So yeah, I understand where you're coming from.

The fact that as far as I have seen he hasn't really learned to control his anger is disgusting to me. This is why to me, Batman and Superman and many other DC chars are so much more sympathetic to me. Having the power to decimate someone, and even having a huge amount of fury, but still keeping it in check and trying to do whats right without hurting people.

Banner doesn't do this. He's a emo twit that in the end doesn't care about anyone but himself and while he may do some good, it's not cause he's a good person, but rather it just happens that it works out better for himself.
Absolutely wrong, in the comics. (The movies didn't pose the good/evil question very well.)

The trick with having a rage that can defeat anyone is that you should only bring it out when justified. Banner only brings out the Hulk when it is absolutely needed in pursuit of a good cause or when his life is in danger. (As a comic book character, these situations happen at least once an issue. )

Banner has *tremendous* self control, and has shown himself to be a good man over and over again. He's probably the most selfless character in all of comics. Seriously, he doesn't want *anything* for himself except to never turn into the Hulk again, and maybe Betty if she'll have him. If he takes any action at all, it's to help other people.

The Hulk, being a different personality, is not as sympathetic. He can be selfish and careless with his power. But you can't blame him for that; he's rage incarnate. He does still has Banner's moral compass to guide him subconsciously, so he still works on the side of the good guys.

But as we said above, the best Hulk stories are those that focus on Banner, not the big green baby.

  4. I often take the ST immob on a controller because it does fair damage, and controllers need damage if you're going to solo with them. It's also useful against bosses -- most of the ST immobs are magnitude 4 (including Elec control's), which means they stop bosses and set containment in a single hit.

On a dominator...meh. A dominator has better ways to deal damage. But if your powerset has poor AE controls, it might better to skip the AE immob to prevent yourself from grabbing too much aggro in teams.

I don't have a good feel for Elec control's AE potential, yet. I think that if you're in a team, Static Field is going to be mostly wasted by your teammate's attacks, and you have very little other AE mitigation. (I don't count, or like, Jolting Chain.) So if you're going to team as a dom then the ST immob might be better. If you're going to solo the AE immob is probably best.
  5. Using *only* powers that already exist as invention recipes, and are thus available to everyone:

    Street Weapons pool
    1. Baseball bat (melee attack)
    2. Envenomed Dagger (single target debuf)
    3. Revolver (ranged attack)
    4. Hand Grenades (targeted AoE attack)

    Gadgets pool
    1. Smoke Flash (targeted AoE debuff)
    2. Power Analyzer (special; gives info on enemies)
    3. Jet Pack (movement power)
    4. Backup Radio (short duration pet)

    Scientist pool
    1. Plasmatic Taser (weak ranged attack)
    2. Recovery Serum (recovery buff)
    3. Med Pack (self heal)
    4. Kinetic Dampener (resistance shield)

It would probably take a day's work for one programmer to code all these together.

And that's without delving into all the temporary powers found in missions, or purchasable from vendors in PvP zones, or granted from expansion packs. There are tons of powers out there. Putting them into power pools and letting players customize their characters with them should be trivial.

Yes! This, and I agree with everything else you wrote. I identify with the Hulk for much the same reasons as you, Lastjustice.

You all know that Hulk has a catchphrase: "Hulk SMASH!" But did you know that Banner has a catchphrase, too? It's from Paul Jenkins' run, but it's shown up since and in his video game:

"You can't break a man who's already broken."

Banner is a broken human being, and the Hulk is a manifestation of his damage. He understands that, and he knows that the rage of a broken man can do powerful and terrifying things. But if focused correctly, that rage can also turn a man into a hero.

Banner always keeps his focus. It's because he is a good man that Hulk is a hero.

As a broken human being myself, I need a hero like that. I need to be reminded that even at my worst, I can rise above my feral nature and be a good man.

I can understand if that kind of hero doesn't appeal to everyone, but by god it works for me.

But you don't have to, and if you do there is a cost of three powers from your AT sets. Now we get Stamina free, at no cost...and everyone will still need to take a pool power to fill all of their power slots. Something will become the new 'must have' power pool. And there are only four reasonable choices. This means much less variety.

That's my argument. But I didn't know there was a NDA for i20 already. So I'm probably not going to get any answers until the details of i20 are announced. Not a problem, I'm a patient man, I can wait.

For one, why are you only assuming people will take one travel pool? They may not take more than one travel *power,* but they'll more than happily dip into Speed for Hasten, or Leaping for Combat Jumping, or Fly for Air Superiority. Several support builds will take Recall Friend from teleport. Without feeling a need to take Fitness, I'd say you'll see more branching out there.

Plus, presence - it certainly is taken. "Tankerminds" (and even non-tanking masterminds) come to mind right away, just to grab the taunts. (And concept builds, admittedly.) Common, no.
Yep, that's all true, but even if you include the travel pools there still isn't much variety. There are PvP builds that follow some odd rules, but aside from that all PvE builds are turning out to be mostly the same -- and they will have even more similarities when Stamina becomes inherent.

