Why would someone want to pay you money for their advertising to NOT reach its intended audience?

(of course as a player I really APPRECIATE that feature, but you get my point)
The ability to switch off in-game ads is critical to keeping me (at the very least) playing the game. As it is ON by default and most consumers / players are complacent, and can't be bothered turning them off (very, very, very low numbers turned them off according to Brian Clayton when I spoke to him a couple of years ago), I don't think the opt-out option is a negative for the in-game ads scheme.

Your other point about getting ads for products we (as gamers) might actually use is far more valid. They were on the right track with gadget and movie ads, but the shoes....um, way wrong.

    Is IS aesthetic, right?
    Because...Praetorian Clockwork is PEOPLE!!!!!

I've said it a million times, eventually my ranting will overcome Tyrant's propaganda.

  4. Of all the threads about rep this one has been the most informative. Even though I'm in the lolRep camp with Westley, it still has some uses. People have even said nice things about me in the comments, go figure!
  5. Sorry to hear you're experiencing technical difficulties. To answer your question, as far as I'm aware, there is no precedent for NCSoft to give refunds or free time due to issues like this. They do however have a technical support team available through a number of avenues to help you work through the problem.
  6. My favourite has to be the GunScanner, currently on the Live servers. Combining Fly + Dual Pistols + Radio Contact click = GunScanner!

  7. This is excellent stuff Leandro, do you know if there's a similar type of thing with the in-game lore? Or is that your next project for a rainy day?

    In Game Ad?

I was one of the players who threw a 'fit' over in-game ads (but found any screenies on the forums informative on the topic). Yes, we've had in-game ads, past-tense, and I was reliably informed a couple of years ago that they weren't the roaring success Paragon Studios / NCSoft had hoped for. What you've pictured isn't a real-world burger ad, it's a stock image, one of many that are cycled through, usually when zoning. I guess when you adjusted your graphic settings that also caused the image to reload with a different ad.

For the record, I find the Paragon City / Rogue Isles based ads (for Arachnos or Red Beast as examples) witty, immersive and a benefit to the game. Real-world ads I find immersion-breaking and as a matter of principle I will not pay to be advertised to. My opinion was terribly in the minority, but it's still the opinion I hold to.

Luckily for me and those with similar opinions in-game ads can be turned off under Options, so if the scheme ever gains another advertiser, I won't be seeing it.
  9. I've extended an open invitation for any of the Devs to come visit me in New Zealand, as yet none have taken me up on the offer. Maybe after Going Rogue.
  10. Welcome Black Scorpion, and gratz on your level-pact with Dr. Aeon. I think 'good cop / bad cop' is an interesting simile, but wouldn't Villain / Lackey be more appropriate? And that raises the question of who is who.

    *stands clear*

    Now...fight!
  11. Welcome Black Scorpion! Gratz on your redname status. Always nice to know that people are working on the MA, it's an excellent feature.
  12. Welcome Black Pebble!

It's great to see a marketing representative for the game getting a presence on the forums. A direct line of communication between the players and those responsible for letting the world know about the game we love has been opened. Let the citizens rejoice!

As far as marketing for the game goes my views on how to get the word out there better have been pretty much covered by earlier posters. My predominant hot-button issues, old and new, that relate to your role would be in-game advertising and lack of Going Rogue boxed sets on shop shelves outside the US. I dislike both, strongly. I do however love seeing CoH/CoV stuff on Big Bang Theory, so I'd give whole-hearted backing to more of this sort of thing. Increased product placement and advertising aimed at the general populace to attract new subscribers.

You've taken a bold step by taking a more public role here on the forums, but it's a move that will only improve the quality of feedback you're able to gather and so improve the game itself. That's got to be a good thing.

You're right on both counts War Witch, they're not the answers I wanted to hear, but it is progress! To have at hand an official summary of the business factors behind the decision should help us all better understand why NCSoft and Paragon Studios choose this model of distribution. Without this information we would all be going around in circles working ourselves up into a frenzy (or even bigger one at least) based on speculation and rumour.

