Quote:So you're saying that the RWZ is now like St. Martial, Grandville, Founders' Falls, Brickstown and Peregrine Island. (Except for the co-op aspect.)I really don't see the point in opening up the RWZ for lowbies. It's like saying "Look at all this neat stuff you can do! But you have to be level 35 to do ANY of it, now go do something else and don't come back until you're level 35."
Well, sure you can team with friends there, but why not just go and team up with people who are closer to your level?
How... shortsighted of the Devs to do this. -

Quote:That was my thought as well. The newer Cybermen of course: humans surgically* converted into mind-controlled cyborg slaves, not the originals who were actually a militaristic alien species of cyborgs. So metas who fail their indoctrination are converted into organic power and control systems for the Praetorian Clockwork. As are any family members who opt to join their 'traveling' relatives.*looks at thread title line*
*looks at Techbot Alpha*
hmm...why do I get the feeling...
so these Clockwork are Praetorian Cybermen?
*whips up a hot cocoa; pulls up a chair*
Interesting, tell me more...
(Reminds me of a Changeling game where anyone who attracted the ire of the Redcaps 'went to Florida'. Or at least that's what we'd say whenever anyone asked, 'Whatever happened to _____?')
*Basically the brain and possibly a few organs scooped out and installed into a cybernetic body to function as the computer system. Lots of controls to limit emotions and self-awareness. Cybermen who recover full awareness tend to go mad from the trauma and horror of what's been done to them. -

Quote:Nah. Myrmydon stepped in as tank, so i used my Defender.lol well you didn't have any big shoes to fill :P just mine hah
Did you get to tank?
Then my graphics card went tits-up during the mission against Malta in Talos Island. Actually, the issues with CoH crashing immediately after zoning make more sense now that the card went and died.
So, i might not be on for a day or two. Just grabbed a card that might do the job, will check when i get home. If not i'll probably just order all the parts for the new system i was already shopping around for. -
Quote:Parking fees can be huge. As long as it can be retrieved later i'm okay with the weightless tumbling. (Though if i was in Paragon i'd be driving an indestructible* electric/fusion car, so the lack of gravity wouldn't be as messy as it could be for a standard internal combustion engine.)I somehow don't feel that "your vehicle will tumble in a weightless, endless void for all times" is a better alternative to the common parking metre.
*The indestructible option is apparently standard for Paragon cars while being driven; it's just when you park them that they can get broken. A weightless void where violence is proscribed is the perfect parking solution. -
Quote:AFAIK this was not covered at Hero Con, but what happens when a rogue or vigilante enters a PvP zone? With so much info being laid out so quickly at HeroCon, I figured I'd take an opportunity to clarify a lot of confusing points. My apologies for not being more clear when we first explained them.
- Heroes can become Vigilantes which can then become Villains
- Villains can become Rogues which can then become Heroes
- Thus the circle is Hero->Vigilante->Villain->Rogue->Hero
- This system is usable by any character over X level (X is a number which has yet to be disclosed). It is not "just for Praetorians".
- A Hero can go all the way to Villain and then back to Hero again, if they put in enough effort.
- Praetorians do not use the normal GR system, but have points within their stories where they can choose "Loyalist (aka Villain)" or "Resistance (aka Hero)"
- When Praetorians leave Praetoria for Primal Earth, they choose if they want to be considered a Hero or a Villain, and are plopped into Paragon or the Rogue Isles.
- A Vigilante (Rogue) can travel to the Rogue Isles (Paragon City), and can team up with the Villains (Heroes) there. They can not use the markets while they are there however. They must be a full Villain (Hero) to use the markets.
Pretty sure that covers the info we gave out, including clarifying answers we gave on various panels over the weekend, and answers to specific questions we were asked by players.
Since it sounds like those in the grey area can run content for both factions, do you decide which faction to align with when entering a faction-aligned PvP zone, or do rogues and vigilantes just go all Warburg in all the PvP zones? -
Well crap. Looks like i'll have to miss the end of the TF. My graphics card died during the Malta mission. As in screen went black, ended up having to shut the system down and when i rebooted after cleaning out the fans and checking the connections i restarted the system to see all sorts of lovely pixelization and broken graphics during the OS loading screen. *bleah*
Posting this from a roomie's PC. i doubt i'd be able to get CoH installed and running in time for the end even though it should be able to run CoH. -
Quote:Didn't VPP first appear in the Champions III supplement, which came out in '83/'84? So you made your character around '82? Hmmm...I agree. I have to note, however, that the character was created before Variable Power Pools (which I regarded as cheating). Even so, I'm not sure a system couldn't be devised that used somethign similar to what Champions had. Again, though, that's a topic for a different thread.

