  2. This past weekend I was running my lvl 50 dm/wp brute with a lvl 50 demon/? mm. I was helping him with his patron missions (ghost widow). My brute is modestly IO'd out, his MM had outdated enhancements.

    Everything was going fine until we got to the defeat Ghost Widow mission. My brute was able to tank her fairly well, but we couldn't get enough dps to get past her regen. We enlisted the aid of my wife, on her lvl 50 ss/wp brute, and were still unsuccessful.

    So I decided to try our lvl 50 thugs/dark mm's. She only has 4 50's, I only have 3, so we didn't have a lot of options, but I thought it would be interesting to try and see what the differences were between the AT's.

    Our MM's cleaned GW's clock in about 30 seconds. I was and remain amazed at the result. Perhaps there are other brute builds that could handle other scenarios better than our MM's, but in this one case at least, not only did our MM's do something that our brutes were completely unable to do, they did it with a quickness and ease that just boggled my mind.

    Now I know that thugs is somewhat of a special case with the stacked enforcer leadership toggles, and our builds are certainly designed to play to that advantage, but I would still guess there was far less infamy spent on our MM builds than there was on our brutes.

    So, my question is this: Is this particular situation an outlier based on the specific attributes of Ghost Widow vs. the AT power sets involved, or would this apply pretty much across the board, in terms of the MM's seeming more powerful than brutes in basic PvE content?

    ps I am normally a bigger fan of brutes than MMs, but this scenario has me reconsidering my position.
  3. Thanks for the quick responses. Too bad about the infamy, but not a huge deal, really. She's kind of an odd player. She has two lvl 50 SS brutes but she rarely uses rage. She claims she just doesn't think about it.

    She also prefers AS and fly to CJ and SJ, because fly is easier for her to deal with.

    It might be that this set doesn't suit her too well. What would be an easier secondary for her to play? I guess /WP is pretty easy, and survivable. One of her 50 brutes is a /wp and I don't really know if she would want to do that again or not. I suppose /SR and /INV are pretty good and simple as well. Do any of those three go better with FM?
  4. My wife and I normally play villain-side. We each have several lvl 50 villains. We know how things work over there. We've tried hero-side just a few times. The size of the zones, contacts in multiple zones, missions from the same contact in multiple zones, and all these things have kept us red side.

    It seems things have changed a little with I17 and ninja run. Missions are not so far away anymore, and ninja run lets us get there quicker, so it's not as bad as it used to be. Therefore, we are giving hero-side another try.

    I chose an ill/rad troller, and she chose a FM/Regen scrapper. I have plenty of experience with brutes, and so does she, we each have 2 lvl 50 brutes, but we've never tried FM and of course brutes don't have regen.

    I'm using the Local Guide to Ill/Rad Controllers by Local Man (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=141225) to figure out my toon, but I didn't see any guides on FM/Regen.

    I've started on a leveling build for her, can you let me know if I'm on the right track? We will be using Ninja Run for early traveling, so there is no need for us to have our travel power at 14, I figured she was better off with attacks and stamina by 20, although quick recovery may mean she doesn't stamina by 20 either, freeing her up to take something else. What else, I don't know.

    We have no infamy on the server we chose, Virtue, but I guess we can email it from our other toons. I don't remember though if villains on one server can email infamy to heroes on another server. If not, we will have no infamy other than what we earn ourselves.

  5. Thanks for the responses. I was able to hang with her (Ms. Liberty) for about 10-15 minutes, I wasn't really counting. My end held up pretty well. I used Dark Consumption almost every time it was up.

    Towards the end, I just couldn't keep up with the regen. This coincided with the defeat of the last longbow mob from the multiple soul drains and dark consumptions.

    I think in addition to upping regen through numina/regen tissue, I really need to up my dps but I'm not sure how to do that.

    Something I've been thinking about is /Inv and /ela. The /ela would obviously mitigate the end issues, and has roughly equivalent res, but wouldn't have the regen or defense of /wp. /Inv would have better res, equivalent def, but lack of end recovery options.

