  1. Squee! That was a true throwback for me....I own all the Fleischer cartoon serials coutesty of the tinned box set of all the Superman movies a few years back (if you can get it, grab it...it also includes the short-lived NBC series and a few other goodies) and thought this was just a lovely harkening back to the great old cartoons.

An especially nice touch with John Newton's voice acting. I saw the name and went 'hang on, I know that name....' and lo and behold, it was him. Great stuff.

  2. Great first issue, Troy. I've got it on my pull list and there were additional copies on shelves at my local down here (and they weren't waterlogged, burnt or windswept, even!)...I do have to say though...

Ape Pagoda. Noone under the age of thirty is gonna even get that gag if it's referencing the tv show I think it is. And if it's not, then I'm making some mad connections in my brain meats. It's my fault if I have....I did skim the issue initially with pants on.

But I think the subject matter is cool, and the one-page one-offs are just totally cool and reminds me of my childhood. One pants down for me.

  4. Wow. What aren't I grateful for this week?

Cyclone Yasi not claiming a single life in its ferocity and changing course at the very last minute to avoid a major city in Australia's north and sparing it destructive winds of nearly 200 miles an hour?

The fact that even when it got so far inland it fizzled out to just a tropical depression right on top of a country city where a friend of mine lives?

That's two things for sure...I'm also grateful for the courageous hearts and minds of the Egyptian people in standing up for their freedom.

Maybe a little heavy going for such a thread, but we Aussies have been through it this last six months.

  5. My first hero to do it, a certain Green Taipan (who is more of a mix of Spider-Man and Nightwing than anything) has his item being his own genetics. Being a mutant who was first mutated when bitten by an Australian Taipan snake (one of the world's most venomous), he had to have his powers stabilised by....dum-dum-DUmmmmmm...

    TREATMENT X! /echo

...which also gave him some reptilian facial characteristics. Now that he's been exposed to the Well's strange energies, he's mutating...again. His reptile features are gone and he's becoming...well, heck, I dunno....

  6. Fortunately, I am totally out of the zone where the cyclone struck and don't have to worry, though I was making do a little while ago (only two weeks, it feels like forever) when my home city here of Brisbane flooded.

Living on an island continent where we get cylones on our west, north and east coasts, I can assure you we're more than familiar with this routine. It's just that this one was unprecedented.

Now it's become a massive tropical depression which is raining all the way into the middle of the country. Some of you may've seen the Oprah thing where she visited Uluru? That local area is going to be flooded....

  7. Just to update everyone...

The cyclone made landfall at about midnight last night Australian time and literally in the last hour it shifted south and went between two major towns, sparing the larger from damage. However, there's been horrendous damage to the banana plantations (my state provides the majority of the country with banana crops and is a several hundred million dollar a year industry) and to the sugar plantations as well.

On the good side, because of all the advance warning and predictions, not one single life was lost. In fact, three babies were born during the night.

However...the cyclone is of such intensity, despite it being downgraded to a Category One, it's gone 250 miles inland and is threatening a mining town. Then of course we'll have to deal with all the associated rain....and we still have three more probable cyclones and two months of this particular weather system that's brought this down on us.

We're not out of the woods yet...though I am stealing that Courage Wolf. That made me laugh.

  8. You'd be more than welcome to it, mate....

  9. And I really mean it this time. Cyclone Yasi is about to hit our coast...in about five hours, local time. And when I say it's a monster, it is genuinely no understatement. We are deeply fortnuate it's not hitting the southeast of the state in which I live, but I still have grave fears for a lot of people.

To give you a sense of the scale....

    http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news...from=public_js

That's what Yasi would do to the US and other places. And we still have at least a month and three more probable cyclones to go....

The main problems were a dumb plot, a goofy villain with his goofy henchmen and the "deus ex machina" plot device of going into the past to save Lois . . . but nothing else and no consequences.

The second film was both better and worse. Better because it had real super villains, with good actors to play them. But it wasn't just things like "throwing the S" or telekinesis finger spray. It was the core of the plot . . . giving up his powers "forever" to boink Lois, and then getting them back with no consequences. And then re-wiring the Fortress to de-power Zod and friends? Zod and company were 2-dimentional villains. Lex was still goofy. Both movies were just plain bad writing. I think most of those decisions were made before Donner left the project.

And as bad as the plots were for those two (and I still like the movies mainly for Christopher Reeve), Superman Returns was even worse. I strongly disliked the "super kid" and the "stalker Superman" and the "lets redo the same plot as the first movie." I went from "Dislike" to "hate" for that film when Singer put in the "look at me, I'm Christ" moment as Supes fell back to Earth. Cheesy, manipulative and just plain bad.

