Quote:Think that's bad, try looking for lethal resists.Granted, DDR is nice, but it's not the end-all, be-all for defense based sets. There's still plenty of +to hit in the end game content to overcome any of that. Run a few Nemesis missions and see how good that DDR is then. Especially since the best DDR sets don't come with heals.
My Elec/Stone Tank on the other hand, with his generous resist numbers, 30% S/L/~Melee IO defense and 900+ HP bonuses, runs through a lot of content on solo 8-man missions and sees hardly any movement in his green bar. I'd like to know why it's ok for resist sets to layer so much mitigation, but not defense sets.
Aett's suggestion of placing them inside the same type sets as defense bonuses are found in seems like a solid idea to me. This way, if some Tankers/Brutes/Scrappers/Stalkers go for extreme survival bonuses, they're going to have to sacrifice other important aspects of their build to do so. If my choice is 4 slotting KC's for S/L defense or 4-slotting some new melee set for a S/L res bonus, then I'm not going to be able max out both. Considering res sets usually hover in the 50% range in dmg types they don't specialize in, it's still going to be hard (or impossible) to cap dam res in all areas.
I'm not suggesting there be as many sets made with res bonuses as there are for def bonuses, but what's available for the two has too big a disparity.
Defense Bonuses for Smashing
Resist Bonuses for Smashing
7 sets. Total. And if you want to take into account that one is a pet set of 5, that makes 6. Oh, and 2 sets are from PVP IOs, so that's going to be expensive, if not greatly time consuming. Oh, and the other sets are difficult for most melee toons to work in. So yeah, the game could tolerate some more useful res bonuses in sets that would make them worthwhile.
So put some adequate resist bonuses in competing sets melee toons would use. It won't be game breaking. -
Eva Destruction - I don't have the spare spaces on Virtue to pad the supergroup with, so it's a non-issue. I won't be. If I'd gone with Victory or another server on which I have no presence, I might have.
Organica - If a recipe or enhancement gets dropped on me by a PUG teammate, that's fine. My wife or global friends, I'll politely hand it back. The focus of the experiment is dropping out of the economy, not total self-sufficiency. If someone is feeling generous and I happen to be in the right place at the right time, that's in keeping with the spirit of the experiment. -
Quote:Or like the ones who told me that my +max hitpoints katana/fire scrapper was an awful build. *nods* She does have more hitpoints than a fire armor tank with no accolades or bonuses, though.Where's the person who's supposed to pipe up and say "THIS IS NOT MIN/MAXY ENOUGH YOU FAIL PURPS IS WHERE ITS AT"?
Or does he only show up when you show oddball character builds like my totally awesome petless Mastermind?
Ah well. Enjoy playing the game the Issue 0 way!
I've got purpled and min-maxed characters. There are many ways to play the game, and I'm just exploring a new one.
Of course, even I am not terribly interested in playing a petless mastermind, but good luck to you? -
Quote:Hadn't occurred to me.Are you able to earn inf in Costume Contests and other player event challenges? Just another idea of how casual players earn inf.
It wasn't high on my list of things to try. I mean, I really think that the crafting costs are not going to keep this character broke - the limiting factors will be the drop rate of salvage and the limits on recipe storage. Influence sinks are not going to catch him all that much - I have a bajillion veteran tailor tokens, and I don't buy inspirations very often at all.
I'll be trying to save as much salvage in storage racks as I can, and crafting as much as I can to use up salvage and recipes.
I don't know how this is going to work out. If I find myself running out of influence, I'll try attending a few player events. Virtue certainly does not lack for them. -
Mousedroid - I picked Tech as my origin. It was a toss-up between that and Magic, but that was a practical decision regarding lighting up Oil Slick Arrow. It was a rough choice, though - I prefer Freakshow to CoT, but CoT to Nemesis.
Silver Gale - I won't store any salvage in Wentworths, no. The only use I will have for Wentworths is working on the Entrepreneur accolade, which will reduce my crafting costs.
Jack Power - I'm choosing not to artificially slow my levelling for this project. If I find myself needing salvage from a lower band, well, that's what exemplaring or Ouro are for. That's my choice; if you chose to run with a similar project, but chose to turn off XP at certain levels, I think it would provide an interesting comparison. I say go for it!
As to the rest:
Day one of the project.
I took the character out into Atlas Park last night, having opted out of the tutorial. My wife, having heard my enthusiasm for the project, decided that she wanted to give it a shot as well. She rolled up a Plant/Storm to play along. We chose not to level-pact.
We ran around, smiting Hellions to get up to level 2. Right about that time, we saw a broadcast for a sewer team. I do like running pick-up sewer teams on new characters, as it's a quick way to get up to level six or seven in fairly short order.
This was the best sewer team I had ever been on, and it may cause problems in the next few levels as a result!
There were eight of us, and we had a guardian angel - one Ketan, a level 50 mind/kin controller who shepherded us along. We were speed-boosted, healed, fulcrum shifted, and the mobs were put to sleep. She kept us all alive - there was not one single death on the sewer run. We rolled all the way through to the Steel Canyon exit of the sewers, which is a first for me, and I exited the sewers with a full salvage inventory and three bubs left until I hit level 11.