    I've thought about using SM with /ela to help mitigate incoming damage through KD. SM also has some nice burst damage with SM, HM, and SS. If enough recharge could be had, I might be able to get an attack chain of SM, HM, SS, SM, HM, Tremor, repeat. Tons of knockdown with the occasional hold. Using purples would also fill the toxic hole in /ELA.

    SS/INV is another way I'm thinking about, if I can mitigate the endurance somehow. Is there a SS/INV build that could fight an AV for 10-15 minutes without losing endurance?
  6. So I just tried to solo a Hero with my main, Magnus Black, a DM/WP brute. It was in the Mender Silos Strike Force, on 0/1 diff. She spawned as a lvl 50 hero. I was able to take her down to maybe 20%, using Demonic once, Force of Nature once, a few inspirations.

    I know some people in this forum are able to solo Heroes, what I don't know is if the problem is my build, my powersets, or my inexperience. I have done plenty of Strike Forces with him, and I have all the Accolades, but in this area I'm just not getting it done.

    Also, I don't want to gimp the build so soloing Heroes is the only thing it can do. I also like doing SF's and normal missions.

    On a somewhat related note, Magnus is my only 50 brute. I'm missing AoE attacks because in addition to soloing heroes, I would also like to wade into huge mobs and slaughter them by the score.

    So here's my question: is there a powerset combo that will allow me to

    1) Solo Heroes
    2) Destroy mass levels of mobs
    3) Survive while doing both of those
    4) Allow for good contribution to team during SF (not necessarily tank)
    5) Do well in general purpose mission play

    In my quest to be able to do all that, I have started a deleted many brutes. I currently have a lvl 32 Claws/ELA, lvl 12 WM/SD, and lvl 2 Claws/SR, SM/ELA, SS/FA, and SS/INV.

    Would any of those be better at what I want than the DM/WP? Is there another combo I'm missing that would do what I want better? Or do I just need to improve Magnus' build?

    Here is the build for Magnus. The levels of the enhancements are not all 50's, that's just easier for me to put into Mid's, but the sets are all correct.

  8. I have used your input to come up with a first build attempt.

    It is soft capped solo, at 47.1/47.1/46.7. I take Phalanx Fighting and Grant Cover early because I expect I might be duoing with my wife's BA/SD brute, Arc de Joan. I wanted to be soft capped solo, though, because I don't always play with her.

    Is this build gimped at all? I don't think it will be TOO expensive. Hopefully within my 700 mil budget, not counting what he actually makes as I level him.

    Appreciate any constructive criticism. Obviously, I plan on using Ninja Run as long as possible. I might need to move Super Jump up, though, if it gets too bad without it.

  9. Thanks for the responses.

    I leveled a new BA/SD brute up to almost lvl 7 last night, a virtual clone of the WM/SD I had played the prior night. Man, they are both a lot of fun, but I think I like the Mace a little more than the Axe, it just seems smashier. I'm not sure if it's the sound effects or using a slicing weapon vs. bludgeoning, but I just like the feel of mace better I think.

    I'm going to get them both up to 10 I think, and play them one after another, instead of letting a few nights pass, but I think WM is going to win out.

    Assuming I'm going to be using WM, I'm looking at Mid's trying to figure out a build. So far at lvl 7 I have Bash, Deflection, Pulverize, Jawbreaker, and True Grit. I can see getting Clobber at 8 and Active Defense at 10. AAO and Whirling Mace seem like no-brainers at 16 and 18. That leaves me 12 and 14 for swift, hurdle, and/or health, so I can take stamina at 20.

    Is it viable to leave off Battle Agility until 22? Are swift and hurdle decent choices over health if I'm using Ninja Run as my travel power? Do I need to get into the fighting pool earlier?

    Also, I don't understand Phalanx Fighting. Mids shows defense values of 2.25 and 3.75. When I select it and leave 0 allies, it says 0, add 1 I get 2.25, then it adds 2.25 for additional allies. What is the 3.75 about? It is really 0 with no allies?

