CoH and Linux?
Hey guys,
Im considering an upgrade from windows XP to the latest desktop version of linux ubuntu. Are there any problems running CoH in ubuntu? Im not the most tech savvy person out there so will .exe files still run the same? Also speed wise is there likely to be any effects? (like vistas slowdown for instance) |
* Linux will not natively run ANY application designed for Windows. To run games you'd have to run them via a process called WINE, or pay for Cedega to basically do the same (they run a derivative of WINE which is configured for many games). Ditto for any other application you use currently, if there is not a Linux version of it chances are you'll have to either use a Linux substitute or try running it via WINE.
Personally if I were you I'd try it before committing. Any Linux distrib will come as a Live CD which lets you boot into it from the CD and try it before installing. I've found Linux Mint better than Ubuntu in terms of hardware support. Mint is based on Ubuntu but with more hardware and codex support.
I run a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Mint, Win7 for games etc, Mint for code and work stuff.
I was thinking if WINE didnt support CoH I would also run a dual support version of ubuntu and xp for the time being until I can figure something out, however I heard somewhere that running dual support slows your computer down, is this true?
I already installed the demo version from CD and I quite like it but as i said above im new to all of this so I dont really have much idea what Im doing besides dumb luck
Im already having issues trying to get drivers for my netgear wg511v2 adapter, but im hoping WINE will install the windows version.

Dual boot doesn't affect runtime speeds at all (assuming you've got it done right in terms of swap space partitions etc).
To get your Wireless working can be a bit of a pain in Ubuntu, this might help. There's a post in the second page with step-by-step instructions. Basically you don't rely on WINE, instead you use the ndiswrapper to wrap the Windows Drivers for the card so Linux can use them if there aren't any native drivers available.
I'd recommend test-driving Mint as well though and seeing if that comes bundled with a native driver.
Does mint come with the compiz fusion thingy though?
Thats the main reason Im after linux Thanks for the linky, i heard about the ndiswrapper thingy but wasnt 100% sure where to input it lol the link helps though. I have the drivers already installed in XP and I have the original .exe drivers file downloaded as well, netgear site says it should work in linux but you know how manufacturers like to lie
There is a guide here that explains about getting CoX to work in Ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu on an old Laptop and put CoX on as detailed in that guide. Looks like I was fortunate enough to be able to connect to my wireless without the hassle you've experienced. I thought it was a breeze compared to XP!
Anyway, my problem is that it's an old 1.6Ghz 1Gb RAM, 16Mb graphics card so CoX runs like a disabled dog on that...
However I've now got Ubuntu 10.4 on a dual boot system on my desktop so I may give it a go. If you read that guide, Leandro does mention that there's a problem with the costume creator (that's fixable) if you have an Nvidia card. Don't know how easy it is though as I've not got round to doing it myself yet.

I run COH on Ubuntu using Wine for about 3 years.
I'm in dual boot and it doesn't slow down computer.
The problem that you may encounter is with wideo driver versus COH. For example, I have an Nvidia with the latest drivers (now Nvidia produce native linux drivers) but COH don't recognize them and disable the advance graphic mode.
Like Carnifax said, the best will be to try some distros (Ubuntu, Mint, Mandriva, etc...) and choose the one that suites you well.
Level 50 ice/ice/ice blaster
Well all i can do is try it i guess, im currently making a cd for linux mint 8 right now. If all else fails I still have my windows xp disk anyway.
Can't get my blasted mobile broadband working on it though. Wretched thing,
Mobile broadband is a waste of time anyway, particularly the huewei modems (probably spelled wrong )
I can use a cabled connection until i get stuff sorted but so far the windows drivers seem to be out to annoy me even with wine

When it's free anyway and your Cable Network has fallen over all weekend Mobile Broadband is certainly not a waste of time

Been running it all weekend and it's perfectly fine even playing CoH (from Europe).

