I was surprised by that too. It's very atypical of our forum community to be so dismissive of others.

Excellent work as always, D_R. I always look forward to your videos.

Quote:Weekly updates? You must be joking. I don't know of any MMO's that do that. You know, contrary to popular belief the customer is not always right. Sometimes the customer is incredibly unreasonable and impatient in fact. Give the Devs a break, they're working on it as fast as they can.The devs received an early gift this year: an influx of new and returning players to their 60 month old title. Some would say that was more than a gift - some would call it a miracle.
The devs have, in return, given their customers the gift of silence. After all, nothing communicates to customers quite like no communication at all.
What the devs need to understand is that they are still in that "golden window" of opportunity with the recent influx of players that have been filling up the servers. You have them for the moment but you have not retained them yet, and there is a very real danger that when they depart they will drag some long time players with them.
Silence is not going to help retain these players, iterating faster will. Right now your focus needs to be on customer service (communication!) and iterating FASTER than your competition.
Iterating faster means that while new content goes out in ISSUES, game changes that improve quality of life for your players CAN GO OUT in weekly patches. It would give you the flexibility to announce today that "I19 is delayed until after the holiday, but here is inherent fitness while we work on it. Enjoy!".
It is called agile and in this case it is the difference between frustrating your player base and delighting them.
And if you're in such an all-fired hurry for it to go live now, get on the beta server and help the Devs test it. I've been PM'ing back and forth with a guy in QA since yesterday trying to get the Dominator bug fixed. More people testing always helps. -
Prices were crazy on lowbie stuff this weekend too. I posted some salvage on a new Dom I started up and was shocked when it started selling for tens of thousands per piece. We're talking lowbie common salvage like inanimate carbon rods. Very weird.

Quote:Actually I have the exact opposite perception. To me, the hero AT's are so thoroughly designed around group play that it holds them back. Whereas the villain AT's are all excellent soloists that can also team if need be. The latter fits my personal thought process better I guess.Every thing on Villains just seems like a weaker version of heroes. lol not as strong as a blaster. Not as tuff as a tank. Know what i mean. I was thinking maybe a brute.
As others have said, don't approach the villain AT's like you would their hero "equivalents." A good example of what I mean: there's a guy in my SG who loves controllers. His first 50 was one. He literally is unable to solo a Dom, yet he can solo a Controller all day. He just can't seem to make the leap that Dominators are not Controllers and require a different approach. -
I knew all but 4 of them.
I couldn't remember the titles for Issues 2,4,13, and 15. -
I've always loved super heroes. I read various titles all through my teen years, and played a couple of super hero pen and paper RPG's in college. I've also been an avid PC gamer ever since I got my first computer (a Commodore 64 -- yes I realize I just dated myself
).
When I first heard about CoH I scoffed at the idea of an MMO. I just couldn't see paying $50 for a game then having to also pay a subscription fee each month just to play it. Of course, I didn't know that MMO's did free content updates. Had I known that it might have affected my opinion on the matter.
Well one day I was at the store to pick up a few things and thought I'd go browse the PC Games section to see if anything new and interesting had come out. I had that itch to try a new game. I saw CoH on the shelf once again and thought "Oh why the hell not, if I don't like it I can always cancel the sub."
I've been playing MMO's ever since. I've tried other MMO's here and there, but I always wind up coming home to CoH. It was my first and is still the best. -

*looks at all of her filming scripts and shot footage, then shrugs*
And I'll have more hard drive space again.

