Mercifully, MoP changes the mechanics of loot drops for the Raid Finder, in addition to an innovation they're calling the
    "Bonus Role":
    Quote:
    • Each player has a chance to win loot, independent of the other players.
    • For each player who wins loot, the game randomly assigns them a spec-appropriate item from that boss’s loot table. This subset contains only items that the game (meaning the designers in this case) thinks are appropriate for your class and current spec.
    • Notice that you aren’t rolling Need or Greed. You don’t have an option to Pass. The game just says “Take this.”
    • You can’t trade this item, or that would defeat the purpose of removing the social pressure on groups of strangers. If you don’t want the item, you are free to vendor, delete, or disenchant it.
WoW also has "Area of Effect Looting", which makes farming much less of a chore.

WoW's deep questing system does indeed have a lot to offer soloing and small groups. The Cataclysm expansion introduced a lot of zone-wide linear quest chains, but MoP's scenarios hold a lot of promise for content that's somewhere between solo questing and raiding.

As for professions - and making money off them - the WoW economy is considerably more robust than CoH's. Although it's based on short-term auctions rather than consignment, ebil marketers can still have their fun manipulating it.

They also seem to be implementing Pokemon in-game.
The pet battle system actually looks pleasantly diverting for a mini-game. As usual for Blizzard, its simple system yields further challenges as players delve deeper into its mechanics. Thankfully, trial accounts will not be able to access it, and even newbies will find its 100 gold entrance fee a little steep, so there's little chance it will overwhelm the regular game.

Is anyone aware of global channels or hangouts for CoH refugees in the Azeroth universe?
Not that I'm aware of, although that's a bright idea. I'm on the PVPRP server Twisting Nether (US), which is a nice little community that CoHers would probably find congenial.
  4. In case it hasn't been posted here already, the gaming blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun posted an article on "The Fight To Save City of Heroes". They interview the intrepid TonyV on the Titan Networks' drive to save the game and support Paragon Studios.

    Quote:
The official meticulously articulated RPS stance on City of Heroes’ upcoming closure is this face Legions of superpowered super-fans, of course, share that sentiment – whether we’re talking eight-year crime-biffing veterans or recent arrivals from the stagnant shores of normalcy. Out of the blue, NCsoft announced that it was pulling the plug, and many folks started feeling understandably Hulk smashy. But while videogame fandoms have become somewhat notorious for taking what they want by embittered force, the Save City of Heroes movement has managed to stow pitchforks and mob mentalities in favor of fundraisers and 5,000-person in-game rallies. Will that be enough, though? I spoke to campaign coordinator Tony Vazquez about the rather astonishing effort and touched bases with Paragon Studios and NCsoft to see if it’s made an impact.
It's an excellent overview of the various ways the CoH community is coming together to rescue the game. (Its only shortcoming is the reluctance of either NCSoft or Paragon Studios to reveal anything about how their internal negotiations are going.)

In any case, there are one-click buttons to Tweet and Reddit this, so getting out the word is that much easier.

Sure, if one takes the longterm view, e.g. the heat-death of the universe.

Otherwise, Meridian 59 (1996), Ultima Online (1997), and EverQuest* (1999) are just the most notable among long-running MMORPGs. It's a shame that NCSoft decided City of Heroes couldn't stay in their company.

    * Which has a Mac client, albeit only for a frozen-in-time version of the game.

Eh, "Any Mac refugees?" is a misleading subject line if all this thread intends to do is promote another NC Soft title that isn't a native app (such as those for WoW and Eve). Mac users willing to run Windows on Boot Camp have plenty of options otherwise.

Restoring VIP status would be a nice gesture. Many thanks for your character extractor in the meantime.
  10. Thank you for all your work on CoH, War Witch, and particularly on Going Rogue, which was the finest MMORPG expansion that year, for my money. Best of luck with whatever game is fortunate enough to have you working on it.
  11. Thanks for all your splendid work on FX in CoH, Tunnel Rat. It's no exaggeration to say that they're more important here than on pretty much any other MMORPG, and here they shone, so to speak. Good luck with your next artistic adventure.
  12. Many thanks for all your work on CoH, Posi. With everything that you've all learned here, we look forward to seeing what you and the other devs produce in gaming.

So, I'll just limit myself to using sarcasm instead of a tactical nuclear missile...
  14. What a contemptible example of corporate euphemistic boilerplate. That NC Soft announced laying off all of Paragon Studios employees right before Labor Day weekend is just a twist of the knife they already planted right between the shoulder blades.
  15. Thank you, Marcian Tobay, for starting this thread.

I'll update my post later, once I've fully digested the news. While I'd obviously stopped playing CoH regularly, I continued to lurk on the forums to see what was in the works from the devs and what was going on in game, which, oddly enough, is a testament to Paragon Studios and the CoH community.

First off, thank you to everyone for giving my daughters (Jemgirl, Sister Flame and Princess Rose) a wonderful, safe place to play and grow up. This sandbox we call CoX allowed by girls to play make believe with others and taught them it is great to love superheroes.
Thank you for sharing your daughters' experiences with the community. It was simply one of the sweetest ongoing gaming accounts I've read and a testament to how nice the CoH in-game community could be. Good luck with their next games, as well as real life—no doubt they'll put their Paragon City experiences to good use wherever they go.

We'll all be looking forward to it. Thank you in the meantime for all your CoH machinima—your trailers, and the community participation that went with them, generated more anticipation and excitement for the game than even PS's official ones.

Thank you for everything you and the other Titans have done for this game. Hands down, your network is the best fan/community-run resource for an MMO I've had the pleasure of interacting with. Good luck with all your future endeavors.
  20. Since there aren't too many native MMO options for OS X, I've defaulted to WoW. Blizzard has deigned to include a few features it that are reminiscent of CoH, such as transmogrification for character costume customization and AoE looting, but <sigh> it's just not the same.

Nonetheless, WoW has numerous advantages over CoH, not least among them, a corporate parent that isn't likely to leave the game, its devs, and its community high and dry in the name of corporate restructuring. NCSoft has obliterated any consumer confidence I had in it, so WildStar and GW2 are off the table.

Maybe I'll pick up LotRO or AoC once more, but certainly not CO again. I'm intrigued by the browser-based Unity-driven City of Steam, but that's still in alpha (and I'm fairly soured on F2P by this time). Perhaps it's time for something more innovative in MMO space, such as Day Z when it goes pro.

Good luck in the meanwhile to everyone in finding a new virtual world to call home and thanks for the great time here.

That is my bet for the next weeks, but I would love if SF is released tomorrow more than anything because is the powerset I've been wanting since I started playing back in 2006.
Those have good odds, certainly better than Paragon Studios releasing new power sets back to back. I'd lay even better ones for an even later date, though. Beast Mastery needs a few weeks to take advantage of its position as the new shiny before it's replaced.
  23. Congratulations on a nice i-mplementation - that looks very handy.

I was thinking rather that just as the devs took solely negative measures to fix AE (not simply shutting down exploits, but also nerfing XP and rewards) without also implementing positive ones (e.g improving the AE mission interface, making it easier to find particular types of missions or styles of play, working Architect Entertainment better into in-game lore), killing off prominent NPCs without enriching their characters or backstories is a baby-bathwater jettisoning maneuver.

The only team coming to my mind right now that is a group first is the Fantastic Four but when I think of the other groups of heroes they are all soloists who teamed up: JLA, Avengers, etc.
The X-Men and its innumerable spin-offs are probably the best fit for a superheroic MMO environment. (The Fantastic Four are as much a disfunctional family as a team, and the JLA are like the Kiwanis with superpowers.)