Remember, Transgaming are also the guys the run the CoH Macintosh Client, so Cedega support is as close to "official" support you are going to get right now.
Also, take a really good look at some of the pictures in this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=219534
Quite a few weren't taken under Windows or OSX.
Thanks guys, just one more question....
Im trying to install the nvidia drivers for my 3d card now which i downloaded off the nvidia site.
After struggling for several hours I finally managed to figure out how to get into boot mode 3 and run the file however i get the error message:
Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> License accepted. -> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes) -> No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site; this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for your kernel. -> Performing CC sanity check with CC="cc". -> Performing CC version check with CC="cc". -> Kernel source path: '/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/build' -> Kernel output path: '/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/build' ERROR: If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure you either have configured kernel sources matching your kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed on your system. If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel installed on your system. If you specified a separate output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option. Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option. ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. |

Also posted on NVidia forums to see if anyone can help there either. Please also keep in mind ive only been using linux for a total of one day, so my knowledge is very very limited

Which Linux did you install?
If you installed a Debian based Linux, such as Mepis 8.0 or 8.5, you can utilize the SMXI script to install the latest Nvidia drivers: http://smxi.org/ :: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Smxi
***
You will also need to already have obtained your kernel headers for your distribution. Debian style headers can normally be found in your package manager by searching for:
linux-headers
Depending on your distribution, you may also be prompted to go ahead and download a gcc package when you attempt to install your kernel headers:
***
also, the quickest way to get to run level 3 is this.
Go ahead and boot to the desktop. Open up a terminal.
Type in the command: su
Hit Enter:
Input your root password:
You should now be logged in as root.
Type the command: telinit 3
This should drop you to run-level 3, and you'll need to login as root again.
If you have already installed the SMXI package, just type the command: sgfxi
Then follow the on-screen prompts.
I installed Linux Mint 8 Helena.
I tried the 'telinit 3' command first but i still got the message regarding server x. So i found a forum post telling me to type 'sudo /etc/gdm stop' which worked and then i got the kernel issue mentioned above.
Il try the kernel headers thingy you screenshotted though thanks the only issue I can see if thats all i need is which ones do i install? I dont have an 'all' one like you i just have a buttload of generic numbers lol

You need at least the header for your installed kernel. That would be kernel 2.6.31 by default. So you want to download the 2.6.31 header files.
okay. I installed Mint 8 in Virtual Box. According to Synaptic, linux-headers-2.6.31-14 are installed by default. You might also want to install linux-headers-2.6.31-14-386.
Now, to get your Nvidia driver. The SMXI script from the Mepis wiki works in under Mint.
So: here's what you should do:
Open up a terminal.
Type in the command: su
enter your root password (in Mint it should be the same as your user password by default).
hit enter
right click in the terminal window:
paste this command line: cd /usr/local/bin && wget -Nc smxi.org/sgfxi && chmod +x sgfxi
Hit Enter on the keyboard.
SMXI should download and install.
On the keyboard: hit the keys: Control Alt F1
This should drop you to the command prompt.
Login with root.
Type in the command: sgfxi
Then hit enter.
The SMXI script should take care of everything from there.
If you need anything else, SMXI should tell you what other files to go get.
Ok after doing that I had a bit of a massive problem lol.
I couldnt see my screen in init 5 anymore, the screen went black as though it was turned off, which Im guessing points to the driver being the wrong one for nvidia card.
I finally found out the command to uninstall the nvidia driver from my other computer and that worked, but now im back to square one.
The install file for the driver I downloaded myself still comes up with the same error despite the kernel upgrades.
Any other suggestions?

Have you tried going into Hardware in the Control Panel (or whatever they call it) and clicking on that? That's how I got my driver installed, and my card is a weird one (8400M GT). Much easier than trying to compile things and update kernels.
Basically I used Hardware Drivers here. Got two listed, the newer, recommended one didn't work well, did all sorts of funky graphics glitches, so I reinstalled (it was quicker than messing around uninstalling things) and went with the older version.

Dont worry about it, once its fixed it will be good
The hardware drivers thing also gets the same result, black screen. I did this the first time I installed mint and wasnt sure how to remove it so i ended up reinstalling the entire system lol.
I just found something on packages called 'NVidia-185-Kernel-Source' with a few versions, going to try that.

Which driver did you use on that first attempt? The 18x (think it was 185) was the one that caused me problems, so I reverted to a 17x version. And what sort of card do you have?
I have a NVidia geforce4 420Go, its in the old legacy line I think.
Yes it sucks I know but not as much as no card at all
185.18.36 is the version the software updater shows. The hardware driver just says version 96.
I installed the one from software updater, and restarted but theres no difference. Since I forcibly uninstalled the old driver from terminal when I was getting black screen I get an error box when I start the comp now. The comp is still looking for the old NVidia drivers, anyway to stop that as well?
Also one thing i did find weird, I cant find any Xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11/ directory, however I read mint 8 doesnt use one by default. Could this affect the drivers?
Ignore about the xorg.conf, i have it now it just installed with the software update
Also anyone happen to know the command to boot in low graphics mode? just in case anything i do blacks out my screen again id like to be able to get onto it ^^
