The graphics and plot is better, but gameplay-wise there's no real reason to force this requirement on new players.

Praetoria content is quite a bit harder than level 1-20 content in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles. It would actually make more sense to have players 'unlock' Praetoria by getting to level 20 as a Hero or Villain first. It seems like an 'advanced' newbie area, for people with experience in the game already.

There are some difficult mechanics at play in many Praetoria missions - packs of more than a half-dozen +1 minions, sometimes with a +2 lieutenant mixed in. Waves of enemies rushing in without a moment's pause, overwhelming the player. Missions that barely give players a chance to rest or go AFK for a bit, spawning minions that continually sneak up behind the player to bug him until he completes the mission.

I understand that new players only need to complete the brief tutorial to gain access to heroes and villains, but odds are they're going to remain in Praetoria for their newbie experience. They don't know the other newbie experiences are easier yet - they'll have to ask around to figure out that they'll have an easier time elsewhere. Is that really the newbie experience Paragon wants for new players?

Some people like the challenge of Praetoria. That's fine with me. But if the content is designed to be challenging, why strongly nudge newbies into starting their CoX experience with it? Either make it clear that Praetoria is for advanced players, or tone down the difficulty somehow. Put in a notoriety-changing NPC. It feels like an oversight that they don't exist in Praetoria - as though the developers have already made the choice for us, and told the NPC we want to fight enemies +2 to our level and that we're as good as 3 standard heroes.

Some of you are so pro that this doesn't bother you. Sincere congrats, I look up to people so skilled. But not all of us are that good, especially those of us who are just starting or coming back after a very long departure.

To us, Praetoria is just frustrating. I've already used the 3-day cooldown on mission-skipping twice, not because of bugs but because of extreme difficulty. I feel like I'm playing CoH on some sort of 'hard mode'. It reminds me of how it feels when you try to solo a group quest in other MMORPGs, except Praetoria is supposed to be completely soloable. Something just doesn't add up.

I'll continue banging my head against brick walls, but hopefully soon there's some sort of relief. Right now, my experience with Praetoria is akin to a tourist buying a travel package to a beach resort and being taken to a military boot camp instead.
I've also noticed that things are considerably more difficult in praetoria. I've been on more team wipes in the last few days that I usually see in a month. Personally, I enjoy the challenge, but I can see how some people would get frustrated.

If there are no notoriety contacts in Praetoria (I've never had cause to look for any), then that seems like a major oversight, and they should be added ASAP.

I say make it at least 2-3 times larger than it is - enough so that it will always be able to store much more salvage than you can carry on yourself.

In addition to that, there should be a recipe storage bank as well, for holding on to rare recipes that you plan on making later, without having to use up a market slot or risk accidentally selling them by carrying them around with you.
I don't have a problem with this idea per se, it's just that salvage is not expensive/rare enough to be worthwhile to take the time to store, so I don't really care.

This is a fantastic idea. If I want to leave my toggles on while I shop, I should have that choice. If you don't want to be bothered by my toggles, you should have that option too.

Although honestly I wouldn't really care if all the markets were power suppression zones if they met the following two conditions.

    1. The game warns you that your powers have been toggled off (so you realize it and turn them back on when you leave.

    2. They leave travel powers alone.

I've always liked stone cages to combo with stalagmites though, since it's basically an AoE hold by level 12. I'll give it some thought though.

Maybe... if sli/crossfire got fully implemented and you had two high end cards, it could happen.

UM was made for the next generation of graphics card. It went beyond what the current generation could do.

I have a better configuration than you can I can't put everything up.

So, my recommendation is: Shut off occlusion. Too little gain for so much fps cost.

Turn up FSAA one more notch and if there isn't a big fps hit, leave it there.

And you'll be good to go.
Well, that's a bit disappointing, but thanks for the info.
  7. I just did a major overhaul of my gaming rig. I went for pretty high performance, and assumed it would be able to run ultra mode at max settings with no problem.

I checked it out this morning, and was disappointed when I found out I couldn't.