    Quote:
Also, you're *not* creating a need for 9 more slots. Not all powers need slotting, and you'll see "one slot wonders" becoming more popular (Stealth taken for a LOTG +Rech, for instance, or Temperature Protection for Fire armor types for the slow and another KB IO.)
This leads us into the question of how the devs envision the players building their characters. Do they want us to take all the powers in our AT primary and secondary, and add variety to our characters with specialized IO slotting? Or do they want us to use the ATs as a guideline for how the character should play, and spice that up with additional powers?

Considering the IO system is still officially voluntary, every sign points to the devs wanting us to customize our characters primarily via power selection, not via slotting choices. The Fitness pool was an option for customization; an option that most people chose to take. Now that choice is being taken away from us. To retain the level of character variety that the game now offers, we need some new options to open up.

Oh! I didn't know there was an NDA in effect. That implies that there's already a closed beta -- I didn't know that, either.

If I'm asking people to spill the beans on a closed beta then ignore me.

But if there is no applicable NDA, I'd love to hear any rumors or dev conversations anyone wants to offer.
  10. I'm not offering suggestions for new power pools. Rather, I'm speculating that either i19 or i20 will contain new power pools, and I'd like to hear from others who may have evidence of it from the test server or from talking with the devs at conventions.

Why do I think there will be new power pools? Because Stamina is becoming an inherent. This frees up three slots in almost every build. Every character has 18 powers from their primary and secondary, and 19 power slots from level 1-38. When Stamina is inherent, a player will easily be able to take every power available in their archetype save one, plus a travel power and a prerequisite -- and for veterans with the City Traveller badge, they won't even need the prerequisite. This means that cookie cutter builds will be rampant, with the only differences being how slots are assigned. (More on that later.)

Now, there are existing power pools to flesh out our characters. But there will still be standardized builds, because there is not enough variety in power pools. if you subtract the Fitness pool (now inherent) and assume a character will only have one travel pool, there are only five power pools available. And one of those is Presence, which I have never seen anyone use in-game. Four power pools, three of which are primarily taken for defensive purposes (Fighting, Medicine, and Concealment) does not give players many options for rounding out their characters.

Want more evidence? Count up the enhancement slots you have available. The Fitness pool took two enhancement slots (assuming Health gets none but Stamina gets +2), but it also occupied three power slots. Powers from your primary or secondary will almost certainly require additional enhancement slots to be useful, and for most powers 'useful' is +3. (Accuracy + 3 damage, or endurace + 3 defense/resist.) You're gaining 2 enh slots but creating the need for 9 more -- a net loss of 7 slots. The only good way to make this up is to take more powers that do not need additional enhancement. Power pools, especially the prerequisites taken on the way to the better powers, are a good way to eat up power slots without losing enhancement slots.

Even more evidence? Look at the proliferation of temporary powers with i18 and i19. There are now guns, hammers, grenades, resuscitation and recovery devices, shields, stealth powers, and jetpacks that can all be assembled from recipes. You could easily put together several new power pools using only the existing recipes: A 'Weapons' pool with baseball bat, revolver, and grenades; a new 'Gadget' travel pool with a grenade, a shield, and a jetpack; and a 'Chemistry' pool with recovery and resuscitation and maybe a defense buff on loan from the Secondary Mutation power. It has never been easier to envision new power pools that contain powers already existing in the game. Even though these temporary powers are available by building recipes, players will choose them as power pools both to get permanent access to the powers and to flesh out their characters.

It seems obvious to me that when Stamina becomes inherent, new power pools must be on the way. But I've heard no rumors nor official announcements about it. Does anyone know anything, or has anyone heard anything, that I might have missed?

That's because Praetoria enemies aren't like Paragon enemies. Every early group in Paragon has either guns, knives, or axes, and all of those weapons debuff defense. There are no knives or axes in Praetoria, and very few bullets. Most enemies (Resistance and Police) use energy blasts. Not until you start to see the Syndicate will you see any defense debuffing.

My most versatile defender is a Sonic/Archery with the medicine pool and the Psionic APP. He can buff a team, debuff the enemies and pincushion them with arrows, be a gutter healer or controller or a temporary tank. But that's a build for advanced players, I would think. Dark/Dark, as people have suggested, is a very versatile powerset that new players can easily get into.

  13. Everyone likes a different part of the Discworld. I love anything with Rincewind in it, but I don't like the Guards stories. It's probably best for new readers to sample a few different books in the series before committing themselves to any of the character arcs.
  14. Hated this show for two reasons.

One, every character looked the same. They're all early thirty-somethings with great skin and hair. Even the president and all his advisors. They couldn't cast a single believably middle-aged person? It's like West Wing 90210.

But second and worse, they cut the narrative back and forth in time every two minutes. If I glanced away from the TV and back again, I didn't know if the story was in the past or the present. It's a horrible directing choice and the scriptwriter should be slapped.