Quote:Yeah, I'm going to be pretty busy setting up inherent Fitness on my various characters. All that respeccing..........oh boy. Maybe I should contract Techbot Alpha to install a data jack in my skull.Oh, I understand that. I'm not really complaining, I'm just confirming my previous low expectations of the Incarnate system. It's not going to work out for me, but if it makes a lot of other players happy, then it's a good addition to the game. And I'll be happy with my inherent Fitness. (And with close to 50 characters, that alone will keep me busy for a while.)
-
Quote:Mirai, I understand where you're coming from, as my play style is very similar to yours. Sadly, I don't think you and I are the "primary targets" of the Incarnate system. People that want to spend large amounts of time on their max level characters, pounding on ever-bigger baddies are the people that will reap the the most benefits from this system. Players like us, that enjoy leveling new characters and that solo heavily, will get far less out of it. I've played around in other MMO's with detailed "end game" activities, and they are always group-oriented.Well, I was thinking of doing the upper 40s hero story arcs with my level 50 Energy/Regen Stalker. I suppose I might get enough shards out of that, if I'm lucky, and I kill everything. But I was also thinking of doing hero flashbacks heavily with that character. And I have a lot of other characters to play. And again, there's that lack of incentive to get the shards.
To be honest, I was (pleasantly) surprised Incarnate abilities can be unlocked by solo play at all. It reminds me why I love our Devs so much that they even gave that passing nod to the soloists. I do intend to take advantage of the system as much as I can. But I do realize that my own play style will be slowing me down. That's fine, too. If the Devs didn't make soloing your way to Incarnate powers very slow, power-gamers could get it all done in a weekend or even less. -
Quote:Actually as far as we know right now, Incarnate shards will drop from solo content and can be used to craft the special salvage required to craft the Alpha slot powers, so TFs may not be absolutely necessary. If this is in fact the case, the entire system of becoming an Incarnate can be soloed, albeit very slowly.I am sorry for solo'ers but this is an MMO. Your solo content is untouched and from what i can see the incarnate system isnt really any use for soloing. Same for exemplaring. And you arent being completely ignore as you still have inherent fitness to look forward to.

Isn't this thread a little on the late side?
I was unaware AE was still that popular. Yes, I know some people use it to farm and whatnot, but it long ago ceased to be the PL'ing tool it was during its initial release. -
Quote:I'm not the person you were asking, but I can tell you what was wrong with your comment from my perspective. Your implied tone and word choice were far more condescending and rude than any imagined slight on the part of Positron. You literally implied he lacked the manners of a child. Not cool.Tell me LISAR, what exactly is wrong with expecting people to say "I am sorry" when they admit to a mistake? I would argue that the real wrong is accepting half of an apology when it could be a full and appropriate apology by adding that statement. Didn't your parents teach you to do just that, say "I am sorry" when you were wrong? I know mine did and I teach the same to my own children, it is only right after all.

I rarely get a character's look perfect at creation. Most often I will get the basic theme correct but then inspiration strikes while playing that results in an "evolution" of the hero's appearance. My second attempt is often way better than the initial costume.

- Super Heroes.
- The community in CoH is the best I've had the pleasure of joining.
- Super Heroes.
- Character customization is light years ahead of every other game out there.
- Super Heroes.
- Gameplay is fantastic. You can get a "flow" going in CoH that's hard to match with other games out there.
- Did I mention Super Heroes?

Granted it's been a long time since I did any computer programming, so what I'm about to say may be a little dated, but I think this is probably the issue at work:
It's just a symptom of how computer random number generators work. After all, the numbers aren't truly random, but influenced by a random number "seed". As a result of how these algorithms work, computers can and often do get "stuck" in a range of numbers from time to time. This is why we have the streak breaker code. It's an attempt to limit how often and how hard this impacts the player.
So there's no intent by the Devs to cause the annoying streaks of missing we get on sometimes. It's just a limitation of computer technology they try to work around. -
To the OP, ask yourself this question: Which mechanic do you like better, crits or fury? The answer to that question is your answer to which AT to play imho.
Me? I love Spines. Gimme gimme more spines scrappers. Spines/WP, Spines/Dark, Spines/Fire, heck I'd do Spines/Spines if I could.
Now if they ever give Spines to Brutes.......I'm done for. Absolutely done for. Because then I will have no farking clue what AT to play either as I love them both. -

