Art instruction/opinion help?

The work looks vector based with accents and highlights added in PhotoShop.

I think the style is called cell shading, but with most things I am probably wrong

I dont know that it has a style name yet. mostly see stuff like it on CN of course I have been wrong many times before. as far as finding a guide maybe one of the cartoonists has a blog.

I just call it 'Cartoon'. And I'd love Tundy in that style. *hint hint* >_> ... <_< Too on the nose? O_o Okay, maybe next art trade! =^_^=

I do enjoy the Cell Shaded style though. It's not how I'd draw personally if I could, but I do enjoy it. Seeing other people characters done in styles like that kinda makes me wish there was a Cartoon version of CoH on television. Only not some sappy kiddy saturday morning cartoon, a more adult version kinda like what the Japanese do.

Sorry, I'm rambling.

Wait! Does that mean you don't like the piece I did for you?

Awe, and I thought that I had done a good job making it look cartoony... maybe I should just stick to customer service and avoid art.

I know, I was just joking with you.

But it is sometimes hard to express stuff with only a few smily faces to show if it is a joke or not (which are easily missed or interpreted incorrectly).

This style is generally referred to as Animation style. Cartooning is more like a Sunday comic strip, it's definitely not Anime style, but not quite detailed enough to be Comic style.

Some people would go so far to say it's similar to Timm Animation style, since he's the one that made the newer comic animation style popular with the Batman:TAS show.

Does Bruce Timm or anyone else have an instructional book on Timm's style??

I'd call it cell shading too!
I like this tutorial :
http://www.blackrevolver.com/tutorial.html

The guy does slightly anime style art, but he's really good at it.

I think the only big difference I see is the colours they chose for lining, etc.

Christopher Hart was my idol when I was little. I have like 10928343 of his books

Hmmm that's two different styles... (both books are on my wish list too) one overly simplified and more of a loose feel like these DA Artists:

American Ninja X
Atombasher
Cheeks 74
Dekarogue
Dusty Abell
Nuno Plati

And of course Funk Yeti and Marcio Takara!

The other style is a cross between anime and american comics called Fusion. Not sure if anyone teaches it other than Chris Hart's books, which are very good...

My suggestion would be to study what you like about these artists and try to apply it to your own stuff, in either case since you haven't drawn since high school, you'll need to practice A LOT in order to get your brain to process looking at things differently than before. That IS how the mind works, if you haven't drawn since you were 6, you will still draw like a 6 year old, it's literally like remembering lyrics you forgot.

So you have a lot of studying to do, good luck in either case!

I may have to get that simplified comics book by Chris Hart. I have his Extreme Anatomy and Extreme Comic books and so far I am liking what I see. But I think the simplified would be more my style.

I'm actually going to dissuade the use of BlackRevolver's tutorial. There are MUCH simpler ways to do cell shading without worrying about making selections.

To color linework, here's what I do... (with Photoshop)

1. Scan in your artwork, inked or sketch, it doesn't matter at 300dpi (color/RGB).

2. Go to Layers. Select your background layer. Right click. A display box will come up with the option to duplicate layer. Click that.

3. Select Background copy. Now you're going to go to the dropdown box under Layers. On default it's set to normal. Change the layer property to Multiply. Set on multiply means that the linework will stay intact while you color UNDER it, just like an animation cel.

4. Select your FIRST background layer again, Create a New Layer by selecting the white rectangle next to the trash can at the bottom of the layers box. You can RENAME this layer to base colors, color, whatever you like. If you would like to do shadows on the same level, that's fine. Many people simply repeat the process with creating a new layer for shadows, and another for highlights.

Hope that helps.

As for the amentioned style, it's simply an 'animated' style. I would also like to put my vote in against Christopher Hart books. You'll learn a lot more by studying the artists you like...really.

You know, upon glancing back at those directions, I should probably write a tutorial on using masks for cel shading. It makes life so much easier...

Hrmm... Not too sure about any specific links that teach the "timm" style but I've been hoarding these two links for when/if I ever get digital.

Really? I just scan in the drawing and select linear burn for that layer, then I just keep that layer always on top. Does your way look better? I have been looking for a shortcut around digitally inking my stuff, i.e. making my scanned pencil lines look smooth and solid.
