Need Help with my Empathy / Radiation Blast Build

Hello! I just came back a while ago and have been playing with my respecs a bit, I want to try this build out now but I'm not really sure about a few things.

First, I don't know how good (or awful!) the pet is; Second, I don't know if I want to slot Cosmic Burst as a Stun or an attack.

Third, Would it be too mean to get rid of Resurrect?

I don't mind changing EVERYTHING if it's needed, I'd rather avoid purples/pvp sets but I suppose I could try to get them.. eventually.

Oh yeah and, right now I'm only level 47, I'll get rid of some hasten slots when I actually hit 50.

And this is the build I currently have, which works well for me but I kinda hate those awful slots on kick, and I'd like a spider buddy... if it doesn't suck.

Howdy!

Tossed this together after looking at things and trying to get a feel for what you want to do.

I did sacrifice some Defense compared to your build, but the reason being is I also kept a close eye on each power's overall enhancement values. i.e. your damage, endurance, and recharge numbers. Ya still have high Defense in the lategame, but your powers will be more economical.

Also worked in the new Burnout power, as it'll let you sling your RAs again as soon as the first ones wear off.

Hasten has a 10 second downtime with just the IOs, but as soon as you can get a Spiritual Core Paragon in your Alpha Slot, Hasten is permanent.

With perma-Hasten and a Spiritual Core in your Alpha Slot, your pet Disruptor is permanently out, too. And yes, it is good!

You DEFINITELY want to slot Cosmic Burst as an attack. It's Rad's strongest hit, so attack slotting takes it from 76 or so to over 190 damage with Assault running. Won't need to stun stuff if you can just flatout kill it.

Hope this gives ya some ideas! I personally always wind up tweaking "perfect" setups to what I enjoy, so I'd recommend ya do the same. If it's no fun, there's no point in playing it.

Welcome back!
1) It's a pet, you're an Emp ... you could turn a wet noodle into a threat. Have yet to try a pet myself on one of my Emps but I'm definitely aiming to get one on at least one build for each in the long term.
2) Slot Cosmic Burst as an attack. Generally I'm looking at either 5 Decimation or 5 Apocalypse with the 6th slot being either an Absolute Amazement Stun duration or a common Stun duration.
3) With the ability to combine inspires to create a different inspire I'd definitely consider Resurrect optional. I'd definitely not devote anything beyond the base slot. Those slots are always better used to avoid needing to Rez in the first place. That base slot should be a Endred as Rez a) expensive to cast, b) too long a recharge timer even on high recharge builds to get multiple teammates back on their feet. c) It should ideally only be used in Combat where you don't want to find it can't be used do to you being low on End while the target needs to get back into things NOW. If the target doesn't need to Rez asap then making or passing a wakie should be the go to option saving the Rez for a potential disaster around the next corner.

That's all I have time to say for now, back later with more thoughts.

Thanks for the help and build recommendations! I really want that tiny spider friend and was really excited when I saw that I could perma it on MIDS, so I'm glad it's good.

I've checked your build BloodPython and I there is indeed a big difference in endurance cost and some important powers seem to recharge faster, I've never gone on an iTrial or anything like it yet so I didn't know things that I considered important in the past (Kb protection, Softcapping defense) aren't that important anymore, is it because of Destiny?

Doomguide I can't believe I hadn't thought of that before! I completely forgot about common Stun duration IOs /facepalm, and yes I will probably get rid of Rez since the only times I've had to use it lately is to spoil little kids.

I like the amount of defense you've garnered while still maintaining high global recharge, something Empathy loves in spades. +Global Recharge is always my number one goal on a teaming Empath.

Swap the enhancement choices/slotting between Maneuvers and Weave. Maneuvers base End cost is higher, you'll save more end by getting the endred in Maneuvers rather than Weave.