I want a good story, without huge plot holes and good dialogue -- a little bit of suspension of disbelief is OK, but no more "WTF" moments. I want a good Lois Lane -- Erica Durrance has been the best so far, with the other TV versions a little bit behind. I want a villain with interesting character and understandable motivations who is not an idiot -- Braniac would be a good choice, but we have had too much of Lex Luthor. I want some good action that is going to challenge the Man of Steel. I have some confidence that Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder can deliver these things better than previous film versions.

Unfortunately, I have to take issue with your issues of the original film. In many ways, the film is still the benchmark of how superhero origin films are made and it touches all the bases brilliantly. Bearing in mind that when Donner was hired, he came to it with the understanding that Superman (then nearing his fiftieth anniversary) was Americana, part of the American mythology, I don't find the movie at all camp or ridiculous.

Lex wasn't being goofy, but you needed the contrast to the straight-laced Superman/Clark Kent that Chris Reeve was intent on playing. He was extremely mindful in many interviews that children were watching these movies and he never wanted to betray those views of Superman, whereas Hackman was allowed to be more over the top and extravagant as Lex, because that contrast served to highlight why one was the hero and the other the villain. And yes, it's deliberately played that way, because at the time you couldn't play for an PG-15 or M rating.

Superman 2 is hard to argue against, but when you bear in mind the horrendous nature of the dispute between the Salkinds and Donner, it's a miracle the film even made it to the cinemas. I can correct you on the goofy plot decisions (throwing the S-shield, etc) in that these were made post-Donner and if you go back and watch it again, you'll note very clearly the scenes where you can't see Gene Hackman or Margot Kidder, because they point-blank refused to work with Richard Lester. Hackman in particular was replaced with a body double, and you'll see this clearly in that version of the film (when the boxed set of the movies was released a few years ago, they included a far superior Donner cut of 2, which removes all the stuff he objected to). I refer you here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superma...ard_Donner_Cut to what was changed.

Superman Returns is something of a love letter to the past, unfortunately. The airplane sequence is outstanding and some of the visuals of Superman hovering above the earth and even setting down the out of control car (a visual homage to Action Comics #1) are lovely...but I agree with you, the plot with him becoming Super-stalker and the kid are drastically at odds with what you'd think a Superman story would be all about. I believe Singer was blinded by nostalgia, and it shows...but, I consider it a flawed piece of work rather than outrightly bad. We did at least see Superman as he could be represented on screen.

Moving on from there, I think the combination of Nolan as producer and Synder as director is a good one, because Nolan will typically have a stunning idea and direction for the piece, wheras Synder does action particularly well (as evidenced of course in 300 and the single fight scene in Watchmen), as well as having a surprisingly deft touch for characterisation.

I think the choice for actor is a moot one; I think whilst there could be some argument for Tom Welling in the role, he is however playing a Superman in a very different DC universe than the mainstream viewer would relate to. I think casting is the key; if the actor looks the part somewhat, and can play the character (I remember only knowing Christian Bale from his rave reviews of American Psycho and The Machinist and thought he'd never be able to play Bruce Wayne or Batman), then nationality isn't a factor.

Chris Reeve is remembered in the role because he took it seriously...he'd only been out of the Juliard Academy of Performing Arts for a few years and was a stage actor, a method actor. Look at how he visibly shifts his body posture from Kent to Superman and you can see someone dedicated to getting the characters right. His charisma shone through as Superman and I think that'll be key to getting Superman right. Whenever I think of 'classic Superman', I think to that iconic moment of the first film, where he's flying away and he smiles at the camera. It's a knowing nod to the audience, but I totally buy into the thought of him being Superman at that moment.

I think I have the opportunity to watch The Tudors and will do so now with interest....

  12. I only have one hope, and that's for an absolute nobody in Hollywood terms but a bonafide legend in Australia in Jackie Weaver getting a Best Supporting Actress award.

She's sixty-three, a damn good actor and I hope she doesn't get overlooked after the awards for work in America. Look her up, she's acted with all the Australian 'big names' like Jackman, Kidman and Crowe.

  13. Well, this is a shame. I'm in your camp, David....there were certainly things you could criticise it for (and their fanboyish attitudes about things where there seemed to be no criticism for anything, it seemed), but at the same time, you got previews of upcoming storylines for comics, lots of 'hey, isn't this toy/comic/movie/whatever cool?' articles, and the madly funny Mego stuff.

Being a tabletop gamer, seeing the venerable Dragon and Dungeon magazines just shut up shop made me very very sad. It feels like niche interests and hobbies are becoming homogenised and 'cleaned up' for mass consumption. I kind of like the rough around the edges feel these things had.

