Quote:I would not recommend going back to any of the drivers from before 9.7. We found a problem last year in the ATI drivers which they fixed in the 9.7 drivers. Remember that we've reworked a lot of the plumbing of graphics engine of the game to try and take advantage of newer features to improve performance on many recent (within the last 5 years or so) video cards and older drivers which may have worked fine before I17 will not be acceptable with I17.On the reporting/bugged thing, maybe, I'm not sure. I'm going to install 10.4 later today. I'll try it out, see how it goes, if this still happens... I'll install the Older drivers I had, which had been working -peeerfectly- up until I changed. which was 8.12... A lot of people ran 8.9 or 8.12 because of how solid these were and how WELL they worked with City of Heroes.
The Latest drivers arent always the best, and ATI has proven this fact, by bringing out later, but horribly faulty drivers in the past. However, Over the weekend, I'll try the 10.4... and then the 8.12 if the 10.4 don't work to well. We'll see how it goes from there.
You may be right on the Driver issue, but we'll have to see what happens. -
There are lots of threads here in the forums regarding this issue. The main culprit appears to be an ATI Hotkey poller service which needs to be disabled. Other people have found that increasing the priority of ventrillo/skype/teamspeak helps. Still other people have found that their anti-virus software was incorrectly detecting CityOfHeroes.exe as infected.
Please check the other forum threads. -
Make sure that you choose "Integrated/Motherboard" in the middle column (not Radeon)
-
atioglxx.dll is ATI's OpenGL driver.
If you have not done so, please update your video card drivers.

So, you are still running the 10.1 Catalyst drivers, right? And what video card are you using (apologies if you've posted it and I've missed it)?
EDIT: found your video card info in another message: ATI HD 4870 1 Gig GDDR5
Video drivers can be the cause of memory leaks. We have seen memory leaks with ATI drivers in the past. I understand that you are hesitant to upgrade to the 10.4 drivers, but understand that we can't make the game work around all of the problems in each driver version and mainly try to support the latest drivers. We do occasionally find work arounds for problems in drivers, but not always.
There are only a few issues that I know of with the 10.4 drivers and those issues are also present in the 10.1 drivers. Have the people reporting problems with the 10.4 drivers /bugged them or reported them here in the forums? -
And we worked so hard on that hating SLI feature
Did you try the '-slifbos 2' feature? -
You still have not provided us with hard numbers on the leak rate. After 5 minutes of playing, what is the memory/Virtual Memory size. What about after 10 minutes? After 15 minutes? etc.
Also, how much memory is in your system? -
Quote:I don't know. You haven't told me what driver version you are using. I understand that your video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT. The driver version is also very important.EDIT: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Is there an issue with this driver? D:
If you have not updated your video card drivers in the past few months, I would recommend updating them. You should be able to get the latest from www.nvidia.com -
SugarCrazeify, what video driver version are you using for you 8800?
-
FYI: We are seeing lots of crash reports with that driver version. Definitely update your drivers to either the 10.1 or 10.4 drivers.
-
Have you tried running with the latest NVidia drivers?
-
How are you determining the memory leak rate? Are you looking at the task manager "Mem Usage" column? If so, can you go to View->Select Columns and enable "Virtual Memory Size" and see if that also grows?
Also, have you tried the 10.4 drivers? -
There are many things which can impact the performance of the game, both inside the game and outside of the game. In the game, try reducing the graphics settings and also try running with the game's safe mode (checkbox at the user agreement window).
Outside of the game, make sure you system is running optimally (hard-drive is defragged, all unnecessary services and programs are shut down, etc). -
If you having graphical issues (not being able to see your character at the login screen for example) and you've already updated to the latest drivers, then you might want to also try the game's safe mode (checkbox at the user agreement screen).

