Hi all,
I have finally shifted all my toons (bar one!) over to the light-side and with my last sitting on his Hero alignment mission, it's time to kiss goodbye to the redside on Virtue.
To that end EuroNova is up for auction.
What are you getting?
- SG Registrar has it sitting on 5.15 million prestige.
- 2.2 million prestige available to play with if you don't want to rip everything out and start again.
- SG currently only has 1 member (my last toon) so with more alts, you'd get the 20k/member bonus.
- Three teleporters crafted and installed with beacons available to Mercy, PO, Cap, Sharkhead & Nerva.
- Salvage bins with around 130 bits of common and uncommon salvage.
- Enhancement Storage bins with enhancements in.
Non-Set IOs (quantity@level):
Accuracy: 7@30, 3@20, 1@50, 1@40, 9@25
Healing: 7@30, 6@25, 5@15
Defence Buff: 7@30, 13@25, 1@45
Endurance Reduction: 16@25, 7@30, 7@20, 3@45, 2@50, 1@35
Resistance Buff: 7@25, 2@35, 2@50, 8@30
Damage: 5@35, 6@30, 2@20, 16@25, 1@45, 2@50
Junk: 11 various (fear, immob, etc)
Set IOs
I'm going to try and shift all of these out, but depending on my boredom threshold with sending emails there may be a few left.
Bidding Process:
Post only in this thread. PMs won't be accepted.
Bids are in inf only. Not interested in other SGs on other servers, or blueside on Virtue.
Highest bid at the close of the auction (mid-day GMT 17th May - 1 week from now) wins.
I generally play GMT times, so we would need to arrange a mutually convenient time to transfer ownership. I would also be happy to hang around and invite your alts if you want a solo group.
Any questions - just ask! Bidding starts at 1 inf!

Ho ho ho...
All I can comment on is Fire/Storm and I love it!!
End problems can be cured as already mentioned with Cardiac and some careful +Rec slotting. Cost, however, to make this build truly awesome, is a factor...
I have the Fire epic for more... well... burny fun...
I generally only ever use Hurricane on AV's (or other mobs that are immune to the repel/KB), or on outdoor maps to push the mobs together. Once they are caged, they light up nice and bright and repel easily around.
Cinders, Flashfire & T-Clap for mitigation, FC for movement control, Hurricane & smoke for the to hit debuffs, Freezing rain for flippety floppity fun and -res, and Chance to Hold procs in Char, RoF & Fire Blast for even more choky goodness.
Armour? Who needs it! Anything remotely hostile is either choking, blind, staggering around stunned, falling over, or being tossed around by my lovely pets. The poor BAF prisoners have to run through a world of hurt at my choke point!
I'm just getting started on the Incarnate route with the itrials, and have no clue how ridiculous I will be with Clarion.
Plant might be good though.

Update:
So much has changed!!
I had a couple of PM requests over the years asking for specific build advice, then had a PM today asking to post some up to date builds as these don't work in Mids.
So...
Incarnate!
My main (and badger) is an Emp/Psi, so I have spent a lot on her, and getting through the Incarnate stuff is an ongoing gripe. Some choices detailed below for others to consider, however I have neither the time or inclination to "try out" other trees within each slot. It's bad enough grinding for what I have now!
Alpha
Initially, I wanted more damage from my toon so Musculature was a consideration. But after playing with Mids, I realised I could save a heck of a lot of slots by choosing Spiritual (+Recharge). This was the way I went and am now a few shards short of Spiritual Core Paragon. This has the added advantage of increasing healing & stun duration.
By plugging that into Mids, I now only need two slotted Hasten to make it perma, which is another slot saved!
Judgement
Other than not choosing Void (a PBAoE being of less use than a ranged one) I don't see this as a critical choice. Each of the options has side-benefits, but I wanted a thematic "thunderstorm of mental energy", hence Ion was my choice.
Interface
Again, I'm not overwhelmed by these in play, but wanted more damage out of my toon, so Reactive was my choice. The small amount of -Res is better than nothing and the extra DoT is nice. I did consider Gravitic, but as a soloer, it doesn;t help me kill things quicker, so I didn;t bother. The -Recharge would be a nice stack with the Psi secondary, but these days nothing lasts long enough to matter.
Lore
I went with the Seer, purely for thematic reasons. I have very little experience with this, but will (when I get there) choose the most damaging pet.
Destiny
Clarion, clarion, clarion. It really is amazing and now at T4, it's perma. It's a 120 second Mez protection in an AoE that makes Clear Mind all but useless unless you are exemping. And it buffs you too!!!
This made a significant difference to my playstyle as now, with Regen Aura, Recovery Aura and Clarion, I am very very tough. The Chance to Hold procs in my main attacks, and the hold in Dominate all link up nicely to give me a decent form of control (for soloing anyway!)
So. On to the builds:

Ok. 37% resist to S&L, 27% to Psi, & 16% to Fire & Cold. That's plenty to keep you going if you're running Regen Aura (and have Healing Aura). With Clarion up, you're very very safe.
The +Recharge is ridiculous. Hasten is back in 111 seconds (and that's 2 slotted!), Recovery Aura has a 33 second downtime (a third slot only drops this to 31 seconds - not worth it IMO), Fort is back so fast it looks like a Heal Other, and can be reliably kept on 7 people. Attacks recharge so fast, you can have an attack chain of TK Blast, Will Dom, & Dominate with the occasional Mental Blast & Psi Scream for good measure. Oh. And you can occasionally heal if you like.
Now that Stamina is inherent, the AT is much more capable of running the Leadership toggles, and Assault is a good way of boosting your sub-par damage.
All in all, the Incarnate system has made a huge difference to how this toon plays - and for the better! I can now solo missions at even con with reliable speed, whereas before it was terribly slow and required a tray of Break Frees for emergencies. Judgement for that extra damage spike every so often is also very nice.
Suggested Build (no Incarnate, no expensive stuff)
So if this isn't your main, and you don't want to go into Incarnate & billions of inf territory, this might be for you. I can't imagine playing this with any relish to be honest. I have a Peacebringer, a Brute, a TA/A Defender, an Ice Tank and a Mind Dom all at 50 who already smash the content so hard they don't need Incarnate abilities. It's nice, and all, but it's not required to play the game. My Emp/Psi was terribly underwhelming compared to them, and has received a significant boost from the investment. Anyway...

With 2 LoTG's and a Sleep purple set it's 3 seconds off perma-Hasten, and Fort can be kept on 4-5 reliably. It's not a bad compromise, and will definitely be playable. Another LoTG in Stealth would almost (0.7 seconds) perma-Hasten. It wouldn't be too hard to build for over a 1-50 run, as the occasional lucky recipe drop could probably fund the IOs. Shaving one of the Chance to hold procs and putting the KB resist IO in MoB would improve survivability a little, but as I've found out - playing at 50 with no mez protection is just not fun. As an aside, I haven't checked Decimation recipe costs recently, so I'm now not sure this would be prohibitively expensive.
There's not much room for manoevering in this build, as nearly every slotted power contributes to Recharge in some way. Psi Wail is slotted with Stun to get the 6.25 bonus, and could be switched for simple damage for a less gimpy build
Anyway. If you need more info, just ask away!

Another +1 for increased lag since the patch.
Cracking team last night on a BAF, but we had to kill both AVs twice each before we got them down at the same time. Personally, I was watching my power activation button spin for anything up to 5 seconds before the power activated, then another 3-5 seconds afterwards before I could do anything else.
No more trials for me until this is fixed. It was an exercise in frustration.
-H -
With the +Recharge I have, I can keep Fort on 6-8. I tend to pick those that need it, and anyone who dies usually gets a dose after the Rez (if I can rez before they hit the hospital). I also tend to Fort the main AV tank/brute during AV fights.
AB goes on anyone (league wide) who asks for it, or on anyone who's end use is heavy.
I rarely use HA (certainly don't toggle it like some do), and use Absorb Pain regularly to keep others in the fight. Watching a Tank go from a slither to a full bar is very satisfying. Downside is that when I catch agro, I die. I don't posses Heal Other.
Now that I have Clarion, I don't go near CM.
Have Grant Invis for the Lambda glowy rushes, and usually dish those out to the entire league whilst they are slaying the security guard.
My only issue is that when I blast and don't buff, I get better reward tables. Been experimenting for a while now. It makes me sad.

