That was the entire point of Origins. A light touch, flexible enough to allow the character's creater (ie you the player) to create anything you wanted. Hell, Scarlet Shocker is an all electric blaster of natural origin and after almost six years I still don't have a credible explanation for that one, but it just simply works! If you ask her she'll probably shrug and simply say "I somehow manage to harness the ambient electricity in the atmosphere and direct it in a meaningful way - I don't much worry about the science behind it." And during her career, she's teamed with aliens, barbarians from alternate dimensions, sentient goo in an encounter suit, mighty wizards and escaped convicts - to name but a few. Origin has been a really useful tool that you could invest as much, or as little, in as you like. But now, the Incarnate line nails you down to a very specific set of rules that limit the players imagination and ability to interact within the game environment - it's gone from the examples above to "I've got this insane puddle in my head that lends me some of its powers and though I don't trust it, or like it, I've got to go with it just to continue progressing."
  2. One of the lesser touched on inconsistencies of the Well and the game in general - but one that really grates on me - is this:

From levels 1-50, no matter your origin, you improve yourself. You get better - because your origin gives you the flexibility to create a story that fits your character whichever way you see fit. You're a robot-inventor like Techbot and you invent new gadgets and stuff to make yourself more powerful. Or you're a supereme martial artist that learns new skills as you go about your heroic villainy. Or the nanites in your blood stream enhance your abilities progressively over time... the origins as first presented work very very well.

Then you get to 50 and bang... the only way to progress is to let this insane puddle take your character over. This despite the fact that you regularly encounter enemies that are much tougher than you - Malta, Devoured Earth, Rikti, etc etc...

They don't need the Well to become more powerful - and yet, at level 50 you suddenly forget how to train, lose your invention ability, your spellbook runs out of pages... and so suddenly you are beholden to an external influence to improve your characters.

There's always the option of saying "don't play" but that misses the point - for 50 levels we've been part of a community, having fun with friends and most importantly - gaining power! So suddenly to have to make such a stark choice - well, let's just say it's a big disappoint. That disappoint is compounded by the insane sentience of the giver of power - which is why I felt compelled to retcon the story in my own head as above.

I'm not in a "rush" - this has been going on for close on six months or so - so it's hardly happening at breakneck speed anyhow.

I've never had a problem with Statesman per se, but he's rarely presented in a sympathetic way which lets us get inside him and understand him from his POV - and so he's tended to come across as an uptight stuffed shirt.

I'm also guessing that the conclusion of the Praetorian tales would be very difficult if he's still around - it would be rather difficult for us to face off against Emperor Cole in the Grand Finale if he's still around and has our back - it weakens the grandeur of the tale.

Thus, the simplest remedy is to remove him from the game as we are elevated to take his place (which presents another bunch of issues but I won't go into them here) and I'm not unhappy with that proposition.

What is to my mind totally critical is simply that his death must be completely epic and inspiring - and I don't know if there are many writers capable of pulling that off in (or indeed out) of the game - it will present a huge challenge. But it is totally necessary, because anything less for such an iconic signature of the game will cheapen the game itself - and this bothers me because from what I've seen of the WWD arc so far I'm not sure it's up to such a high mark.

I don't think I've ever been in a club that has remained the same for so long. PD definitely needs a makeover (and if it's really so secret, new access points) and change the bloody music already!!!!

No. It really isn't. The Lemon of Contradiction refutes your claim
  8. First Ward encapsulates what's wrong with the state of the game - visually it's stunning and at first look you just want to go "wow!" - but the stories take a couple of days to run through at best and leave me feeling "meh, was that it?"

I guess it's the MMO equivalent of nouvelle cuisine that's a few dishes light

I don't really like Star Trek - but I don't think it's a bad story - it's just not something that really appeals to me - I don't need to try and make up reasons why it might be a bad story to try and explain why I don't really like it - I just accept that there are loads of different styles and tastes, and that not everyone will like everything.
I also don't feel the need to tell Star Trek fans why their story "sucks".

I've seen your horse come up with better answers than that from it's rear end!

There are plenty of stories that I may not like, or feel comfortable with or just not take to - both in this game and without. That doesn't mean I actively dislike those stories or consider them bad. Mostly stories like that leave me with a sense of profound ambivalence.

But I genuinely think most of the end game story is complete stool water. It's inconsistent, gimmicky, and actually not very well written.

Not every story can be great, but equally not every story should be dreadful but many of the end games seem to end up that way - often because of cheating mechanics but also because of the borked fundamental premise.

Forcing it into incarnate lore, alignment switching, First Ward, and now Dark Astoria (which is beyond rediculous) doesn't really add anything to the meta-story of the game.

As for the Well of the Furies? Well...you know something is a bad idea storywise when the majority of the games roleplayers ignore it.

I take your point but I'd say there's a massive caveat there: IF the story was any good, people would be loving it - but sadly the whole thing seems to be built by a committee of accountants, not creative artists.

Personally I feel that since the news of GR broke what we've been experiencing is a great uplift in quality of the game in terms of graphics, powers, and mechanics, but the story has plummeted in quality at the same time.

I am constantly left totally undewhelmed by the dogpile we are given as "story" these days.

Major Kudos, SS. I liked it.
In fact, I think I'm going to treat that as something to go off for my characters now

    thanks
  14. This is something I wrote that deals with this issue. I hope you take it in the spirit of intent, rather than some sense of self-aggrandizement but this is about the only way I've managed to make the Well work for me.

