I am shocked that not ONE of the devs has mentioned Horizons so far.

    EDIT

Jeez, I put that there thinking no one else would've thought to mention it. Not only did they, but there's a mention of it just above mine. So much for me being clever.

    What a horrible, horrible game.

[/ QUOTE ]yeah dude, but you could play a dragon, trust me, that alone would have kept me if the preformace wasnt so bad too. of course, thanks to jay's beast head 6, reptillian tail, beast legs and reptillian skin, and demon wings, i really dont have to worry about that anymore. city of dragons for me

heres one, not a full mmo, but did any of the devs ever play phantays star online? that was an interesting take on the whole lobby to instances world game for a console, probably the most successful game of its type on a console, till the gamesharkers killed it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But the original idea would've allowed you to play Demons, Angels and Vampires as well.

[/ QUOTE ]i have heard that, and if i werent playing a game currently that let me do that, id really want a game like that, but luckily coh/v gives me my fix for pretty much anything bipedal. one of the reasons i see myself being here when they close down the servers in however many years. the funny part is we can make everything on that list outside of the water based guy,and the fairy with the right wings..and if a certain bit of info about possible wing types made already for the game is true, the fairies will be getting proper wings soon too.

  6. you know, given that even the player community does not uniformly regard the power changes as nerfs, it would be an act of defeatism for the devs to call them nerfs. some people will complain about everything, others have realistic expectations of how online gmaes work and dont get worked up in a bunch, perspective really.

Generally speaking though - the "political talking point" thing doesn't hold water with me. Yeah, so what if they could never ever make the law stick? It doesn't change that they're just making young people (in particular) look bad to older people who don't understand.

What I mean is, like all politicians - its just a play on "fear" - fear of terrorism, fear that immigrants will take over the country, fear that videogames will cause young people to turn into homocidal maniacs... fear fear fear.

Because fear is a motive force.

Realize it or not, they demonize young people like this because too few people are willing to stand up and question.

[/ QUOTE ] there is nothing new under the sun. im brought to mind a quote from famed nintendo designer of mario and other great games, Shigeru miyamoto" videogames are bad for you? Thats what they said about rock and roll" its been going on since elvis, since chuck berry, since the flappers, i wouldnt worry about them having any new ideas this generation.

    "Moral Combat"

    [ QUOTE ]
Joe Lieberman's quote in that is particularly ridiculous in the context that they presented it in. The game industry responded to his ultimatum by creating a ratings system. One that is, in my mind, just as good as those used by the Film and Television industries.

However, I do have to point out that Lieberman has said, many times, that the Game Industry impressed him with their response and the ratings system. They're taking him as much out of context as they are the video games themselves.

[/ QUOTE ]unfortunatly this is a fault of the gaming communtiy as well, people are so hung up on the fact that he Joe Leiberman dared say that violent video games need some form of self regulation that they paint him as some game banning freak. truth is, there has been no legeslation affecting games that has stood up to constitutional review, its a political talking point that you can carry to soccer moms who dont understand gaming so some oppertunists try to pass laws against violent games, but you will never see any law because you cant constitutionaly have one. Sadly to our aussie brothers, it seems you get games banned often for violent content, though in the case of postal 2, you probably came out the winner.

    "Moral Combat"

    [ QUOTE ]
I'm extremely disappointed that an image of Statesman would be used in such a way. I know that we designed City of Heroes to appeal to "children of all ages." My proudest accomplishment with the game is that many parents (including my brother) play with their children...sharing, I hope, the same joy for the comic book world that I've had ever since I was 8. I cannot express the shock that I felt seeing that a character created by Cryptic would be used in the same sentence as Columbine.