Quote:No, no, i said i have a tank...Hate to say it, but something's come up tonight so I won't be making it.
Not to worry, Nyx can tank!
Hmmm, well, let's see how this shakes out. If i tank we'll want another support AT with this many squishies. Or i can stay on my Defender and we can find a replacement tank. Whichever.
Edit: Boomkitty is more of an extremely annoying scrapper who makes all the enemies hate her. Sure she spams taunt and attacks like crazy, but is not exactly the most refined at the art of tanking. Adequate at that specific function is probably a better characterization. -

Quote:Most mystic masters in Champions pnp used variable power pools for the "whatever i can think of" magic, and only used multipowers for much higher-powered, commonly used bread and butter offense, defense and utility spells. In fact i believe it was the Mystic Masters supplement that gave some of the best examples of this, including using variable power pools to add naked advantages (if i recall the terminology) to the multipower slots with GM permission. Actually, the lack of a GM being able to make judgment calls for every player's character design and use of their powers is one of the reasons an open character/power design system like the Hero System is not feasible in current MMO's. You'd need something that approached real AI to referee each player, something not currently possible.I'm not sure why that would be a negative thing, but at least you bring it up publicly so it could be discussed.
As for it, the point was that he was a wizard and capable of many things, just not all at once. The Multipower fit that well.
Anyhoo, wandering off topic...
Anyway, moving on... -
Quote:Just got off a 20's team on Champion. Spent most of the time GM hunting and ToT'ing for about 3 hours. During that time the team size fluctuated between 5 and 8, with it being a team of 7 most of the time. We probably would've stayed at 6 most of the time if it wasn't for people sending tells LFT. The core membership (usually about 5 as people joined and left occasionally) was mostly people that knew each other from BMT of Champion, Alliance and Pingu channels or global friends. Then I must not be in Champs?! I am redside, I think I a doomed to be alone...trust me...Redside champs is lonely..
It's harder to get a redside team going on Champion without using global channels, but not bad at all with them. -

Quote:Don't you ever get any positive rep?And I'll continue to do so as long as certain childish dickwads feel they can get their little boost of anonymous self-esteem at my expense. As I said, I turned off rep so I wouldn't have to put up with it.
Since I'm being forced to put up with it, I will use the only means of responding I have available to me.
(And this required yet another negative point, illustrating again how ridiculous the rep system is)
Edit: i also don't understand why you're "being forced to put up with it". i personally rarely look at the rep comments, and then only when the whim strikes me, so i have no idea why you feel forced to do so.
(Of course the natural human urge is to rebut or counter negatives and accept positives as normal; and positive rep doesn't require leaving a comment, so it's more likely to be left blank when positive....)
Moving on... i hope you stripped out immobilize enhancers in your new build. No immobilize power really needs them to be effective or for stacking IMO. Those that can easily ignore most immobs are better hit with holds anyway. Stamina is great for turning more arduous combinations of sets into fun builds. -
Quote:Yes, reducing resistance means they take more damage and reducing enemy damage is good for the ones who don't miss. That said, as long as you stay solo and on base difficulty it isn't really all that necessary. For me it would be since by level 22 (i usually put it off EF until after getting Stamina) i generally start cranking up the settings a bit.Well, I've decided to stick with the Controller. Two things have happened that have influenced me. First, I took the excellent advice of the people here, and added Radiation Infection. Second, I got to L20 and Stamina. My, what a difference.
Now, as I proceed into the real life of the character (L20-40), I wonder why Enervating Field is considered so valuable? It reduces enemy damage, which is already mitigated by Radiation Infection, and it reduces Resistance. Is this latter half really so valuable?
Quote:Lingering Radiation is one I'll probably leave out of the solo build, though I can see it being useful in teams, since that's really the only time I'd be facing foes with high regeneration (AVs, GMs). Does this sound reasonable?
Again, thanks to all! -
My suggested build to 19. (20 would be Stamina, of course.) Only slotted with DO's, since it's trivial to get enough funds blueside for a full set with basic selling of salvage on the market, no actual marketeering skill or time required.

