Claws/DA is fun, but so far at low lvls it is a bit trickier to play than my DM/Regen scrapper.
Both are great fun though -
Finding a valid IC reason to go to GG can be tricky, and having a reason to stay even harder, especily for new characters.
So far I am relying on the entertainment factor, and slight IC interest in some strange messed up amnesiacs who apparently are something to do with a company named after a type of large shrimp :P -
As an aside, I am one of the serial victims in sirens (not in BB I rule BB!) and I will keep on attacking a superior target till they make that criticle mistake.
Though I may die 100 times for every one of my kills, that one victory is pure nectar.
((obviously this only counts with regards to Spurr my blaster. My scrapper kicked behind till I deleated him))
-
In pvp and pve I have exactly the same attitude with regards to things I say.
This is a "comic book" game and you have to expect your villains and heroes to have some form of banter or trash talking, and as long as it does not resort to expletives I dont care.
But in the above cases it is all good natured, if anyone starts getting angry then they should take a break, the game is not going anywhere.
Sure there are idiots who dont seem to be able to draw a line between fun banter and insults.
Just as there are people who get really angry when they get defeated in pvp..strange people.

There are quite a few rp-groups in coh/cov, and most aspects of rp are covered in some form.
Dealing with non-rp groups:
Heres my methods.
1: ((keep all your own OOC chatter in brackets)) ((youd be suprised at how many role-players you can lure out that way)).
2: Ask the team if they are IC or not when you join, that way if you dont want to team up you can thank them for the offer but decline and leave.
3:Use broadcast to ask for rp team invites, or if in doubt make one yourself -
Yeah it would be much better if they produced a coherent time line/history in one go. And make it available in the gme boxes..as opposed to trawling through the net.
When I first came to coh a number of my chars were totaly out of synch with the game (like a lot of peoples) as there is no information provided in the game boxes.
---
As a gm I try to make sure that my players are aware that suppliments and updates are only used in my games if I have had a chance to go through them first. 1: to see if I want to use it all. 2: to "edit" them for the games I am running.
In COH in has not effected my rp yet...oh except for a couple of my heroes not being overly impressed by certain heroes actions as there was no real risk..(I then learnt that the med-evac teleporters were introduced after the Rikti war..oh well). -
Super jump,speed,fly.
They are all good powers for PvP and PvE, Teleport is good in PvE but is not overly good in PvP.
The big problem with teleport is that people can see where you are going to tp too, well I can and I am King of the bad PvPers !!!111!!!
Admittedly you require quick reflexes to take advantage of the teleport "give away" (as I call it), but when up against enemies with flight and ss you can tp and find they are still in attack rangfe of you.

Yeah Im avoiding pvp at the moment (and I feel bad, with me not there who is feeding all the poor villains ??
) due to the amount of negative vibes floating around, but I guess it will all quieten down in time for my thousands of alts to reach pvp security level.

Just thought I'd better add that I'm easy with what people do to my chars and would not mind people using any power on my char as long as it was not with intent to cause his direct demise and deletion
If such is the outcome then I would prefer it to go to the areana/pvp zone, though I am happy to admit I doubt it would make much difference to the overall outcome (me being defeated) :P -
Depends upon the game and what type of interaction it supports between characters.
If a person wishes to engage in combat with my char then they can take it to a pvp or arean zone, which I know is not fluidic or perfect way of dealing with the situation. But it is the only real way provided to those who choose to role play in this non role play game. -
Sorry I missed a few days of posts on this thread, had computer issues.
Wow 8 pages..
I guess we would not have so much trouble with the whole "good/evil" question if they did exist as tangible forces as opposed to social constructs, which is the problem I have with the "hero in COV baaad!!" argument.
How is a hero who wants to destroy Arachnos and bring about a benevolent reigeme change in the rogue isles different from a Villain who wants to destroy Arachnos and rule the isles for himself?
One issue that has been brought up is that when other characters find out the "hero" character would be killed, but considering the isles are full of constant infighting even within arachnos itself, how would this be worse or different than characters of different groups encountering each other?
It also raises the issue of how will the villains find out that the character is opposed to them?
I certainly hope that such characters would not be walking around telling everyone they are heroes!
An example I think of of a "dark hero" in COV is the snake hunter guy you meet in mercy island, ok he may be doing it for money but he is making the streets of mercy island safe for all the inhabitants by exterminating the eeeevil snakes.
There exists another possibility for a character of "noble" virtues, a dedicated medic/healer who exists to make people whole and well no matter their alignment, sure they might be causing more harm by keeping scum alive but they are still doing good surely? -
Ok I admit that I see no issue with playing a "hero" type character in CoV, as such a character can in my eyes be played in COV without having to ignore game plot, or forcing a different interpretation of the game on other players and thus somehow ruining their game.
But I will admit that I have no got a villain over lvl 20 so there is game content I have not seen, but from what I have seen and heard in COH, I cannot see anything that might preclude such characters from existing.
What I want to know is why is there such a bad reaction to characters like this?
I have a character who fits into the possilbe "anti-hero" or "fallen-hero" concepts,a character who was once a hero but ended up commiting some pretty major crimes (murder, assault, murder) and was locked up in the zig...
This char views himself as a hero, his goals are the same but his methods have changed, and he firmly beleives that he is above normal laws and morals hence why he can do what ever he wants..
Is that "bad"? -
Dont know if there is an anti hero SG, but I'd create a char for such a thing, the idea has merit and does not break the game in any way.
Its easy to see how some elements of hero society would be displaced into arachnos's camp by violent actions or a zero tolerance approach to anything that opposes them.
Hell the hero could think hes a god and has the right to do what ever he/she wants, and be really narced that he/she is forced to work for Recluse due to the stupidity of paragon -

