  1. I play Aion exclusively now - but I used to play City of Heroes for many years. I'd play both again if NCsoft sold multigame account passes - and I'm sure lots of others would too.

Is this something that can be looked into anytime soon?

Some players hate that CoH/V is so instance dependent; others hate the lack of visible loot, or the lack of an endgame they consider worthwhile. EQ / DAOC players of the time felt that CoH/V was too light and breezy, that it lacked substance.

    And so on.

Correction: There are a lot of people who *want* to like COH/V. And then there are others (like me) who *love* COH/V but got tired of waiting for some fresh new interactive game mechanics to play with (that goes beyond the whole "zone/instance content vs. QoL improvements" argument that has plagued this community for the past two years).

Don't get me wrong: I love how everything's been redressed to look new again (animations, power customization, new "booster pack" costumes, new Fifth Council TFs), but underneath it all its still the same old game mechanics that we saw in 2004.

No doubt, Going Rogue is going to be something special but its got the stage dressings of content folks wanted 3 or 4 years ago - not now. I'm glad to see NCsoft has reinvested in the game, but being able to play in a third-world "Praetorian Earth" zone wasn't at the top of many people's list. Find a way to raise the bar on the "I'm a hero/I'm a villain" gameplay interaction to all new levels in the current city/isle zones, and then you'll have a runaway hit that'll last for at least another five years...

And truth be told, unless you're a fan of the game who can appreciate the "Praetorian Earth" references, the average mainstream gamer who's never experienced COH before will look at this retail box on the shelf and give it a pass because its not exactly clear *what* genre experience Going Rogue is trying to sell them - but oh look, there's APB, WoW, Aion and many other titles that make a little more sense.

Me personally, I don't need Praetoria to sell me on "going rogue" between all points good and evil. I need the game as it currently stands to sell me on the experience of being extremely villainous vs. superbly heroic - and I'm still waiting. Get this dual environment fleshed out a bit more, and *a lot* of folks will come running to subscribe. Sadly, I get this kind of immersive experience more out of many console games than I do on a PC game like COH. Its not that PC games *can't* do this (because they can), but rather that they *don't* (ie. it's easier/cheaper to port an innnovative console game over to PC than it is to compete an innovative PC product against a console game) which is a serious mistake.

Feel free to dismiss me as a "hater" if it makes it easier for you, but I swear that I've been playing COH since 2004 until recently and that the only reason I'm taking the time to post this at all is to tell you that I (as do many other former COH subscribers) *love* this game - and I love the Devs for staying on and maintaining its evolution through since 2004 - but the original core premise (or "promise" if you will) of providing a "superheroes vs. supervillains" gaming experience has really gone off the rails by quite a bit - enough so that we don't really feel comfortable coming back as long-term subscribers until it's fixed.

Five years on, what's it going to take for people to stop being so dismissive of critical commentary and start realizing that its all said and done out of love and heartfelt nostalgia for the best superhero game ever made?

(EDIT: Man, I feel like such a [CENSORED] for even logging in to post this but sometimes you guys just really don't get it...)
  3. Cool feature, but I'm very disappointed that there's been no follow-up on "Dev Choice" awarded missions for "unknown" players since April 2009. Electing player-created missions for Dev Choice awards should've been the first priority before promoting this feature. Please try to award even a couple "Dev Choice" missions to your player base between now and when these "Guest Authors" start posting.

The player base worked hard to put new content out there; the Devs should recognize their contributions appropriately before moving on to "established" writers - even if its only 2 or 3 story arcs out of thousands.
  4. Take your time getting out my closed beta invite...

I'm thoroughly enjoying the beta event for Aion. That game is *way* better than I expected... I mean *WAY* better.
  5. The buzz on the street regarding the "pen and paper" game is that it's terrible. Absolutely terrible. I've got a number of friends in the closed beta who are not at all happy with what they saw, and have no intention of buying in once it goes live. (Four of them are planning to reactivate their COH accounts once I16 goes live. Two already re-activated for the recent Double XP weekend.)

Another red flag is the "lifetime buy-in offer" that's only available until the day before the game actually goes live. More thank likely, that company is hard-up for cash, but at $200 a pop, how do you really know that "a lifetime" isn't going to be more than 6 months to a year - especially if the game tanks?

