  1. It was a great TF, but the last mission can be a bit frustrating for melee heavy teams like the one I was on. It was almost impossible to put a dent in Battle Maiden before the lights on the ground told us it was time to move, and several times people died as they were just coming through the door. It was very satisfying to complete though, and the visuals were amazing.

AE, mission arc merits, Ouroboros, scanners/newspapers, tips and HVAMs, the Faultline and Hollows revamps, RWZ and Cimerora and Praetoria - all of these point to a general goal of diversifying the paths toward rewards, whether they be XP or otherwise.

The contrast between this general thrust toward multiple paths of advancement and the single path to opening Incarnate is worth noting, I think.
Most of those paths weren't initially available at the start of CoH. They slowly developed over time, as I'm sure changes to the Incarnate system will develop over time. The system just started, I'd say it's a little premature to expect it to have the same level of variance as the rest of the game at this point. As I said, I'm sure the Incarnate arc will get stale in time, and they will make changes.
  3. When people talk about the "tedium" of having to complete new content for the Incarnate system, I have to ask myself why the content was added in the first place. Please forgive me if I'm wrong in the particulars, and I don't claim to know everything about the game, but here's my interpretation:

PROBLEM: People complained that there was no end-game in CoH. When you hit 50, people wanted something to do other than: Grind out Inf, purple-out your build, PvP, hold costume contests, roleplay, make more alts, etc.

As a result, people started proposing solutions, but most of them were based on things they saw in other games they played. The two biggest (in my estimation) of these proposals were:

    1. Expanding PvP into the PvE zones (with /duel, etc). The idea being that since PvP is given as a rationale for playing your 50s instead of retiring them, it should be easier to access/more public. This was largely rejected because most people like the separation of PvE from PvP zones (which is rare in MMOs that have PvP and could be considered a selling point of CoH), don't want the associated griefing/lag, and also because they don't enjoy PvP enough to rationalize massive changes to the game to accomodate a change they wouldn't use (or would actively avoid).

    2. Simply tacking on 10 more levels to the game. The idea being that this is the model most other games use when their end-game content starts getting stale. You can't retire a 50 if the new cap is 60. This idea was largely rejected because it did little to address the actual problem, since players would quickly hit 60 and start complaining about having nothing to do again. They complained that it would make their hard-earned level 50 purples obsolete. They complained that the resources needed to add the new levels would take away from content updates to the early levels which was sorely needed at the time (and I would consider Praetoria and Inherent Fitness to be attempts to address this very issue). They also complained that it would widen the gap between low level players and higher level ones even with the Super SK system, discouraging inter-level teaming.

CoH players didn't want another grind just for the sake of a grind, they wanted CONTENT, compelling, engaging, challenging content without the problems associated with either proposed solution. So the developers tried something new.

SOLUTION: A story-driven end-game that adds to character progression slowly enough that it can't be "finished" in a week, doesn't discourage (but also doesn't require) teaming, doesn't make level 50 purple enhancements obsolete, and doesn't (at least initially) require higher level zones to implement, and challenges your characters in ways they may have never been challenged before.

Naturally, not everyone will be satisfied with the implementation, but I'm absolutely amazed at how well the developers did this. Sure, people will complain that the arc is too hard, and other people will respond that the arc is SUPPOSED to be hard, because that's what we asked them to give us. People will complain that the arc will get stale, and eventually it will, but that's something they can change over time if need be (as they have done with the new cape mission, etc). Personally, I think it will be a long time before the Incarnate initiation arc gets stale for me, because I have very few 50s and because the time investment for maximizing the Incarnate system is so large (by design), that I'm only going to bother with it on characters I really, really enjoy playing. If you have the time and inclination, do it 60 or 100 times though--no one is stopping you. However, I'd argue that the lower level content will get stale much more quickly than the Incarnate arc because all of those 60 or 100 alts had to do the lower level content first (and that's why I love additions like Going Rogue).

