  1. I'm an odd one here in Québec: I don't particularly like hockey (although I did play as a junior).

Unless the Canadiens are in the playoffs, then I'm a wholehearted "meh" about it all.

Conversations at the office are a PITA for me.
  2. I couldn't make it after all.

Turns out it coincided with my wedding anniversary weekend.

    Mentor Project

NOTE: This project originally started as an added service from the New Player Council (N P C) on Protector.

If you are interested in using the service, we'll be glad to have you join the channel regardless which server you hail from. Your experience can help others.

If you have interest in becoming a volunteer Mentor, feel free to either join this current project, or start your own based on this one. There is a social group available here at the CoH forums should you decide to volunteer for this ongoing project.

This idea naturally naturally evolved from Protector's original idea of having a New Player Welcoming Night some months back. If you're curious, the original discussions about it occured here.
    ___________________________________________

    Welcome new players!

The New Player Council was created with the intent of making your exploration of the game an easier one by offering assistance to new heroes and villains. The N P C does this by using a global channel, and also by offering more direct partnerships with knowledgeable volunteers for those who would prefer that option through the Mentor Project.

The Mentor Project places the information you need, when you need it, directly at your fingertips where you need it - ingame.

If you are an more experienced player looking to share your time with newcomers, feel free to fill in the Mentor application form here.

More information about the Mentor Project can be found below:

    General Guidelines:
    1. 3 roles defined: Advocates (Stalemate for heroes, Sukyoku for villains), Mentors, and Neophytes.
    2. No official committee or leadership for this project. All Mentors and Advocates have the same "weight" within the Mentor Project, although Advocates can assist in resolving issues between Mentors and Neophytes.
    3. A global channel is used to help coordinate things, and provide another layer to the support network. All Mentors will be OP in this channel, named "N P C" (note the spaces). This is the only mandatory criteria in participating in this project, regardless of role.
    4. Optional mentoring partnerships between more experienced player (Mentor) and less experienced player (Neophyte) exist. They are:
      1. Not enforced, but open - Either party can opt to leave at any time if it doesn't work out for whatever reasons. Mentors will have 100% control over how they can assist the newbie in their care, including what time is spent doing so.
      2. The mentor has no duty towards the newbie except to act as guide. As such, he/she could answer questions, help the Neophyte find a supergroup or start one, team up if schedules permit, etc. The Neophyte will be made to understand that the Mentor is not responsible for his/her enjoyment of the game, nor will there be any expectations of PLing, loot, etc.
      3. Mentors will be free to cover areas of CoH gaming they want with the neophytes, in private, using their judgement about the pertinence to neophyte's game style. This should cover questions re: farming and powerlevelling. To avoid un-needed discussions in the global channel we should keep these talks private. We don't want to impose our own likes / dislikes to them, yet they should be free to learn (or at least find out about) about all aspects of the game.
    5. Graduation ceremonies will occur every 3-4 months for Neophytes. They can then become a Mentor if they like, or move on to other activities.
    6. SG will be available later on for experimentation on base building / SG management. Within any SGs created for/by neophytes, the tier 1 role would be that of the Advocate. Tier 2 reserved for Mentors / graduated Neophytes. All other ranks used for neophytes. Tier names will probably fluctuate due to experimentation. This will be applied to any VGs as well. Coalitions with established SGs / VGs will be considered.
    TL;DR version, for the hurried:
    1. Join / be invited to N P C global channel - mandatory
    2. Join in a partnership with a mentor - optional
    3. Join a N P C SGs / VGs - optional
    4. For Neophytes: Graduate and move onto becoming a Mentor themselves - optional
For information not covered in this post, or for public relations purposes, please contact @Stalemate by sending a forum message.

    Well done.

    O.o

yeah, back to work for me.
I was merely pointing out a Real Life™ situation, based on my own experience, as to why I was agreeing with MI's post that our perception of "heroic do-gooders" is negatively slanted much more so than towards "badass villains".

I thought the comparison was a good way to illustrate this oddity. I couldn't foresee the slight tangent it could have produced.

No one was called stupid, and it wasn't inferred in any way.

Red side players don't have that particularity, because no matter how noble a character they may be playing, they're still in there beating up cops and other vile acts.

It's not a mindset that's limited to this game, either. You can find several stories a week about folks with that self same mentality in the news.
I'll take that a step further, if simply for contrast, from my own Real Life™ experience.

I'm christian. Evangelically so. Big fan of apologetics. Was involved in church building/leading, was a youth leader for 10+ years and worked at a national level for 2 different denominations. I'm still involved in a church, as is the rest of my family, in various functions.

Now as soon as some wrote this, some people's attitudes towards me already started changing based on preconceived ideas and their own opinions re: faith / religion.

I haven't changed - I'm still just a guy trying to "do what's right" and to place the needs of others before my own. But that's not what people will remember in the end.

People will remember the mistakes I did, the fights I got into, the moral failures - the mud on my face. Even more so now that they know I should know and act better. Not a complaint, just a fact btw.