    Once I get high enough level that I'm going to respec, which attack power should I drop? Seven attack powers, plus kick, seems a little much. And I assume I should use kick rather than boxing because it's SD, right?

    It seems like I have a lot of questions, especially for playing brutes for so long, but I'm just not used to the weapon sets or shield defense. Thanks if you can give me some more help.
  10. I recently made another brute, WM/SD this time. I've been reading about the smashiness of WM. I've had a 50 EM/ELA, 50 DM/WP, 35 SS/INV, 25 Claws/ELA, a lowbie SM/?, ELM/SD, and something else, probably.

    I have to say, none of them seemed quite as smashy as this WM/SD brute. Also, I put him in armor with a kite shield and he just looks great smashing stuff with shield and mace. He's only lvl 7, but he's been a lot of fun already.

    My question is about the difference between WM and BA. Looking them over, power by power in Mids, they seem almost equivalent. Slightly faster cast time here, slower recharge there, whatever. With one exception. Every single BA attack power does .67 KB, except Swoop, which does 7.79 knockup.

    It seems like that would be better mitigation than WM with some .67 KB, and some chance for stun. Also, I got a little frustrated with my EM/ELA brute because of the mobs walking away from me after I stunned them.

    Is that the main difference between them, stun/kb vs. straight kb?

    Secondly, I am interested in soft capping the brute, but I've heard it's quite expensive for SD. I am not rich in infamy, I have about 700 Mil on my main, and probably less than 200 Mil on all my other toons combined. I'm sure that would soft cap SR, but I really like the shield aspect of SD, it just looks good with my toon, and does offer the other offensive capabilities.

    Is there a way to soft cap a BA or WM/SD with that amount of infamy? Is it really necessary or just a nice-to-have? I have my DM/WP somewhat I/O'd out, maybe 500 Mil into him, but nothing extra special. I don't have any purples on him.

    But I'm having a lot of fun with this toon. Either he or a BA/SD might very well become my next main, and I would like to optimize as much as I can afford. I do have ninja run, and I'm enjoying that, so travel powers can wait or potentially be skipped altogether.

  11. I'm working on my first SoA with my wife's first SoA. I went soldier, she went widow. I'm trying to see where we're going down the road. She will be choosing Night Widow path, so it makes sense to me to go with the Bane, so that we can both stealth when need be.

    My problem is there are soooo many options, I can't take everything I want.

    From training and gadgets, I know I want everything except Wolf Spider Armor, CT:O, and call Reinforcements.

    From Bane Spider Training I want everythin except Web Cocoon.

    From Arachnos Soldier I want Venom Granade at the very least. WAWG and Frag Grenade look good too, but maybe they're not.

    From Bane Spider Soldier I like Bash, Pulverize, Shatter, Placate, and Crowd Control, maybe build up too.

    I like CJ and SJ for travel, I'm pretty sure I'll need stamina, and I'd like the leadership pool as well.

    And then I have to take 2 out of Single Shot, Pummel, Burst, Bash, Mace Beam, and Mace Beam Blast.

    That's more powers than I can take. I will only be playing PvE content. Normal missions while leveling up. Would like to do SF's once we're 50. I will almost always be playing with at least my wife's NW. We will generally be trying to get a larger team going, so it seems to make sense to grab as many leadership toggles as we can.

    So here are some questions I have. Does it make sense for both of us to take both Assault powers? I would think so. Extra 60% damage for everyone on the team sounds good.

    Do we both need to take both Tactics powers? I can see maybe not. An extra 30% to hit is nice, an extra 60% seems like quite a bit of overkill, not to mention the 5-7% from mindlink.

    Should we both take both Manuevers? I would be giving 20% defense, she would be giving 13%. Total of 33% hardly seems like overkill, even with her almost 15% from mind link. That soft caps everyone on the team, providing they stay within range and her mind link is perma.