[/ QUOTE ] honestly, these guys are insane. im pretty darn conservative/republican and even i consider these guys zealots, theres nothing you could have done to prevent them from using the character in such a perverted way, they dont care. these fuys would take a look at nightcrawler and say that a comic was endorsing satanism, without knowing how far off base they are. really its the kind of people that comics warn against in a lot of their storylines as the first to persecute people they dont understand.
  11. i like the stories and gameplay, but the costumes are king, they are why i stay, and why ill probably be here for the duration, customization is king. ill play any game where i can be a dragon, and in here i can be a dragon who does karate, solid.[ QUOTE ]
The game needs to have more immersion. I would do this thru making STORY PANELS LIKE IN A COMIC.

You are assigned the arrest of Frost Fire and a small still scene pops up with 4 - 6 panels showing where Frost Fire has made his home.

You defeat Frost Fire and a small 4 - 6 panels pop up showing Frost Fire being lead away and your contact saying - THANKS!

Is this a comic book tribute game or not?

You have such a wonderful vehicle and you just touch the surface.

I like Flight, simply because it is the lowest Maintenance. Click the toggle, press auto-run and go AFK for a few minutes or chat with my SG.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm sorry, but is this a sick joke? Seriously, are you listing this as a positive? I mean, anyone can slow down if they want to. I could stand around and chat, then sj, tp, or ss to my destination.

That's like saying "I like fire armor because it really let's me appreciate the newer ragdoll effects and I notice all those wonderful psi attacks".

Doesn't this seem off to anyone else?

[/ QUOTE ]youa re taking it intentionaly wrong, when he means is that fly dosent require any of the maintianence that the other powers do, unkeybound sj needs you to keep pressing the spacebar, tp needs to be retargeted, and superspeed needs to be maneuvered around obsticles and to handle verticles. fly, whiles slower is a very convenient power, and thats what he was saying.

anyho, for me fly is, as i said, the msot conenient, need a glowie in a caves mission? just saunter up to it. going into a zone where the enemies will stop you, float overhead and hope that no snipers notice you. my primary reason i dont use it a lot is because i prefer superspeed on a concept level. plus with wings i see myself respeccing a flier or 2. plus if you wnat to do shadow shard, this is the power.

sj is perfect, i usually have to keep myself from taking it based on not wanting to be fotm, but the height plus the speed make it a beauty.

tp is a great power that drives me and my less than optimal system insane, i have it for a few characters for concept reasons, and its pre-power tp friend is great for lifelining with my defender, but it is a cruel mistress for slower systems.

super speed is a pain in the butt due to its lack of verticle movement and i love it, it fits my characters concepts so i suffered through the no vert aspect of it. the jumppack is pure joy though for a superspeeder, with it, im planning on re-respeccing my main hero, not that ss is viable again. plus, running at a mission with orange flames coming from your feet just looks cool.

We are NOT working on a Greek mythology game. Or an ancient history game. Just want to kill that rumour!

    [/ QUOTE ]
too bad, i think thats a setting you would have some significant pull in.
  14. i remember frontloaded missions, oranges at the door and a gray boss, i remember making jokes about quotas.

i remember the first time i made a joke about a "boy named tsoo" subsequent thousand times caused my sg mates to all put me on ignore.

i remember when martial arts really stunk..you think you have it bad now? the one kick was basicly flurry, the whiffing was legendary, and crippling axe kick used to do minor damage, because a stupidly long animation and a slow effect seen once every eclipse was compensation.

that and i remember ice tanking, and slotting for resistance on my first armor, and i wasnt the only one dangit... then we all noticed out that it was a def based armor and we were all running around really realy reisistant to cold..and that was about it. heck i remember tanking before armors stacked..and back when stone armor made you look like ambulatory poo.
  15. [ QUOTE ]
    Hey guys, a quick clarification:

The Invention System and the "Legends" System are "one in the same"...

Basically the Legends system, as it was designed, was not implemented, but out of it grew what will be known as the Invention System. The Invention System does what we wanted the Legends System to do, and a whole lot more, and lays the ground work for limitless expandability that the Legend System just didn't have.

