Wallpaper Contest Winners!
I agree that the first one's style is indeed more Rob Liefield's style ( I dont like that style, I was a jim lee, mag, adams guy myself, plus I hate Rob Liefield, he was a cocky arrogant tool when I met him at comic shows )
I also agree that number 3 really rocks imho, I love the sketchy style, and like I said, I dont know they used production art or drew it themselves, but I like the artwork. I like that sketchy style, as I was critiqued, yes my style is sketchy, that is what it it, perhaps you might want to look at some comics, you might see my style is similar to those, but I digress, I know you wanted to find every angle to slam me, so I can accept your review for what it was.
I would like to see alot more though.
Congrats to all.
The only one, so far, that I've seen an liked enough to put as my own wallpaper, is the one that won. So, I guess I agree with the decision.
Nice job everybody, even those that did not get posted. I am envious of your artistic talents.

2nd place: I think his entry should have been disqualified. The images in the background appear to be images from the most recent comic book. Clearly a violation of the rules on the site. If Im wrong about that then I apologize. Thats just how I understood it.
Rules: You can use the following to create your wallpaper entries logos/graphics from the Official City of Heroes web site, in-game images that you capture yourself, and of course, your own original work.
[/ QUOTE ]
After taking a look, I don't see anything in the rules specifically saying the contestants couldn't use images from the comic. They say you can't trademarked characters not owned by Cryptic/NCSoft, and they say you can't photoshop work and claim its your own, but they say nothing about being unable to use images from the official CoH comic.

You lost. Deal with it. Tell the winners "Good job, I hope you enter the next contest." "Next time I'll try and do better" and move on with your life.
If you want them to change the way they run contests, send them some PM's. Post here in a constructive manner, and stop giving out back-handed compliments like [ QUOTE ]
So like I said, nobody is saying that you aren't good, or your entry wasn't good or that anybody else's entry isn't good... We're saying that others created things better and it's ashame they didn't get the recognition that they deserve and that they've earned...
[/ QUOTE ]
Because it will do nothing but generate alot of animosity towards yourself and your "cause".
You lost. Deal.

Read the second post I made in this thread, then go think about how dumb your post is...
How I love when people respond without reading the entire thread - it's comedy at it's finest...
Whoa! It says what you can use in the rule...
logos/graphics from COH.com
screenshots you took
and your orginal art
I dont see COH Official comic in that list. Well lets consider the far fetched.
Maybe he found it on the COH Offical site!
Or perhaps he found the current comic ingame and took a Screenshot!
Wait I got it!...He drew the comic and its his orginal work!
Lets just try really hard and pretend none of the above is true. If you look a bit deeper the person broke 2 rules not only did he use media that wasnt in the Ok list but by scanning and manipulating someone elses artwork he broke another rule.
I mean just think about it why would you want to create orginal art if you could just scan some art from the Official COH comic and make a super duper hot paper?
As I said before If I'm wrong then I extend my deepest apology. However at this point I think his should have be Dq'ed for sure

OK, I'll throw in my thoughts on this and I'll be on my way...
First congrats to the winners...
Now with that out of the way, I must say that I don't believe some of the entries in the gallery and a few of the winners created something better than the things I've seen that didn't make the cut... I'm not going to point any fingers, but I do take this a little more serious than most would because I'm quite competitive and graphic design isn't just a hobby, but my occupation...
With that being said, I didn't expect mine to get posted because I had a grammar mistake on it, so that was that... However, I am disappointed that some of the works in the galleries got posted while a lot of other better entries didn't... Yes art is in the eye of the beholder, but things like having crisp images, good layout, a nice color scheme, and most of all being original isn't something that's very subjective...
So while I do offer congrats to any and everyone who had something posted, I offer even more congrats to those who had better entries that weren't posted... I do this because they truly didn't get the recognition they deserved in my opinion and for the most part aren't as mad as I think they deserve to be...
[/ QUOTE ]
I did read this first. I can sum it up this way,
"You guys won but we were better."
and "The best ones were the ones they didn't post"
Why would any of the winners accept your thanks when you spit all over them first?
Again. You lost. Let it go. Tell the winners "Good Job!" without making it a totally back-handed compliment and work on PMing the powers that be to change contest rules for future contests if you disagree with them.
"The man" decided that the other submitions would not be posted. "The man" judged the contest and picked the winners, not you or the other guy who started this mess. Take your tinfoil hats and move on.