With the graphics settings shown below in the COH Helper report, I get about 30 FPS. If I max out absolutely everything, it drops down to about 20. Ambient occlusion seems to affect the framerate the most. If I turn it off completely, I go up to around 45-50 FPS. Full Screen Anti-Aliasing seems to drop it quite a bit if set beyond 4x as well.

Any suggestions on what could improve performance, or is it really that hard to run CoH on max settings?

    Bugs in GR

My issue is different. I actually can see the little menu that shows what programs are running, and holding down alt and pressing tab does switch between them on the menu. However, they simply don't come to the front like they should when I release alt+tab. Even hitting the 'show desktop' button in the quickbar doesn't work.

    Bugs in GR

Since GR came out today, I noticed two extremely annoying bugs.

    1. Whenever I zone, my keybinds reset to default.

    2. While playing CoH, I cannot alt+tab to switch to another window.

Has anyone else run into these and/or know how to fix them? They're both really getting on my nerves and seriously cutting into my enjoyment of GR.
  10. I've liked the concept of dominators for a long time. I enjoy both controllers and blasters, so combining the two into a single AT looks like a great idea. I can't stand playing redside though, so I've never gotten one past level 10 or so. With GR about to come out, that's going to change. I've decided my first GR character is going to be an Earth/Fire/Fire dom that I'll bring blueside. I've also got a lot of money burning a hole in my pocket, so it's going to be a permadom.

After looking over the powersets, I decided that I'm focusing pretty much solely on playing from range, since earth control works great at a distance, and Fiery assault/fire mastery seems to fit that playstyle perfectly. Below is a rough-cut at a permadom build. It's permadom by a pretty wide margin, and perma-hasten as well. Please pick it apart and let me know how it can be improved.

A note: This is intended to be the build that I level with (power/enhancement order) as well as my level 50 build. If it can be improved by using two different builds and respeccing at some point, that's not an issue.

What's the difference between these missions? Is one of them better for farming?

Are there any non-AE missions which are better for a Fire/Kin than this?

You definitely don't want 'defeat battle maiden and her minions'. That one's in a cave map.

The other two are both on the same outdoor map, and are pretty much identical as far a farming goes. One has a bunch of glowies, and one has an AV, so neither is easy to accidentally end. There's not much better than those two maps to farm with a fire/kin.
  12. I just plan on staying away from the markets for awhile after GR comes out to let things settle down a bit before getting back in and seeing what the new landscape looks like. I'm just too lazy to try and put a ton of effort in trying to determine what I can make a bunch of money on as soon as GR comes out.
  13. I do lots of random crap while waiting for things to happen in-game.

I'll turn on ninja run and see how quickly I can do backflips in place.

I'll turn on superspeed and run tiny circles around my teammates until they get annoyed and tell me to quit.

I'll find the weakest enemies I can and use whatever knockback powers I have access to to see how far I can throw them.

I'll fly up to the zone ceiling and then fall all the way back to earth. Sometimes I'll try to teleport, jump with the jump pack, or turn fly back on just before I hit the ground to avoid damage. Other times I'll smack into the ground and see how much health I can lose.

Sometimes I'll tp up to the top of buildings then use recall friend to drop my teammates off the edge.

Sometimes I'll turn on superspeed and have fun with the bug that let's you run through chainlink fences.

Sometimes I'll just wander around and see if I can find anything interesting in the game that I've never seen before.

This is true, but I was just going for a quick overview. For the most part when people talk about farming, it's running a single mission over and over again for purple drops. There are of course other ways to do it, and a few missions that are considered 'good' farm missions that you can rotate between.
  15. My fire/sr scrapper. To this day, he's still the only character that I've purpled. He's an absolute wrecking ball, with more staying power than most tanks. He is my default 'go-to' character when something new comes out and I want to give it a try.
  16. The auction system in CoH works as follows.

When you bid on an item, and there are multiple items of that type for sale, you will buy the one with the lowest list price, IF your offer is higher than the list price.

For example, if you place a bid of 1000 influence for a hydraulic piston, and there are 3 hydraulic pistons for sale, listed at prices of 100 influence, 400 influence, and 1000 influence, you will buy the one listed for 100 influence. If on the other hand, the pistons were listed at 2000, 3000, and 4000 influence, you wouldn't buy one at all.