Drop Trooper has trained up, created his own personal supergroup - Opting Out - and logged off in Wentworths for day job credit.
It was a successful first run. I've missed the opportunity to run the Atlas Park safeguard, but I do have the City Traveler vet reward, so I picked up Teleport to get around town.
My slots look rather empty and barren at the moment, but that is standard for my characters, as I generally do not worry about slotting anything other than a few training enhancements that drop until level 12.
I'm planning, for the next adventure, to do the invention tutorial and either the Midnighter arc or a few radio missions/the King's Row safeguard. Probably the safeguard mission; better chance of origin appropriate DOs.
I suppose, that if I really want to do this properly, I should set up a Photobucket account - It's on my list of things to do, so that I can show off my enhancement screens and the like. Once I begin to get some enhancements slotted, I will also be using Mids to track and show off how effective (or ineffective) my slotting becomes. -

I admit I haven't really started this project yet, but I'm not seeing how the lack of income will really affect me. I'm not buying any recipes, not even from the University crafting tables, and no salvage. My only expense should be crafting costs, which can be brought even further under control with day job bonuses.
Income and influence shouldn't be the problem, just the luck of the random number generator. -
I found it more ridiculous that he could lift a continent made of green kryptonite, myself.
*shrug* -
So, I was thinking. It is a dangerous thing, because I occasionally come up with crazy ideas that I can find no compelling reason to avoid.
The idea I had was to create a new character who would opt out of the economy entirely, but still use the invention system.
The thought has coalesced and bubbled through my brain, and hence I have created Drop Trooper: A Plant/Trick Arrow controller who will only use what drops for him. No enhancements will be purchased from vendors, Wentworths will not be used. The only thing he is allowed to purchase will be inspirations from contacts.
I have not yet started this project in earnest, but I will be soon, and I will post about my experiences here.
The rules I have set for this project are as follows:
1) No purchase of any enhancements from stores.
2) No use of Wentworths in any way.
3) Any merits or tickets received will be randomly rolled at the first opportunity.
4) This character will be making his own solo supergroup, primarily for storage of enhancements and salvage. No one else can be admitted to the supergroup, to prevent getting things mixed up.
5) I will not give any help from my own characters - no emailing influence or salvage to myself.
6) No asking others for salvage.
7) Set IOs will be slotted over standard crafted IOs, which will be slotted over standard enhancements.
8) Any recipes, salvage or enhancements that are not used will either be vendored or emailed to my global. (I'm crazy, but if for some reason the character ends up with a redundant Miracle +recovery, I'm not vendoring it!)
I just want to see how well an independent can be slotted without any trade. I have chosen Plant/Trick Arrow/Soul as the way to go; the power pools will include Presence, Flight and Teleportation. (No fitness - I'll wait for Issue 19.) These power choices will allow, eventually, for the character to slot IOs from every category save two - Accurate Healing and Sniper Attacks.
Yes, a Trick Arrow/Dark Blast/*patron defender could slot every set save for Confuses, but I really don't want to play that character. (I will, however, send one million influence to anyone who can point me to a build that can slot inventions from every single set!)
So, a character slotted entirely by luck of the draw. It should be interesting. Watch this space for further developments. -
It'll do quite all right as a farmer, but it is certainly not the best out there.
Invuln is quite survivable, and Fire Melee is as good damage as you can get on a tank. (Fiery Melee is a good mix of ST and AoE damage. Yes, /Elec has more AoE damage, and any number of primaries can match or exceed its ST damage.)
But, your primary gives you no extra damage to make the farming go faster. A Shield/Fire or Fire/Fire will farm faster. -
What you would probably see under my solution is tanks that cap S/L resist, which can be done with some tanks by taking Tough anyway. Even with major changes to resist IO bonuses, you won't see too many tanks trying to build their way from 35% cold resistance to the cap.
But you might see some Fire tanks trying to shore up the hole in their resistances to cold damage, and that's not a bad thing.
Just my opinion, of course. -
I just wish they'd match up the resist bonuses as they did with the defense bonuses.
And then scale the resist bonuses appropriately, considering that 2% resistance has roughly the same value as 1% defense. -
When I rubberband -
"Where the hell am I?"
"Corners are HARD!" -
This costume works for me.
I know that it will look better on film than during some snap photography on location. -
Quote:Well, Dur, you say you don't want to die young...Ok let's see if I can answer these
whichever person posted that post with yellow topic parts, didn't catch the name, thank you. That will be most helpful along with who posted groceries express.
2 issues were brought up about what I've been saying.
#1. About "wanting" to lose weight. Quite frankly I could care less about losing the weight itself. I don't "want" to lose weight. I want to prevent myself from dying and get healthier than I am now. I mean I could just fast for a week, eat something, fast again, or become bulimic if my goal was just to lose weight.