  14. Yeah, it's a true shame that JLA/Avengers hasn't been recognised in any continuity way, because of all of the great one-off encounters or moments that they have, not the least being the epic one-page standoff between Batman and Captain America, and the whole third issue being a glorious Silver Age reimagining of both teams' entire histories.

I agree with Crazy1van about the last five years of DC...and probably Marvel. Couldn't we have someone punch Superboy-Prime back and get rid of all the silliness and bad writing?

Hm. My name got mentioned here, so personal bases (aka apartments):

Ideally, this would come with a series of 'theme' maps that you could cut down from existing mission maps. So you'd have offices, caves, ice caves, tech bases, and so on. This ties back into my idea about instanced 'neighbourhoods' for bases. A certain fantasy game that I play allows for three sizes of houses, being personal, deluxe and guild/Supergroup. You could extend that idea to themed neighbourhoods where these bases would blend in, perhaps.

I think that wouldn't be a bad way to go with my aforementioned system of free-standing hook points so you can have a level of customisation that then compliments the costuming excellence that we have. But above all, the amount of furniture items would need to be vastly expanded along with dispensing with the stack-building legacy we have now. It's pushed along the boundaries of creativity, but I'm sure a lot of base builders would love better tools.

  17. Aside from the fact I think I'll be boycotting the cinemas due to the absolute lack of anything that seems to be not Darren Aranonofsky or Christopher Nolan in terms of originality, I think only Westworld stands a chance of surviving an update.

Lethal Weapon had a rare combination of actors and director that were all on the same page, and I don't see that being repeated easily. Bear in mind that was the prototype for every other cop buddy movie ever done, and finally got parodied in The Other Guys.

Interesting note about the Terminator; Arnold did indeed base his performance on Yul Brynner in Westworld in that manner, though he did teach himself to shoot a gun without blinking because that's what John Wayne did...go figure....

  18. Hello all!

As is my custom from time to time, I sit back and speculate about what features I've seen from other games or upgrades to ours could be in turn improved or added to the game to keep it viable and 'modern', for want of a better term. I know the very nature of MMO's mean that you can't always stay on parity with current technology, but let me put out my little wishlist and see what you think!
    • Bases! I've had a long think about this one, and there are two outstanding models of what people seem to like regarding features like this (often just known as housing in most games). The major issue I see discussed by a lot of people are the bases' disconnection to the rest of the game world. They're in their own little pocket dimension and I think that's just one factor in why bases become and afterthought. The best solution I've seen to this problem is instanced 'neighbourhoods' or zones. Multiple instances of an existing bit of land or purpose-built zones with buildings in them. In this case, I think facades would work better, unless substantial effort were made to add external customisation to bases. I don't see that happening, but I do think instanced zones would add more of a housing feature to the game, and really, bases are more decorative in nature now than functional.
    • Tied into that is how you decorate your base. I think it only deserves the barest mention that the current system of stacking and tweaking whilst vastly creative is also very limiting. The ability to take an item and put it anywhere you wanted to I think would be a must. Add to that an expanded range of housing items, and the move from 'bases' to 'houses' would give the creative base builders a new lease on life and the base system also.
    • Graphics quality! Very much a vanity request on my part, but I continually fall in love with modern looking games and went so far as to seriously consider Aion for a short while because of how it looked (I said it was vain). Praetoria went a long, long way to addressing this for me, but I'd love to see this integrated into the game with perhaps less technical issues than the on/off system we have now. I have a reasonably high-end system and Praetoria can still crunch my framerate, whereas an offline game with comparable quality just shrugs and moves on.
    • Hand in hand with this for me are costumes. Don't get me wrong, I think CoH has probably the best costume creation system out there. But. We saw from other games how preset textures, additional anchor points on the body (forearms, thighs, neck, etc) and a broad range of 3D objects over just patterns makes a difference. I've felt for a little while now that the costume creator could use an overhaul just to streamline itself and commit to some long-standing requests like backpacks and so on (though some hints from a certain Sexy One suggest this may be happening, yay!) and move away from things such as the constant 'flapping' animation for capes particularly. The natural flow and movement of cloth whilst tricky to do I think adds to costumes and it'd serve the game well here.
    • Environmental combat! I mean...this is a staple of superhero stories, where a fight will break out and the combatants will do some breaking of their own. Modern game engines can employ physics effects, but I often felt what we saw in the Safeguard/Mayhem missions were wasted being on very specific instanced...well, instances. It's good to see Skulls beating on vehicles which will then catch on fire or even explode, but your super-strong types want to grab that fire hydrant/lampost/car/truck/object and whack someone with it! The same applies to any power really that could viably impact the environment around them. The whole city doesn't have to be like that, but like Hazard Zones, you could have 'in zone' Hazard Zones that say are having lots of problems with Skulls or something and in you go, knowing that the area is interactable. And honestly, why not expand the Safeguard/Mayhem tech to other missions? Combine these two things and you are really offering another layer to the already fun combat we have here.
    • That ties in for me with the environment itself. Being a roleplayer, I like 'dressing seasonally' with my characters, and it's disappointing to have a Winter Event but no actual winter anywhere in the city except the Ski Chalet! War Witch said she'd want the weather to have some game effect, but beyond Fog of War for visibility, has anyone ever see it be anything other than cosmetic? Why not have the weather be in proportion to the city? Noone denies that Dark Astoria and Neutropolis's ambience benefits greatly from a really simple visual effect, so why not apply this elsewhere? Peregrine Island being a bit squally and prone to perhaps fog banks? Same with Independence Port? And as for actual seasonal weather, you don't really need rain to be impacting your character's avatar, do you? Just some animation of rain, some sound for thunder and lightning and off you go. It can be done on a system comparable for CoH and I've seen it done on a relatively modern game. If Praetoria can give us sunny days, then I'm having trouble seeing why Paragon City can't get some too.
Well, that's pretty much it for me....I'm happy to be told why such and such a feature can't/won't/be ever possible in the game, but I also sometimes think that after seven years that if the devs aren't thinking about things like this, then...why aren't they at the very least for a potential successor to this game? Maybe they are....

