I only had a chance to look at costume/expansion sets, but the prices for those seemed reasonable. My one concern was that sets were offered that I knew I already owned, while others I thought I might not... well, I'm leery of trying to buy until I know for sure what I already have.

    Dear Devs.

I appreciate the difficulties of a rough launch, but there is one thing that should never have made it live:

You shouldn't be presented with the option to purchase things you already own in the store.

For example, Going Rogue content and costume packs you already bought with real money. This is going to be confusing for many and result in petitions when people click the wrong button and buys the wrong thing.

If this were fixed I'd simply buy up any packs I hadn't (I think two), but since I can't trust the game not to rip me off for things I paid cash for already I won't be buying costume packs.

I found a workaround for the server list issue.

    1. Log in/attempt to log in to another server.
    2. Log out/get kicked out.
    3. Repeat until the server list is rearranged and Exalted shows up.

It's glitchy, but I finally got Exalted onto my list and am now waiting for servers to come up.
  5. You can log in.

You can't get past the server select screen.

You cannot select the Exalted server. It's past the bottom on the scroll down bar and any attempt to select it the menu scrolls up and you end up selecting a different server (and being kicked out).

Grrrr. Not being able to get in I understand. The bugged UI that won't allow you to select the new server I do not understand.

It's only a violation of your privacy and civil rights if you don't agree to it and they do it anyway.

That said I don't like it. I understand they want to watch out for botting which is rampant in another NC Soft game where the botters/goldselllers have destroyed that game's economy. That led to a violent round of purges of the innocent and guilty alike, resulting in there only being 4 servers left and the game not even on the market 2 years yet. It's a fun game, but the economy stinks and the paranoia level is deservedly high among the playerbase.

I would rather there be a clear line about only watching for purposes of the game and not my financial information, political views, etc. Game employees have been known to do shady things. There's nothing to say a fired employee won't just start up a new goldselling business using customer lists, now he may decided to skip the marketing and go straight to your bank account if the EULA's tools include a keylogger.
  7. Day One of the First Rikti War

Dr. Helen Markov, later to be known as the heroine Steele Magnolia
    22 years old
caucasian, auburn hair in a simple ponytail, hazel eyes, glasses
5'8" (however she is wheelchair bound) 130 lbs

Helen was at work with her father, Yevgenij Markov, at the family business Markov Industries (metallurgical applications) in Brickstown. Her mother was PPD Sergeant Debbie Markov in Galaxy City (where the family home is near Gemeni Park).

Her mother was injured during the attack while evacuating civilians to the sewers in Gemini Park. Helen and her father took shelter from the bombardment in the basement of Markov Industries. They were dug out of the partially collapsed building three days later.

The Rikti attack led Helen to focus her metallurgical research from deep sea drilling applications to weaponry that would pierce Rikti armor. Seven years later (with the start of the game) she would don a suit of armor with neurological implants, carry a rifle, and fight the rikti herself as Steele Magnolia.
  8. My list isn't nearly as impressive, but I'm happy with it.

    Virtue:
    Cmdr Prometheus 16-22

Because of the reschedule I was able to get significant playtime for 2xp weekend for the first time in years.
  9. The game is crashing repeatedly on me as soon as I get back in. I'm going to be troubleshooting to find the problem. I'm sorry to let you down.

  10. Oooh this sounds like fun, and I'm glad to hear about the channel too.
  11. I'll try to be there. I've got a noon EST megaraid on LOTRO I've been roped into to help my husband. Hopefully we'll be done by then.

  13. The ability to indulge my creative streak is what drew me to this game. For me it has always been about the alts, the endless combinations and customization. I've got over 50 characters I still play and 11 of them are 50s. All of them have stories, either written here in the forums, in the ID section, or only in my head. I could never focus on just one or two to the detriment of playing the others to really make use of the Incarnate system.

I've wanted endgame and I'm glad that the people who wanted this are getting it. I figure I'll be a dabbler, because I don't want and would not enjoy grinding one character. Even my main doesn't have a single incarnate ability yet. Incarnates have encouraged me to play my lowbies and make more alts. For me it's about the stories and trying new set combinations, not grinding for ult gear.

