Quote:Nope. She was wondering how the character slots work. I know VIP gives you 12 extra slots for character creation, but we only got 6 global unlock slots when we started playing again. She wanted to know if you make a VIP AT, like MM or Controller, or make a character with a special power set, like beam rifle or something, then once you're month was up and you go back to Premium, do you still have access to that character?
You can buy an unlock in the store (which is account wide; buy the mastermind unlock lets you play as many masterminds as you like). But until you have an unlock or a Tier high enough to unlock it, you can't play it.
Note that AT unlocks or power set unlocks (like Demon Summoning) are more expensive and not the same thing as buying a slot. -
Quote:This part I think we are pretty unclear on. I'd like the devs (Zwill?) to clarify. I think you will not be able to reassign slots. In other wards, the slots you unlocked when you were premium before, will be the same slots you will have unlocked after you return to premium, with no chance to reassign. All Global slots are reset, and able to be placed again (to my understanding)
I could be totally wrong, but no one's tried it, and I think it's best to plan on the more pessimistic scenario. That way you won't be unpleasantly surprised.
Quote:Any character with a restricted Powerset or Archetype (Time Manipulation, EATs) will be locked unless it has been unlocked for you as a premium account (Either from the Paragon Rewards such as the MM or Controller ATs, or bought from the market like the EATs). One example you gave - Beam Rifle - would not be locked as it is a Purchasable set only, even VIPs have to purchase it, and as such is unlocked for both VIP and Premium play.
For Peacebringer, being only Teir 2, you'll need to spring for the Peacebringer AT ($12, 1000 points in the store). You'll also need a slot to put them in, so figure at least a few more bucks to buy a slot (I think the minimum you can buy is two). I'm pretty sure you will be able to assign any *new* slots you have bought.
Peacebringers are their own special power set, so you don't have to worry about that one in this case. -
You mean maybe if you were wearing a white opaque dome on your head?
-
This would work for me too, personally, but I assume it would require code changes on the back end/server, and therefore take more time than UI changes.
But a hard reset would actually be easier on the player, as I don't have to log a character in to see exactly when they're eligible, I just know all the characters I haven't completed the arc with in a given week automatically are. -
Yes, please read this. OP, deleteing characters gives you nothing. You don't get to rechoose the slot. You just have an empty slot.
Quote:Slots, yes, characters no.
Here is an snippet of a reply I got:
The slots are the key, not the characters.
Agree it's slots, not characters. Deleting a character won't give the OP anything back. I'm not sure that your quote is relevant, since it applies to the first time a player goes premium, not the second. I think I'd still prefer to get official clarification before saying one way or the other. -