No.... the signs are telling on this one. If anyone's going to check out that game, you may want to wait a few weeks until after release to see if the buzz is still negative.

    I16 Closed Beta

I usually win by a cultural victory, although I've worked with friends to clear the map with military forces. I prefer brains over brawns victory myself (but the thrill of battle is too much fun).

BABs, have you tried Civilization: Revolution on the console? Its a very different experience.

I have lesbian friends who prefer the term "queer." Its not everyone's term of choice of course, but go figure.

Of course, whenever I hear the word "queer," I think of this wonderful childhood book I used to read:

  8. That's a really good article. Definitely clarifies a couple of urban legends we've all heard over the years. The new screenshots are extremely impressive. Thanks for taking the time to pull I16 together - and write up this Dev Diary entry.

Consider me tickled pink and completely sold on I16.

    Just to clarify:

I said "moderators" can't do it - the plugin mods you're talking about on vbulletin.org are for "super admin" privileges. In vBulletin, there's different tiers of administrative group permissions (and custom user groups can be added/deleted at any time) - these mods are meant to be restricted to the highest administrator setting (aka "superadmin") and used sparingly in cases where members are using vBulletin's PM system to spam/harrass other members. That alone is a valid use of the plugin - if installed.

That said, keep in mind the following:

    1) This plugin is not a standard ability packaged into the vBulletin's retail software product.
    2) As this is not a licensed plugin, its unlikely NCsoft would incorporate it in their business products (its not impossible but definitely unlikely as it might affect site stability issues or potentially open up a new "back door" hack depending on how the plugin was scripted).
    3) Moderator 8 (and others) have better things to do than read your PMs.

    Hope this helps.

Whether someone's "straight acting" or "masculine," "feminine" or "effeminate" doesn't matter. How they choose to self-identify (good or bad) is their choice; how others choose to identify them *could* be problematic - and that's where the dangers of labeling/stereotyping come into play.

Although LGBT folks are a minority, we're an invisible minority because our differences aren't as immediately apparent/visibile to the naked eye as race and ethnicity (unless we talk about perceived behaviours and body language), so we compensate by coming out and saying "I'm gay." That statement right there says a lot more about a person than second-guessing whether someone is masculine, feminine, effeminate or straight acting - because those perceptions don't always indicate a person's sexual orientation.

My observation was to stop employing labels - period. Unless someone say they're gay or straight or bi or whatever, don't go making your own assumptions about their sexuality based on how they act/present themselves (and don't appear judgemental against them as a result either). No one should feel the need to distinguish themselves as being more masculine or feminine, better or worse, than anyone else just to feel better about themselves or be perceived by others as "normal" or "more accepted." Again, that's symptomatic of poor self confidence whatever your sexuality.

Of course, not everyone's comfortable with saying (or hearing) the words "I'm gay" for various reasons. But for those that do, at least try to be respectful (if not supportive) of their existence and acknowledge their courage in coming out and stepping forward as an invisible minority.

Just be yourself, feel secure in your beliefs and your own sexuality, accept (not tolerate) your fellow LGBT players for who they are, and live on.
  11. Whoa, wait. Hang on...

Who's Horatio? I don't think I've ever seen that red name before.

Moderators cannot view a user's "PM mailbox" contents in vBulletin.

The best thing you can do for yourself at this point is take a deep breath and relax.

As do I. I asked Nivene about this the other day and she acknowledged they're working on this but it could take some time to fix.

There really are too many Dev names to run post searches on, but I say either check the "Announcements" section or just run searches on Castle's or BAB's posts and you'll be good to go.

Getting back on topic, does anyone have credible referrals for an openly gay European SG to share with the OP?

What I'm talking about in the context it was used in this thread.

    Shannon said

"I've got friends who are L, G and B in RL and they're all straight acting so that you wouldn't know unless ya ask them."

what would you use to replace straight acting in that sentence?
They're cool, they're awesome, they're amazing and leave it at that. "Straight acting" is acting as an adjective - just switch it out for something else less discriminate. You don't try to qualify a person of color's particular shade of skin tone so why would you do it with someone's sexuality? Seriously, the term "straight acting" is just rude - and offensive.

