  1. You just know that some time from now, I'll have a mysterious FF/ on my team that I won't know much about, and I'll get a /tell from an Empath who'll be all like "hey, do you have room?" and I'll tell the FF/ "sorry man, I have to kick you to make room for healz" and the FF/ will be like "As you wish".

And then I'll be like :O

The secret of the drop rates 'does exist' whether the Devs are aware of the numbers or not, the data is somewhere and could be interpreted to improve a players chances of getting a purple
There's a bit of a leap between "nothing is truly random, there is a reason behind every event" and "the things that I can observe connected to an event are always the reason behind that event".

If I flip a coin at 10:25 PM on a cloudy Sunday while wearing a blue shirt and it comes up tails, there is obviously a great many factors that went into the coin landing tails up - the initial velocity and spin that I gave the coin, the pull of the Earth's gravity on the coin, the millions and millions of gas praticles in the air that it brushed against on its way, the particular qualities of the table surface it finally hit. But since the only things I can reliably observe are the time of day, the weather and the color of my shirt, does that mean I should draw the conclusion that the result of the coin flip is a combination of the time, weather and shirt color? Does that mean that somewhere there is a list of what times/weather patters/clothes cause which result on a coin flip?

There are three different Rogue Morality missions, one in the 20-30 range, one in 30-40, one in 40-50. If you're doing all your morality swapping on 40+ characters, you will only ever see the last one.

A Rapture-type zone wouldn't actually be underwater, just a Lab map with occasional ocean-view windows. ...which might be pretty cool, actually, but people would still complain that it's 1) recycled geometry and 2) not actually underwater.

Yes, it tends to be used for many things including "annoying character added to existing cast", "obvious stand-in for author", and "female character I don't like".

For the same reason you don't want to go to a stand-up comedy act and see a guy who just stands there on stage with a large flashing large sign overhead that says "THIS GUY IS HILARIOUS. YOU SHOULD ALL LAUGH."
  7. Mary Sue is more about bad writing than bad character design. In the same way that calling eyes "emerald orbs" isn't bad because eyes can't be green, but because "emerald orbs" is a freakin' stupid phrase to use for "eyes", Mary Sue isn't about some particular feature the character has, but about the way they're handled. The single defining trait of a Mary Sue is:

A character who is meant to draw all attention to themselves, at the expense of plot and all other characters.

So, bad things don't happen because the plot demands it, bad things happen so that the Mary Sue can show off. Other characters are props who have no life and no purpose beyond praising/opposing Mary Sue. Her hair/eye/skin color, abilities, pets and so on are all there to draw attention to her.

You can easily write Statesman as a character who is at the center of the CoH universe, where every mission is along the lines of "investigate the evil cult discovered by Statesman" and "fight of the group of Arachnos who are after Statesman". And it's equally possible to write Statesman as an interesting character in a bigger plot, making his immortality and invulnerability have real downsides that play into the large themes of the work (troyhickmantroyhickmancommongrounds).

I hope they put in an incredibly awesome new Arena PvP mode with lots of new maps and various goals like capture-the-flag or escorting a slow-moving bomb and guaranteed PvP IO drops for everybody.

And then put a button in City Hall that when clicked, disables this PvP mode for everyone on the server for five minutes.

And when PvPers complain that someone is always sitting there obsessively pushing the button to keep the awesome new PvP mode closed, the Devs would be like "Well we hoped it would give you an incentive to go over there and talk to the person in City Hall and, y'know, roleplay and try to convince them to stop clicking the button. Roleplaying is fun, you should try it!"
  9. Okay, so here's what happened in my dream last night:

I somehow found my way to some sort of seedy forum (all black text on white backgrounds) where people were reposting screenshots from the I20 Beta. Everyone was praising how well the game looked now, but many complained that their computers could no longer run the game smoothly. I was really curious, so I clicked on a promising-looking link that said "snow is scary now!". I was expecting some sort of high-res picture of the Winter event, but instead it was a screenshot of a simplified map of Northern America with white stripes that may have been clouds or snowdrifts. Dynamic weather, you guys!

I wanted to click on a few more links but then I woke up.
  10. Are you allowing yourself to use WW to store salvage? Or base salvage racks only?

That's a LONG list to scroll through if I want to get to, say, the Circle of Thorns or Vindicator logo, or a "physical" chest piece like Vanguard armor.