When you are selling an item, and there are already bids out for it, you will sell to the highest bidder, IF your list price is lower than the bid price.

For example, if you list a hydraulic piston at 100 influence, and there are bids standing for 100 influence, 200 influence, and 400 influence, you will sell it for 400 influence, to whoever bid that amount. If, on the other hand, the bids were 10, 20, and 30 influence, you wouldn't sell it at all.

When there are multiple bids/offers for the same item at the same price, which one is bought/sold depends on which one was put on the market first.

When you list an item, it costs you 5% of the list price up front to list it. If you later cancel the listing for some reason, you DO NOT get this money back, so don't list things too high.

When you sell an item, you pay an additional amount of money to bring your total selling fee up to 10% of the sale price (so 10% of the sale price minus the 5% of the list price you already paid).

Bidding on an item does not cost anything.

As far as making money in CoH goes, there are a couple ways to go about it.

    1. Farming. This is essentially running the same content over and over to quickly gather rewards and then selling them for inf. People farm recipe drops, architect tickets, and merits. Farming is a fairly complex topic that deserves another discussion altogether. If it's something you're interested in, PM me and I can give you some tips.

    2. The Markets. This is essentially making money the same way you do in a real-life stock market, by buying low and selling high. In reality, it breaks down into two strategies.

Flipping: Flipping is when you buy an item for a low price, then resell it at a higher price to make a profit (counting the fact that you lose 10% of the sale price as a market fee).

Crafting/Selling: This is (in my opinion) the easiest way to make money from the markets. Crafted invention origin enhancements often sell for a good bit more inf than the recipes and salvage that they are crafted from do. A shrewd businessman can make good money by buying recipes, crafting them into enhancements, and selling the enhancements at an inflated value. This can be done with common invention origin recipes/enhancements, but it is usually more lucrative to do it with set recipes/enhancements. The latter generally requires a somewhat larger initial investment though.

I don't want to burst your bubble or anything, but I feel you have an unrealistic idea of the scale of City of Heroes' economy. 20 million influence is not much at all. In fact, you can expect most high-end builds to cost at least 100 times that (i.e. upwards of 2 billion inf).

I take it there is a good reason to go 16GB other than because you can. Those 4GB sticks are going for a 60% premium per GB over the 2GB stick quad kit with the same speed, timings and voltage. Even the 2 x 4GB stick kit with the same timings is less than half the price of the 4 x 4GB kit.

I know that price wise it's logical to pick the HD 5830 for the Crossfire configuration but there is a huge problem with the HD 5830s. When ATI was disabling portions of the GPU to make the 5830 (it's the same GPU that's in the 5850 and 5870) one of the things they did was to eliminate half of the render back ends (which handles things like Z buffering) making it the same as the HD 5770. This means that if you simply double the theoretical peak pixel output of the HD 5830, it is still less than the output of a HD 5870. Theoretical peak texture and shader output is 30% higher but I don't how much that lack of render back ends will hurt.

Also since the HD 5830 is the same GPU, it uses about the same amount of power as the HD 5870 and now you are putting two into the system. Nearly twice the power requirements and maybe 25% better performance some of the times. And remember, power equals heat.

I'm sure you realize that the Phenom II X4 965 isn't as powerful as the i7-860 (or 870). They should perform equally well for gaming but if you are using software than can take advantage of multiple cores such as video compression or 3D rendering, the Intel is the better choice.

IMO I would go with 2x4GB kit and put the money saved into your video card budget and get a pair of HD 5850s, if you are seriously about Crossfire. You'll still be saving around $100.

Let me think about the motherboards a bit.
Thanks for the advice. Every other time I've bought/built a computer I've been advised to get as much RAM as i could afford. Guess thats not the case so much anymore?

Also, can you explain a little more why the Intel processor will perform better than the amd? They're both quad cores, and the amd has a faster clock speed, so what's making the difference?
  19. After finding out that my faithful old behemoth of a computer, which rode the bleeding edge just 3.5 years ago can't play CoH on the top graphics settings anymore, I decided it's time for a new computer. I plan on keeping some components from my old system (DVD burner, Case, Hard Drives, possibly the power supply and CPU cooler, and all peripherals) and replacing everything else for a major increase in performance. I'm considering a few different options right now. Components and Specs for each system are posted below.

