I believe you're referring to Positional Tags and also Delivery Tags (see Defense Tags and Stacking). This article from Paragonwiki explains it better than I http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Defense

Is a battle axe/shield defense brute "off the table"? I have one, and it's fun to play. Just curious, because I find that /shield and /sr have alot in common.

I've wanted a better gun option for years. The "assault rifle" just doesn't give me enough "DAKKA".
I was fortunate enough to get an assault cannon temp power during one of the Praetoria story arcs. Damn I hated to see it go. -