    2. For pieces that have a mask (armor plate, alpha, flak jacket, etc.) have that mask FIRST on the list, not last! Especially with a long list of patterns!
Dunno if you've noticed, but the list wraps around - so if you're at the first item, pressing the left arrow takes you to the last one. That's what I always use to get to the Veteran emblems and physical chestpieces, and the mask pattern.

I mean some of the rooms are the same, maybe slightly different, but each and every map of the same type uses the same room elements. Like office buildings always have the same x number of rooms used over and over.

What it looks like to me is that the devs had/have a tool that they can place rooms on to create a map. Then of course, once made, a map remains static to be used again and again. But what if they took this map creation tool and put it in the game, so that every office/warehouse/sewer you go to, when you walk in the front door, the map is randomly generated from these room elements? Then instead of having maybe 20 maps per tileset, you would have virtually an infinite number of possible maps. (And for the grognards out there, maybe have an option "Random Maps ON/OFF" in options.)

When I was new, I didn't know what would be around any given corner. But now that I can recognize the maps, I know what to expect where. But an on-the-fly map generation ability would extend the life of this game considerably, IMO. And it should be so easy to incorporate into the game. And then, after that, why not change the AE system to use either the canned maps or add a map creator so that players can create their own maps?
The thing is, those maps would still be put together out of the same few tiles. And most people agree that it's not so much the overall map layout that's repetitive, it's the fact that when you take one look at each map tile, you already know where everything is.

Really "new" maps would need not just new ways of rearranging the map tiles, but all-new map geometry. Which someone would have to design, someone would have to model, it would have holes in it that need to be found and plugged... It is not at all a trivial undertaking.
  17. You have definitely identified one of the major weaknesses of CoH. Even the people who can overlook it and for whom it's not a deal-breaker (which includes almost everyone who plays and posts on the forums) will admit it's a weakness.

I don't want to sound dismissive, but this is not something that's likely to change any time soon. There are too many instanced missions in this game and not enough artists on the devteam to give each mission a map with unique geometry. If it bothers you that much after just one month of playing, chances are this is a game you're not going to enjoy long-term.

Mid-level (drops from enemies levels 25-40) common salvage sells for a minimum of 10-50k on the market. You can make *millions* from some recipes in the 30-35 range. This is because supply is low while demand is high - cut down the supply and you get even *higher* prices. Bad idea.
  19. I'm planning on creating some hero and villain characters and turning off their XP gain at 9 or 14 to be able to open the Atlas Park and King's Row Mayhem/Safeguard perpetually, and offering access to those Exploration badge for Praetorians.

Has anyone made or is interested in making similarly purposed characters? If there is enough interest, perhaps we could put together a centralized list of those characters, what servers they're on and what times they're available?
  20. It probably doesn't help that it says there is such a badge right on the ParagonWiki page for Alignment.

What exactly am I supposed to be clicking on to call the other side? Just so I know whether it's me being stupid or the game.....
You have to wait until the mission description gives you that "Those who are truly loyal to X side would call Scott/Marchand at this point" line, and *then* use the "call" button for the appropriate guy in the Contacts menu.

I've never been contacted by the underground, and thus have never had the option to go undercover.
If you stay a Loyalist all the time, you can still do the Warden Resistance storyarcs - Marchand will not direct you to them, but you can find them and do their arcs on your own. Some of the missions will give you an opportunity to call Marchand.

If you want to go "deep undercover", run a Loyalist arc until you get the solo mission where you can pick Loyalist or Resistance, and pick Resistance. Your alignment changes to Resistance, and Calvin Scott calls you, but Marchand remains a contact on your list. Now Calvin Scott will send you to Resistance contacts, and you will sometimes get the option to call Marchand and sabotage whatever plan the Resistance has (even the Crusader arcs).
  24. I'm fairly sure it was mentioned... somewhere that the IDs of the Freedom Phalanx are all public (to give a sense of transparency and accountability). I can't remember where, though. Possibly in the books or comics.
  25. My Praetorian is a sadistic, thoroughly evil, completely amoral character whose only goals are 1) ensure own survival and 2) cause as much suffering as possible. With any other character Praetoria would have been incredibly depressing, but with her, it's been a blast. At first she was a Loyalist, but has since switched to helping out the Crusaders with whatever absolutely necessary puppy-kicking they want to do today - occasionally sabotaging their plans with a quick call to Marchand, just for the lulz.
