  1. just a reminder of this one for this afternoon
  2. I've managed to grind my Rad/Rad crupper to 45 but despit slotting all my toggles with End redux and having slotted Stamina.

However, any scraps I get in and my blue bar just plummets and then I end up struggling to keep any toggles up.

Any clues, suggestions or tips and tricks?
  3. yeah Cal's got it. When I13 hit the axe animation stopped working and yet yesterday I noticed it working fine - but to my knowledge there's not been a patch or any fix

The problem I have with that is the constant redrawing of the sword and the gun.

If you could have them both out at the same time it would be cool but otherwise...meh...

Like the idea of the set/AT/ though.

Gun in right, sword in left?

Reasons? You're meant to entertain us!

Was thinking about the earlier Radio comments on the way home and came up with this:

A hero arrives at the Secure Criminal Insane Facility and says:

"Prepare a straitjacket, I've got another one!"

Two wardens approach with a straitjacket.

"Yes, what is it?" one of them asks.

    "This Radio is evil!"

"According to our reports, you flew over the ocean to a sovereign island state, flew down to a car park and stole someone's radio. Would you like to tell us who's insane?"

Queen's "I'm going Slightly Mad" starts to play on the radio...

Lol I think I'm gonna leave the entertainment to you

    I like the principal

Works for me. If it's an epic then it doesn't need to conform to other AT types... it can be unique.

I also like the swashbucking comicbook style... almost piratical perhaps.

Good suggestion, I'd like to see this

    Merit bubble?

I just tried 3 random rolls on the Taskforce section and 2 from the Trials

In the following order I got:

    Freebird + Stealth
    Siphon Insight: Acc/End/Recharge
Pacing of the Turtle: Chance for Recharge Slow
    Mako's Bite: Acc/End/Rech
    Aegis: End/Rech/Res

    Not bad IMO
  8. I noticed my GSA seems to be working all of a sudden. This seems to have coincided with the "secret patch that doesn't actually affect anything!" 1KB patch.

Anyone noticed anything odd with theirs?

  10. SPOILER WARNING:

If I understand things correctly you discover that you are a Destined One as you go through the arc - tho I've not completed it myself so I could be mistaken.

Personally, this is ok, a bit weak maybe, but I really wanted to play an Arachnos Agent and NOT be a "Supervillain" - I don't want to be a Destined One all the time.
  11. I like this idea

If you have a base, buy the pack. Simple as.

Seasonal packs, booster packs etc etc. Yep. It's all good. You can cherry pick
  12. I noticed that there's only one university on villains, but three on heroes.

I think there's a definite need for at least one addtional uni on villains. It's not like it's easy to get around at the best of times and having only Cap au D to learn is a bit... well frankly it's silly.

With St Martial being a massive number crunching facility with the casino etc, you'd expect them to have some input into it and Grandville would be a good candidate too.

I'm back. Told you I would be. Hehe. So, what did I miss?

Everything. I suggest slotting for Acc
  14. If you get bored wtih that, try an Elec/Elec. It's not the highest DPS, but has some good holds and has the advantage of End drain

It can be a "universal soldier" in that it's also got some good mellee and a very cool pet
  15. Crim thanks for the advice. If I ever get to Onion I'll gladly experiment and join the channel.

Gall not ever seen one of those to my knowledge but I want to build another /ment toon. I have a Psi/Ment at 50 but went from 20-50 on a DXP weekend and kinda wasted it. Might be an interesting experiment
  16. In Issues 6 (I believe) a new feature was introduced called Enhancement Diversity.

this effectively means that if you slot 3 level 50 SO enhancements (or their equivalent) you'll be as about as good as you can get. Adding a 4th will literally add 1 or 2% at best. This was designed to encourage the use of other Enhancements and prevent people 6 slotting for damage. (I joined just after so have never missed it but it was very controversial - and still is now, although I think most people agree it was basically a good thing, but very poorly handled by Cryptic, the then developers.)

So any power with more than 3 of the same type of SO/IO in - including your hasten - is basically wasted. (But as I understand things, that's not true for DOs)

As DSorrow said, IO sets do complicate things but if a set has 6 components it's fine slotting them in one power. There are some guides but the fora were recently pruned so you might want to look at things like Mids Hero Designer or some other updated build planners.

Welcome back! (you can catch me on Defiant and my global is @Riff)
  17. I'd love to see my global list and see who's online, playing what toon. It can often make a significant decision as to who I decide to get out.

Sure it's not the end of the world when I log in now, but if my buddies are teaming and I login on the wrong toon, it means we all have to wait for a minute or so before we can team up.
  18. Managed to rescue this one from the archives so reposting:

    A Treatise On Nomenclature

We are incredibly lucky in that we speak one of the richest and widest known vocabularies in human history: English. It is diverse, glorious, flexible, precise, multi-faceted and beautiful. Few other languages have such a varied lexicon, nor the ability to convey such a precise meaning with a seemingly minor variation.

It’s therefore sometimes frustrating to see the lack of imagination given to names in such an excellent game as City of Heroes and Villains, and does no credit to the game, or the progenitors of such misnomered soubriquets. With such a rich and varied panoply to conjour with, the single syllable “Donk” or “Bob” lacks a certain ‘je ne sais quoi.’ It falls flat before it begins.

It behoves us to consider the question “what’s in a name?” The answer is quite simply everything. The ancients, and some occultists even today (not to mention certain religions) believe that names are power. Even if a name isn’t of itself powerful, then it should convey a sense of the power held by the owner. This is, after all, an environment of super-beings, whether for good or ill, the denizens of this domain are blessed with awful and awesome abilities the like of which the real world has never seen, and the names of those inhabitants should reflect that. Names can (and should) describe a little bit of the owner’s talents.