I suspect that the narrative bouncing back and forth will become a signature of the series, and for that reason the secret will be all about time travel. I won't be watching it again to find out, though.

The endoscope is easy and you won't remember it because of the drugs. It'll tell them all they need to know. Just listen to the doctors, they know how to treat this stuff.

If I have any real advice, it would be that you needn't settle on one drug for treatment of stomach acid. They'll want to put you on a proton-pump blocker, probably Nexium. Nexium gives me headaches. You have other choices -- Aciphex and Prevacid, or the over-the-counter Prilosec (which is an early formulation of Nexium that works better for some people). If you don't like the side effects of the drug they give you, ask to try another one until you find what works for you.

    Ice/Cold tips?

For thematic reasons, I wanted to bring an Ice Control/Cold Domination controller through Praetoria. So far he's okay, but I sense a lot of potential.

Any tips for the combination of Ice/Cold?

I worry that it might have *too much* recharge debuff. With Shiver, Arctic Air, Infrigidate and Snow Storm, if I understand it correctly any two of those will floor an even con's recharge to the lower cap...and that's before using Benumb. Maybe I can get away with only two of those powers, and since I'm forced to take Infrigidate the other choice seems to be Arctic Air.

Other than that, it seems like a fairly typical, if low-damage, controller build. I was wondering if anyone had experience with the combination to lend me.
  17. If you want to use your iPod touch to take notes, get the Shapewriter app. It's the best note taking app out there, and the free version is probably all you need.

My favorite weather app is the one from Weather Underground. It has several features, like hourly projections, the other weather apps don't have.

As for book readers, I prefer Stanza, but I haven't done a thorough analysis of all of them. I'm not happy with reading on the Ipod Touch, the screen's too small. The iPad is better for that.

    Ice and Why?

I have an Ice tank that has stalled in the mid 40s. I haven't had a chance to get him to 50 yet.

If you want to know the problem with Ice tanks, take one into the Imperious Task Force. Every single enemy there has a defense debuff. The Cimerorans will hack you to pieces in no time, even if you have capped defenses, unless you have team support to keep you alive.

Defense debuffs have been made very frequent in this game, possibly as a response to IO-ed out defenses. Every enemy with a gun, claw, blade or radioactive blood breaks defenses. This means the defense-only sets are beginning to suffer.

When fighting enemies that have few defense debuffs, Ice is a terrific set. It's combination of extreme slows, taunts, and saps create a tanking experience like nothing else. But it has a vulnerability that's too common right now. Still, it's viable with a good balanced team.

I was worried about that trial but I needn't have been. It's almost all psi damage. Sponge laughs at that kind of stuff. Although Rularuu did take me down once. Not sure what he was throwing.

    Quote:
I don't know about that. According to my survivability analysis, Dark Armor (at least mine) can sustain a lot more DPS than most invulns and stones. Maybe those kinds of analysis are flawed in favor of healing abilities. Maybe the stone tank I was with just didn't do it right, but he dropped more times than my Dark Armor tank did on the STF I ran with him.
Well, I don't have a lot of experience with toons that are massively IOed out. I know that going by the numbers, basic Dark is not as hardy as basic Stone or basic Invuln. Sponge's S/L resistance is about 62% (I may be missing a couple slots in Tough). I'm not even sure I could cap her resistance at 90%...but that's easy for other tanks to reach. And she has no natural defence except for Weave. So it's clear that the numbers are against her.

But DA gets other compensations. We shut down minions just by being in the room, we have a terrific heal, the best self-rez in the game, and aside from knockback we have no weaknesses.

Once you spend a billion inf to IO out a toon it can probably handle anything, no matter what its powersets are. I'm still scraping together enough merits to get Sponge a Miracle +Recovery IO.

I'm building him as a tanktroller, more focused on making sure the enemy can't do squat than actually dealing damage to them. To that end I'm planning on taking Ice Patch, Cloak of Fear AND Oppressive Gloom. Since the mobs will be staggering/falling down, and/or cowering in fear, I should be able to take them out at my leisure as long as my endurance holds out.
I have a DA/Ice tanktroller named Sponge, and she's great. Minions are ignorable, as if they're not even there. Lts are easy to neuter with either Ice Patch or the hold. She's a bit squishier than I'd like against AVs, and there are endurance issues because I run Tough and Weave, although I'm not sure that I need to. But she's not fully IOed out, and so she'll only get better.

As for the auras, I have Oppressive Gloom, Cloak of Fear, and Death Shroud. They're useful in different situations, but you never run all three at once. OP + DS is for soloing, and DS contributes most of my damage. OP + CoF is for teams that don't need me to contribute damage. DS + CoF is for boss and AV fights where OP does nothing and the CoF only serves as a to hit debuff (and I have a Dark Watcher's Chance for Recharge Slow in there).

A DA tank doesn't rise to the apex of indestructibility that a Stone tank or some Invuln tanks reach, but they can do crazy things and they're great at what they do.

In general, I consider Steam to be less intrusive than most game DRMs. At a minimum, you never have to perform a disc check.