For me raiding is something to do once in awhile. It's just not my thing, not in any game. In LOTRO I tend to set max-level characters that have played through solo content aside. In Aion I've not got that far yet. In those games a gladiator is a gladiator and a minstrel is a minstrel... there's no point in trying a second one. Here, there is and I love it.

    Buff Toggle NPC
    • An NPC has been added in Pocket D which allows players to select whether or not they are affected by the movement-affecting components of certain player powers. This setting can be changed at any time by visiting this NPC.
      • Affected powers are: Speed Boost, Increase Density, Inertial Reduction, Enforced Morale, and Accelerate Metabolism.
      • This NPC can also allow the player to select whether they wish to always accept Mystic Fortune or always reject Mystic Fortune.
      • This NPC can also display to the player which Praetorian Arch-Villains they have not defeated for the Dimensional Warder badge.
      • This NPC can also allow the player to select whether they wish to receive the benefits of Group Fly / Group Energy Flight or not.
      • This NPC can also allow the player to select whether they wish to receive the benefits of Team Teleport or not.
Nice workaround for people who do not want these buffs! I want everything, but there are many people who do not want them. This works well for everyone. Visit the NPC, set it once, and forget about it. No popups asking if you want it or not everytime, or iautomatic acceptance.

    Just one big thing---

Where's the AoE for Clear Mind?! Please!!!
  15. I'd have to go with:

    1. Steele Magnolia - My Main on Pinnacle, the character I created with my husband and our friends when we first played the game even though they're all gone now, just in case they ever return.

    2. Sgt Pandora - My Main on Liberty, SG coleader, signature character that everyone knows me by.

That said I wouldn't go FTP. I love alting too much. I've got about 50 across 3 servers.

    Things I'll pay for:

    1. Anything purely cosmetic. Costume pieces, effects, customization options, props, animation options, emotes, title colours and so on.
    2. Anything purely for convenience. Remote Tailor access, remote Market access, larger Global Friends list, more extra build slots, etc.
    3. Anything that's purely pointless. Non-combat untargetable pets, the Rock and Snowball powers, access to a purely cosmetic VIP lounge somewhere, that sort of thing.

*I'd be willing to pay for these things even if they aren't technically new additions, but I'm paying to unlock them at character creation as opposed to unlocking them via in-game achievements.

Things I feel I'm entitled to as a VIP:

    1. Powers-related additions. New powersets, new ATs, proliferated old powersets, revamped old powersets, new power pools, epic pools and patron pools, new character-specific tempermanent power and things of that nature.
    2. World-related additions. New zones, new instance tilesets, revamped zones, new rooms added to old tilesets, mini-zones, hub-zones and such.
    3. Mission-related additions. New story arcs, new task forces, new trials, new raids, new contacts, new sources of lore or storyline information and suchforth.
    4. Subsystem-related additions. New currencies, new game systems (Inventions/Architect/Incarnates), new types of activities and everything else like this.

*I CAN be persuaded to show understanding if large additions in at least three of the above four categories above and beyond the norm are added in the game as a paid expansion, but it needs to be BIG.

Things I feel should never be sold for real money:

    1. Influence. Never, ever.
    2. Loot of any kind. Enhancements, recipes, salvage, tickets, merits, shards, threads, components or anything else of the sort. Just no.
    3. Experience and levels, or boosts to either of those. Under no circumstances.
    4. Lifting game balance restrictions. Taking powers earlier than normal, putting more than six slots in powers, trading powers for slots, slots for powers, using enhancements below their minimum level or above their maximum level, entering into otherwise forbidden places. Do not.
    5. Character power. Powers, slots, Incarnate boosts, buffs and so on. Do not want.

    That about covers it.
I agree with this with one exception. Eve Online sells in-game currency for real money at a rate that eliminated gold farmers. It stabilized the ingame economy. That may not work here as so much in EO is time and effort related vs instaloot.

I would also pay for more base options: More cosmetic options and more storage options.

Things I'd like to see that shouldn't be pay-for:

    1. A recall friend that works across zones/instances.
    2. Better animations for a lot of sets, especially Broadsword. I play Aion and the animations there are amazing.
    3. The ability to pay rent with a button on the SG list. It's annoying to have to go see the SG registrar.

