  1. Very clever! Thanks for sharing this.
  2. I made a Force Field/Dark Blast defender and colored all of her powers bright pink to represent her mutant ability of "bubblegum manipulation".

    Her name? Bubble Yumi.

Oh, and her Praetorian counterpart (named Sweet Tooth) has similarly colored powers, but she's a Demons/Dark mastermind. If only we could color the henchmen... :-p
  3. Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to read through all this and to offer your suggestions and feedback. I don't like the idea of ignoring very important (some even say "defining") powers within a set and I *do* want to have the bonuses from Rooted and Granite... I just really don't want to have yet another Stone Armor toon that I ditch soon cuz I can't stand the slowness. I really am taking it all into consideration (cuz really, no one wants an unfun toon) and here's where I stand right now:

•On one build I'll go without Rooted, but I'll take Acrobatics (at lvl 22). I'll make sure I take out mezzers first (which is what I do anyhow, especially when I'm on a team, but when I play a melee toon and jump into a fight, my focus is usually to hit whatever is closest to me first and let the rest come to me).

•On my second build, I *will* take Rooted (at lvl 22) and I'll use a macro/bind to switch between Ninja Run (or Combat Jumping) and Rooted. Hopefully I won't get hit very often between activations of Rooted. It just feels odd for me to run into a group, get aggro, THEN turn on a toggle. Just seems really bass-ackwards to me. What I'm *really* not looking forward to are those instances where an enemy runs just barely out of your melee range... so you have to take 2 steps before you can attack them. But in that situation, having Rooted on makes those 2 steps feel like 20.

Both builds will eventually get Granite, I think, mostly as a "panic button" as Charnage mentioned (and for those times when Rooted isn't recharged when I need it).

Currently, the toon is lvl 17 (sporting newly slotted lvl 20 IOs) and workin' his way through Praetoria (as a Resistance Crusader). Eventually he'll exit to Paragon City and then become a Vigilante.

I've had a number of moments already where I'm surprised at being knocked back (something I'm not used to experiencing on a melee toon) or had forgotten to toggle Mud Pots back on after getting stunned and thought "Man, I wish I had Unyielding!" :-p I've played Invulnerability (twice), Shield Defense, Dark Armor (paired with Spines for ultimate togglemania!), Willpower, and Energy Aura all to 50 and I'd really like to find a way that works well enough for me to be able to add Stone Armor to that list.

Thanks again for all of your thoughts and ideas on this, guys. Very much appreciated.

What does stone have that fits your concept that cannot be achieved with any of the other defensive sets?
My concept is simply this: "a melee toon with kinetic and earth powers." That is all. Rooted isn't going against my concept. I just don't like the thought of dealing with the speed penalty. And he's a mutant, so having a stone shield doesn't really fit as well as body armor does.

The rest of what you said is correct. No IO sets. No Teleport. A stone armor toon shouldn't be *required* to use those things in order to be playable and fun.

And I'd still like to hear an answer to my earlier question: Since Granite is a toggle (as opposed to a click with a crash, as I thought it was), I'm much less opposed to taking it, but I have to ask: What's the point of having *any* other Stone powers if you can just run with Granite on constantly? What's the drawback of it, other than the damage and movement debuffs?
  5. @EarthWyrm: Thanks for the reminder about Mud Pots. I had forgotten that offensive togges DO get detoggled by mez effects.

Regarding why I asked for feedback, I *am* very interested in hearing what other players have to say about this idea. I don't want to do something that's going to completely bone my build, but I need to find a way to keep this toon playable and not be annoyed by the its detriments. My concept is Kin/Earth... specific powers aren't factors in the concept, so there's no conflict between Rooted (or any other powers in the set) and the concept.

What are the binds that you use? In all my years of playing, I haven't done much with them myself, but if they can help make the toon more survivable and retain the fun-factor, I'm up for trying them.