This has happened to me before. Once someone did it to me because they were griefing, but usually people do it because they just assume I need the help even if I clearly don't (I consider this a form of...chauvanistic assumption of weakness).

But everytime someone has "kill-stolen" something from me, I look around for like five seconds or so, defeat it, and go on my merry way. Of all the things to get upset over, this is way down at the bottom of my list.
You're missing the point. It isn't the kill-stealing that's annoying, it's the fact that people want you to THANK them for it.

Would it kill you just once to show some appreciation and eat the damn animal? Do you think it's easy to catch those things for you?
Well, I do pat her on the head and say "good kitty". Then I wait until she's gone and pick up the animal by its tail and throw it in the garbage. I had enough strange meals (like squirrel, believe it or not) when I was growing up in Georgia. What can I say, my dad liked to hunt.

Then none of what I said applies to you, since most of the time that I recieve this "help", I have a full or almost full health bar or easy access to a self-heal or inspirations, etc.

You're making a false assumption (but you can't be blamed for that since I didn't provide enough information)--the part that makes it most annoying when I recieve "help" that is really just unintentional kill-stealing, is that I'm not in any real danger. If I were really dying, I would WELCOME the help (and the accompanying RP would be nice too ) But what most often happens is that I have a full health bar (on a brute, usually WP or invuln), the enemy is almost dead, and the stranger blasts away the last sliver of their health. Then they fish for compliments.

So Captain, what you describe is very good behavior that I wish more people would exhibit. It's definitely not what I was complaining about

"Help" of this kind is irritating and unwanted, but the most annoying part is that the person doing it honestly thinks they did you a FAVOR. It's like when my cat brings home a dead animal in its mouth and drops it on my doorstep. I know she means well. In her mind, she saved me from a trip to the grocery store to get dinner...
  7. I don't think he was stealth-editing that post, Forbin. I think he just didn't know how to use quotes, and as a result, he ended Panzerwaffen's post, hit enter, and then added his own highly sarcastic two cents. My guess is he just needs to learn how to use /quote twice in one post.

EDIT: You know, it is actually a little more difficult to post quotes from two different people in the same post. Does someone have things like that stickied somewhere?

Yeah, I've joined my share of those, and they aren't fun. If an SG isn't about friendship, helping each other out, doing things together, etc. I get bored pretty fast, and I feel used. Please don't do that to people--they'll remember it unfavorably. I don't think that's really what you want--you care enough about being socially correct that you asked about this incident on the forums, so I'm hoping you'll do the right thing.

They don't have to be long-known friends, but they should at least know you a *little* before you ask. Try talking to someone for 5 minutes and/or teaming with them and then sending a tell saying (for example):

"Hey (whoever), I like your style, you seem like a good fit for our SG. (insert example of something they do that you like or find positive to butter them up) Interested? If so, I can send you some info?"

They may not say yes, but it beats the heck out of sending a tell to someone you've never met before and asking them to join something. You'll get better results, and people will be less likely to ignore/one-star/call you a spammer. And, it ensures you get quality people on your SG rather than cows on a prestige farm.
  10. It's not just you. I think that for some reason, the extended maintenance is still going on despite the server status saying everything is up.

  12. Let me get this straight--this very old, very tired thread, which should have been removed from the forums long ago...was necroposted by a guy named...Purge. That's a special kind of irony. You can't make stuff like this up, because no one would believe you. You pretty much have to see it for yourself, and then you either laugh or scream until your head explodes.
  13. I've been having exactly the same error for roughly the same amount of time. I've also /petitioned it. You aren't alone. As for a workaround, I'm still able to receive e-mails even though I can't send them, so I can still trade inf and such back and forth between my characters using my fiance's account as an intermediary. I hope they fix this soon.

It's been quite a while since I've gotten any spam, and I don't hide from searches or filter my in-game e-mail. I did get quite a bit of spam e-mails in the past, but I didn't let that affect my e-mail preferences. Not that they weren't annoying (they were), but I was afraid of throwing out the baby with the bathwater at the time.