I hope someone dies for real in the SSA or Im going to kill someone myself
    MUA HAHAHAHAHA!!
It would be incredibly strange if they did not honour their signature character in his passing. It would send a message to the world that actually the Devs really don't care about the characters they've invested almost a decade into.

Of course they are going to honour him - and it's a fitting tribute.

  16. I'd love to see better masks, especially and I also throw my hat in the ring for more Kirby inspired costume options - they don't call him "King" for no reason and he is one of the giants of the Gold & Silver age - from the high art costume pieces, to the classic "Kirby-dots" aura.

Also we need more "silver age weapons" like the classic 50s ray gun and jet packs

Finally... Hats and Hair need a real rework! The difficulty of fitting a hat to a character without having an inappropriate hairstyle is a big issue
  17. Good question. This is my own take on it - others will have their own contribution to make but I wanna be clear I'm not speaking for anyone else here.

The big issue with the Incarnate system stems from the fact that the power we get is somehow given to us from the Well. We didn't make a better power suit, learn to punch harder or become physically stronger or anything like that - we just happened to get the attention of some hole in the ground and it deems us worthy.

That, right there, emasculates our characters. It's not about us any more, it's about the Well and the hubris of the Dev writers who are telling their own story instead of allowing us to be the centre of our stories.

There are other huge issues about the Incarnate story, but that's the root cause for me. We're no longer autonomous within the context of the game, we're puppets.

This. iTrials caused me to cancel my sub and have spoiled the game for me with

    a) crap stories
    b) cheat mechanics
    c) horrid inconsistencies

There's a fundamental difficulty with in producing a good sequel. Generally, sequels tend to appeal most to those who are fans of the first instalment - which is invariably fewer than those who took it up initially - be it a book, a movie, a game etc.

Those who want the sequel, also want something recognisably based on the original, but with new shiny stuff added that adds to their enjoyment.

People tend to be conservative and stick with what they know and like rather than try something new, so anybody producing a sequel must provide the initial feel of the original - to take the sequel in a very different direction is to invite disaster - and it will often take a second sequel - or third instalment if you'd prefer - to undo the damage the sequel did to the original and perhaps we see a classic example of that in the Trek movies, where the odd numbered stories are considered by many superior to the even numbers, unlike say Star Wars - but that differs because the whole story was considered in the round initially.

If we take CoH as an example, other superhero games have tried to cash in on perceived weaknesses of CoH, and yet struggled to stay afloat which should tell us a lot about how difficult it is to get people into the new product. But conversely, NCSoft aren't very afraid of sequels, having one about to launch and one that sits quite neatly alongside it's predecessor so it's not impossible.

However to make it work they would have to make it something like "Nation of Heroes" set in a new location, and with new stories - but with a new engine but a "feel" of the original if not the looks. It would need to be bigger, better, and shinier and the stories would need to be a lot more engaging than the content we have now - and that's a big risk because it means a huge investment in development time to come even a little close to eight years of continuous development.

I think (I've not read the entire thread in depth) that some have already said arguably we're already around CoH2 with the end game so it could well be we'll find CoH3 coming to a console near you at some stage in the future which CoH continuing to complement it.

I guess the point here is that nobody need pay for this power if they don't want it. Travel powers have steadily been getting less and less important over time - Ninja run was the first indicator, then the lowering of the limit from 14 to... well honestly I forget because I don't often take them these days. They have been obsolete for just a few PP.

Let's just give a moments silence and remember the creators who have passed away and give thanks that the accountants still deem there is life in the old game yet
  23. Sadly I missed it but glad to know Defiant's still making it happen! Looking forward to the next one!

    Seriously?

Im all for a zone revamp like what was done for Faultline. Heck, I think -every- CoH zone needs to be revisited and given clear story arcs like how redside works. But removing things is bad.

In the 5th Year address, Positron came to Defiant server (I know, amazing) said that creating zones was as easy as revamping existing zones. What we didn't realise at the time was that GR was already into production - but that may have coloured his perspective, though I believe it's been stated on other occasions by other Devs.

This leads then to a question of quantity over quality - a lot of zones with little substance compared to fewer zones with great stories. If you look at the outstanding job they did with Fautline and War Zone revamps, that kind of gives the lie to their position - but the Hollows, maybe supports them a bit, but maybe that's simply because the Hollows was well past its sell-by date before the revamp and is having the last rites read to it even as I speak given that two or three runs on DFB means you're past its level range without breaking a sweat.

A lot of zones need a make-over - and the Rogue Isles especially. I've always believed the failing of the Isles was a place to congregate, as players, and to hang out and hold cossie comps etc - there's no Atlas equivalent in the Isles. Actually there is, but it's too high for lowbies. Make Cap au D the starting zone, open up the plaza and make Mercy the "hazard area" where villains can find slightly tougher missions. You don't need to do much to ensure that lowbies don't faceplant from the moment they start there.

Striga and Croatoa have great content but there's so much in that level range it's easy to miss them - which is a shame because the Hess TF is excellent - but needs the arc to unlock it.

Cimerora is all about the ITF. Nobody goes there to run any content - so make it possible to access it from Croatoa too... that saves on the death by boredom of rescuing Percy Winkley for the 746th time!!!!! Similarly, Terra Volta - devoid of anything except respec trials.

Talos, IP, Terra Volta and Striga could be reworked - maybe introduce Lusca, Sally and Kraken into the mix and have them stomp over the zones to require a large scale redevelopment and merge them into one zone that's slightly smaller than the sum of its parts.

Nerva and St Martial are too big for their content - they could easily combine and be made more accessible.
