  1. I'm constantly getting to the end of the character creator and, right after it's too late, realizing that the origin I chose at the start of the process makes no sense with the character concept I wound up with by the time I had finished the costume. Given how silly origin is, I wish it was the last choice instead of the first.

  3. I hate those content farm things. They're just obnoxious. I agree it's weird to see an image from CoH pop up in such an odd place, but it's not a place I'd ever want to visit.

True, but just because something is less popular doesn't mean it's good either. My point is that it's silly to tell other people that their favorite game is crap and then wonder why they say the same thing about your game. The OP asked what is the mindset of someone who insults our favorite game? It's exactly the same as the OP's mindset when he insults their favorite game.
  5. You just called the most popular game in the history of MMORPGs "crap" and you're wondering about the mindset of people who insult CoH?
  6. I mean on the initial implementation they probably weren't thinking about it. Ever since someone pointed it out, they've ignored it. I'm just saying I don't think War Witch and Positron sat down at a meeting and said, "You know what we need to get rid of? Those gosh-darned multi-claim base item vet rewards. They've got to go!"
  7. I was wondering about this too. Those were the only items that could be claimed multiple times from among the vet rewards, and I guess that feature just didn't make the transition to the new email system. I don't think they took it away on purpose. They just didn't remember to preserve it. Doubt if it will be a high priority for them now, but I agree it's a nuisance.
  8. As I recall, the original implementation (back in I9 days) was that the market would steal everything if you didn't log in for a few months, regardless of whether you paid your subscription or not. After half a dozen issues or so they changed it so that nothing was ever deleted from the market as long as you kept paying. When they did that, I think they stopped clearing things from the market under any circumstances. And then they merged the markets. That was when Going Rogue hit, wasn't it? At that time they jiggled things around a lot, to deal with the change. Stuff bought and sold probably stayed still, but bids and items for sale were canceled and put into storage in the market, if I remember correctly.

What will happen now? No idea. But my best guess would be that everything will stay exactly where you left it in the market, but you won't be able to access it unless you resubscribe or buy the market access thingy.
  9. I may be weird this way, but I don't like to change my characters' costumes. After I spend 20 levels looking at them, I'm used to them. If a character needs a cape to look right, then I don't create that character at all, or at least not that look, because I wouldn't want to go 20 levels looking wrong. Not that 20 levels is as long as it used to be. Still, being able to put on capes and auras at level 1 will make it a lot easier for me to use them at all, and gives me a lot of inspiration for new characters.

Same thing with the second costume slot. Sometimes being able to switch costumes is a fundamental part of the idea of the character, so I'm looking forward to being able to do that from level 1 without all the fuss about Halloween salvage.

Now I just need a bunch more points. October is looking a long ways away, and they'll probably have a new powerset by then anyhow. What do they expect me to do, just buy a bunch of points???

Blood of the Black Stream! Avilans! City Vault!

Ok, I understand about Avilans, and the City Vault (though I still think they should just scale back the scope and get back to work). But I wish someone could just tell us what the heck they had in mind when that hint about the Blood of the Black Stream was dropped. I'm still dying of curiosity.

Yes, it has been a very slow death.

Oooh, and the original Super Secret Out of Combat System! The IO system we got doesn't bear much resemblance to the peeks of the original thing that was being specced.

    EDIT: FPAPP

The game is BIG. Everyone misses something. I told a designer the other day that you can combine two enhancements that are already IN a power (i.e. not including one in your tray) and they had no idea that was in the game. Been there since launch (or a little after), not many people know it can be done because the UI was set up for simplification in this case.
I've been playing continuously since beta. I know tons of stuff about this game. But there is still stuff that I don't know (I've never even tried the LRSF!), and lots of stuff that I knew, but have forgotten. And stuff that I still remember which isn't true any more (like the location of the Paragon Dance Party door in IP).

In general I'm much more familiar with the older content and system, and know less about the newer stuff like City of Villains and whatever that Rogue thing was. I'm sure I'll catch up eventually... assuming they stop adding content faster than I can play it. (Just need to complete the sewer trial and I'm done with all the content from Issue 1. No, not the Death from Below sewer trial, I mean the original Abandoned Sewer Trial. And I bet there are current players who have never heard of it.)

    EDIT: FPATH

    Want.
  13. There are a couple of items I hadn't noticed before: aura unlock and cape/back item unlock. Does anyone know if these are character items or account items?
  14. peterpeter

    god help me.....

If you want damage, then try scrapper, blaster, or any villain AT. The people I know of who solo AVs use scrappers or illusion controllers. Illusion/kin is it? I forget now. Anything can do ok in an incarnate trial from what I've seen, but support characters are generally more appreciated than scrappers.

Huh. I would have guessed that 4x2 would be less than 22.
  16. "Number of birds killed" is not the only, and perhaps not the most important measure of environmental impact. For example, I've never heard of a wind farm making someone's tap water flammable.