Emp/Psi here with no Acrobatics. First time visit to the thread, and an interesting similarity to the OP
Interface: Went reactive for more damage as per OP. Psi secondary has nothing to help with killing things quicker, so Reactive all the way.
Judgement: Started out with Void, but switched to Ion for the special effect alone.
Lore: I'm going Seer (currently T2) and it's pretty terrible for +Damage. Reserving judgement until I get the T4
Destiny: Clarion all the way. I get so fed up of being mezzed, and when I'm mezzed, I'm no use. I can do Carnie missions now!!

Heh, I love these open questions... So many people answering differently.
I guess my second question (after what float's your boat?) was more around how you'd answer if someone gave you no information other than "I want to have fun."
I know that depends on their, and your definition of fun, but I rarely see that stop anyone giving their opinion anyway
Being as my last thread got 0 replies and this has now gone to page 2, I may have to draw up a list to see which is "most fun" based on the replies. Some I don't agree with, some I do, but more importantly, some I've never tried, so this could be just the thread to get me trying something new.
Thanks for all the replies!
-H -
Must say I'm surprised to see so many Redside supporters... I find the Rogue Isles very quiet compared to Paragon City.
Myself, I couldn't wait to get my villains blueside. None of them were ever really "villains", more rogues, so GR was a real step forward for me.
After almost 7 years, I appreciate blueside content could do with a refresh, however, I still really enjoy the Faultline story, the Croatoa arcs and (forgive me!) the Hollows story arcs.
Now, all my villains begin in Praetoria, then go blue. Just have one remaining villain emailing all my VG enhancements over bit by bit.
Redside is a bit "gloomy" for me, and the lower level story arcs are painful once you've done them enough times.
Just my opinion!!

After reading responses to my Fire/Dark cor question, I got to thinking.
Some builds are just plain fun. They make you smile, maybe even giggle maniacally.
What floats your boat? One single AT combo to choose above everything in your server list(s).
For me it is my Fire/Storm controller. Damage, control, team support, chaos incarnate and lots and lots of orange numbers... It's truly the combo for blowing off steam for me (at 50).
If someone asked you "what should I play? I want to have fun?" How would you answer?
-H -
Quote:I wouldn't know where to get the slots from, or what to compromise... (Flares...? Nooo!)Have you considered dark mastery for the end recovery and build up feature? This would make nuking easier. Black hole? For real? That said, I do think this is built for success.
Thanks for all the replies, I will take a look at the posted builds and have a think.
-H
P.S. I always start to feel good when people say "You will love this". Last time I had that feeling was with my Fire/Storm (troller) -
Am thinking of remaking my fire based character yet again as a Fire/Dark Cor.
I've never played Dark, so thoughts appreciated. This is a purely paper build at the moment.

- 25% ranged defence combined with the debuffs from DN & FS should make me hard to hit, hence no epic armours?
- +78% accuracy from sets means not much missing, even with Twilight Grasp.
- I like Flares. I know they are bemoaned, but I like 'em
- End looks like it might be a problem.
- Ran out of slots at the end, hence a load of one-slot-dump powers from 41 on. (May switch FoN for CJ and another LoTG)
I've played a Fire/Fire blaster to 50 so am aware of most of the Fire powers, as well as having played a Fire/Storm troller to 50 that has had to be purpled & uniqued and Alpha'd to get the blue bar manageable. That said, Hurricane, plus about +13% def keeps her very safe, so I know the value of those debuffs.
Depending on how this plays (and I did love the damage my Fire/Fire dealt) I may opt for Spiritual or Cardiac alpha slots.
Not looking for a min/max build - just a fun one (hence keeping flares!) and a relatively safe one. I have had a look at +Def builds and it's a definite sacrifice of +Recharge to get a good solid +Def.
Any thoughts? Good, bad indifferent?
-H -
I'm stuck.
I'm thoroughly enjoying (after almost 7 years) a melee toon other than a Brute in my DB/Elec Stalker.
I'm a shade off 35 and so far, my Stalker is pretty much soloing most of the content with ease.
When looking to build set bonuses for IOs I've built for +Recharge, +Recovery and +Defence in the past, but none of these suit my toon who is so far killing everything too quick.
So far, I'm looking to try a +Damage build and can get about +25%. Thinking of finding a spot for Assault for a bit more.
Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions or advice? It's not often I play something that works so well straight out of the box and I'm a bit stuck. Pretty much all the drops I get are crafted and sold, which means money is no real object, though I generally won't waste cash on something that's only going to give me a few % points here & there.
Thanks in advance!

