A lot of posters have used this as a jumping off point for some rant or other, usually to complain about the ae changes, so the question rubs some nerves a little raw. It tends to be coupled with a "this game is dying because i cant get a AE pl team anymore" If anything, the introduction of the ssk system has lead to teaming being a bit more open, so those who want a team can generally find a team without a lot of exemplaring and sidekicking jostling. I look foreward to the first christmas event without slogging through deep grey conning enemies because nobody wants a freaking challange.

    Kindred spirits

well, i know 3, because i introduced 2 of them to it, and i knew some guys from the old electronics boutique that played, but they cleaned house because their district manager is a horrid person, so i lost track of them. I have met no other ones in the wild. I was surprised to find out how many western pennsylvanians play, from a thread in another subforum. well, not too surprised, the alternative entertainment options aint exactly boundless.

The one thing that really ticks me off is when someone tries to dismis another person's opinion with a cheap put-down, this is a great example. you have no census of the players, you have no idea what the "opinion" is, either majority or minority, and you simply make yourself look foolish claiming you do. The event is not meant to solo, so trying it solo would be unrealistic. it is a group event, simple as that, if your build is optimized and can pull a solo, great, but 4 focus points filled with spawns should give you some idea of how it is meant to be handled.
  4. starting tommorow is the first day i can play, so no, not tired yet. Though you shouldnt have to wait for it to end to get excited about gr info, herocon is this weekend, info is coming in 2-3 days.

For me, it was with pax, my triform peacebringer. "you want your kid to be a giant flying tapeworm, really?" also, i get a giggle any time an npc makes fun of my outfits...because they are more correct than they even know.

  9. I actually like that idea. If anything, crey seemed clumsily handled to me, too obvious they are an evil corporation, I'd prefer we start by thinking they are good guys and then find that they are...well, cliched. Frankly id wouldnt mind not seeing them out harassing people in bricks, too obvious, too many people have camera-phones, and you cant control all the news, Id prefer we only see their true faces away from the public eye.

i wouldnt say that. if the "tiers" correspond to access waves, then they will be the first to go, and it will probably be a fairly lengthy test. Im guessing full side switching will enrage the bug monster far more than even power customization did.

  15. I will admit that this one doesnt spring to mind as easily as the rescuing the negotiators one(unsure of its official name), where you get the melee happy pistol using general vurses warhulks. pre-clearing helps, but suspends belief over a cage full of angry badgers. the general(aarons i think) is just too fragile and engages melee with an opponent who explodes far too often. I can protect him with my buffer characters by giving him enough buffs to confer stupid-insurance, but my poor brutes, scrappers and blasters.

heh, one good thing about when i worked grocery. after being beaten like roman galley slaves for the first half of the week, we tended to get a light friday and saturday (who needs food after thanksgiving?)
  17. Well, if we are accepting powersets that werent there when the character was created, Id roll seraph blue as an emp/archery rather than an emp lightning, it just would feel better theme wise. also, space robot five, my ice/ice tanker would make more sense as an invulnerability.
  18. hey, check the subforum "the oceanic lounge" It is specifically set up for aussies to meet and chat, so you will probably gett he attention of a lot more aussies if you checked there too.

to be fair, if you were reading the us forums at the time, there was a brief but fervant push for all kinds of 300 inspired things that ranged from silly to potentially offensive in the modern setting(i recall one poster asking for a "persian" enemy group, im sure anyone of iranian enthnicity may have facepalmed a bit there) so it was a somewhat kludgy solution to a somewhat difficult request, but you cant exactly say that kludgy shoehorning in of historically dubious settings is exactly out of place in a comic book inspired world.

done poorly you may go crosseyed and break your wrist. i suspect the headdesk is the crucial element.
  22. As xaph points out, we dont know how the waves are being handled. The loyalty page mentions "tiers" of cb, which i assumed were analogous to waves, so vets should be in first, but that is just an assumption and could be totally off. Besides, so much changes during closed betas, a lot of info a player has, even if they werent nda'd, would be likely to be altered or flat-out changed by open anyhow.
  23. oh and i went to a fall craft festival and got my notoriously hard to shop for mother a christmas gift. a task of considerable difficulty. also got some spice mixes for me to try some kitchen chaos.