@Goshnova: I've considered dealing with toggling Rooted on and off between spawns, but it just seems like too much of a hassle. There's always the chance of being mezzed right as you leap into a group, before the power activates. Other annoyances with that system are having to chase running mobs or needing to (quickly) get closer to an ally who's taking too much aggro (and out of taunt range). All that detoggling, waiting for the power to recharge, and retoggling seems like too much micromanagement to me. I just wanna be able to jump in and start swinging, not jump in and fortify defenses. I also do quite a bit of soloing, so having a build that requires me to have a teammate with SB is out of the question.

Regarding Granite Armor, yes, I thought it was a click power (it was quite awhile back, wasn't it?) that turned off all of your other toggles (which you'd have to turn back on once Granite wore off). Since Granite is a toggle, I'm much less opposed to taking it, but I have to ask: What's the point of having *any* other Stone powers if you can just run with Granite on constantly? What's the drawback of it, other than the damage and movement debuffs?

    1. The set fits the toon concept. (This reason trumps all others, really.)
    2. It's a set I've never played very long (for previously listed reasons).
    3. I don't hate the set. There are just powers in it that I don't particularly agree with so I'm attempting to play it *my way*. I'm sure other players have problems with other powers in other sets. This set is just the one that gives me the most trouble every time I try playing it.

Ah right. I did forget about the supression aspect. But that's still preferable to completely detoggling. As for my skill of popping insps... I hope you're right too. :-p

    • Immobilize
    • Endurance Drain Resistance
    • Defense Debuff Resistance
    • +100% Regeneration
Rooted does not just protect you from being mezzed, it also protects you against enemies that can drain your endurance. Rooted also doubles your base regenaration.

On top of that, Rooted adds to your Defense Debuff Resistance. What that means is that enemies that debuff your defense have to work even harder to take that defense away.

Lets say you have 10 points of defense, and no defense debuff resistance.
If somebody hits you with an attack that removes 4 points of defense, you only have 6 points of defense left.

If you have 10 points of defense, and 50% defense debuff resistance
If somebody hits you with an attack that removes 4 points of defense, their attack will only be half as effective, and you'll have 8 points of defense left.

This is CRITICAL on Stone Armors because the set, up until granite, is all about Defense. The only native smashing / lethal resistance is stone skin... and that's um... what? 14% resistance if you cap it into ED?

Now, you might not like the fact that Rooted has that speed decrease. Well, it's there because it's the trade-off for getting such an amazing power that does so many other things really well.
Yep, I'm well aware of what I'll be missing out on. It just doesn't justify the massive speed penalty to me.

I'll probably skip Granite Armor too. I've never taken a tier 9 defense power and my tanks/brutes have played just fine. Those "buffing then crashing & detoggling" powers just don't fit my playstyle.

Oh that's another thing I disliked about the standard Stone builds... having to add slots to Swift is something I've never done and really don't wanna do.

Also, I slot my builds these days with standard Invention-Origin enhancements. I don't deal with the IO sets anymore. And from what I've read, IO sets are pretty much required to help get a rooted build out of the mud (so to speak).
  10. For my first post-GR toon, I've made a Kinetic Melee/Stone Armor brute... and I don't plan on giving him Rooted.

In the past, every time I've tried playing a stone tank/brute, I stop playing the toon very soon after they get Rooted. I just can't stand the speed penalty and I strongly dislike the idea of being "forced" to take Teleport as a travel power... with any build.

So, I'll be skipping Rooted. My toon will be a Super Jumper and he'll have some Immobilization resistance from Combat Jumping, some Sleep resistance from Health, and at lvl 22 he'll get Acrobatics, which will protect him from Holds and Knockback. He'll be vulnerable to Stuns, but since those don't drop toggles anymore (and since he'll have above average defense from said toggles), I don't think it'll be much of a worry. I can just keep a few Break Frees on hand at all times.

I'm very curious to see how much of a difference it'll make in the build. Out of the 10 base ATs, over half of them don't have access to ANY status protection toggle powers until their mid 40s (in their epic/patron pools). IMHO, no toon is *required* to have status protection in order to be fun to play and having my mobility unhindered will definitely increase the playability of this toon for me.