    Which brings me to hasten, a power which I didn't even mention above. It would definitely be nice to have venom grenade and surveillance up more often, as well as pulverize, shatter, and crowd control.

    Can you give me some ideas about what my priorities and strategies should be? What am I overlooking, overrating, and underrating? I probably coud use some help with my wife's NW build as well, but I'm ok with focusing on the bane build here.

  13. I have a level 41 Thugs/Dark that I duo with my wife, who also plays a Thugs/Dark. Things go pretty well solo, and even better when we duo. I'm trying to get him soft capped on S/L, Ranged, and AoE when duo'd. I'm there on S/L and AoE, but not quite on Ranged (when duo'd).

    Can you recommend something that will finish the job? I'm open to possibly changing a few powers, but it would have to be a pretty significant improvement to the build. I think the powers are pretty good, but maybe I missed something.

    If I can get any more recharge without reducing the defense, that would be great too.

    My wife's build is almost identical, but she went with Fly instead of Leaping because she doesn't like leaping.

    Elec/Sonic

    Hi all. I'm building this cor for my wife as a support character for my claws/ela brute. The thought is that my lighting field and power sink, combined with her short circuit, power sink, tesla cage and electric shackles will be enough to bring even an AV to it's knees.

    The problem is, I don't know jack about the Electric Blast set and I'm not sure about slotting or even power selection for the toon.

    I ended up taking all the powers in the primary minus Aim. I'm sure some people would have a cow over that, but I have a few reasons.

    1) My wife is not a huge fan of Aim.
    2) I need power sink and electric shackles for the sapper concept.
    3) My wife loves her Mu, so I can't get rid of him.
    4) She'll need Stamina.
    5) I need fly as a travel power because that's what she likes.

    So I have those contraints. Obviously, I'll also need the sonic shields for my brute, including sonic dispersion, and the disruption field. Liquefy seems like it could be pretty good. I'm not sold on clarity. My brute probably won't need it. The Voltaic Sentinel will help with the sapper strategy. Zapp is another one I'm on the fence with. I guess Charged Armor is a possible as well, although it seems like it would stack with sonic dispersion to give solid resistance.

    Can I get some ideas/advice on this please? I'll include my brute build as well.

    Once again, thanks for all the feedback.

    I talked to my wife about the support cor powers. She doesn't like sonic attacks because of the sound effect. I settled on Electrical blast for 2 reasons.

    1) It is thematically appropriate for Voltress Voltanus, wife of Voldo Voltanus.

    2) Short Circuit, combined with her Power Sink, my Power Sink, my lightning field, and her Tesla Cage plus Electric Shackles, should be able to lower endurance on pretty much anything. Her power sink will drain 67.1%, mine will drain 76.7%, and her short circuit will drain 67.1%, plus reduce recovery by 191.8%. My lightning field is draining 4.27% every 2 seconds, and her Tesla Cage reduces recovery by 153% and drains 10.7%. Her electric shackles reduces recovery by 126.5% and drains 8.86%.

    Can even an AV stand up to that?

    I also changed my slotting around. With Combat Jumping and -KB in Super Jump, I delayed grounded to 47. I moved up kick and tough, which pushed back eviscerate. I moved Follow Up in front of my AoE powers. This finishes my single target attack chain at 30, and gives me spin for AoE. Then I start adding my AoEs in Lightning Field, Power Sink, Eviscerate, and Shockwave. I delayed Hasten to 44. Maybe that's bad, but I know that one of my weaknesses as a player is that I tend not to use Hasten because I know it's not even close to perma. If I'm not going to be using it, I'll just hold off on it. I save weave to the end because I will be using my resistence for survival and the defense is just icing.
    I changed Lightning Field slotting to reflect my planned sapper attacks with the corrupter. I don't think I need the extra 9% acc from scirocco, so I focused on damage and endurance, plus the endurance mod.