This isn't directed at any one poster in this thread, but y'know I've been thinking about this subject (MMO difficulty) a lot lately. Here's my take (be patient, this may take a bit):
The business model of an MMO is to get players hooked and then keep them hooked as long as possible so they keep paying. In order to do that content needs to be accessible to as wide an array of people as possible. Also, difficulty has to be at a level that the players don't get bored, but don't get frustrated either. Both boredom and frustration are equally bad because they both can ultimtely lead to the player cancelling their account.
But not every player has the same skill level with online games. What seems easy to some is hard to others. So developers are left with trying to figure out a baseline challenge level that works the best for their game. CoH has taken this one step further and made the difficulty level extremely customizable. Players can fiddle with it to get the experience they want.
But how do the Devs figure out what the "base" should be? Data mining statistics like debt accumulation, mission completion speeds, etc. It doesn't matter how many people come on these boards and say "CoH is easy mode," if the data mining shows that the average subscriber is appropriately challenged, then the Devs will view the base difficulty as being where it should be.
My honest opinion? The standard, base difficulty of an MMO is supposed to be relatively easy. It has to be to retain subscribers. Yes that does mean people that are good at computer games will feel unchallenged at times. That's why the Devs gave us a difficulty slider. It's an attempt to appeal to as wide a number of players as possible and keep the subscriber base going. Yes it's a business decision as well as a game design decision. It has to be. So the next time you feel tempted to say "CoH is easy mode" remember that to survive as a business it's actually a good idea in some ways. If you want more challenge, up the slider. Still not challenged? Turn off a toggle or two. We have the ability to create our own challenge, let's get creative and use it.
Well I think I'm done rambling for now. -
I usually play Doms. When I see a Super Stunner I pop Domination and hold him. The rez is annoying yes, but then I just hold him to death again.
So bring Doms on your teams, it turns him into a kitty cat. -
Darq, I get what you're saying from a build standpoint about Earthquake, but from a practical standpoint while leveling you will be miserable on an Earth/ Dom without it. While leveling Stalagmites alone isn't up often enough to use it every spawn. Being able to rotate out Stalagmites with Earthquake as each recharges is a godsend to a solo Earth/ Dom. Trust me, I learned this the hard way.
If I've misunderstood and this is a respec build for an already 50 Dom, pay me no never mind. -
Quote:When I did the level 20 hero costume mission on my Praetorian MM I was at the default. No difficulty slider in Praetoria and I didn't mess with it prior to doing the mission. I got 5 minions for the ambush. Not difficult for a mastermind, but surprising nevertheless.Show of hands: how many people who face gigantic ambushes are set to +0x0? I'm asking, because this is something the game defaults you when the character has not had his or her difficulty altered since creation or the introduction of the new difficulty setting.
It SHOULD act like +0x1, but maybe it isn't and is instead getting occasionally tagged as something else? As a general rule of thumb, I always try to set my difficulty manually, even if I'm just reaffirming what a character is created with, just to avoid doing this. I'd suggest people who face absurd ambushes try that and see if anything changes.
(Edited to correct as typo. I said "cape" and meant "costume".) -
My pleasure, glad to be of help.
-
Just tested this on my Plant/Fire Dom and I can confirm it boosts both Rain of Fire and Fireball.
-
Stone cages do indeed stop KB.
I eventually decided to do both Mind/Earth and Earth/Psi. Why have one character when you can make two?I haven't played the Earth/Psi much yet, but the Mind/Earth is an extremely good soloist, especially against mez resistant lt's and bosses (largely due to the ST sleep being mag 4).
The one gripe I've had about the Mind/Earth is that he is VERY single target. Granted, Dom's aren't meant to necessarily be AoE monsters, but Earth Assault's ST focus is very noticeable. I have Tremor, but the damage from it is laughable, to be honest.
I'll probably try leveling the Earth/Psi soon. I like the amount of AoE control you get from Earth Control, and Psi Assault has a little more AoE in it than Earth Assault. Should be an interesting pairing.