And in reply to an earlier post that the term "straight acting" is not derogatory, let me tell you now: I'm gay and I take exception to the term "straight acting". That said, I know plenty of LGBT folks who are very insecure with their sexuality that need the "straight acting" badge of honor to help them feel better about themselves - but that's a symptom of internalized homophobia and poor self-confidence.

Trust me, nobody's doing anyone any favors by describing an LGBT person (or themselves) as "straight acting."

"Straight acting" is a derogatory term, and its not anyone's responsibility to tone down their sexuality just so they appear more socially acceptable to a predominantly heterosexual community. I personally wouldn't consider anyone a friend if they always had to justify me to themselves and to others as "straight acting."

Tolerance sucks, acceptance rocks. Tell 'em your LGBT friends are "awesome" rather than "straight acting" and move on.

Additionally, there's plenty of openly gay SG's on the US servers, and its not an issue for the Devs or NCSoft. If anything its just one more "themed" supergroup amongst a dozen others - and there's nothing wrong with that. I commend the OP for inquiring about openly gay SGs; keep asking around. I'm sure there's more than a few SG's out there that'll be glad to help you. Unfortunately I don't know the EU LGBT player base well enough yet to make a recommendation.

In theory, this is all balanced by there being no "end of mission" reward in terms of XP/Influence/Prestige. In practice...not so much.

    [/ QUOTE ]

How about adding a bit of QoL on story missions? As it stands, it takes forever and a day for most newbies to get into this game, particularly since there's no travel power till 14 when they don't know they can earn one at lvl 5. Something like choosing +50% debt (or 50% of the debt you would get if <lvl 10s got debt) and getting rezzed at mission start. Also, you could tighten the range at which players are given door missions (and maybe FedEx missions too). I know you want lowbies to explore the world, but I almost quit soon after starting because of the frustration involved in running around.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Disagree.

This game was very fun at low levels. I remeber when I was first hacking mobs around Atlas as a noob. I remember remarking then how close everything was, how well designed the mission system.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree with EG. Back in our day (cough) teams actually swept the streets through AP into other zones. You'd be surprised how quickly you chased a hoodlum across the zone into the neighboring hazard zone - and with very little effort or sense of time passing.

Nowadays the streets are empty of players except for a sampling of costume contests, Wentworth investors and MA farmers gathered beneath the big globe. The core dynamics changed - so of course basic street sweeping isn't gonna be worth scratch anymore.

It is a fun "predicament" though when you don't have a travel power.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
I wonder if when you're on a team, if it revels the Fog of War for EVERYONE, or just you?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I would think it'd be just the player (there are very few veteran rewards that allow one player to provide the same benefit for an entire team) but I could be wrong.
  20. I apologize if this question is coming out the wrong way, but in light of Issue 16 and the ability to recolor the ice powersets, the changes of color sorta highlight the flaws of the very "geometrical" rather than "fractal" ice armor and similar aspects of some other ice powers.

Is it possible to update these animations so they look more "icy" (for lack of a better word) and less geometrically blunt? I'm sure some folks like this "cubey" look better, but it'd be nice to have an alternative style/animation of smooth, shimmery ice or drippy, "icicly" type appearance to choose from (and yes I took unnecessary liberties with the word "icicle" - just give me my triple-word score Scrabble points already, lol).
  21. Very cool.

Suprised there's no beige or brown colors included in the color palette. Is there a reason why these colors are solely restricted to skin textures?

  22. Do folks still use leveling pacts?

  23. Hmm... did anybody actually play this yet or am I wasting my time writing mission arcs? I'd hate to put out $20 for more arc slots if folks aren't playing anything else but custom farm missions.
  24. Arc ID: 270622
    # of missions: 4
    Difficulty: Challenging
    Alignment: Neutral
Lvl Range: Open (there is no level cap in place)
Enemies: Custom NPCs and an Elite Boss
Synopsis: The final days of the Tsoo are numbered as they are hunted down by an ancient enemy...

Any and all feedback is welcome to help me improve the arc.

    Thanks!
  25. They're all straight? Since when...

Oh wait, just saw Serge's... a bit stereotypical, but ok.