My Fire/Storm was struggling for End with Both +End uniques, as well as +39% from set bonuses.
I never went the route of picking up max END sets at all to be honest, so I can't comment on the benefits, but upon getting to the 3rd tier of the Incarnate tree for End reduction, things have massively improved. This for me, was the single biggest helping hand I got.
For Fire/Storm in particular (may just be me) I've also noticed that stuff dies so fast my insp tray fills up almost faster than I can use it. It's become part of my attack chain to chew them up, which invariably makes things die even faster. Now though, with my Incarnate slot, it's just a thick, creamy gravy.

Quote:As already quoted, this, for me, is the key point.Unfortunately, the Weekly Strike Target brings out the worst of the community - people who are interested in nothing but the reward, have no concern for others feelings and would exploit the hell out of the game in a heartbeat. Only a tiny fraction of the playerbase is like this, but the WST is where they will gravitate.
I've been on a few ITFs this week with snotty teams. Also seen a lot of folks asking to join "non-speed" ITFs perhaps for the same reason. Regular mission teaming and non-WST-TF's are absolutely fine. If you're looking to do WST content, it might be worth being picky about your team. After all - there's a LOT of players running the various TFs.
As an aside, my daughter (11 at the time - now lives on FB) played hidden and with the chat windows off the screen. Call me paranoid, but I don't want to risk that level of abuse for my kids. Ironic really, considering where she spends her time now.

Logitech M705 wireless mouse here with the same problem. It does scroll, but you have to run and run the wheel to get it to zoom out in-game.
To help those with similar issues, disabling "smooth scrolling" in the Logtech software fixes the issue.
All Praise Search.

Am I too late??? If you want something fun, then try a Fire/Storm.
I am hopelessly biased, as evinced by the guide here, but I urge you to read it and swallow the END problems with a brave grin.
It will be the most enjoyable road to 50, and on a team you will be unable to swallow your pride as you save them time and time again from misadventure. You have -kb with Fire Cages which grab the most inordinate amount of agro, but with Hot Feet you will just.... burn stuff.... Epic fireballs... Consume... *sigh*.... I'm not sure you could have much more fun with your clothes on to be honest. However the road to Phenomenal Cosmic Power (TM) is painful. Very painful. Even with Incarnate abilities, I still flatten my end bar. Blues are your friend, as is the Inspiration Combination tool thingy. Debt... Well... You'll have a relationship over the first 30 levels.
And as a special offer just to you, if you decide to try it and get the toon to 37, I will send you a crafted Miracle +Recovery IO to help with your woes (if you want one). Apologies if this is a worthless offer, I have no clue of the value of the IO. Also, it has to be 37, because all I've got hoarded are 40's.
If you're up for it though, drop me a PM with your toon name and server and I'll admire your bravery as I hand it over!
Unless you're too scared?