Go. Nibble. Lick Cake!

If you would stop your selective reading, you would see that I knew I wasn't going to win after I submitted mine because of a grammatical error - thus there are no sour grapes on my part because I knew I wasn't going to win in the first place...
Secondly, all you're doing is repeating what I wrote in a negative light to try and make what I wrote something that you can attack in your posts - have fun doing it seeing as though you don't have anything to add anyway...

I'm glad y'all liked it.

Loved it. You should make a Mark II with Winter Lord in it; this will make it a collector's item when the winter event ends.

...I do have to point out that SweetThing was pretty much the first person to post and [censored] and his WAS posted there.
[/ QUOTE ]
I never put anyone's work down. They all were great in my opinion. What I did have a problem with was the apparent bending (not breaking) of the rules for a few of the winners. Allowing a second submission for an error correction (1st place winner) and allowing the use of other sources of artwork not listed in the official rules (2nd place winner).
I am an artist. I know how it is to have your work judged by everyone. The fact that I didn't mention mine being one that was posted should attest to the fact. I never said mine should have won. Let me repeat that....I NEVER said mine should have won. So. If you consider my post to be [censored], then maybe you should go back and read it again.
Congrats to all the winners, runners-up, and all those who submitted. You all deserve a big round of applause. Thank you Cryptic/NCSoft for allowing this contest and I hope that all of the controversy that's been brought up won't hamper any future contests.

When I read that rule, I didn't get "you can't manipulate anybody else's art as part of your submission". I got "your submission can't consist of somebody else's art with nothing but minor photoshopping, which happens in every freakin' online art contest and really annoys the bejeezus out of us."
I mean, the contest allowed you to use images from the website. That, by definition, is photoshopping somebody else's work. Unless you want to capitalize Photoshop and say "I used The Gimp".

Like you said allowed you to use images from the website to incorporate into your piece. Regardless of what program you used or how you incorporated it into your design. As I said in one of my previous posts if the comic book was fair game then what would be the point of submitting orginal artwork when everyone else had all the COH publications at their disposal?

What it says is: "taking an image and altering it slightly (via Photo Shop, for example), then presenting it as your own work is strictly prohibited.". In other words, you couldn't take a picture of Wolverine, color his eyes blue, then claim it was your own original piece of art. And he didn't alter the CoH comics. While he "prettied them up" layout wise, he never actually changed or modified any of the artwork.
Congratulations to the winners! I know that I wouldn't have wanted to be in the judges shoes. I'm glad to see the creativity of all the other players out there.
Here is my submission that didn't make the cut either. I worked on this for a while too and wanted other people to see it besides NCSoft.
Wallpaper 800x600
Wallpaper 1024x768
Wallpaper 1280x1024
Wallpaper 1600x1200

Oh yeah my 2inf, a receive receipt would have been nice. I know its the responsibilty of the contest submitter to submit their piece, but email can be so finicky that the best of us send it off with a wish and a prayer that it gets there.

Let's just say I thought out of the box, figured the comic was a CoH licensed image (since they display the comic cover on the site every month) and went for it. I must have done something right or I wouldn't have won second place.
As for contest rigging I was surprised as anyone to get 2nd place.
So thanks for all the gratz but really? Is the bumper sticker worth that much to you? After reading all of this horsesh!t I'm really feeling the community spirit.
**I like a lot of the wallpapers featured in this and other threads (fanboi - too funny )
Please check out the Class or Lack of Class thread.