I'd consider moving a slot from Recovery Aura to Adrenaline Boost and slotting an Endmod/Rech in the 6th slot of AB. AB will then provide enough +recovery by itself to counter nuke or other -1000% recovery crashes. Most of your teammates will find the base amount of +recovery in RA to be more than enough. That 4th slot is more valuable somewhere else (such as in AB) than the extra +recovery it'll provide in RA.

I generally go with just the base slot in Stamina unless it's more a solo rather than team oriented build.

Blood Python's slotting in Atomic Blast is intriguing ... despite its obviousness never occurred to me to slot up Damage/Mez HO's. May have to see what I can do in my own build that way.

Tweaked some your build might look like this:

And here's what I'm aiming for on Reyna Morningdew my Emp/Rad/Elec with my next respec/update to her main build. Had to smile too when I saw my slotting in Cosmic Burst, apparently decided to move the 6th slot out elsewhere. Her original leveling build was with Dark Mastery and she ran Oppressive Gloom. Loved to stack the stuns of Cosmic Burst and OG to mez bosses so extending the stun duration on CB was helpful.

Thanks for the build Doomguide!

I think I'll use your modifications, I am not sure if I'll keep aim or not though, the Recovery Aura change makes a lot of sense though!

Thanks Again, I love you my Defender Friends, and I'm sure my new spider pet will as well.

Aim is nice for two reasons. First for spiking your damage. Second, in this build, for adding to S/L defense. Ideally with no Defense Debuff Resistance (DDR) I'd want somewhere between 7-10% over the soft-cap so that the first 'lucky' blow merely drops you to the soft-cap which in turn means it takes another 'lucky' blow to start a potential cascade defense failure. Meaning I'd be shooting for 52-55% defense on a character with no DDR. More cushion over 45% one gets the longer the odds of cascade failure being triggered. It's the difference between (roughly) 1 in 20 (a single lucky blow) and 1 in 400 (2 lucky blows closely timed) by defense debuffing attacks. Obviously whether pursuing it to this degree is worth it is a very individual thing ... but one must have goals *smile*. As one can see Reyna's +defense is non-existent. She relies on teammates, accolades (Eye of Magus) and inspires as needed. She also leveled up primarily within her SG which meant she was commonly teaming with three, four or more Empaths (often enough 7 of them) which is a very different picture from what most Empaths see while leveling.

Further tweaks and costs, adding an Absolute Amazement set (swapping Kick for Boxing) moving slots to Boxing plus adding a slot and a Glad +3%def (earned by A-Merits is how I've done it ... either selling off valuable IO's purchased with A-merits to raise the inf or directly for the Glad) bumped the defense to about 50 and dropped to a hair under 120 seconds recharge on Hasten outside of the Alpha slot:

Since theres alot of inconsistency in the thread, just wanted to back up a couple things about rad blast:

- proc out Neutrino Bolt, get as many procs in there as you can reasonably fit + 1 or 2 acc/dmg hami-Os
- Take Cosmic Burst and slot with 5x apoc (minus the proc, which should go in neutrino, if you cant afford 6 apocs, put priority in proccing out neutrino), or 5x decimation on a 'budget' build. The stun is very nice, but its not really worth slotting, at the very most put a dmg/mez HO, acc/mez HO, or stun IO in it along with 5 damage set IOs.
- Take and use Irradiate and pop an Achilles Heel proc in it along with 5x armageddons or 5x oblits, pending on budget again. There is also a pvp IO -res proc, but it is pretty pricey.
- Electron Haze is bad. Neutron Bomb is okay if you want more aoe.
- I typically don't support taking nukes on support type toons unless you have a way to shoot through the crash (like Transference, or to a lesser extent, heat loss), RA is unfortunately not strong enough to do this. No end = no attacking, no emping = bad.
- Only take laser beam eyes if you need it for set bonuses.

Agreed on Neutrino Bolt as far as using procs will produce much more damage. I use Centrioles rather than Nucleolus as I typically have enough Global Accuracy plus To Hit to insure it will hit reliably. The added range is nice. Decimation is a solid alternate slotting especially if one needs more recharge to get perma Hasten (or get closer to). It's still slotting for damage first and in a team setting the proc cannon is nice but not near as important.