Quote:Good for you and welcome to the Defender forumsI just chose an Empath as my new defender. I really don't want to think of him as a pure healer.
I'd like to think I can help the team out of tight situations. I'd like to think I can still do moderate damage, while giving my team an edge in hitting, and causing damage. I think that's what an Empath can do and to label any single AT in a pigeon hole is just wrong.
A tank CAN and does absorb damage right? But they can damage back, they can also show signs of soft control.
This is an example of why these kinds of threads turn people off of an AT..... you GOTTA play what you LOVE. Then if you MUST, classify the bejesus out of it. But at the end of the day... who gives a rats hairy **** what you're classified as? Have fun. Kill stuff. Heal stuff. Get XP... repeat.
Quote:One of the things I find ever so amusing about this whole ... um ... debate is it's phrased as if having good support and healing capabilities are somehow mutually exclusive with the role of a blasting offender.*
The only limit on one vs the other is the Player at the keyboard.
My Empath was built many moons ago as a support toon with 6-slotted Hasten! Since then I've had many revisions of the build and am so in a love/hate relationship with the limp-lettuce damage.
Empathy is a poor set unless you invest a LOT of money in -Recharge. The reason being that to become an adept buffer (and more than just a "Healer") you need to get those stonking recharge timers down on AB, Fort and the two Auras.
Currently, with I-don't-know-how-much money spent on IO's, and the Incarnate Spiritual powers, I have a 26 second downtime on the Auras, perma AB (14 seconds to spare), and Fort on a full team of 7 (can't do yourself) if I spend the 16 seconds in-between it recharging to blast/CM/heal. I can't manage that, so I tend to make sure Fort is on those that need it (maxing at about 4-5 toons) so that I can actually spend some time blasting.
With Chance to Hold procs in all my blasts, and the epic sleep and hold, I can almost become a mini-controller. And don't tell anyone else, but I chose AP over HO. Why? You're unlikely to be pulling aggro if you need to use a single target heal, so AP is more bang for your buck. If a team is in the mucky brown stuff when you've got both aura's running and Fort on the main players, your own health is the last thing to worry about. That's just me though, and I never tell anyone.
Oh..
Oops...

Ilya is my oldest non-50 (Illusion/FF troller) with all the anniversary badges and currently sitting at 44.
Still like to give the not so vet "VOID!" screamers a scare occasionally!

Hah. Great post!
- The Atlas Park fanfare. Every time I go to Atlas it brings up memories of my first character entering the game.
- Dinging 50 for the first time and heading all the way back to Atlas to level up.
- The Hollows "TP to Atlas Gate" duty. Where have all the taxi-bot PCs gone?
- Discovering I could slot more than one enhancement of the same type in a power. Being amazed by being able to 6 slot Hasten!
- Perez streetsweeping teams.
- Getting excited by Hover, then blown away by Flight.
- Respec trials when people could fail them.
- Being given 1 million inf by a cash rich 50. When it meant something!

There is a guide here that explains about getting CoX to work in Ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu on an old Laptop and put CoX on as detailed in that guide. Looks like I was fortunate enough to be able to connect to my wireless without the hassle you've experienced. I thought it was a breeze compared to XP!
Anyway, my problem is that it's an old 1.6Ghz 1Gb RAM, 16Mb graphics card so CoX runs like a disabled dog on that...
However I've now got Ubuntu 10.4 on a dual boot system on my desktop so I may give it a go. If you read that guide, Leandro does mention that there's a problem with the costume creator (that's fixable) if you have an Nvidia card. Don't know how easy it is though as I've not got round to doing it myself yet.

Just a quick thankyou for this guide and to re-iterate problems I had...
I cheated and took a pen drive of my Windows CoH folder and dropped it into .wine/c_drive/Program Files and had all sorts of permissions errors trying to get cohupdater to run. chmod didn't work although I'm not 100% sure I was doing it right.
In the end I made a Games directory under /home/username and dropped it in there.
- renamed the folder to backup
- ran the updater and changed the default location to /home/username/Games.
- Let it install for a second or two, then quit the installer
- Delete the contents of the newly created City Of Heroes folder in Games, and moved the contents of backup into City Of Heroes
- ran the updater.
It did a Checksum, then it hung. I quit, re-ran the updater and on the second attempt, the game loaded fine. Then crashed as I went straight to the tailor with the logged on toonNeed to digest Leandro's post above probably...
Not sure if any of these will help anyone else. I'm just getting started with Linux so this is all a bit new.
PS. This guide was tough to find...! Ended up getting here through Google-fu rather than the Guide to Guides. It must be buried somewhere!