LOL dude your funny! Umm when he prettied them up....he modified them. I have that book and I can tell you that thats not how they looked in the book.
Ive grown tired of breaking this down to you so we can just agree to disagree...cool?...alright great!
I don't think I claimed the CoH comic book as my own work?
Let me check...
Nope.
Truth of the matter is you did what you did...thats cool. What I'm saying is that what you did seemed to break some of the contest rules yet you placed second. I'm pretty sure you didnt set out to break said rules when you were designing your paper so trust me when I say that its not really targeted at you, but targeted at the way the competition was ran. So ill say this please enjoy your prizes, and your bumper sticker. I really can see putting a COH bumper sticker on my car...lol!
I dont believe I ever said you did.
Wait let me check...
Nope!
Everyone photoshop'd and altered images - no one claimed the 'load screen Statesman' image was their own (he appeared in many entries altered via gimp - whatever). I just used different licenced images.

that sounds like it was targetted at me?
Wouldn't everyone who changed Statesmans opacity have been disqualified? No, because they were using licensed CoH images to create wallpaper (as stated in the rules) I interpreted the rules differently and wasn't penalized. I didn't see anything in the rules that you were only allowed to use the above list.
And for some reason they put my screen name instead of my real name (I submitted all my info properly). As for the bumper stickers... Well, they'll make a nice gift for my obsessed friends
That image of the statesman can be found on the official site. In the manual which is on the site in high res. I never siad you claimed anything as your own. I said from my understanding of the rules your media source was not legit...this is all.
Honestly how could you feel like I targeted you i didnt even crit your paper. I just pointed out that It seemed to break the rules. Hey but since you feel like I targeted you then please let me appease you.
2nd place crit: While the layout is decent. The cuts on the 2 heros are pretty jagged. Also the grid pattern in the background is almost as knuckle kringing as lens flares. Other than that the pages from the comic pretty much made the entire image. Since this piece didnt get DQ'ed for what seems to me to be a rule violation. I would have to give it 4th place. I feel that paper 1,3,4 were of a much higher caliber.
Well there you go. Now you feeling targeted is justified. As I said before be glad you got second and have fun with your prizes. I couldnt wear the t-shirt anyway Im a fat guy...lol!
It doesnt matter all you won was a [censored] keyboard, mouse and more game time.. who deosnt have that? so stuff it.

HONESTLY, I wish all the winners would drop dead in their boots right now... LOLLOL.. i didnt mean that
Wow...feelin' the love in here. Are you feelin' the love?
This thread kinda proves people will argue about anything
There was a competition, the judges judged it, and the winners were selected. That simple
Please keep in mind these are just my opinions and I stick firmly to the belief that everyone is entitled to their own.
1st place: Good layout and coloring/overall color scheme. Someone compared it to Jim Lees style but I felt it looked a bit more like Rob Liefield. Definitely believe he should have placed just not 1st Someone also said he had the opportunity to make a change to his entry not sure what thats about but moving along.
3rd Personally I believe this is the best of the bunch. Very creative! Very well executed! This would have been my choice for 1st place.
4th While not very functional as a wallpaper. I can see the work that went into it and think its place in the contest is appropriate.
5th This entry just doesnt really feel COHish to me. Its rather dark and the layout is kinda odd. I also dont think the logo is in a good spot because many people have icons right there. The only thing that looks cool are the Kheldians, but I think the modelers and concept artist should get the props for that.
6th I cant be a very good judge of this piece because as soon as I see a PS lens flair I duck behind my chair and shudder in absolute horror. The paper also seems to have either a gradient overlay or lighting effects filter applied, and the results are a very murky looking. It also darkened the logo which didnt seem like a good idea for such a contest.
On a side note I noticed this on the Contest page:
Al l participants will have their entries and their forum (or real names) and city/state or province/country of residence posted on the Heroes web site (http://www.cityofheroes.com).
Now all that being said. Arent you glad I wasnt the judge lol!
THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
To all the non winners all I can say is accept it for what it is. You knew when you submitted your art it was out of your hands, as did I. Sure there were a few shady goings on IMHO but hey at the end of the day who really gives a $... Now you have a cool wallpaper designed by you and a mess of them designed by others. So have fun with it and dont lose any sleep.