Edit: I'd also pay for the ability to have more than 36 characters on a server. I'm currently at 33 on my main server and it's just not enough.

To the best of my knowledge, VIP accounts were not "dropping like flies." Some dropped, but there was by no means a mass exodus. Neither I nor anyone I know in game moved to 50+ zones; I've got characters new and old, in low and high level ranges on 11 servers and have never felt the need to avoid specific zones during the transition.

While I certainly saw awful chat spam in the earliest days, it really wasn't any worse than launch or expansion releases.* There were new players that were serious troublemakers, but there were almost as many vets skewering newbs (not n00bs) for asking the same types of questions we all asked when we first started playing. Not all n00bs were new players.

I find LOTRO just about as friendly and happy now as I have since the beginning (Founder, earliest alpha member). There were definitely some speed bumps for a little while, but nothing to cause panic or make me not want to log in. As you noted, Turbine responded pretty quickly to harassment reports and nipped much of the drama in the bud. Hopefully that too is something Paragon has been watching.

The overwhelming majority of new players I've had any dealings with have been very pleasant. There was no massive horde of savages washing over the servers, just a few bad apples here and there.

Sometimes I think the few significant instances of problems get blown 'way out of proportion to reality because some players expected the worst, so they saw it -- whether it was really that bad all around or not (my experience says not). YMMV, but my advice to CoH/V players is to go into this with an overall positive attitude, while realizing there will be some bumps in the road. It will make for a much smoother transition and better experience for all of us.

*NOTE: I don't have OOC chat on, but turned that off at launch and never looked back.
OOC chat was the worst. I always kept in on because some people ask for help in OOC rather than Advice. Sometimes the chat moved into other channels, but the abuse was primarily in OOC. This was how it was on my server. I don't know about other servers.

It's much better now, but the transition was rough. My kinship found about a dozen new good players and we're the better for it. We did avoid the starter zones, then Lonelands, and primarily stuck to the highend except for when helping our new players with tours and the like.

I think COH can learn from LOTRO's experience and hope they do. I also play AION and really, really hope that COH's store is more like LOTRO's and less like AION's. The pricing and value is worlds apart.

I like some of the store options which enhance the game, such as additional storage and shared storage. I've spent probably $300 in the LOTRO store, above and beyond my Lifetime suscription. Not all FTP is bad, it's just that the bad is very bad. I'd like to see COH ahead of the curve and prepared for it with tools and GM staff in place when FTP begins, rather than trying to react to it after the fact.

In AE, profane language is just not allowed in the arcs, and I think a similar function could be applied to the chat for F2P accounts (I think. I have no clue how to program that in, just saying it theoretically seems possible). There is also something I think they have that bans you from using chat currently if you have too many things said in x amount of time. And they don't get in game email on F2P from what I heard. So this should be a minor issue after a short amount of time IMO.
What LOTRO did was put a name-right click "Report Harassment" option in place similar to the "Report Gold Spammer/Spammer" option here. It autoreports a petition that includes the name/line of chat and puts the name on the ignore list.

The chat abuse was so pervasive there simply wasn't enough time to petition it all via normal petition form. I'm not talking about profanity or mild obscenity, which you can just /ignore. I'm talking about incidents like a player that used /regional chat to spout his white supremacy and racial jokes and all the others that chimed in.

The right click report option helped a lot. The worst offenders disappeared when their FTP accounts were being banned as fast as they made them. I hope COH does this as well as beefs up their support staff.
  20. I may take my mother's acct to Premium until she gets her character to 50. For myself, I will stay VIP.

I play LOTRO which has been FTP for about a year now. I posted here
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...=263583&page=7
about that, and am linking so I don't have to repeat myself too much. FTP has been a mixed bag from a player POV. My LOTRO kinship (SG) did not lock down recruiting to exclude FTP, but many did. We found many good FTP players, most of whom went VIP. From a management perspective the FTP is very good money, which can lead to more game development, but the game store model is so profit driven it can be very annoying to have it shoved down your throat and lead to anything good being obtainable only from the store.