Cosmic Burst - Think we are all agreeing it needs to deal damage first then worry about anything else

I grabbed Irradiate for Reyna but she does play up close and in melee. I should have brought it up (it occurred to me at one point) but I suspected Emo Princess intends to stay at range and that was why Irradiate was skipped (and perhaps why EH was chosen). Certainly EH is less favored as it has unreliable kb and it definitely doesn't play nice with the PBAoE nature of Irradiate.

Nukes - Here I would disagree. Any team that can't survive for 20 seconds without an Emp after said Emp has nuked the spawn ... either the Empath needs to learn when (and how) to better to use their nuke or said team needs more help than a single Empath (or other Defender) is ever going to provide and quite deserves a good round of Vengeance. Geas of the Kind Ones and/or having a few blues handy (just like any Blaster would as well) should be quite sufficient while the team mops up/moves to next spawn and the Empath toggles back up. A little forethought and preparation should make the nuke crash a non-issue the vast majority of the time.

Laser Beam Eyes - equal X-Ray Beam? Again basically I agree I've got it in there for the Decimation 6.25% recharge bonus but will add I like it for no other reason than I get tired of hitting the same attack (Neutrino Bolt) repeatedly.

Don't worry . I know Irradiate is better than EH, I'm not a big fan of cones and Irradiate has more -def to boot! The KB hasn't been a problem yet because I usually duo with my brother (BroadSword/WP Scrapper) and I hover above him most of the time.

I only picked EH for now because I can't slot Irradiate for Recharge at the moment, my funds are very limited, I know my join date is misleading but I don't even have a 50 yet (this is my closest toon), so slotting oblits on it would make go over the rule of 5 for 5% recharge with my current build (4x Doctored Wounds, 1x Red Fortune)... it probably isn't a big deal but I keep obsessing over recharge, I hate exemping for that reason.

Oh yeah, I have a small question, I was looking at Wentworth's too see how much inf things that I'm missing are worth, and I noticed that Enzyme Exposures supposedly enhance "Defense Debuffs"... but MIDS lets me slot it as either a buff or a debuff, is that normal? Am I looking at the wrong HO in Wentworth's?

Thanks again for all your help

So the itent of Enzyme Exposures is that they are supposed to enhance Defense Debuffs but not buffs. However due to the way in which enhancements work they will enhance Defense Buffs so long as the power in question accepts Endurance Reduction enhancements. This is technically a bug and as such it is entirely possible that the devs will one day fix it however until that happens Enzymes do buff defense.

The devs will pretty much never fix this. They are well aware of its existence. To elaborate on this, the way original enhancements were designed they buff both the value they are supposed to and its opposite (Damage buffs Damage Resistance, Defense Buff buffs Defense Debuff, etc). This only becomes a problem with HOs because of the fact that they can often be slotted in powers that allow this effect to occur. Many times, HOs that buff the opposite effect of your power provide a higher enhancement value (but not always). That's why it has become common practice to slot builds that way.

I would also like to comment on your Arachnos pet. Assuming that you already know you have to go redside and complete a story arc to get it, you may find it a bit disappointing as far as AI goes. The patron pets tend to be kind of fragile, but you're an empath so that will be less of a problem. What you'll want to watch out for is the extra spawn it will occasionally decide to attack.

Welcome back to CoX, and I'm glad that you are playing an Empath. They seem all too rare these days. I had an Empath/Rad on my ITF team today and they were easily the most important member of that team. I'm not sure we would have finished it without them, especially considering I was tanking for us on my Scrapper since the tank kept running off on his own and dying.

Well, that explains the price for Enzymes! I'm gonna have to save up a bit but that's okay, gives me something to do ingame while waiting for my brother to catch up in levels.

