Quote:IIRC, the Mu pet only has 2 attacks that deal damage. Then it has a disorient, a sleep, and EMPulse (for some reason). When people used to take Patron Pets (before GR) the Mu pet for Doms (and now trollers) was widely regarded as the best since it healed you too.
I took it on my dom at the time and found it quite useless, low damage, low heal (and it was before the dom buffs, before I had permadom and purple sets so my dom was in need of extra damage when out of domination, even then I found it wasn't good), iirc the stalker/scrapper version is the same one but without the heal.
IMO, the best patron pet for Scrappers is the Coral Warder from Leviathan Mastery. Actually has some decent controls and debuffs attached to some of the attacks, which aren't all that bad on their own. YMMV. -
Quote:Yes, but in practice more of the damage from Fire Ball is effective.Ball Lightning does more damage than Fire Ball. Mid's numbers are wrong. However, Fire Ball seems to crit more often.
Fire Ball delivers most of the damage up front, with some coming in DoT.
Ball Lightning delivers some of the damage up front, with most coming in DoT.
Therefore, many mobs will be dead before Ball Lightning delivers it's full damage if you have a high kill speed. -
Quote:I may be wrong, but on City of Data it looks like Water Spout only has knockUP and not knockBACK despite the power description. If that's the case, it would be far more productive for a melee character to use than a clone of Tornado.Don't have any personal experience with Water Spout, but I do have hundreds of hours logged with Tornado, and honestly I don't understand the Water Spout love on the forum. Back before the PvP revamp, I could understand falling in love with an autohit power, but for PvE purposes it seems to me that the chaos caused by Waterspout would be counterproductive on a melee character.
Then again, maybe I'm missing a critical difference between Water Spout and Tornado. -
What are some thoughts you all have of taking Leviathan Mastery for this Scrapper? My concern with it is it lacks an AoE attack, but Water Spout seems good and the pet is IMO the most useful available to Scrappers. It also has Hibernate. That could come in handy.

Quote:If you don't need to using it that frequently then removing the timer would literally have no effect at all for you.You should really think that no one has said they need this 45 second issue. My Ice tankers are all very well built and play them well. That is still irrelevant to the issue at hand. What I am and many others are saying is that the timer no hib/no phase for Ice tankers need to go away or modified to something else.
I am the OP and I have not mentioned nothing about PvE and PvP stats.

Quote:I'd support Ice Tankers getting Icy Bastion, but I doubt it'll happen.Yeah, it'd be nice if Hibernate for Tankers was exempted from the NoPhase thingy. (Or just give my Tanker the option to take Icy Bastion instead.)
I think the short recharge on Tanker Hibernate is enough to distinguish it from the pool powers. If you need to be using Hibernate every 30-45 seconds as some have suggested in this thread I'd venture to guess you aren't using your other powers effectively. Ice should barely be taking hits to begin with, you have Tanker HP, and you are able to use a self-heal/HP boosting power pretty frequently if you have decent recharge. If I were going to make an Ice Tanker, I might not even take Hibernate. -
Quote:I'm not sure how they can even fix the pet AI to be honest with you.I came back from a haitus recently myself, and while I haven't had this old annoyance pop up yet (thankfully,) I can't help but notice that pet AI is still incredibly broken to the point of rendering certain combos virtually unplayable.
I feel your frustration. I've lost count of all the little bugs and annoyances I've noticed since coming back that have been there for years. -
Minor thread necro. Suppose you were building a BS/Invuln of your own. No limit to prices, no requirements on power selection. The focus was on making it as effective as possible, a near-master of two trades: tanking for a team, and DPS. Broadsword obviously can't do that second one as well as some other sets, but it can perform well. What would that build look like, and is there a specific reason you would make some of the choices different from those I made?