[/ QUOTE ]thats cool, it would have been cooler to hear this earlier, like in the features update, but still, im guardedly optimistic, i have a truckload of alts to get to a respectable level anyhow in new faultline and scanner missions. 50's will be able to get scanner missions too(right?), so its not like rian will have nothing to do, badgeho-ahoy.

er..hang one one sec though, legends was supposed to be post 50 content, isnt the invention system going to be open for any level? it wont bother me, since for me level means nothing and my character will continue hi adventures for as long as i play, but i can see a number of people getting upset that this removes the specialness from the legends system, will there be some form of demarcation of what you can craft as you get to the hgher level, so that the 50's feel like they are getting some form of epic content. also, i was under the impression that legends content was going to contain a certian feeling of grandiosity, crafting...dosent, so will there still be some really exciting mission arc stuff for 50's in i9 too?

To me, the villain group that becomes a major threat to both sides will be Rikti with the unleashing of the Rikti Homeworld zone...

[/ QUOTE ]i was thinking/hoping for the coralax, and the underwater zones to appear. think of it, they are violent, so heores woudl be after them, and the villians are already fighting them, it fits. most likely it will be the 5th column, we have been told they were coming back, and they could threaten both heros and villians(heros morally, and villians because they are competition) so ill hope it coralax, but im expecting 5th column. i wouldnt mind rikti though.

Heroes dont have Mayhem or Newspaper missions. Issue Eight fixes that. Thats what he means about content.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    But...

Villains don't have 13 TFs/Trials (Not counting Respecs).

    Villains don't have 27 zones.

Villains don't have any Hazard zones.

Why does he feel the need to rectify one without commenting on the other?

[/ QUOTE ]i think we will see more side stuff as well, papers and mayhems use existing art, so they are easier, and they affect he pace of leveling substantially, new villian zonse definitly SHOULD happen, they just might take longer. some of the best zones for heroes have been the new zones with their running storylines, i would think it was a lock that vill will be getting new themed zones.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
The shocker is that it came from Cricket not Cuppa .

I have come to expect Cricket postings = bad news, and Cuppa postings = good ones.

[/ QUOTE ]you know, this could be a hysterical new contact pairing to add to the game, the contact is cuppajo, or some variation therein so that its obvious its referencing her, and every mission you have to talk to an insect themed superheroine krikkit. anyhow how it would work is every time you contact cuppa, she gies you this rosey description of this teeny tiny job states has and she tells you about all the cool artifacts, and heroic deeds associated with it, and then sends you to krikkit, who then reacts astonished to the description you got and proceeds to tell you about all the baddies and monsters, basicly lets you know that this is very likely the end of life in the universe as we know it , or how the good event has gone horribly wrong. example follows.

cuppa:good news rian frostdrake, the freedom phlanx recognizes your tireless dedication to justice, and thinks you could use a friend to help you unwind after a hard day's work, so we got you a puppy, states wanted you to have it, ask krikket where hes being stored so you can pick him up.

Krikket: bad news, the puppy played with luminary too long , hes now a mutated 8 foot tall warwolf, you ahve to go defeat him before he eats kings row.
(note: this could actually be used to unlock a "decorative" base item, a nameable pet warwolf who just walks around looking menacing, ala creature handlers pets in their houses in star wars galaxies)
    example 2.
C:the freedom phlanx has an oppertunity to get more in touch with nature, ask krikkit about it
K: devouring earth...lots of them, bring friends..and a lenient health care plan.
    ex3
C: we want you to meet someone , shes out of this world
K: Rikti eleit boss, and shes a magus, who was your next of kin again?

i figure it could be funny wether you get the reference or not. Whaddaya say?

    I'm scared.

[/ QUOTE ]dont feel bad, my younger brother is the same way, some kids with much older siblings are more historicly aware. i know my 18 year old brother has seen every marx bros , three stooges and andy griffith show episode that he could get his hands on. heck, i was even a jack benny(and of course groucho marx) fan for a while, a lot of older shows were rerun in the late 80's early 90's

ok you know you are old when-you remember changing the difficulty on your game by flipping the switch on the console.

200 is already an outrageous amount.