    I'm left with 1 slot I'm not sure what to do with. I could put it back in Focus for the damage proc. Right now, with hasten running power sink is up every 17.9 seconds. If I 3 slot it instead, that would move back to 20.3 seconds, doing the same amount of endurance drain. Is that slot worth it? If I take it away, I could have 2 slots and put them in super jump for the rest of the zepher set. Or I could throw them in Combat Jumping for more LotG, or maybe a Kismet +6% acc and another slot in health for miracle +15% recovery.

    At this point, the build is probably more expensive than I can afford, but I guess there are ways to make that kind of infamy.

    I'll add the support corrupter build, although I'm even more lost on the slotting for that one.

    Thanks for the comments and advice. I really appreciate it.

    I'll start with what will best support this toon. I like the /sonic, the question is what primary to put with it. Sonic primary would add more -res to our enemies, so that would be good. However, Sonic Dispersion and Disruption Field have a high endurance cost, so I was looking at Electrical Blast which can give a little end back on many of its attacks. In addition to that, it has Short Circuit, which seems like it might be a good match with my Lightning Field and Power Sink.

    I didn't really have any good reason to slot Impervium Armor, other than going for the 2.25% Max Endurance and bringing up Psi resist. The 41.1% in your build seems sufficient so I don't have a problem replacing them.

    Sorry about the Mako quad in Kick. I just don't like having an empty slot. I doubt I would ever have a need to use the kick, so there's not much point in spending on it.

    So, I like what you have done with my build. My question now is, if you were to move powers around or change them, what would you do? I got Voldo up to 20 last night and I was really missing KB protection. I think I will swap grounded and Lightning Reflexes to get that protection a little earlier.

    It seems like I might want Follow Up a little earlier, but I'm not sure what to move back. Maybe I don't need shockwave at all, if I can run FU, Spin, and Eviscerate for AoE. Maybe I don't need Ball Lightning or Mu Lightning either. That would mean I could replace Super Speed with Combat Jumping and Super Jump and still have a power to grab. Of course, then I would lose 18.75% recharge time from the IO sets in those powers.

    If I were then to add weave, and my wife took Maneuvers, that could up my defense from 6.8% to 15% or so, to go with high resistances to everything, including 40% to both toxic and psionic, when I am paired with her Elec or Sonic/Sonic cor.

    I posted earlier with some questions on this build and I got some good advice. I've taken some time to think about it and I have a new build to be analyzed. I think I will be able to afford most of the IO's by the time I hit 50, I didn't really go for anything super-expensive, I think, which is good, because my bank account is not high.

    I think this build allows be a good single target attack chain with FU-Focus-Slash-Strike-Mu Lightning (if needed), and a good AoE attack chain with Spin-Eviscerate-Shockwave-Ball Lightning.

    Hasten down-time is 20 seconds, energize downtime is 5 seconds, power sink is up every 18 seconds.

    My questions are:

    What are the optimal single target and aoe attack chains with this build?
    Can the slotting be adjusted to be more effective at comparable (or lower) cost?
    I'm really going to miss a vertical travel power, raptor pack notwithstanding. Is there a way to grab Super Jump that won't hurt the build too bad? I wouldn't mind losing Super Speed, but don't know what else to drop.
    Are the Mu Mastery attacks worth it, or would I have it all covered in the Claws attacks? They are nice for the 12.5% recharge times I would get from the sets, don't know how I would replace that.
    Any other general advice for the build?
    My wife duos with me sometimes and plays cor's sometimes. What cor power combo would benefit this build the most? Ice shields to add some defense? Sonic shields to increase the resistance? Kin for speed boost?

    PS This is for PvE content only. I sometimes solo, sometimes duo, sometimes team. I don't do AE missions very much/at all. I like to run SF's. I like to be able to fight AV's and heroes. I do newspaper missions and contact missions. Casual player (10 hours a week at most). I have 500 mil infamy on my wealthiest toon. Not much else to speak of otherwise. Voldo is currently lvl 17.