As has been proven a team of corrupters can clear the zone of heroes

Bah Obviously Spurr was not around to bravely draw the enemies attacks and save his hero allies :P
Last time I saw a corrupter in Sirens it went like this.
Corrupter: <<follows the innocent yet mighty* Spurr>>
Spurr: <<Now reduced to using hover and tp, gains altitude>>
Corrupter: <<follows some more, along with comments of "oooh you so fast>>.
Spurr: << Shriek>>
Corrupter: <<falls out of the sky and I dont see it again>>.
:P
*Disclaimer:
The term mighty is obviously subjective and open to interpretation. -
You're wrong!! And in sooooooo many ways!!11!!
Ok I admit my MM isnt at a lvl to pvp yet, but my blaster got killed by a MM once or twice..perhaps more.
If you can hit anyone with a hold type power/effect or de-buff them then your bots can chew them up quite happily
The main reason why I think my minions might suck in pvp is that on countless times Ive been running along, ordered them to attack and only then noticed that've got stuck on a wall/bus stop/sign.. -
I concentrate on making sure the world works around the players and let them have pretty much free reign over their actions, be they good or bad.
I will not create scenarios that they "just happen" to have the skills to get through, though I will subtly point out to them those things that can aid them if they have not noticed them ooc, but I will not tell them how those things might help them.
I try to make the villains/lands as realistic as possible, in a land with teleporting mages and rogues you would expect banks to really have planned for those things when building their safe (planned that is to the extent they are capable of).
I also like to include the possibility of encountering other "player"like groups/characters or the results of their actions...
"So Bob the Archmage, you alarm wards start to go off..you look out the window of your groups tower and see 12 individuals clearly prepering to attack....as you look down out of the window you notice that there is a line of climbing spikes that ends at your window.....how many healthpoints you got again? hmm pardon yeah this is just like the time back when you and the guys were lvl 17 and attacked that party of eeeevil robber barons, yess I took notes..." -
Freedom Flight have been a bit scattered recently but we're more than happy to RP with people...Hell when we find rpers we will resort to following them around zones to get some RP..well I will anyway
-
hmmmm and how long before we get:
Rule 22b: pig tails win! -
Now the idea of a group of heroes claimng an area of the city in a pseudo-facist take over styleeeeeeee is a groovey plot idea
I await your padded out suggestions, though it does look like some of the issues you mention are mirrored in the "with the world or against it" thread ( especily talking about character Security levels which some of us use as a valid IC tool and others dont ).

The trouble is with the concept of a unifying set of guidelins/rules is that you're automaticly going to have to define what the accepted form of role-play is, which is something that I imagine every forum dedicated to role-play has tried to so at some point.
I tend to role-play in the setting of the game COH, that is I use the tools the game provides to role-play my character and interact with other characters, no extra external tools are needed for the style I play.
If I want to fight a hero I use the arena, I dont need to use a created tabletop rules system to run the encounter and I also do not run or play in set "statics" which I have seen some others doing.
Unlike the "GGs" who seem to have thousands at their meets (heroes as faaaaaar as the eye can see) I would estimate that I have met only about 25 other people who rp like me, and then rarely in any large groups the average size is about 5 characters in a group at any one time.
As our style does not need rules constructs, we would pretty much automaticly be edged out of "The community" especilly if it has set itself up to be a paragon of quality role-play.
And once lines like that are drawn they are pretty hard to remove, and any differences or sterotypes will start to reinforce themselves amongst the players.
Bah I ramble..
As an aside:
The commonly accepted rules for rp I have encountered are:
1:Have fun
2:Be responsible.
DG> -
My only worry is that smaller groups or those who do not agree to a general player rule-set will be marginalised to such an extent that they will have little "voice" in the player community.
-
My MM is only lvl 12 at the moment, but I like poison so far the ability to heal is useful and the de-buffs are quite nice too, hit the bad guy with weaken and they rarely get into hand to hand with my minions
HAve not used TA in COV yet, if its similar at all to the defender TA then its good, web arrow is great and you can fire out ice arrows with some speed too .
I'd guess though that TA is better for team use it has more AOES at low lvl and Glue arrow is loved by all. -
Hmm yeah but in making a team and crushing them, would make yourself and allies no better than the origional culprit.
And what is one persons "whine" is another persons "comment"/"complaint".
Lets be honest, at the moment there is a lot of trash talking in COH/COV, in most zones all you have to do is loiter near the populated areas and all you see is a stream of people deriding/mocking/insulting others, often over nothing more than getting themselves defeated in a fight, making a mistake or asking a question.
Yes there most likely is a greater number of people out there being nice and polite, but they are not the ones broadcasting on broadcast/local chat.
Everyday the more I see the word n00b the more I find it offencive, whats wrong with people being new and inexperienced?
No community can survive long or remain healthy by picking on or insulting the new blood.
A lot of problems would not be, if people were just patient and took a breath before typing.
If you want people to be polite and nice, be so to them.
DG> -
Ive seen a lot of SG spamming in Mercy, but have never had any invites on any of my COV alts (except for the one I tookup).
-
Im not sure if a text based game is best suited for accents, unless you make it clear that you are typing in an accent then people may just think you cannot spell :P
Perhaps just adding descriptives that point out your chars accents (either in emotes or your character info screen)?