Quote:I have to assume that within the same server the answer is "yes". If you unlocked the slot on Freedom, assign it to a character, go VIP for a month, you can then assign the slot to another character on Freedom when you go Premium again.
I'd assume it's no. The database stores those values (which slots are unlocked) in permanent storage so f2p can access them. I'd bet those values are not erased just because you went vip. VIP unlocks and Premium unlocks are two different things. See my "worst case" answer above. -
Quote:Here I'm pretty sure that if you added 10 slots to Virtue as a VIP, you get to pick which 10 additional slots are unlocked on Virtue as a Premium. My original question was intended as follows. If, while I am VIP, I unlock 10 slots on Virtue, for example, when I then revert to Premium, will all slots be locked,
Quote:so that I will need to unlock only the 7 global I am allowed as a Premium player, or, will all 10 be unlocked since I unlocked them while VIP? The wording in the "Side-by-Side Comparison" chart seems a little ambiguous.
We're almost sure you can't move those 7 slots (or the 10 you bought) to another server. I don't think this is what you're asking, just covering our answer-bases. -
Think he means: he went from Premium, to VIP, and now back to Premium. Will the exact same slots he unlocked as a premium the first time still be the unlocked slots for the second period as a premium, or will he get to pick new slots to unlock?
Personally, I don't know. Good question for someone who has done it, or for Zwill to answer. -
Here's a public transit pdf map, which shows Palo Alto, Caltrain, VTA and San Jose airport. Should be helpful to you out of towners.
http://www.vta.org/schedules/pdf/system_map.pdf -
Quote:VTA looks like it provides a free shuttle to and from the airport. According to this blurb, it goes right to the Santa Clara Caltrain Station.1) You can take the train from San Jose to Palo Alto. However, the airport isn't close to the train station so most likely you will have to take a taxi or maybe a shuttle to get to the train station. You'll find schedule, info and other useful things here.
Quote:What other free services does VTA provide?
Free ride to Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport.
The VTA/SJC Airport Flyer goes to both terminals of Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport every day from 4:30 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. On weekdays, the Airport Flyer offers service every 30 to 60 minutes from 4:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m., every 15 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and every 30 minutes from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. On weekends, the Airport Flyer offers service every 30 to 60 minutes from 4:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., every 15 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and every 30 minutes from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Get on board at the Metro/Airport Light Rail Station or the Santa Clara Caltrain Station. Click here for more Airport Flyer info.
There's light rail available too. I've taken the VTA light rail from downtown San Jose to Mountain View, which is one stop away from Palo Alto. (At Mountain View, VTA and Cal Train share the same station.) However, that would involve switching trains, and an extra fare, so the free trip to Santa Clara Caltrain sounds good to me. -
This is actually a good idea too. It's one reason why I think that new players should be handed a "menu" of options which are already worked out, because there's really a ton of work in deciding how to spend your money.
I'll point out at then end of your three months you'll only have 2 server slots to go around. You'll likely have to spend your points for slots (which I think you can only afford 3). However, in addition to the points you'll also have 3 server transfers, so that might help you consolidate on one server, if you wish to.
Both your and my suggestions permanently unlock all chat channels. $45 - $50 spent will do that. -
This stuff is getting complicated.
I was going to suggest that new options be added for Null the Gull, but what would be better is if each of the contacts had a line/button/option in their starting text to tell you want your current status is.
So talk to Theoden, he should have an extra option to tell you:
- You are/are not eligible for the bonus "first time" merit on this character.
- You /are eligible for an Alignment Merit reward/will be eligible on Month Date at HH:MM.
Since NPCs are apparently easier to program than UI elements, hopefully this could be add at minimal cost. -
Wow, OK, that, I didn't know. Buying $50 in one go looks like the better option to me now.
(There's just all sorts of new stuff to learn with the new market. Seriously, I think a bit more education slash advertising is required here.) -
Is that due to the current sale, Aggelakis? I thought all purchases would yield the same amount of bonus.
-
Yes, I was looking for things that are more "needed," as in everybody needs to have, rather than options.
Another thought, by at least level 30 or 35, buy the Alignment System ($15). Primarily to get Tips and Alignment Merits, which are really handy once you start to IO a character. Consider buying this earlier, as you can make a ton of cash selling good recipes on the market, or you can just slowly accumulate Alignment Merits to have when you are ready for them. -
Here's the gist of a conversation that happened over Champion's help channel today. Given that a free player wants the best bang for their buck, and that they are free and not returning (i.e., no high level characters), what should the buy from the market?
Assume they want to stay Premium for now (let's say they have no 50's so Incarnate content doesn't appeal to them), and other content like First Ward isn't pressing because all the legacy content is still novel and interesting to them.
Here's a rough outline I came up with.
- Play for free up to about level 20 to see if you like the game.
- If you do decide to stay, spend $40 bucks in store. This'll get you some channel unlocks. Buy:
- 5 character slots on your favorite server. You should have 7 slots available on that one server now, which is over half the regular total. Pretty good for free.
- Assuming you made it to level 20, buy the Auction House and Invention System unlocks. You'll need salvage for money, and a place to sell them. This let's you play the game for $4 per month, less than half the VIP total, for 5 months.
- 5 character slots on your favorite server. You should have 7 slots available on that one server now, which is over half the regular total. Pretty good for free.
- After 5 months buy $20 worth of more points for continuing to play $4 for month for those two licenses.
This way you can play for 10 months for about the same cost as a brand new game, while having access to the most important systems that a new, low level player will need to make progress with his characters, plus 7 characters on one server to play with.
(Personally I think the rewards and market are baroque enough that some "education" (read: advertising) about how to get started in CoH as a premium player would be helpful. As an aside, there was also some commentary in the help channel at the same time as the Premium discussion about how WoW "sucks ballz" and City of Heroes is much better. And this is from the new players. Give yourself a pat on the back, devs!)
So what would you advise a new player to get, as the most beneficial purchases for premium play? - Play for free up to about level 20 to see if you like the game.

Quote:So you wait until you have tier 4 Alpha slotted out before doing the Incarnate Trials or "working on" the other slots? I'm curious about the reasoning behind this strategy.?
I'm kind of dubious of this strategy myself. Better:
1. Unlock Alpha Slot with Mender Ramiel's arc.
2. Just do content normally. Collect shards on regular missions and iXP on trials.
3. Make Alpha components with shards and make the other Incarnate powers with drops from the trials, as you get enough components.
4. Continue until you feel you are adequately slotted up with Incarnate abilities.
I *think* Nercotech Master is saying that you shouldn't use Trial drops to make Alpha slot powers. But the way he is saying it is odd. Doing Trials without Alpha slotted is no big deal (unless it's Tin Mage or Apex). You'll have enough Barriers on you that it won't matter. And if you do die, then Vengeance is good too.
And I also have spent next to nothing on my Incarnate powers. I spent a couple of million converting a few threads just to see how it worked, but after that it seemed that it was easier just to earn iXP and get drops. Your millage may vary. -
We need badger melee.
And throwing badgers. -

What's the required number of players for the Halloween Trial? Because I tried to get in solo, and no-go. Is it 2-4? 4 exactly?
Thanks! -
Quote:Is there any advice, short of "Don't join teams of 50s", that would help make adventuring with them more survivable?Quote:But most important: Have fun. Don't worry about not pulling all of your weight. It won't be noticed.
Run into the middle of a spawn and /em dance.
There's no reason not to hang back a bit and soak XP. At +2 or more, mobs are +3 or more to your level. It can be hard on any toon to deal with a max spawn of +3 or more.
This too. -
Being untargetable and stuck is a reoccurring problem that I'd like to see fixed, or at least reduced in frequency.