  19. Hi all. I am starting a duo with my wife, who is playing the stalker. We each have lvl 50's, but have never played stalker/dom before. Her stalker is lvl 12 and my dom (mind/psi) is lvl 13. It seems like it will have good synergy, I'll sleep/dominate/confuse the mobs and she'll take them out 1 by 1.

    I think she might be able to hold off on placate due to the good control of the dom, but maybe not. We should be duoing mostly, with occasional solo play. Not concerned with PvP. No more than a couple hundred mil to spend on the build.

    Is hasten recommended? My wife prefers fly as a travel power. Will she need stamina? Will she get auto crits when attacking a mob I have slept/dominated/confused?

    I would appreciate any tactics or build advice you can offer.

    I haven't seen any mind/psi builds since the big dom changes, and they would be for solo anyway. For this duo I see my role as more control than damage. My rather basic understanding is I will sleep them and the stalker will kill them one at a time.

    I think this means I focus on control and she focuses on damage. I don't know if she will even need placate as early as normal.

    My best guess is I should lead with mez, then hit mass hypnosis. Dominate anyone not sleeping, let the stalker take out a few. Throw in confuse and then basically spam those attacks. I can use my psi dart and mind probe on targets that are confused and/or dominated. Stalker can simply assassin strike the slept mobs and hopefully 1-shot them.

    It seems both of the builds will want hasten.

    I don't have a lot of infamy to spend on the builds, couple hundred mil tops.

    I appreciate any build and tactics advice you can give.

  22. My wife has been enjoying playing her Ninja Blade/Ninjitsu Stalker. She is still below 10th level, but wants to start playing her more.

    I have a 50 cor and brute, and a 39 MM. My highest dom is a lvl 13 mind/psi. Is that a good build to pair with this stalker? It seems the sleeps would work well with a stalker.

    Are there any other powersets that would have a better synergy? Obviously, with lvl 13 as my highest Dom, I don't have a lot of experience with them, so I would welcome any suggestions.

  24. Thanks for all the replies. I hadn't thought about pushing Follow-up back, that seems like a good idea.

    I don't think I want to push grounded back because I can't afford the -KB IO's right now.

    I could swap CJ and SJ for hasten and SS, but I wouldn't want SS to be my only travel power because it's such a pain for me to navigate with. Of course, I'm also talking about not taking my travel power until 32, so I could probably swing SS with temp travel powers.

    Taking Lightning Field early is an interesting idea, and I could swap it out with Conductive Shield because I don't really use it too much.

    In terms of attacks, I still have downtime with auto-brawl, strike, slash, spin, Follow up, and sands of mu. Not a lot, but some.

    Still, if I replace FU with CJ, and decide to go ahead and slot the KB protection in there, I can put SJ where I have grounded. Or drop CJ and SJ alltogether and go with hasten, SS and temp travel powers for vertical.

    I really want Stamina at 20 because I am waiting on Stamina to take Lightning Field, which I really, really, want. Therefore I have to push of my travel powers and use temp powers until lvl 32. I don't really want to do that and I haven't done that before. I'm not sure I'll be able to take it, but I can't put off energize, don't want to put off lightning reflexes, and I figure I will want eviscerate ASAP as well.

    I've never played claws so I don't know what I will need. Right now I'm taking everything except swipe and taunt. Do I need Eviscerate at 26? Do I need Shockwave?

    This build doesn't use hasten. I'm not a huge fan of hasten unless it can be perma and I don't have the resouces to make it perma. ELA doesn't need it, except for mabye Energize. I don't think Claws really needs it, so it's not a big loss.

    I went with Electrifying Fences and Ball Lightning because I want to pair them with Lightning Field and Power Sink for Endurance Drain.

    I'm not concerned about PvE. I mostly solo or duo. Team sometimes, and I would like to be able to run some TFs. I don't have a lot of infamy. This brute has about 300,000 right now. My main has almost 500 Million, and I'd really rather not use all of that for this toon.

    So can I get some comments on my power selection and some slotting ideas, trying to keep it under 200 Mil or so?