    Single Video Card Intel System
    Motherboard
    CPU
    RAM
    Video Card

    Crossfire Intel System
    Motherboard
    CPU
    RAM
    Video Card (2x in crossfire)

    Single Video Card AMD System
    Motherboard
    CPU
    RAM
    Video Card

    Crossfire AMD System
    Motherboard
    CPU
    Ram
    Video Card (2x in crossfire)

This will only be the second system I've built, and the last one was more than 3 years ago, so I've got some questions.

The AMD processor seems like a FAR better choice than the intel, with considerably better performance at a considerably cheaper cost. It almost seems too good to be true. So is there some downside to the AMD, or is it simply a better choice?

I can get 16 GB of DDR3 1333 RAM for $480 vs. 16 GB of DDR3 1600 for $640. Is there enough extra performance in the DDR3 1600 to justify that extra $160 or would I be wasting my money?

Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of if I decide to go with a crossfire system rather than a single video card? Any benefits/drawbacks to either setup?

Will the systems I outlined above actually work? Mostly I'm concerned whether or not I've picked a motherboard that will support everything else.

I'm currently using a PC Power and Cooling silencer 610W power supply. Will that be sufficient to run the systems outlined above, or should I be looking at upgrading that as well?

I currently use a Zalman CNPS9700 CPU cooler, will that work with the CPUs listed above, or does that need to be upgraded.

Last, but certainly not least, is this going to be capable of running CoH at max settings?

Any other advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated as well.

    Thanks.
  20. Two things mainly.

Timid teams. It's one thing to stop and size up a tough-looking group for a couple seconds, especially if the team is running on a high difficulty setting. It drives me nuts when everyone pauses for 10 or 15 seconds before every group we fight, despite the fact that we're steamrolling everything.

Running out of endurance. There's nothing in this game less fun than standing around doing nothing because you don't have enough endurance to fire off any powers (except brawl, which is about as effective as bleeding on your enemies)
  21. There are a few builds that can challenge, or even beat a fire/kin in farming speed, most of them have already been mentioned. The real benefit of a fire/kin is that they're extremely cheap and easy to farm with. A lot of the other builds mentioned are either more difficult to play, require a lot more IO'ing to be effective, or both.

One, Pun-Pun, was a way to take a 5th levelish (IIRC) character and give them infinite stats, infinite saving throws, infinite armor class, etc. as well as access to all powers in the game. Sort of a thought exercise, I doubt it ever saw play. . .
Pun Pun can actually be done as early as level 1.
  23. My wife and I play together, and there's been a couple times where we were sending dirty tells to each other and one slipped out into the team chat or broadcast or something. That's always good for some awkwardness.

There's also been times when we were talking badly about someone else on the team (i.e. This is the worst tank I've ever seen, or something like that) and we've accidentally said something that the rest of team could see.
  24. I plan my builds out ahead of time, but I create almost all the builds myself in mids. I've only ever copied two builds directly from a post on the forums, and both of those were high-end builds with very specific intent (a softcapped perma-hasten fire/sr scrapper and a perma-PA ill/rad controller). Even then, the build I copied was essentially someone improving on a build I had already posted. I tend to follow the builds I create fairly closely after I create the character, but if I realize that something isn't working or isn't going to work, I change them as I go along.

Mainly the reason I do this is because I like to IO nearly all my builds starting when my character is in their 30s. I create a build for them so that I can start buying and crafting the IOs they'll eventually need as soon as I start the character, so that by the time I want to slot them, I don't have to wait to buy a bunch of stuff.
  25. I'd love to see:

    1. A device/gadget control set (since controllers have no 'natural' sets at the moment)
    2. More blaster secondaries. Especially something like a martial arts or body manipulation set. A sonic set and a radiation set would be good too.

Actually, those are the only 2 really 'new' sets I can think of. There's tons of proliferation that I want done though.