I wouldn't go to any pre-20 zone the first week, or pre-30 the next, etc for all the influence in the game. Without pve zone level limits there won't be very many places safe to go, thank goodness for instance missions, tab editing, and getting the hell rid of that "Helper" tag. I'm dropping that from all my characters ASAP.
  21. I also play LOTRO which went FTP awhile back which like DDO is run by Turbine. The limited content, limited slots, big store, and monthly points for VIPs (including the name 'VIP') is a carbon copy of Turbine's model. FTP has its ups and downs in my experience.

Disclaimer: This is 100% my opinion based on my own experience.

The influx of new FTP players will bring their own problems. Newbie zones and later mid level zones are going to become very crowded and inhospitable places to be. Offensive and abusive chat, clueless newbies asking the same question (ex: Where can I get a horse? Is that near Atlas Park?) over and over and over and over, killstealing, trouble getting enough mobs for mission completion, inf begging. If you think this was ever bad before in the last 7 years you have seen nothing yet.

The game store is going to be shoved down your throat. Just accept it. On the forums, on the official website, on the loading screen, on in-game UIs, and I would be very surprised if we didn't see it on in-game billboards. LOTRO just redesigned the entire character UI to get more 'store' buttons into it.

There will be things available only in the store that are not earnable anywhere else. Some of these things will seem like real game changers or gamebreakers depending on your point of view. Extra character slots, incarnates, costume items, and the like are only the beginning. Expect things like nifty new temp powers and temporary bonuses (ex: damage, xp). Maybe we will even see the base upgrades we've been begging for these last many years. It can be fun to shop in the game store and it can be a slap in the face. "We've been asking for this for XX years!" and "Wow, neat!" and "Why can't I earn this in game?"

FTP game store money is good for profit and game development. MMOs seem to forget that VIP money is good for that too. If MMO and paying customer were husband and wife, then the FTPer is the sweet young thing on the side that gets all the attention and presents. An example of this is LOTRO's coming Rise of Isengard expansion, for which the preorder package is almost exclusively designed around enticing the FTPer.

FTP demands more decisive and swifter GM response. The chat abuse alone can kill a game if not dealt with swiftly and decisively.... for whatever that is worth, as a ftp account can be created with a new dummy email in 5 minutes. There really are people that will churn through numerous ftp accounts just to be chat trolls and even brag they know they're going to be banned and will be back, they're losing nothing. However, ignoring the elephant in the room is even worse. LOTRO tried that the first two weeks of FTP as their GM staff was swamped, nice new FTPers thought this was what the community was like and quit, VIP accounts were dropping like flies, and those of us who stayed moved into the 50+ zones and didn't come out for months. Now, in LOTRO an harassment petition will typically be answered in 5 minutes or less. Seriously.

Communities may close ranks against the new FTPers (not the oldtimer FTPers) out of a sense of self preservation. Think back to the heydays of AE PL farming, pre-SSKing, back with Rikti Comm Officers were king. It's going to be like that, only worse, for the first six months. If your SG recruits be sure to do a lengthy provisional no-bin test first. If you already do that, double the time. There will be good FTPers and there will be FTPers who were banned from their playing games and have nowhere else to go.

I hope COH takes the good and learns from the bad in the FTP model. It's been a real adjustment as a LOTRO player and I still wish they'd never done it. The game was dwindling before the influx of ftp money, but it was a friendlier and happier place.

The first thing I'm doing is taking off the "Helper" tag. For those of you on Liberty who know me that may put the magnitude of community change coming in perspective.

  23. Is it too much to ask that textures match within a set? I know there are problems matching textures with pieces from different sets and different artists, but the same set?

Disclaimer: I don't know what the male set looks like, but for the female set:
-The skirt, jacket, belt texture doesn't match the chest detail.
-The skirt, jacket, belt texture doesn't dye well. It's very subdued in hue and is absolutely horrid in pale colors.
-The lace in victorian steampunk 1 jacket doesn't match the belt (bustle) lace

Now I know why all the female pieces in the video were dyed black, because that's the only color that looks decent and it doesn't show detail well.