Let’s go back to basics: Superman, The Fantastic Four, Batman, Spiderman… et al. They really convey what the protagonist is all about. Superman… well he’s a bit good really isn’t he? The Fantastic Four tells you all you need to know. There’s more than three, less than five and they are rather jolly splendid. Batman is a man who is also into cricket… oh wait, sorry… But you get the picture: The name carries a very important message – it is critical to the character. Spend as many hours as you want working with Sexy Jay’s finest costumery, and come up with something astounding in terms of look, with a powerset to match, but call him or her Snurflepants and the toon is gonna be in the end, well, snurflepants. The expression of the name is uninspiring and does a disservice to him that he’ll never recover from, even at 50.

But how to get that good name? Something that reflects what your characters concept is all about, his or her power sets, any past history or RP opportunities etc?

There are no “rules” but some key guidelines are as follows:

Alliteration, Colour, Puns, Personification, Metaphor and Evocation, in no specific order. (and no I don’t advocate the creation of a unique acronym just cuz.) Autonyms and Antonyms are also useful, but NOTHING beats a decent dictionary and thesaurus. Yes, the free online ones are passable but you’ll be amazed at the value either book gives you in everyday life, regardless of this game. If you value language and words, don’t skimp.

Let’s deal with the above sequentially:

Alliteration; typically means a series of two or more words, each commencing with the same letter. The Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Scarlet Shocker, Reed Richards, Peter Parker… all good examples of alliteration in the superhero genre. Its main effect is to give you something that rolls off the tongue mellifluously.

Colour: Always valuable. Stuck for a name? Stick a colour in there. Works well for the Silver Surfer (see above) the Blue Beetle, and Scarlet Shocker. Oh and guess what… gives you a nice alliterative tool too. That said, the Red Skull might tell you that he’s got a good colour and doesn’t need alliteration. Nor does the Black Knight… Or Green Lantern come to think of it. But, sticking a colour into a name gives an additional option.

Puns are a great tool, although less common in comicbookland than many other forms of names. A couple of examples I’ve conjured up are a dark/zombie MM who wears raggedy clothes. His name is Doug Graves. Or there’s the Illusion/Sonic controller called False Alarm. But the pun is that the name again gives a bit of a clue as to what they actually do.

Personification: Spiderman, Batman. ‘Nuff said. Men who take on properties similar to creatures. But be careful. The names have to evoke a sense of threat or danger. Nobody’s going to be scared of Sparrow-man or Bush-Baby (well, they might be, but for the wrong reasons.)

Metaphor is often used as a comic book hero’s strap line. Superman is the Man of Steel, Batman the World’s Greatest Detective, Hellboy; The Right Hand of Doom… etc. But if you’re stuck you could be the Deadly Diamond Dog, or Iron Mage… etc. Metaphor means you’re using a parallel to describe your character. What does your toon do? Instead of calling him “Man who does Damage by punching hard” you could call him Iron Fist or… Sure, it’s been done but you get the point.

Evocation and Metaphor are very close in result, if not concept. Metaphor means using a word that does not directly apply to describe something, such as he was built like a brick outhouse. No he wasn’t literally made from bricks but he was strong and sturdy. In a similar way the phrase build like a tank doesn’t mean somebody covered with 10cm thick boiler plate (well in City of, of course it can but let’s not go there right now) but it evokes a sense of imperviousness. Lightning quick… well lightning is pretty damned fast, but we all know what it means, as another example. Perhaps the best example of an evocative name is Dr Strange, but Quicksilver of the Flash also do what they say on the proverbial tin.

There are no hard and fast rules here. This is incredibly subjective and it finally boils down to what you want for your character – but if this small piece helps inspire you to something more imaginative than simply “Bill the Newt” then it has served its purpose.
  19. One of the few unfortunate consequences of the recent forums prune is that some excellent guides have sadly been deleted.

I've been speaking with GR and he can restore the original guide (although not the entire thread - too much work) so the question is, what guides need to be restored? GR says he can do this but he needs to know which threads we need - up to October 31st of last year.

So if you know of a guide you either wrote, or was worthy of reference, then post it here. Ideally, to do this, he needs to know the Author/Poster, the Thread Title and if possible, the posting date - this is a longshot maybe but it all helps.

If you are the author of a guide and still have the original, then simply repost - that'll save Ghost Raptor a lot of hassle.

    PVP?

    I honestly can't decide.

PVP needs something. It's not great as is, but a good PVP event is about as much fun as you can have in this game.

There does seem to be one inherent problem - that although there's a consensus that PVP isn't working properly, but hardly anyone can agree what the cure is. Nobody knows how to fix it, not even the Devs.
  21. I have enjoyed the game play on my soldier but that's after 3 goes and deciding I'm going to have to compromise on the costume options

but I've taken a slightly unusual route of taking him through to 50 as a bog-standard soldier: Just a guy with a gun and some gadgets. He's 38 now and I'm having a lot of fun, laying down impressive amounts of firepower and seems to be having a pretty good time.

When in a good team he generates a veritable sea of orange numbers which is quite a sight to behold
  22. Ok we're gonna run Synapse this weekend.

Preference given to those who came to Posi but stick your name down cuz we ended up with 2 full teams running side by side so you'll get a berth if oversubbed I'm sure

The fact is, why should Heroes and especially Villains have to pay 'rent' ?!
Heroes would earn enough to buy a suitable place, would already own something from family or friends, live in a handy alternate zone or get given a place as thanks for services rendered. Villains get it easy, they just have to smash enough heads together until they get what they want.
    Rent? puh-lease =/
