Quote:Completely setting aside PvP (specifically I13 and its effects on the game's population) I'm of the opinion that the game's been on a slow but steady decline for the last 3 years or so, both in terms of quality and population. GR brought, far as I can tell, a population spike that lasted about 2-3 months and now it's back to being fairly quiet again. There hasn't really been a good issue since I12 or so (every time some new feature makes its way into the game it's accompanied by changes that crap all over powergamers), but thankfully I21 looks like it'll be changing that. No, I think it is laughable or pathetic, take your pick.
I think PvP is dead...
The *only* point I've been trying to make is that PvP has ZERO bearing on the
remainder of the game, and so, I completely disagree with the second part of the
thread's title.
In short, a few hundred people (ie. the pvp community) has no effect on the
thousands (how ever many actual thousands there are) of players still playing
the PVE content.
Someone earlier mentioned that 8 was ok in zone due to Maintenance that day,
but I'd just finished a full team Manticore run and there were several broadcasts
for ITF and LGTF groups, along with the usual "AE PL runs" - there were plenty
of people on - just none that care about PvP.
Of course, a few folks with extremely short attention spans lost track of the
actual point (and thread title), over debating the game's population (which regardless
of the actual "current" numbers still dwarfs the PvP crowd) ...
I think the thread title is only half right, and the second part is ludicrous unless
an actual correlation can be demonstrated.
Anyway, that horse is long dead, and were it anyone other than you, mac,
I'd have not even bothered to reply at all...
lolPvP sums it up perfectly.

PS> Would I like the devs to fix PvP? Sure. Will the game die if they don't?
Definitely not...
As far as further PvP fixes go, well, we'll see, but I'm beyond caring about that. I don't even play anymore, let alone PvP. Maybe if they make it so I don't rage simply because of awful mechanics every time I try to wander into a PvP zone, I'll wander back instead of spending my time in front of the Xbox. -

If you think eight people is a good, or even passable number, there's something wrong here. SC on an off day used to be as busy as RV can get during "peak" hours now.

Quote:The funny thing is this didn't used to be true, until they changed PvP to try and stop it from happening. This is why I pretty much quit PvPing. Because everything is cookie cutter builds nowadays.
The only reason it's really necessary is because all of your opponents have those things.
And I do mean ALL of your opponents. If you go into a zone with a toon built any other way, you're probably going to suck.
And even if the devs fix PvP that isn't going to change. There is always going to be one type of build that outperforms the rest, and I like to have some kind of choice in how I slot my characters instead of doing the exact same thing as everyone else.
But, aside from my rant, Supermax's quick advice is sound.
(Yes, I realize that makes no sense. That's the point.) -
Gained a few levels in Battlefield 1943 and replaced the radiator fan in my car. Pretty good haul for the weekend. Oh, and I took a Dom from 20 to 22.

Quote:Not so funny when you're the one being thrown under the bus, is it?Manga already posted what the cause probably is. I've also posted the logs for the exact same crash under Transgaming's G.T.L. code-base.
As to why it has not been fixed yet?
If you want a gut-reaction / opinion... NCSoft decided to throw all their OSX / Linux users under a bus; Making the game compatibility so bad or the barrier to run so difficult that subscribers would go find something else to do. Presto, everybody homogenizes and chants the "Oh Great Microsoft" line. Neither Manga nor I were invited to the Beta before the VIP beta, which meant that the two players who have given the most feedback / aid to the developers and Transgaming to locate and determine these types of bugs... were not involved in any stage before the effective "open-beta".
Now, I cannot answer why NCSoft made that decision, if it was indeed the decision they decided to make.
My personal opinion is that it was a critically bad decision to make. I do not think that NCSoft has the luxury of deliberately antagonizing any portion of their player-base, but that is what NCSoft seems intent on doing.
Changing the direction apparently taken by NCSoft likely won't be easy. As evidenced by the .NET launcher and the Linux compatibility problem, I've been banging on that drum since... well.. January of this year when Second Measure mentioned the "new" launcher. Did any other subscribers get involved in attempting to address the problem / send feedback / "do anything"? Nope, not until AFTER the launcher change had gone into effect: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=267988
Kind of late there.
Apple users are pretty much in the same boat. The development decision / resource management was already set in stone. Everybody was scheduled. Now that the "die" as it were has been cast, only NOW are OSX subscribers starting to speak up. Again... a little late.
Sadly, until or unless the non-Microsoft-Windows-Operating-System users are more Pro-active in raising living hell for design directions... NCSoft really has no incentive to change the direction they apparently have decided to take. -

Sleep and do Navy things.

That's a solid number (it'll probably be in the low-to-mid 40s after DR eats it) but you need to focus on ranged defense as well. I'd say ranged defense is far more important simply because most of the enemies you'll run into in a PvP zone are ranged - it's easy to avoid a melee enemy but not so much when they can throw attacks from 80+ feet away.

How odd that this game's population has been in a slow decline since right around I13.
-
Also, the game's PvP population is spread out too much already. The game needs less places for players to meet, not more (a good way of doing this is cross-server PvP zones or at least cross-server arena).

Here's the thing with the Mac mini: the graphics "update" the base and server model got is more of a downgrade when it comes to gaming performance. The GeForce 320M integrated chip in the previous models outperforms the Intel HD 3000 in the current line, though I don't recall exactly by how much. However, for the first time since the PPC versions of the Mac mini you can now get discrete graphics if you spring for the $799 version, which ships with a Radeon HD 6630M, which is a midrange card which should run at least some features of Ultra mode.

Updater and game seem to be running just fine under Lion right now.

DM/WP is not a good Brute build for PvP. Actually, there's really no such thing as a good Brute build for PvP post-I18.
-
I generally give Frostwork to melee characters, as they're the ones who benefit from it the most. Blasters and Stalkers can self-cap their HP and even if they don't most builds will come within ~100hp of cap when accoladed, which is a waste of Frostwork. Other squishies, maybe, but well-built those will have around 1300hp, which really leaves Brutes, Tankers, Scrappers, and MMs. People tend to forget about MMs but they have the lowest base HP (803 or something like that) and slotted Frostwork can get them almost to the cap even if they don't have their own +HP. Makes them not entirely super squishy when not in BG mode.

Quote:Keeping 2 ID's per Kin stacked on every person on the team would be bad enough given the stop-start nature of post-I13 PvP, let alone trying to do that while being the main target since you won't have enough KB protection as one of the two Kins.I could be off on the numbers, but for argument's sake, acro can be enhanced to ~12 kb with 3 SO's and increase density gives 10 kb. One of the higher kb powers I know of is force bolt with can be enhanced to ~50 kb with 3 SO's. So to counter it you would need acro enhanced and 4 ID's; I think ID kb stacks from the same source so it might be plausible to have 2 kins give 2 ID's each. Not easy to do every 60 seconds in the arena, but I guess my point is that most kb could be countered in SO pvp if the team planned ahead. Can't think of anything realistic that would counter powerboosted forcebolt though...

Does anyone take this power anymore?