Now we know why, we can set to rest the rumours of the EU being shut down and many other perfectly sensible (as much as they were emotional) responses we've had as consumers.

If I'm right your response could be summarised by those three dirty little words that no customer likes to hear, but have grown accustomed to, it's just not economically viable.

I can live with that, and hope the EU forumites can too, after all, we wouldn't want bad business decisions to result in our favourite game going down the chute.

War Witch, thanks very much for taking the time and putting in the effort to get what essentially counts as the closest anybody can come to a "straight answer" from Marketing. Even if I don't like that answer, I do like the professionalism, determination and forthrightness you've shown in getting it to us. For that reason, I'll suck it up and live with it.

    Thanks again.

P.S. I was off at PAX East this weekend in Boston so apologies for not being around to say hello. I'll be posting about that in a few minutes. I have to get my wordiness on.
Good to hear War Witch! The information that came out of PAX East was very interesting and has given us all a lot to long for out of Going Rogue. I have taken the Pre-order offer (as a boxed set is currently out of reach for me) and have been running around on my Dual Pistols Blaster for a while now, much fun.

I (and the others in this thread) are obviously dead-keen to see what your inquiries with the powers that be uncover, so I'll keep watching this space.
  15. Yes, the informal chat with War Witch has been entertaining, but I think we're all still here for answers to the original questions. So, hopefully they weren't hoping that 'beads' would distract us, no matter how shiny. We'll see.
  16. It's good news that War Witch is on the case in tracking down 'the official story' regarding Going Rogue's distribution decision-making. If that results in a detailed explanation of the reasoning behind the decision not to have a boxed set outside the US, then I will be informed. If her endeavours result in a reversal of that decision, then I will be happy. NCSoft and Paragon Studios want happy customers, right?
  17. Congratulations David! Your artwork is spectacular, you deserve any recognition you get for it, and if that's in the form of a promotion, fantastic! Keep up the good work.
  18. Awesome! Nice job Paragon Studios! I knew this game was the best, but recognition's always good.
  19. Ghouls - If you question Tyrant and have no worth to him, you become a Ghoul. I'd not be surprised if non-supers (who end up as Praetorian Clockwork or in the PPD depending on their loyalty) get tortured, brain-wiped, then dumped into the Dim where they can at least be of some use to the Emporer in harassing Calvin Scott's Resistance.

    That's my view.
  20. Your walls of text and your situation inspired me Sam, what can I say. I'll let you guys get back to rationally debating the power balancing issues of Dual Pistols.

**runs off gun-fingers blazing** Bang...Pow...Pow...Bang Bang!!
  21. Context II

    The unfortunate fate of
    misleading generalisation
    ALL of my deaths
    castrate the biggest actual threats
    horribly gimped
far too long just dicking around
    that really bites
one good punch to the face
    hits SO DAMN HARD
    surprisingly, not bad
I can't say "good," but decent
It's not nearly as bad as it was
    while I fart

The point, dear reader, for those unaware, is to highlight to the fact, that where there are words, there is air. For none of us, myself included, can possibly hope, without being deluded, that our words will not at some point be misconstrued, if we do we are surely like the Emporer, nude. Please take no more from this, nor no less, than that we are all together in this lingual mess. Clarity, brevity, debate and denial, curt accussations and fervent denial. Without this cauldron within which to brew, our species would not be as it is for me, or for you.

tl;dr version: Words are as slippery as oiled eels, they can appear to say anything, the key to unlocking their meaning is context.

  24. Hi! It's great to see the legions of bug squashers expanding...now about that GunScanner...
  25. Gratz on the offer you can't refuse! I hope all goes well with it. Thanks for all your time and effort herding cats here on the forums and all your great work with Hero Con, competitions, and everything else.