Quote:I believe stencil shadows have been disabled when running with ATI drivers due to a memory leak in the ATI drivers. These settings will have to be updated since the release of issue 17.
Card: Visiontek ATI Radeon x1550 PCI Card (Note: PCI) Drivers Latest as of this date: 10.2 legacy, OS: XP, 3.2 ghz, supports 3.0 shaders.
The problems for me with the new graphics in issue 17 is of course the shaders.
With the new shader settings defaulting to shadow stencil for me I have lost all shading in the game.
I am referring to the daytime and nightime lighting where the shadows of the trees, building, etc move across the ground as the sun and moon set and rise. Object shading.
I have tried changing the new settings to shadow maps and the lowest setting allowed and the lag is so bad it is unplayable. It enables that type of shading and more but runs poorly on my system. Unplayable.
One thing in that setting there is more shading that I notice now. For instance, the tram car rails now show as moving shadows on the ground and the substation towers also show shadows on the ground.
But I can only use the shadow stencil.
With this in mind I of course do not like the newer graphic engine changes for that very reason of losing my object shading. Unless it can be adjusted somehow.
It is a shame we can not go back to the older graphics set-up if we wanted.
I will check and see if the latest 10.4 drivers also have this memory leak. If not, we should be able to re-enable the stencil shadows for ATI drivers. -
Quote:Do you have vsync enabled? This forces the GPU to wait for the end of the frame to be shown before showing the next frame to eliminate tearing. But, this can cause the GPU to idle while waiting for the vsync.Hey! I just got my new computer upgrade and have been playing around with graphics settings ALL day. phew, i'm getting tired. Anyways this is what I've got.
Intel Core-i7 920
6GB Corsair 1333mhz ddr3
Asus P6T X58
XFX Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition
1TB WD Caviar Black Hard Drive
850W PW
Windows 7 Professional
Catalyst 10.4
Anyways, I've been tinkering with setting all day like I said. I was having some serious problems with FSAA of any sort in the game. I have the settings in Ultra mode and everything turned up to the Maximum Settings. After a bunch of research I figured out that in order to use FSAA all I had to do was disable "Advanced Occlusion Settings" I cranked up FSAA to 8x and all was good.
Oh, yeah, running it 1920x1080 on my 50" plasma via hdmi port.
Anyways, I've got a quick question about frame rates. With my setup and the in game settings, i'm only getting around 30-40fps. Peaks at around 50, low is around 22. Anyways, I thought that was kinda low for what I'm running.
My nifty little program called techpower up gpu-z, reports to me in the log that I am only using 65-70% of my gpu cycles and only 20% of the CPU. Now don't get me wrong, but with those numbers wouldn't you think the fps could go higher?
I almost think that the FPS meter is lying to me. because when I am thick into some graphics and I drop below 30 fps, I don't notice the change. usually when frames start falling bellow 30 and closer to 20 I can definitely start seeing frames skipping, but in this case I don't. It's smooth as can be at 22fps. hmm...
What do yas think? -
UBOs (Unidentified Black Objects)?
Could each of you who are seeing this problem post your video card and driver versions? -
With vsync enabled, the GPU will wait for the end of the vertical sync to swap buffers (so you don't get tearing) and this can caus the GPU to go idle.
Also, if the CPU is not feeding the GPU data fast enough (or feeding it too much data which is taking too long to get to the GPU), then the GPU could be idle while waiting for more data to process.
You did not mention what resolution you were running at which makes a huge difference.
Also, other applications running on your machine can compete for resources (CPU/memory/disk access/network access/GPU) which can cause the game to not run optimally.
I think you should get some benchmarking tools and compare them to other people's results which similar hardware. Remember that CoX is an OpenGL based game. So doing DirectX benchmarks may not necessarily translate to OpenGL performance. -
Also try the game's safe mode (check box at the user agreement window).
-
For those of you that are seeing this memory leak, what kind of video card are you running and with what driver version and how fast is the game leaking memory? How many KB or MB per minute?
And also, does turning all of the graphics options down clear up the memory leak? If you are so inclined, is there a specific graphics option or options which, when turned on, the memory leak is evident (or more evident)? -
What OS, video card, and video card drivers are you using?

To be clear, the new Ultra Mode graphics features are not required to play the game. But, enhancements were made to the graphics engine to improve performance for lower-end hardware. These enhancements may need newer drivers to address problems which may exist in older drivers.