Quote:I have to say, as much as I like the idea of putting in something new, a Build Up change is still the most probable change if any make it at all. A lot of the other changes are too much like Titan Weapons. Pommel Smash has potential, but weighs heavily in the single target sphere. It also has some troubling problems with the way powers can and can't be changed in the game. Numerical changes to Build Up simply avoid all of these things and have been widely accepted by the posters in the thread already. The thing about changing Build Up is that it's simple. No new artwork, animation changes, or changes to attack powers. It also works for both single target and aoe comparisons. The only things that are needed is how high of a damage buff, for how long, and what cool down is needed if the duration is lengthend.
So that while both Katana and BS use their build-up, BS will do more damage per hit, but katana will still pull ahead after muliple attacks. This also negates the issue of BS consistantly out performing Katana by using -res on attacks.
The downside, is that it's not entirely interesting as so many other ideas that provide the set with something that sets it apart from katana in how the set plays. I'm not sure if that's an absolute necessity at this point as I still contend that the difference for most players is probably at first, asthetic (concept). Which is why it may not be necessary to re-evaluate how the powerset plays by adding an entirely new mechanic. I'm betting that's partly why new mechanics are being delivered to players in new sets instead of changing old sets.
If someone more acquainted with game balance would like to suggest numbers for a change to Build Up then we should be able to formalize it as an official request coming out of the discussion in this thread. I believe that the general consensus was that the Build Up change should try to avoid a self debuff at the end, so that's somewhat limiting on how high the numbers can get. It also means that the only real way to balance it then is to increase recharge.
I'm still a fan of going the Inner Light route myself, but simple increases might work as well. -
Well, first of all using Nerve is a bad idea. It'll only give a bonus of maybe 2 or 3%. I'd go with Spiritual if your final build doesn't include Hasten. Cardiac if it does. Maybe Musculature, but that's better for a Scrapper than a Brute.
Second, Invuln was a good choice for a secondary if you want to tank (or be tanky). You have the right idea of skimping on F/C defense for higher E/N. I'm short on time for loading things into Mids, but you shouldn't have any problem outperforming Willpower. You have a psi hole, but that isn't as big a difference as a lot of people think, and with an Invuln you'll have higher defense and resistance as well as a lot debuff protection. Your regen will be lower, but that's somewhat offset by using Dull Pain appropriately during combat and can be completely removed from the equation with Rebirth Destiny (the Radial tree). Give it time, Invuln will reward you. -
Synapse has discovered us and is trying to make us give up on our evil plot to make Broadsword better :P

Quote:Drop SotW, I'm pretty sure GC is part of the highest damage chain for Katana. Plus, if you wait long enough we will have 3 extra slots supposedly so that should help.Yeah, that's what's got me interested in it. It's a fairly odd combination that I don't think I'll ever see a lot of. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to make a completely gimped pair somehow (not that I'm against that, I just like to know upfront).
I started a build in Mid's, but man, I'm going to be starved for slots for most of my career. I figure I'll take both Sting of the Wasp and Gambler's Cut while leveling, but then drop one of them later in a respec, which should help a bit. But I'm still going to be very slot-starved. -

Quote:Do this, but with Char. That solves your problem. You aren't wasting a power and you get to keep better damage from Fire attacks. If you join in on Hami Raids, LGTFs, Id suggest the hold over the pet. At the very least, the hold can be 1 slotted for ACC and still be worthwhile. If you have slots to spare, then it can be made better or add more set bonuses (Basilisk's Gaze for an additional 7.5% +RCH)

If you mean that Broadsword should be made less end heavy, I'm not sure that's at all the way to go. Broadsword is supposed to be end heavy, but the reward used to be higher damage. We don't really see that anymore unless it's in the window of a single attack. Hence, the discussion throughout this thread.

