like might not be what my other half likes when judging.

Static -tradional stay put observations.

Dynamic -get that hero moving, do those new tights show off all the angles.

Combat -you have to look good in combat ..does that Skull fear you or what you wear ..or both.

Don't elimate higher levels thinking they don't need influence.

CoH is about having fun keep those contests coming!!

I am more inclined to award 1st place to a low level toon. For example, in the contest I recently held there was a level 37 with an incredible costume. You know what really pulled it together though? The combination of the mask with glowing eyes.

If ALL heroes had the option of capes with auras I'd wouldn't care about levels as much. However, in a costume contest I do have to take these things into consideration when looking at the overall picture.

That means you are a biased judge . . . just close the contest for lvls <10 ... but how do you know it's a lvl 50 alt?????

I came in first place yesterday in a costume contest. My winning prize?

2,497

Yep! Big winner over here!

On the other hand, a level 50 "Elite" subset of a huge SG on protector had a great contest on the same day.

They offered 1 mil for the best Technology Origin bio. This is a great concept and really narrows the field the of contestants down. And, it awards peeps for their originality and inteligence--possibly even sense of humor.

Not only that, but it was quite impressive to see those 50's there to hand out the cash!

I'm hoping a Natural Origin bio contest is held soon because my level 12 troller is need of some DO's in a bad way.

Overall, costume contests are fun way to goof off and take a break for 10 minutes (rather than standing by a mish door deep in the Hollows while hero after hero dies attempting to meet you there).

I like the guideline presented in this thread, though. I want to know how much I'ma git. And, I want to know who won--especially if it's me!

Isn't that what I said? Not giving low level players more consideration would be like having a slam dunk contest and having NBA players compete against 10 year old kids.

For the record, I usually only hold contests for low level toons.

In the case of the level 37 (while her costume did rock), her bio was lacking the patriotic theme I was looking for. Everyone was given 5 minutes to beef their bio up too. I still gave her a generous cash award though.

Indeed a lot of costume contests are fake but some are real. My friend and I have each won one. I have to admit I'm a sucker the title of this post attracted me.

Really? I always thought it was because I didn't have a nice chest as opposed to my lady friend...

The costume contests all follow this format. Someone announces a costume contest under Atlas. People line up facing away from City Hall. Lots of talk goes on, a person announces that finalists will be invited to a team, people break up and leave.

"But how," you're probably asking, "do I win a contest?" Well, the #1 thing that you should know about these contests is that they're all fake. None of them are real. Your leg is being pulled. Your chain is being ganked. In all my time, I've never seen actual winners announced. Sometimes, out of about 20 people standing there, I've known 15 of the people there and they all say that they didn't win. The finalists are supposedly "chosen" and people start asking, "Is the contest over?" "Who won?" "Why are we all still standing here?"

Don't waste your time. When a costume contest is announced, just continue on your merry way, secure in the knowledge that you're not going to be made a fool of. Of course, if you're a paranoid twit, you might think I'm trying to get you away to win myself. Rest assured that such is not the case -- however, if you truly desire to waste your time, you won't find me standing in your way.

In the last two weeks I have won 2 (over 1.5 mil) and been in the finals for 4 costume contests on Liberty server, with several different toons. Only one.. was a fake, and I knew prior to it starting the person was only running the contest because he/she had lost the last one. Some people are idiots.. but most contests are valid.

Most costume contests I go to, I lose. I admit i'm not very fashionable, but even if I get nothing, i still have fun. The only time I ever really 'won' was with my Technology AR/Dev Blaster that looked like a member from the Council (Not really, you'll have to see him to belieave it) and had a fitting bio for it.

Though, the ones that usually win in the contests I am in are the ones with the smallest waste, biggest boobs, and least clothes. Maybe a skirt for the panty aspect.

Other then those select few, every other costume contest that I have been in was amazing. I saw Dirty Toilet Paper, a stone/stone tanker with an all-white costume with dark green and brown marks all over him. He won first place in a costume contest for 'Most messed up costume ever'
