Looks fantastic Thirty-Seven. Thought of going that route (while standing by Blue Steel), glad someone else thought to.

Quote:This may end up mirroring what happens with comic book titles. CoH is a title like Birds of Prey or Secret Six or Blue Beetle from a few years ago. It settles at its sales level (say, 10k), sometimes perks up a bit but is generally stable or is just on a really slow decline. But it basically has its hardcore fans that will buy no matter what. Rather than stick with the book, the publisher decides to kill it to bring in something new (that fans may or may not even want). Some fail right out of the gate. Others sell great at first - say, 50k - but quickly decline. Maybe it's down to 25k after a year, 15k after two. And then *it* gets the axe. While I'm personally incensed that NC Soft is cutting off CoH with so little notice, I can see it from their perspective too. CoH has been on the decline financially for a while, and the latest effort to revive it with a free to play model haven't been spectacularly successful. I think population are even lower now than last year, even though revenue might be up somewhat.
So NC Soft has decided to roll the bones and try something new. It probably won't work, but CoH was clearly sliding downhill, so there's not a lot of down side from NC Soft's view point.
Again, I'm really mad that NC Soft isn't cutting staff slowly and letting CoH wind down naturally. I would have played for quite a while. But there's not a lot we can do, and the financials look pretty obvious. It the manner of the shutdown that has me torqued off.
From a sales standpoint it looks like it makes sense - you sold between 20k and 50k rather than 10k! Eventually it erodes the customer base though, as people realize there is no point getting invested in a title if it's not going to stick around.
In comics of course, that's a problem because the industry doesn't seem to be getting enough new fans to replace the old ones. I don't know if MMOs are at that point yet.
edit: I should say that this is the case for large publishers. Smaller ones I'm sure would be more than happy with a stable 10k-selling title. -
Heh. I passed this along to my (12yo) son, and even HE said "oh great, so what - they can close that in a couple years?"

My twitch skills were awful when I was young, let alone now. I lasted about 45 seconds when I tried to play Doom.

If we've hit Thailand, maybe we can hope for the Taiwanese animation treatment.

Hmm, I like that style. Here's what I was working on.

Tally me as not pro-voice. My computer is located in my family room, and I play with my wife and kids in the room, with the tv on, etc. I would likely not be able to concentrate on voice chat (which is fleeting, as opposed to lingering text), nor would I really like to introduce the extra noise (the content of which I can't control) into my family room. Headphones aren't an option, as that would serve as a communication barrier between my family and me. I wouldn't want to be speaking into the microphone, either.
I mostly solo anyway, but it would be a consideration for the times I do team. -
Quote:Have to admit I'd thought of that. Didn't have time last night to try to cook one up.Someone should design a stylized "33" logo or "AP33" to remember this event. Something that we, the players who were there and participated, would instantly recognize. Our little signal to say to others in the know, "I was there." I'd do it, but I have the artistic talent of a two-by-four.

I finally rolled my Dark/Dark controller yesterday - Indeterminate Fate. Would love for her to be the first to use the Sorcery Pool. Circumstances permitting, of course.

Super jumping, I like. Jumping as a puzzle? I got my fill of that years ago solving levels in Super Mario Sunshine for my then 4yo. I think I'd be fine never having to puzzle jump ever again.

Also commas to separate the author names, if that's how it appears in the article.

Kill Jason To---I mean, Save CoH!
-
Hence why I'm annoyed by the announcement. Even with no more content, I could have played essentially forever.

Also, navigating by compass is 2-D, right? The 3-D nature of the arrow has helped me any number of the times when dealing with tricky geometry (first mission doors, then later glowies).

Quote:This is what I'd assume. If they're talking about a deal at all, they're not going to say anything until all the terms and plans to move forward are settled.Add to that that if they are also in talks with anyone about the game's future, then they won't want to speak publicly.
Likewise, I'm actually happy that there hasn't been much word on refunds or transferals of points. I think if there was it would indicate that yes, they are still fully intending to shut the game down. What happens to points, paid game time, etc. would likely be details that would need to be addressed in any sale, and similarly wouldn't be divulged until completely nailed down (and even then, they might give the option of players transferring them to the new setup or applying them to other NCsoft games). -
Quote:I actually have never tried CO (nothing against it, just that with CoH, I never felt I needed to), but this point is absolutely true of some players. I play on a machine that dates to maybe 2008 (or even 2007?), and is running an ATI 3400 series card. It can't really run Ultra Mode, and is lucky if it manages its way through First Ward/Night Ward. Despite that, I think CoH looks pretty spiffy. Maybe that's bc what I have now is a huge improvement over the previous rig that was running it, which probably dated to 2001-2002.This may be why some COH players think Champions isn't as pretty. You may have more COH players who are still running on older machines who CAN'T run Champions at a setting where it really shines. But their older machines were able to render COH at levels where the graphics - if not ultra - were still looking pretty darn decent.
Regarding the art of CO, my impressions of it were that it reminded me a lot of Daniel Acuña's style, which really isn't my favorite (he's a good artist, just not for me). -
Quote:I wonder if ABC News' "Made In America" segment would be at all interested in the story.
This is actually something we can parlay. I mean, hello? $800k PROFIT PER MONTH with an 80 person staff? That sounds like a THRIVING small business to me! This is something worth investing in! If any of you actually write on small business blogs, this story would be worth starting over there--giant asian firm DUMPS profit-making business. This could get any potential investor with his salt salivating.
edit: well, why not. Submitted a news item suggestion via http://abcnews.go.com/Site/page?id=3...Diane%20Sawyer
edit x2: and of course I missed some legalese at the bottom of the page and got an e-mail back telling me to send a physical letter. Grr. -
I'd be worried that we'd be easily mocked by Colbert/TDS as anything.

The UI isn't perfect, but it's the only one I know and anything else would feel foreign at this point.
And I can arrange it/shrink it enough to be able to play on a 10.1" screen when I need to. It's not the ideal setup, but it's doable. -
Without question.

Well...it will be interesting to see how many ex-Paragoners wind up at ArenaNet then.

Fantastic work, guys/gals. Fantastic work.

Considering I already start from scratch with each new alt...
A large part of my disappointment is that there is still so much it his game that I haven't done (I still haven't rolled my dark controller!). It is much more about missing that than losing what I've already done.