#2. When I give a reason as to why I can't do something, such as, I probably can't to the pool, is not an excuse. I am a realist. As pointed out there is no point doing something if it is not a life style change to some degree as it will either not do anything, cause damage, or whatever i do work out for that short period will just come back and because of that if I know something isn't going to happen because of some other factor I have to realize that even though it would be best to do that it can't happen so I shouldn't focus on it, letting me focus on something i can change. Mainly these problems that seem to be just excuses come from transportation, transportation issues arise from a personal issue that I'm not going to talk about. Let's just say there is no guarantee i could get to a place or get back with any regularity. I nearly failed 9th grade because of this problem and it still persists to this day so >.>
I am looking into the recumbent bike thing, and thinking about where i could put it/use it. A work out bench, while I could get one, cost wise, there is nohere in the house that I could place it that i could use it.
The reason I said that about my diet in my first post was because again I have to deal with trying to get the food as well as a place to put it. So I more or less just go with the easiest thing to do to not have to deal with that stress.
The reason for my rotating sleep schedule is 1 of 2 things or both. When I was younger to deal with **** I switched to a night schedule so I didn't have to deal with it. Night is nice and quiet, cool, and relaxing and I would not wake during the day if i had the choice, but to get work or take classes or deal with others i have to be awake during the day. So I'm hardwired to sleep during the day at this point and I constantly move back towards that paradigm. The other explanation which it could be is that I'm one of the few people that operate on a longer day cycle so because I'm operation on say a 36 hour cycle my body wants to stay up 28 hours and sleep 8... all of the above doesn't really work in modern society.
As a cane/walker whatever tried, doesn't help.
As far as seeing a doctor/chiropractor about it. I've had x-rays taken and such and that's how i know what is happening. I also used to go to a chiropractor and it helped for maybe several days after i went, but there were problems with transportation again, and ultimately i think it did more harm than good, but i'm not sure. I did fall in the shower last year and came down hard on my *** and my back felt better for a week or so...and then i tried to work out/help some people and then it went right back to normal so even if it were to make it feel better temporarily I don't think it would work if i took up some sort of work out schedule and I think the weightloss itself would do much better than a chiropractor.
...but you're not willing to take any steps that will change that.
I'd say pick up a pack of smokes next time you're at the store. Might as well.
I hate to say this, but if you keep doing what you are doing, you will die young. Look in the mirror and tell yourself, "I will be dead in 15 years unless I control my own life."
If you can live with that, stop worrying and do what you're doing.
If not, then start changing things.
I want to help you, and there is a lot of great advice in this thread. The problem is within yourself, and you are the only one with the power to change it. But until you do, you're wasting our time. -
Quote:To be fair- only the first of Nemesis Staff or Blackwand gets the origin bonus. If you have the vet reward that grants both, you still only get one that hits really hard. There's already a few very minor advantages to certain origins. If you're Trick Arrow, magic or tech origin will let you light your Oil Slick. If you're natural, both the Nemmie Staff & Blackwand will do more damage, istead of one or the other. I've rolled my last few toons as natural, stretching the concept a bit on one of them, to get the slightly extra bonus damage useful for low levels. If the advantages were any greater, I'd pretty much toss concept out the window and roll whatever was most advantageous (or just fit my concepts around whatever the best origin was). So yeah, another vote against, since I like varying up my toons' concepts.

I get the feeling that getting Smite to recharge in .83 seconds is going to be a tough project, Bill.
-
The typical way of including damage procs in DPS calculations is to take the damage, multiply by the chance for, and add to the base damage. Therefore, a Hecatomb proc does 107.1 damage times 0.33 chance to fire, or 35.343 damage added to that of Shadow Punch.
-
Or, to put it another way, a chance that they will do nothing and be detoggled versus a chance they won't hit you.
-
Quote:Oh, that build exists, and it was cheap.I'd like to see this 20 million build.
Unless you mean something like "started with 20 million, then played the market with it".
To be fair, it did use some interesting power picks to do it. Six slotted Presence pool taunts and the like. -
I've played in Mids with my primary tank, Inv/Fire/Pyre.
As near as I can tell, I will have no need for my second build. I have a primary build which eschews the Fighting pool, and has about 80% global recharge. Good enough for most content. My secondary build has softcapped S/L/E/N, but no pyre epic, and does a lot less damage.
In I19, I'll be able to rock 77.5% global recharge, use the fighting pool to cap my smash/lethal resistance, have 44.5% S/L defense and 30+% E/N/F/C with one foe in invincibility, and have the pyre mastery powers I want.
I can have my cake and eat it too. -
Classes I cannot play? Well, I'll list what I have no 50s of, and go from there.
PB/Warshade - Just don't feel them. My PB is 37, despite being created the day they were made available. I don't have a Warshade - I think I've played one up to ten before deleting it.
Corruptor - Just never really had a concept. Highest was 28 before deletion.
Brute/Stalker - Never really found a combo that clicked for either AT. Highest Brute is 22, highest Stalker is 16 or so.
SoA - Don't have one at 50 yet, but I do enjoy playing them.
I only have one each of blaster, defender and controller at 50. The controller is the only one I still play actively.
I love tanks, and I really think that scrappers and dominators are the best designed archetypes. The MM is an oddball, and I'm considering starting another one. -
I'll put in a vote for the old Infocom game Trinity.