  19. Well....let's see what I'm grateful for:

    • The safety of my friends and pretty much a lot of people I know after the floods here in Brisbane and Queensland.
    • The utter generosity of those both affected and unaffected by said floods in giving their time, heart and charity to those most in need.
    • My SGmates over the last few days in giving me tons of support whilst I was at my most anxious and concerned, and getting me to play and be involved to help distract me from what I couldn't do to help.
    • This game. This game for being the refuge that it can be for so many and providing an atmosphere of welcoming anyone and everyone into the community and having that reflected on these boards. Sometimes people will just post here and talk about their problems, and there is inevitably someone who will respond and offer help. And that is so rare in the MMO community.
    • War Witch for bringing about this particular thread! Yes, I still owe you a custom action figure! Real Life got in the road, but it is done and just needs finishing touches.
    • This community, for being who you are. We're all opinionated, all passionate but damned if you're not some of the most generous and giving and caring people I've had the pleasure to read about.
I think that'll cover it. Hero on!

  20. Good news; the waters have receded, but the water is dirty and unsafe. We're down to reclaiming what homes we can and beginning the very slow rebuilding process...but we still have three months of very wet weather to survive first.

My thoughts and prayers for everyone else affected by any severe weather event at the moment.

    S.
  21. It is, and fortunately the river peaked a good six feet under the predictions, which spared hundreds of properties here, but there's still roads cut, infrastructure damaged, and the river...the river is horrendously dangerous right now. You'll all probably see a video today about two guys on a small yacht that capsized late yesterday afternoon my time. It's here, but there is a better video that I've yet to find but saw on tv.

    http://video.news.com.au/1740979629/Yacht-capsize-drama

The river will drop another six feet again tomorrow and it's moving easily about 15-20 knots. What's worse is that the weather conditions that created all this are still around for the next two or three months and cyclone season has just started. As I type this, there is a cyclone about 650 miles off the east coast, and one is due to manifest around the 26th, the day after Australia Day. If one of those even gets close, we'll get the same magnitude of rainfall again....and I don't know if we can survive that.

I don't have an exact photo, but this should help illustrate things.

Currently, the only thing showing of this structure is the triangular white roof at the front of the ramp. The pylons (which are concrete) have been ripped from their moorings in the river bed, and the grounds of the university are submerged past the trees you can see in the background to the left. It's quite possible by morning that will disappear.

I saw that on tv, and it scared the hell out of me. Little did I know that the rain that made that happen would come this way. Toowoomba is north and west, which is the way the river system tracks with the only exit being the Brisbane river.

  24. Heh, first of all...no crocs in the water. Some smart alec posted a photo of one right in the heart of the city, but it was revealed to be a hoax. The water's moving way too fast for that (probably 10-15 knots) and there's tons of debris coming down (I've seen boats, pontoons, concrete pontoons...a whole riverside restaurant got smashed to pieces today...) to prevent any animals riding in. What is the fear is dengue fever, something spread by mosquitoes. Mosquito coils are on the shopping list now.

I posted up a new video just now on my Youtube channel showing the higher level. Still have power, still have net. Time to sit and wait.