But in the spirit of the OP, here's a fun trick my high school chemistry teacher liked to demonstrate on new teachers:

EDIT: I mean, she would demonstrate it on their money, not on the new teachers themselves.
  17. I think all this legalese is rather silly. They all say the same thing. "We can do whatever we want. You can't do anything. Most especially, you can never ever sue us no matter what we do. If you ever blink then that blinking signifies that you have read and agreed to this contract, and to any modifications we ever make to it, whether we tell you about them or not." As far as I can tell, that's what every piece of legalese junk I've ever agreed to has said. My choices seem to be "agree to everything every corporation asks of you, or go live in a cave." /shrug. It's not my favorite aspect of the 21st century, but that's what life has become.
  18. Once upon a time, everyone loved to complain about the price of Luck Charms. They're used in low level accuracy IO's, so everyone just had to have them. Amazingly, this item that everyone just had to have was also expensive: maybe 50k each. Which is *far too much* for low level casual players to ever afford. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

A bunch of us got together and started hoarding Luck Charms. We farmed like crazy. This was before AE, so we mostly went into Dark Astoria and tried to max out our ZPM (zombies per minute). I still have an ice blaster around here somewhere who spent many hours freezing Hellions in Perez Park.

The plan was to pile up so many that we could satisfy every outstanding bid all at once.

I disagree. I think this concept art, while nice, has the exact same problem as the stuff that maddened the forums recently: it doesn't look like CoT.

In my opinion, the key defining attributes of CoH minions are:
    1. faceless.
    2. glowing green eyes
    3. baggy clothing/robes to hide their lack of musculature.

This concept art loses all of that.

Even when you're not talking about minions, they should always look like they use magic instead of muscles. Giving any of them this kind of musculature just feels totally wrong to me. I'm not talking about the demons, they can be muscle-bound hulks, but the humans should not look like they've dedicated their lives to getting their money's worth from their gym memberships. They should look like they've dedicated their lives to sitting quietly in a library reading books, mastering esoteric knowledge and plotting revenge on society.
  20. Sometimes I'll have one build that's good enough to be playable, but not really perfect, and use the second build for the fancy shiny IO's that I really want in my perfect build. It seemed like a good idea when I didn't have enough of the fancy ones to fully slot a character, but I had too many to conveniently store. Later, when build 2 is complete, I can gut build 1 for anything worth using on another character.

I can't say it's really a good idea, though. I'm usually better off just dropping the fancy IO's into my regular build piecemeal, even if it means I lose set bonuses in the short term.

Right now I think the only 2nd build I use routinely is on my main. The primary build is as purpled out as I have bothered paying for so far, and the secondary build is all SO's. I keep that build for testing or to prove a point. There's no doubt that the IO build is better, but I think most people overestimate the impact of fancy IO's.

As far as Weapon Customization goes there are options that scream science, high tech, low tech and even alien. In conclusion, Beam Rifle fits more origins than you might think and I hope players get inspired to make fun new characters.
What about magic? Shooting beams of energy seems like a perfectly reasonable thing for a wizard to do. I can't draw, and google image search was surprisingly unsuccessful, but I imagine something made of wood, with crystals and runes.

How about if you start with one of these things (plasma orb, according to wikipedia) up by your shoulder, then maybe a lump of wood covered with glowing sigils, then a set of spinning crystals at the dangerous end. The plasma ball would take on whatever colors the energy beam has. The colors of the sigils and crystal could be set in the costume creator.

    Arch/Kin

Offhand I think the redraw might annoy me. I've never tried it.

    Impatience creep

On the one hand, having the trainers double as tailors seems silly to me. I expect it's more about encouraging people to spend money on costume parts than anything else.

On the other hand there are some story arcs, like Crimson/Indigo, that drive me nuts with all the travel across zones. One problem I have with that kind of thing is that it's so unrealistic. How many times do you need to risk your life for those two before they hand out a phone number? Like the number of a cheap disposable cell phone is such a big secret? And even then, you still need to travel back and forth all the time because they insist on passing notes to each other and having a superhero be the delivery boy. Maddening.

And running up and down the streets of Outbreak, at the slow speeds of a level 1 character, was such a painful waste of time because it's so unnecessary. There are some things about the new tutorial that I don't like, but I'm happy that I can get from one end to the other so quickly. More width, for exploration and experimenting with powers and so on would be nice, but the length is just fine.

I don't mind some traveling, even across zones, but the original game had a lot more of that than we needed. I don't miss it.

(And yes, I know other games are worse. Ever play A Tale in the Desert? You could set your character running south at night and go to bed. You'd still be in the middle of nowhere when you woke up the next morning. And I actually enjoyed some aspects of that. Different places had different people in them, and different local cultures, because it was too much trouble for players to go far from home.)

I'm referring to the fact that unless you've got about 4 years of vet status behind you (as I understand it), then Free/Premium players don't get IO access at all in the current build, even generics.

So, if there are people looking at going free/premium and don't have the requisite veteran status, and aren't planning to buy the IO licences when i21 goes live, will they start offloading their IO's onto the markets? Or is that a complete random bit of speculation? And if they do offload, what would this do to prices between now and i21/Freedom launch?

The long term hardcore market goons aren't likely to be affected, as I suspect they'll mostly subscribe still, but this may mean a reduction in the market for IO's once it goes live.

Just something that occurred to me, that's all.
I would guess this is not going to happen much. People who are happy to play without IO's probably don't have a lot of IO's to start with. And why would they bother selling them? If you aren't using IO's, then you have nothing much to buy. SO's are dirt cheap these days. Keep a few million inf to start off with, and your freemium characters will never find anything they can't buy.

Personally, I was surprised that generic IO prices didn't spike the way I'd been hoping, though I did manage to sell a bunch of stuff I hadn't wanted anyhow. I spent most of the weekend in the kitchen, and when I was in game I focused on xp (and did rather poorly there as well).
  25. Ah, that makes sense. Thank you. What about that Incarnate power with the -Res? Reactive, I think. I think that's different, isn't it?