[/ QUOTE ]not really they tend to have very closely set spawn points and they respawn pretty fast, i know on peregrine isle there was a nice 5 present loop i did, by the time i opened the fifth the first had respawned, and i saw soem close points in atlas too, so its not a level thing

I was expecting on monday for this game to launch and we finally get some life back on these empty servers.. I know the bulk of the cov players were current coh players but what about all the returning people and the new comers? Shouldnt the servers be at least yellow? It is hard enough as it is to get on a team. Now I will be stuck soloing thru cov too?

[/ QUOTE ] ill admit id love to see more people playing, i cannot see for the life of me the appeal of that other game. i mean its basicly tolken retold by stoners, it baffles me how anyone could enjoy it, my 15 day trial was dull as hell.

but i so far have never really had a big problem finding a group, if you tag yourself as looking for a team you usually get a fast response, at least thats my experience. it seems that at least most pugs i have joined have had sane people in them. and this is speaking as a guy with 3 defs and 2 controllers, so teaming is of extreme importance to me.
  24. [ QUOTE ]
To be clear: the code for sharing costume pieces between City of Heroes and City of Villains is NOT yet in...heck, it isn't even written yet. BUT we'll do it after release - hopefully very soon after release. Then heroes can have access to the new options.

To be honest, this idea came specifically from this thread. Since people wanted the new costume options, I checked with Software - who said it could be done. Just wanted to let you know that yes, we do take suggestions!

FYI - for those who don't like the idea because villains should look different than heroes - remember that villains already have hero options. They can create a character identical to one that exists in City of Heroes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

my day is made, i was worried i was going to have to muck around turning my character evil, running to the villian icon, and then turning hero again:P good chap.

oh and stapler, i do have to disagree with your assesment of spawn as a hero, keep in mind i dont care for spawn based on personally held religious beliefs that spawn bugs me on, but spawn is not just a psychotic killer, he is played as a hero to those whom society has forgotten, the bums, the crack moms, basicly the weak that superman tries to protect but sometimes is too busy protecting the status quo to actually help, spawn is not a comic that i personally like, but i will give it a nod for delving far deeper into the issue of what makes good and evil than many cookie cutter comics.

i seriosly dislike your catagoization of good being pretty and evil being ugly, nightcrawler approximates my worldview of good far more than cyclops, and i think we can come to a quick concensus of which character is attracive vurses which one is ugly. in game the monsterous legs work for my main character, he is a half dragon, certainly not the first to appear either in american or japanese comics, and he is, if you read his bio, quite unconflictedly heroic. having a costume piece that allows him to look like he is supposed to is hardly a betrayel of any cohesive design.

coh's main draw against more limiting games has always been the ability of the massive character generation tool to refine your character concept as closely as you can to the one you have in your head. this only strengthens that ability.

i do agree that there should be a few, VERY FEW costume pieces that denote completion of certian task forces or missions that should remain hero or villian specific (though if they do the eventual betrayal/redemption mission, the waters get muddier still ) but even then im not sure i can name any one piece of clothing that tells me that someone is good or bad, a murderer can wear a priests collar and a saint can wear a convicts shirt, tis who is in the outfit that counts.

It's so simple I don't get what people are angry about, we get FREE updates, it's mind blowing people can [censored] so much about stuff they get for free.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Explain to me what the $15/month is for again? If it's just to play this game, WOW! what an ego they have. And new updates every 2 months with new maps and story arcs every issue release, im getting such a great deal.

Wow, I play BF2 and get missions, weapons, troops, maps, vehicles every update and for free too. And you can only play it online with other people if you really want to enjoy the game, but if you like bots, you can play single player mode. How fun would that be?!. Come on already!

    [/ QUOTE ]

comparing apples to oranges. every single mmo is that way, and usually are much stingier. compare the buisness model of world of warcraft, everquest 2, et-cetera. i dont pay for my morrowind mods either(if fact, it would be illegal to charge for them), but thats an entirely different kind of game system.