Picking up 66 months in March. Always played on the US servers. Did consider moving over when they offered, but I had too many friends and a good SG on Virtue.
Seems a lot quieter nowadays (during GMT playtimes anyway) but am still enjoying the game.
Main badger still has badges to get (on an Emp/Psi that's challenge enough for me solo). Standing at 607ish at the moment.
Never done Hami. Ever.
Took me until summer last year to get my first villain 50!
Still got Dr Quarterfield to do
That's me!

Well I don't get on here much these days, but my main is sat in between Midnighter and Cimeroran with a sliver left on both and 598 badges pretty. Should hit 600 this weekend.
Out of interest, I ran the settitle bind into City Info Tracker to see how 600 looked, and was surprised to see me in the top 100 for Defenders across all the servers.
I imagined that Emp/Psi was one of the harder toons to hunt badges with as Psi doesn't have a damage helping secondary, and was pretty much stunned to see 8 or 9 Empaths above me in the list. Especially an Emp/Psi with 669 badges!
Pretty much solo'd my way through all of these, relying on PUG's and Virtue Badges to get the team required ones. Even Empath is still a way off!
Thanks to all the folks in this forum who've taken the time to collate hints and tips for getting some of the more difficult badges. Especially the Oroborus lists and Invention ones. It always helps when someone has written down a logical way to go about things.
Now all I need to do is get the rest. Slowly but surely I will manage it. If another Emp/Psi can get 669 badges, then so can I!
Thanks.

Quote:This sums things up for me. However - replace AP with HOIf your build is tight, AP is droppable.
It's useful, don't get me wrong. I've pulled some behinds out of some very nasty fires with it. But I really don't use it often at all. and go missions at a time without ever touching it. If you've got fort and AB slotted up for recharge, and know how to place them for mitigation, and are using your RAs when they're up, you should very rarely find yourself in a spot where HO isn't cutting it.. I only have room for one of them in my build, so I opted for AP. On general teams, with Fort, AB & Aura's, I hardly ever need the heals. When I do need heals, AP packs a much bigger wallop, and with the global recharge I'm running, it's back quick. The low END cost (on a Stamina-less Emp) is also good news.
As to the downside. Regen Aura means I'm not dead in the water, and being a low agro magnet helps. If I'm having to heal, then I'm not the target.

Quote:63 months in December for me...
i have 3 question! what toons have you been playing for all this time? have you played one from when you started till now? whats your favourite build?
I don't play that much at all any more. A few hours a week is the best I can manage with RL, so levelling up alts is a dreadfully slow process.
1st toon was an En/En blaster and I remember religiously slotting TO's in powers not realising I could slot more than one of the same type. So that was one KB TO in each blast which was amusing running round the Perez Park maze on PUG's. I remember picking up two or three levels in that park maze on my first ever team, and being amazed at how fast the XP was rolling in. Fun times! Toon deleted at 14 after I got flight I think.
2nd toon was an Emp/Psi defender created around an old Champions NPC I used to play as a team filler for my weekly tabletop RPG sessions. I think I hit 50 about 12 months after that. This toon is the one I spend most of my time on now. She's my badger (having all the anniversary badges) and being Emp/Psi, it's quite challenging to get the badges solo. She also has had a fortune spent on her for IO's. Currently picking up day job badges which is one benefit to not playing!
Other toons I'm still playing of note, would be my Ice/Ice tank and Ill/FF controller. Tank is 45 and the troller is 41. They both have the 2nd anniversary badges and have been played on and off for the whole time. I think the Ill/FF troller is now an exercise in pain to be honest and I'm determined to take it to 50 just to prove I have the staying power. Not the most solo friendly toon I have!
My favourite build is without doubt my Fire/Storm controller. Ticks all the boxes. 10/10 for fun, damage, control, team defence, soloability and all-out "save the team from certain death". Hoovers up Banished Pantheon like a Dyson to help fund IO's for other builds.
Interesting to read other vet's thoughts in this thread.
Cheers!