    Why?

Stating you want to do good puts you in the crosshairs automatically and makes you a target when - not if - it fails. People consistently expect more from you if you take a stand and state you're striving to do what's best, or at the very least do what's good. Everything you do gets evaluated in the light of that perspective. Let's call this guy Mr. Goody.

Now if you state that you're a loose cannon, looking out for number 1 first, state that only the strong survive and that the ends justify the means you'll never get as much criticism as that other guy in the paragraph above. Your behavior is right on par with the intended objectives, Mr. Baddy.

So how come Mr. Goody gets a worse rep than Mr. Baddy?

    I'm getting to it.

Mr. Goody tries to do good and sometimes entices others to do the same. When Mr. Goody fails to do good (goes against his current), anything he's said or done before is instantly tarnished. It's invalidated. Most times he doesn't get a do-over.

When Mr. Baddy fails to do "bad"... no one really cares. When he acts egotistically, even at their expense, it's expected. In fact, if things were truly equal, when Mr. Baddy acts altruistically or generously towards others (so also going against his current) he should be seen in the same negative light as when Mr. Goody fails. But instead, congratulations and gratitude will probably be given him.

I know I'm oversimplifying things with this example.

But it remains that the perception of the "goodies" will always be worse than that of a "baddie" right from the start, simply based on that odd quirk of human psychology.

Note: This is a personal viewpoint. Your own expperience may vary.
  11. I love you guys as much as strangers can love on the Internet, but there's no way I'm going to do New Year's Eve in Paragon City.

    Funny gal.

I finally got my time back to do with as I please after P.E.R.C. (yay for levelling characters!), and trying to get more server-wide events going either by running them myself or supporting others doing so. I'd be afraid of going postal again.

Plus, I think some would see my involvement in organized PvP as a clear sign that the apocalypse was upon us.
  13. I'd vote blueside.

Plus, I don't have any villains.
  14. Hi CK!

    Long time no see.

Do you know who (if anyone) is currently involved in representing the Protector server for PvPEC?

PS - I think I still have your cat ears headband.

I'd love to get in on this, since I haven't ran a Hami raid since the changes were brought out in Issuje 9 (I think?).

As soon as the date is set I'll be promoting it as much as possible.
  16. No screencap, but at least a bio for Papa Nicolas:
A nightmarish turn was taken in New Orleans that night in 1934 when Nicolas Saint only expected to make a few extra dollars during the yuletide season by impersonating Santa Claus. Ending up dead in a canal was definitely not the best way to celebrate the season, if he'd been asked.

But no one had asked him anything except his money, and when he refused, hoping the season's festive mood would prevail, all he heard was the sound of a blade in his gut.

All he felt was the heat of death first, then the coldness of sewage water.

He felt nothing of the passing of time.

When he finally did hear a question asked it was a bokor's voice: "Will you seek revenge on those who prey upon their brothers?"

Surprise was quickly replaced by rage as wind once again filled his lungs to answer "Yes."

    Heheehehehehe.

Will need invite to SG eventually. Parked in Atlas for now.
  17. Henry Silva: "Is this the way it happened? Was Jack the Ripper in fact a sixty-foot sea serpent from Scotland? Did I take this job to make a quick buck? We may never know the answers to these questions."

  18. That's another way to populate the server indeed!

    Congratulations guys.

... but they decided to keep all the stores under the "FutureShop" name open, even when they started to open brand-new Best Buy stores. Even funnier, they would still open new FutureShop stores from time to time (I don't know if they still do).

So, in some malls (ex. Centre Laval, in Laval near Montreal), you can have 1 FutureShop and 1 Best Buy a few hundred feet from each others'.

From the few visits I've made to Best Buy stores, they have more or less the same inventory, but their prices are usually a few bucks higher that FutureShop.

In Brossard, the Future Shop and Best Buy are almost close enough to share the same parking lot. The FS was moved from Taschereau Blvd, expended, and then a Best Buy built right next to it to keep it company.

My LCD TV was damaged (depression on panel itself - crushed a bit and smudged pixels) by the aforementionned FutureShop during a repair (sent in on extended FS service plan) and it was iffy for a moment as to whether they were going to go with repairing/replacing it, or just sticking by the "but you signed for it, implying you checked it" spiel.

Thankfully they opted to fix it, even if that meant another month or so without a TV for me.

I got the impression Best Buy had better prices in my area. I never had a bad situation occur with BB yet.
  20. Energy Mélée is yuletide-y if I color it green and red, right?
  21. I've sent an invitation to the Mentor Project social group through these boards to everyone who has signed up.

Check your Control Panel (USER CP button) to confirm.
  22. Time for me to get cracking on planning the next N P C event, introducing the Mentor Project.
  23. Those who signed up to be Mentors, please add the N P C channel to your favorite chat tab: /chan_join "N P C". We'll start talking about promoting this over the course of the next few days.