I don't hide from searches because I almost exclusively PuG. I've had a few bad experiences, but very few of my global friends are on at any given time, and I've had several bad experiences with SG/VGs, AND I play at odd hours. So I either solo or leave myself open for searches.

Knowing Ultimo_, he wouldn't post about how great wheat bread is. He'd post that bread slices are too thin. He'd propose that bread slices be made twice as large. People could suggest to him that he just stack two pieces of bread on top of each other, and he'd say no, that's not fair. He shouldn't have to compromise--bread should only be cut twice as large...or you are trolling him.

  18. Invulnerability is fine the way it is, especially after the passive power buff it recieved not too long ago. If you give an endurance buff to invulnerability, you'd have to give one to shields, SR, etc. No point to that--just slot properly to compensate.

Basically, a Desktop GTS 250, which is far more powerful in both Shaders and Textures than the mobile GTX 260 struggles to push Ultra Mode in 1680*1050, which I suspect is the native resolution of your laptop.

    ***

What I suspect happened is the latest patch automatically set higher shader values than your card can normally push, and the card is increasing it's core-speed to try and compensate. The higher clock-rates are pushing the thermal controls (which Nvidia has issues with to start with).
Thanks, je_siast! I was looking at buying an M15X myself. I was unaware that the GTX 260M could barely handle Ultra Mode with the default monitor resolution of 1600x900, so upgrading to the 1920x1080 display makes no sense at all. So thanks for saving me an extra $100 to spend on other features, and thanks for potentially saving a computer newb like me from overheating his graphics card

EDIT: Also, I want to get 6GB of DDR3 memory, but I'm afraid that might be overkill--my old system had 4GB, but that's what they list as the new minimum spec for Ultra Mode. I plan to pair that with an i7-620M processor & 320GB Hard Drive @ 7,200 RPM. Does that sound like it could come close to maxing out Ultra Mode? This will be my first high-end laptop built exclusively for gaming, and I don't want to sabotage myself before I even buy it.

*Before I start my rant, I want to make it clear that I'm not accusing the OP of THIS thread in particular, I'm going to speak in generalities*

I think that if most of the commonly repeated suggestions were handled in this way, it would definitely take a lot of the tension out of the community that has built up lately. My personal opinion (I have no evidence of this, just a feeling) is that there have been a lot more new threads started lately that are actually necro'd old ideas. It's getting on people's nerves, and even the nicest of forumgoers are getting irritated and hostile.

The irritation is always worse when the person who created the new thread is the same person who posted the older, poorly received thread. It's as though the poster believes that people have forgotten their reasons for disagreeing with them, and now, surely, they'll see the light. Forumgoers who remember the old thread feel insulted at the poster's complete disregard for the opinions of the community, and they're largely correct.

There reaches a certain point where you wish the OP would just admit "This whole thread is a ruse, I'm not really interested in what anyone thinks here. I have no desire to make any concessions at all to my idea, no matter how small. I'm just trying to create the impression that this issue is important by posting it over and over so that the devs will do what I want." It looks less like an intellectual discussion, and more like a kid holding up a candy bar and yelling "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" at the supermarket checkout.

So yes, if the mods automatically folded new threads with old suggestions into the original suggestion thread, I think we'd all be a lot happier, and the forums would be much more friendly (even though I'd say this community is one of the friendlier ones out there.)

The reason this idea is being dismissed largely with "/unsigned" is because it isn't a new idea. It's been suggested before--recently. I suppose people could say "/unsigned...see my previous post in the old thread", but that's a lot of effort for what is, in effect, a necropost. I do agree a certain level of civility is to be expected even if you are frustrated, (that's why JRanger was banned--his long responses to the same suggestions got shorter every time they came up again, until he eventually started saying "no" to everything), but the explanations for why this idea (in the form suggested by the OP) is not optimal have already been presented, debated and discussed. I think it's perfectly okay once that has been done to just recap by saying /agree or /disagree. But that's just my opinion.