So now... who here thinks this is a horrible, HORRIBLE idea? :-p If anyone has tried an unrooted build before, I'd love to hear about it so I know what I'm getting myself into.

    Thanks!
  11. 10 minutes ago, I was able to get past the login screen, but every server was grayed out and unselectable. Now when I try to log in, I either see that behavior or I get the generic "cannot connect to db server" error.

  13. Mega Gratz, Pointless! I hope the two of you have a long, happy (and gaming-filled) life together!

My wife and I met through our mutual interest in CoH over 4 years ago and we got married on January 15th, 2010. Several of our awesome supergroup buddies even made the trip across the country to attend the wedding!

Thank you, City of Heroes, for helping me find my soulmate and best friend, my wife.

    I love you, babe!

  16. I just hit this. Been 10 minutes and my character is still logging off.

    No "More"

Also, I'd really like to be able to go INTO the Zig prison for a couple reasons:

Simple errand missions where you "interrogate" (click on) a prisoner in their cell (or maybe a guard on duty) to get info from them.

There could be a new "prison break" zone event in Brickstown where you have to enter the prison and stop the riots.

Just seems like a waste NOT to utilize a building that completely dominates the zone.

    No "More"

    Individual living quarters.

Several other MMOs allow their players to purchase and maintain personal living quarters and I'd love to see them added to the City Of universe.

Let every character pick from the many tall, residential buildings in the game (or, if they so choose, from any unused building no matter what condition it's in!) and let that buliding's main entrance door take that character to their very own apartment to customize, remodel, and decorate with items purchased from static lists as well as unlockable items and items made with salvage/recipes.

Sure, there are SG bases to decorate, but not every character is in an SG. And even those who are still deserve to have a space of their very own to call home when they don't have the tights on.

I thing it would really add alot to the immersion of the game if you could watch the city skyline through the windows of your own personal living space (similar to the way you can still see the surrounding zone while in the Architect building). Then you click your front door... and you're outside the main building entrance, ready for action.

And it could turn some unused buildings into furniture stores, antique shops, etc... All new places for you to spend that hard earned influence/infamy on stuff for your home.
  20. Count me proudly among the mass of fans who love this game and appreciate the hell out of the devs who spend so much time on it!

    Thank you all!

  21. About a week ago, my friend's game crashed when she was choosing whether or not to enter the hero tutorial. After that, that character slot became invalid and she could not log that character into the game, but a day later, the game allowed her to delete that character.

Now, in the past week, my friend has had the following happen to 4 of her characters on Pinnacle:

While zoning (either between zones or when exiting from a mission), she crashes, and after relaunching the game, she tries to log in the same character, but the game freezes after she clicks "Enter Paragon City". Then she gets an error message that states "No map server connection."

While this is happening on her side, her characters show up as online to me in our SG roster, but she never displays as online in my global friends list.

This never happened before the i16 upgrade, but now she is locked out of using at least 4 of her characters and is afraid of logging on any more.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

    Please help her.

  22. Good points brought up by everyone. Tnx for the feedback.

Regarding the badges for teams... what if there were team badges for everyone instead of specifically for leaders? What if, when the "Mission Complete!" text appears onscreen, a little window popped up for each player to rate each of their teammates (on the current team roster) on a scale of 0 - 5 stars... And when a player receives a total of X stars they would get "team player" type badges? If you don't want to deal with rating your fellow players after every mission, there can be an option to disable the window from appearing.

  23. I have an idea for a set of badges you acquire for spending X amount of time as the leader of a team. The badges could even require you to be the leader of a team of 8 and complete X number of missions. I'd just really like to see some rewards for the people who know what they're doing when it comes to organizing a team and keeping everyone on task.

And on the other side of that coin, I think it would also be cool to see a set of badges for completing X number of missions while NOT being on a team. Give a little something to all those lone wolves and anyone else out there who just can't seem to find a good team... but still play their missions as best they can.

  24. Is there an existing list somewhere online that breaks up the powersets within Mission Architect by critter rank & difficulty?

It would be helpful to be able to plan critter powersets when I'm not at my home PC where the game is installed.