I'm sort of disappointed that I can't seem to rename my spider, but don't worry I already went redside for patron pools since I wanted scorpion shield from the start... It is sort of fragile but it's sturdier than those "surprise" PuG level 10 /fire scrapper sidekicks. I only use it when I solo/duo anyways since I can't afford to keep it buffed with my current Fortitude recharge (20 seconds right now).

Thank you so much for your speedy replies! (And the welcome!) I kinda wish I had started using the forums sooner, this is such a wonderful community

Now to gently pet the market to see if it gives me a few hundred mil.

If you wanted to be safe against any Dev changes to the way Enzymes work plan on using Cytoskeletons, they're the HO's intended to buff Defense.

I hate exemping for that reason.
Slot the minimum level IO's for the individual sets and you can be at or very near 45% S/L defense while exemped as low as level 30, the minimum at which you can pick up Scorpion Shield.

Adding in Irradiate, dropped Electron Haze. Moved Scorpion Shield to 35th (swapped places with Neutron Bomb), slotting up Neutrino Bolt with procs, swapped Assault and Maneuvers (to get the +defense in prior to 35th) and slotted, in general level 25 or 30 IO sets and you'll have a very sturdy and readily exempable build as low as 30th.

Neutrino Bolt - I agree, go procs...its your little machine gun.
Assault - Not sure if I would go Assault with all the rest of your buffs.
Fortitude - Recharge, recharge, recharge! Better to get it on as many team members as possible, even if its just the default. In mine, I got the LotG globe recharge, End/Recharge, and then two Hami IO that give recharge/ +to hit / defense.
Tactics - I never go beyond 3 slots with Tactics, but that's me.
Irradiate - While I know alot of folks would disagree, I only have 3 Achilles' Heel set here. Damage is the base 41 pts (per Mids) but the debuff is a good -53% on defence.
Electron Haze - I would take this power and use it in my attack chain just for this one IO... Force Feedback: Change for +Recharge.
Recovery Aura - I just have 3 crafted recharge IOs, and two End because I rather have it up as often as possible even if I only do 366% instead of your higher number.
Regeneratioin Aura - Same as mine...
Adrenalin Boost - Same as Recovery Aura, get it recharged as fast as possible. Mine has 3 crafted recharge IOs, one Heal, and one End. With iPowers now, alot of people don't really need the heal or endurance, but haven't met one that didn't like the Recharge + that AB brings.
Atomic Blast - While I hate to disagree with Doom, I wouldn't take it because at 50th you can take a nuke with your iPowers. I uses to have a nuke with my emp, and used it quite often but it did cause me problems at times with the drain. Better just to skip it and take Judgement instead for the big boom.
Resurrect - I would keep it , and at 50th too. While there are a ton more ways to revive then when I first started playing... its nice to have the good old res ready for a quick return for one of your teammates.

Fly - I use a Freebird/Stealth here.
Burnout - a nice little tool to have if the battle goes south on you.
Hasten - Max is 3 on recharge.

/Empaths can turn three people into Jesus, one person into God, and everyone else into the twelve apostles.~Angry_Citizen

Don't you know that discussion of power selection/slotting can ONLY be based on hearsay, rumor, idle speculation, and bald-faced lies??!? ~Elf_Sniper

While I disagree with some of your other comments, this one is actually just wrong because you are confusing Neutron Bomb with Atomic Blast.

Well I've been playing with my spider friend lately, it seems pretty good to me, sure it is squishier than I am most of the time but it adds to my damage. The AoE immob it does is really nice so everyone stays together for Neutron / Haze (I still have Haze, but I will get rid of it when I can).

I just got another LOTG: Recharge today as well, I'm using a slightly modified version of Doomguide's build (using the enhancements I have for now until I can afford the Purples/PVPs and get the chance to trade for level 30 enhancements), but it certainly looks like a worthwhile goal for my main toon!

Thank you for all the information you've shared with me!

LotGs are one set that's actually way easier to get with merits than on the market. As an Empath you should have no problem joining TFs and picking up reward merits. You can use those to buy IOs you need first, then buy IOs that sell high. Alignment Merits from morality missions are also your friend.
