Dear Doug,
Please stop being so good. It hurts.
Sincerely,
-Say -
Mmm... I love the painterly style to this... delicious :3 Congrats on an awesome piece.
And Ironik... that's a helluva deal for a painting. Most commission prices work out to paying the artist between 2-5 dollars an hour for their time. -
You know, upon glancing back at those directions, I should probably write a tutorial on using masks for cel shading. It makes life so much easier...
-
I'm actually going to dissuade the use of BlackRevolver's tutorial. There are MUCH simpler ways to do cell shading without worrying about making selections.
To color linework, here's what I do... (with Photoshop)
1. Scan in your artwork, inked or sketch, it doesn't matter at 300dpi (color/RGB).
2. Go to Layers. Select your background layer. Right click. A display box will come up with the option to duplicate layer. Click that.
3. Select Background copy. Now you're going to go to the dropdown box under Layers. On default it's set to normal. Change the layer property to Multiply. Set on multiply means that the linework will stay intact while you color UNDER it, just like an animation cel.
4. Select your FIRST background layer again, Create a New Layer by selecting the white rectangle next to the trash can at the bottom of the layers box. You can RENAME this layer to base colors, color, whatever you like. If you would like to do shadows on the same level, that's fine. Many people simply repeat the process with creating a new layer for shadows, and another for highlights.
Hope that helps.
As for the amentioned style, it's simply an 'animated' style. I would also like to put my vote in against Christopher Hart books. You'll learn a lot more by studying the artists you like...really. -
Wulfie, you needa get more sketches up, these are fantastic :3

These are awesome! And I absolutely love the police drones XD

AAAAAAAH! YER BACK! Woo! *tacklehug!*

You know what helps with getting free art from this community is a good costume. Very nice indeed Blade
And LJ, very nice 'sketch' -
Doug, you rock. Seriously hardcore.

R.O.H.S. regulations... what are these weird fangled things? Well it means that this particular Cintiq product contains higher levels of either/or a combination of the following hazardous/toxic materials: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and/or polybrominated diphenyl.
So, really, I wouldn't want to work with one of these. The older models compiled with regulations. I'm not really sure WHY this one doesn't. -
Ah Graver... so this is your SECRET.
I used cold press because that's what I was taught on primarily, and what is best for plein air pieces. I can see how Hot Press COULD be used for plein air, but it'd dry up way too fast, and not hold up well to lots of scumbling.
And yeah, I guess I am patient :3 Sometimes >_> -

A paint test to see if I'll be using a different kind of paper for other watercolor commissions and to test some new colors before using them on actual commissioned pieces.
Consensus: YES.
The difference? I normally use cold press, which has some grain/tooth for watercolor, but I'm starting to enjoy hot press quite a bit. -

There are currently several places collecting Mike Weiringo tribute artwork on DA. I'm hoping to stick this piece in the tribute here: http://for-mike.deviantart.com/ -
I used the Way Back Machine and Web Archive. The problem is that it will pull up your main page, but nothing beyond that. I tried. :/

*ahem* My Haiku, for Shia.
An ode to Red Bull

So I'm sittin here, and thinkin, if anyone would like a lil freebie sketch, that if they were to, I dunno, reply to this message, I'd be cool with that.
Only the first person though... to keep you on your toes, sorta like how Shia does. You must reply with reference though, I'm not a psychic. -

A thank you to the love of my life drawn very late last night... as in 3AM. Damned insomnia. -
Wow Shagster, those pieces are gorgeous. Congrats on both of them, I LOVE the second one

For those that didn't know him, Mike was a sweetheart, he was exceedingly talented, and a wonderful person. And it is a loss to the world that he passed on at 44.
Mike was the artist for the series Tellos, which inspired me as a teenager to work in comics and animation. No one could speak poorly of Mike, he was just too much of a wonderful guy. He co-created the character Impulse, and worked on such series as: The Fantastic Four and Spiderman. He helped illustrate one of the four alternate covers for the project the Dreamland Chronicles that I worked on...
I'm just in shock. Please, any thoughts and prayers to his family would be much appreciated at this time.

Well the problem with last years presents are the bugs. A good chunk of presents, when opened, exploded with confetti but didn't give anything :/