Quote:I'm not sure that the idea of Pommel Strike/Smash doesn't accomplish the same thing as changing Broadsword Build Up in single target comparisons, though I suppose it accomplishes much less to help Broadsword AoE.I'm not certain if that's the right way to look at balancing the sets.
Instead, I'd say that they should be balanced to end up as even as possible given an amount of time.
So say, in the time that it takes for BS to pull off 2 attacks, Katana does three. The result is nearly the same amount of endurance cost for nearly the same amount of damage done.
This is an extremely general description, because as we know, what attacks are used, how long of an amount of time should it take etc..
It's one thing to say, if we had a graph of both sets performance over time that there were spikes that showed Katana was ahead at certain points, and BS ahead at others, but when the interval was done, they were nearly even. As it is now, at least in dps comparisons, katana pulls ahead, and stays ahead.
So, if we stick to dps comparisons, that pertains to single targets (generally, since there's no discusion of aoe dps), than BS needs something to catch up to Katana.
The only alternative to is move away from single target analysis and look at multiple targets, so that the sets end up at the same place, at the same time, against a group of foes. In that instance, BS needs a new mechanic which is what I suggested earlier. While I like the idea, it's not ideal since it requires adding a completely new dimension to BS vs. the simplest change which is to temporarily increase BS damage via changing it's Build Up.
I have an alternate solution to help Broadsword AoE as well: increase the arc of Headsplitter by 10-20 degrees. That would make it somewhere in the neighborhood of a 30-40 degree cone which would make it significantly easier to catch multiple targets. -
Quote:Well, I'd be inclined to say five or more. However, I'm heavily biased as I play Broadsword and don't play Katana.I think before numbers can really enter the picture, we really need to define intent.
Currently, Katana pulls ahead of BS after two attacks in terms of damage.
So, how many attacks should it take for Katana to pull ahead of BS after we buff BS' burst? Three? Five?
I'd think that the duration of the -Res from Pommel Strike (if we are still discussing that particular solution) would play the biggest role in that. A 5 second debuff would make Katana pull ahead much more quickly than a 10 second debuff for example.
Another option is to take another look at our original definition of what we wanted the relationship between the sets to be. Would it be acceptable, for example, if Broadsword dealt consistently higher damage at a high endurance cost while Katana became the DPE king? The mechanical choice between the sets would then become one of whether or not you wanted to be chomping blue inspirations like candy. Pommel Strike would allow such a change without forcing current Broadsword players to use it. If they are happy with the status quo, they could simply keep playing the way they already are in almost every case.
Also, maybe call it Pommel Smash? Do we like that more than Pommel Strike? -
Quote:Well, not to nitpick but I'd imagine it really is overkill. You would have diminishing returns from it with high Fury levels and probably find yourself over the damage cap from time to time.Seriously...obviously they work well together...more damage on top of more damage on top of more damage. How couldn't that work well together?
SS/FA, on the other hand, avoids that problem by having Fiery Embrace which just adds more damage from a seperate source rather than a +Damage buff. -
If it were me, I'd intentionally leave out Granite. You could make a pretty solid and fairly high damage Katana/Stone if you left it out. It's not a common sight, which might just make me try it some day. I generally avoid Stone Armor because I don't want to play City of Statues.
-
I would advise against this particular combination, not because of any problem with one of the sets, but because the combination of the two has little synergy. With /SR you have no use for Parry which is the principle benefit of Broadsword.
If you want to try Broadsword, you may get more from a BS/Shield, /Regen, /Electric, /Dark, /Fire or possibly a /Willpower. All of those can leverage Parry for better protection. Electric Dark and Fire (and arguably Shield) all help to make up for the generally low DPS of Broadsword.
If you would rather try /SR then I would advise a Dark Melee/SR or Kinetic Melee/SR. Dark adds -ToHit to stack with your defense and comes with a heal that is much better than the medicine pool. Kinetic Melee adds -Damage on your opponents which helps make up for the fact that /SR has little resistance to damage that actually does hit them.
None of that is meant to say BS/SR is not a viable combination. It's just not optimal. If you are set on this combination I could try my hand at a build for you, complete with theoretical advice on playing the character (I have a lot of sword experience, very little SR experience). -
Quote:Good point, that'd probably work out better.Interesting, but I could see that causing a net DPS increase, and possibly getting into Power Creep with Katana, since with Slice, Whirling Sword, and Headsplitter and a nice group of mobs, you'd be able to assure a recharge every 8ish seconds. Mebbe make it akin to Concentrated Strike, where Pommel Strike recharges just offa Criticals on Headsplitter?

Quote:This is probably the easiest way, as it requires no restrictions in choice of secondary.A popular option for some TA characters is to make the character Magic or Tech origin. That way you can use your origin power (Apprentice charm or Taser) to light the slick.
If you are worried about redraw, your best choice is Archery.
If you aren't too worried about redraw, you can play tactically using a TA/Beam Rifle for some pretty interesting possibilities. The AoE from Oil Slick complements the relatively low AoE damage from Beam Rifle and can be lit by every single attack in Beam Rifle. EMP Arrow combined with your Beam attacks will apply a very strong -Regen debuff, making AVs much easier for your team to take down. I've been contemplating making one myself, but I'm reserving my time for a Titan Weapons character once that set is out. -
Quote:LotGs are one set that's actually way easier to get with merits than on the market. As an Empath you should have no problem joining TFs and picking up reward merits. You can use those to buy IOs you need first, then buy IOs that sell high. Alignment Merits from morality missions are also your friend.Well I've been playing with my spider friend lately, it seems pretty good to me, sure it is squishier than I am most of the time but it adds to my damage. The AoE immob it does is really nice so everyone stays together for Neutron / Haze (I still have Haze, but I will get rid of it when I can).
I just got another LOTG: Recharge today as well, I'm using a slightly modified version of Doomguide's build (using the enhancements I have for now until I can afford the Purples/PVPs and get the chance to trade for level 30 enhancements), but it certainly looks like a worthwhile goal for my main toon!
Thank you for all the information you've shared with me! -
I'm not really seeing the big deal here. I mean, if you don't like the bonuses don't slot the set. You're raging about one little set bonus. I understand that these will be things you pay for, but again if you don't like what the set brings for you, don't buy it. There are a lot of things that it makes a lot more sense to be upset about in this game than a set bonus that probably isn't even finalized on something that doesn't officially exist yet. If you need to be mad about something, join the Dominators and complain about lack of powersets. That's actually a more relevant and better founded concern than nitpicking set bonuses.
In addition to that, have you considered the possibility that proc in the Defender set has been coded to accept +Healing set bonuses? -
Quote:While I disagree with some of your other comments, this one is actually just wrong because you are confusing Neutron Bomb with Atomic Blast.Neutron Bomb - While I hate to disagree with Doom, I wouldn't take it because at 50th you can take a nuke with your iPowers. I uses to have a nuke with my emp, and used it quite often but it did cause me problems at times with the drain. Better just to skip it and take Judgement instead for the big boom.