Don't get me wrong: I love how everything's been redressed to look new again (animations, power customization, new "booster pack" costumes, new Fifth Council TFs), but underneath it all its still the same old game mechanics that we saw in 2004.

No doubt, Going Rogue is going to be something special but its got the stage dressings of content folks wanted 3 or 4 years ago - not now. I'm glad to see NCsoft has reinvested in the game, but being able to play in a third-world "Praetorian Earth" zone wasn't at the top of many people's list. Find a way to raise the bar on the "I'm a hero/I'm a villain" gameplay interaction to all new levels in the current city/isle zones, and then you'll have a runaway hit that'll last for at least another five years...

And truth be told, unless you're a fan of the game who can appreciate the "Praetorian Earth" references, the average mainstream gamer who's never experienced COH before will look at this retail box on the shelf and give it a pass because its not exactly clear *what* genre experience Going Rogue is trying to sell them - but oh look, there's APB, WoW, Aion and many other titles that make a little more sense.

Me personally, I don't need Praetoria to sell me on "going rogue" between all points good and evil. I need the game as it currently stands to sell me on the experience of being extremely villainous vs. superbly heroic - and I'm still waiting. Get this dual environment fleshed out a bit more, and *a lot* of folks will come running to subscribe. Sadly, I get this kind of immersive experience more out of many console games than I do on a PC game like COH. Its not that PC games *can't* do this (because they can), but rather that they *don't* (ie. it's easier/cheaper to port an innnovative console game over to PC than it is to compete an innovative PC product against a console game) which is a serious mistake.

Feel free to dismiss me as a "hater" if it makes it easier for you, but I swear that I've been playing COH since 2004 until recently and that the only reason I'm taking the time to post this at all is to tell you that I (as do many other former COH subscribers) *love* this game - and I love the Devs for staying on and maintaining its evolution through since 2004 - but the original core premise (or "promise" if you will) of providing a "superheroes vs. supervillains" gaming experience has really gone off the rails by quite a bit - enough so that we don't really feel comfortable coming back as long-term subscribers until it's fixed.

Five years on, what's it going to take for people to stop being so dismissive of critical commentary and start realizing that its all said and done out of love and heartfelt nostalgia for the best superhero game ever made?

(EDIT: Man, I feel like such a [CENSORED] for even logging in to post this but sometimes you guys just really don't get it...)
well two points that i feel need addressed. First, while im not sure any of us can really claim that our suggestions will make the gamea "runaway hit" I'd say that the introduction of the alignemnt system at least strongly hints that there will be more heroic and villainous feeling content in gr. I cant really imagine how they would implement the alignment system without it and, if the prophetic email is to be beleived, there will be rewards for exemplary heroes and villains as well as those who switch, so while its still guesswork, I'd be surprised if we dont get the kind of content you are referring to. Subjective valuations will always dog good and evil systems, and with the large number of character concepts out there, no writing team on earth is going to catch everyone for a 1-50 ride, but it does seem that the effort is going in.

next, the discussion on pc and console games, and i think you are conflating terms and confusing the argument. The issue of some limitations on coh "cant change the world with yoru decisions, cant remove contacts, cant ever really have a appreciable affect on the world" aren't those of a platform per se, they are issues of a genre, mmos. I'm guessing the morality systems you are referring to are in games like fable, oblivion, kotor and such, and while significant discussion on their merits can be found whenever they are discussed, they have the advantage of being single player games, where the world is the one you and only you experience. If coh was a single player game(something id love, just have paid content packs and a limited online presence) then yeah, we could save croatoa and not get jumped by cabal right after earning their respect, and we could actually have the defeat of the rikti commander(tried spelling it, not pretty) actually affect the world, but the limitations are ones of genre, not of platform, and they are shared across the genre, you either bear with it or you ditch the genre. kotor seems like its going to try to take a stab at that, and i will be watching with bated breath, but i suspect that the mmo genre simply has issues that cant be fixed, and these are some of them.
  25. I usually ask about glowies if its not my mish because there is a very small extra reward for clicking some of them. but really its not a big deal.