Level 2: Rest -- Empty(A)
Level 1: Containment
Basic tactics: Pick a lt., hit with Crush followed by RI. Hit everyone with CF. Hit another with Gravity Distortion. Hit yet another with Propel. Refresh CF. Hit the RI anchor with Crush if CF misses and he starts to run. Otherwise just cycle attacks ignore the anchor until the rest are defeated.
Unless you're playing at higher settings or on a team that generally means 2 to3 at a time for the most part. The same tactics should easily work on groups of 6 or more by using terrain to control LoS, so two spawns close together shouldn't be an issue if it happens.
Those tactics and powers alone will work until the late 20's at least, and even to 50 in most cases. Now assorted phase and stealth powers are available as temp powers both through the market, as mission rewards for some arcs, slotting a stealth IO and by running patrols in PvP zones, but even if taking the stealth pool is necessary for peace of mind i'd suggest waiting until the mid-20's at least.
Well, that's how i'd probably solo a Grav/Rad. YMMV
Edit: revised build slightly. -
i was more puzzled by the 6-slotting of Quantum Shield... Then again i don't slot IO's until SO levels at least. At that point 6-slotting means the last 3 slots offer a minuscule amount more resistance, so basically a near complete waste of 3 slots on an AT that's usually slot-starved. ((0.o))

Quote:i take it then that you're using two accounts with the Defender simply being a buff-bot? In that scenario of course the pure mitigation-boosting Defender (if played in a passive support role) is a drag on performance. Defenders get two powersets for a reason, and sets like FF are not designed around boosting the overall effectiveness of a single player, but increasing the survivability of a whole team while leaving plenty of room to attack. When dual-boxing, sets like Empathy make a lot more sense to play as largely passive support. In any event, if you're playing your Defender as a nursemaid who hangs back and passes out energy drinks and band-aids as needed, then (IMO) you're doing it wrong.Just a data point for what has become a discussion of what do defenders bring to teams and can they be replaced by set bonuses ?
Prior to I16 I spent much of my time soloing positron on my fire/ment blaster. It was a challenge to see how fast it could be done and let me save up merits to build my toons.
My blaster is built for defense at that level. At level 15 she has about 30% ranged defense and 18 or so energy/ negative energy. I went and built a bubbler to team with her and see if I could increase the speed I was getting the tf done. It turns out that bringing the bubbler around just slowed the overall progress. 30% ranged defence and defiance was usually enough to deal with any Mez that was getting through to me on this task and the need to trade inspirations from the bubbler to the blaster just slowed things down. -
Quote:But i have some of each of those, so why would i add them in as AT's i can't currently play in RV?You forgot to add in trollers, defenders, and some time scrappers if they know what there doing.
Actually, all my high level controllers are on other servers, so i could've mentioned Controllers.
Any suggestions as to powersets? -
Gravity is one of the higher damage Controller primaries and Rad is one of the stronger secondaries, so i'm confused as to what's happening. Especially getting one or two-shotted by minions. i leveled a Grav/Storm to 50 and never had any serious difficulty soloing. Soloing was a bit slow at times, but never difficult.
What difficulty setting are you playing at? If you're having that much difficulty i'd suggest lowering enemy level to +1 at the most, and would even suggest +0 or -1 with bosses turned off if need be. Team size setting should be kept below 3 or bosses will show up anyway.
Not sure what else to suggest. For a Doctor Strange inspired hero Grav/Rad is a pretty good combo. You could also try Fire or Illusion with some creative recoloring. Force Field or Storm are other thematic secondaries IMO, but FF will reduce your damage output even more.
*hmph* Try Illusion/Rad or Illusion/Storm?
Personally i'd just stay with the Grav/Rad if already had one to middling levels. Well slotted and played Rad can do a good job of increasing damage and survivability, and as i've already mentioned, Gravity does a good amount of damage for a Controller primary.
Edit: Rad/Dark Defender could be quite Doctor Strange-ish. Good damage, lots of AoE potential and you can color the Dark Blasts and tentacles to look more "good". Like, say, snaring enemies with gold or green tentacles and blasting them with similarly colored blasts. -
No such thing as too many Blasters. After all we've got a Tanker and two Defenders in addition to the Blasters, and my Defender has Vengeance and Howling Twilight.
