Most of the people here seem to be asking for defiance to start sooner, because of the fast way that a blasters hitpoint bar seems to drop. But I've got a alternate idea. How about we tie in some sort of defiance factor on what percentage of your hitpoints you get hit with within a timed window.
So lets say you go into a frey with 2 even con minions and they both get in lucky shots on you. From what I've seen of melee lets just say you take 60% damage. Now being a 40% hitpoints isnt going to normally trigger defiance. But if you go into a fight and lose 60% of your hitpoints right from the get go, your in trouble and know it.
So how about the speed that you take the damage becomes the factor, not percentage of hitpoints left.
Lets look at it from a roleplaying point of view, then from a numeric point of view. This is gonna be long folks, so make sure you've got a cookie to munch on while reading.
Eternal torch walks into a room with two rather disagreeable Hellions who are trying to kidnap a scientist. The Hellions turn around and pull a pistol out and take a shot at our hero. But hit with grazing hits, not much damage there.
So ET moves in and hits them with a fireball, these guys dont see that dangerous, best to arrest them without hurting them too badly. As they close into melle range one pulls a sledgehammer and one stays back and shoots. (A typical mob AI tactic)
The shooter shoots again, another grazing hit. Eternal Torch cant stand this punishment all day, but his life isnt threatened yet. And then it happens the sledgehammer user knows what he's doing and knocks the snot out of our hero, putting him on the ground. The situation just became desperate (Hero takes over 40% damage in a few seconds from the gun shot and the heavy hit from the sledgehammer)
A dark fury crosses Eternal Torch face as he says in a low voice, "It's lord of the flies time now..." And blasts them both with flame that match the intestity that he's feeling. He's not holding back now. In a few seconds the teleporters recall the badly burned and defeated villains to the hospital where they'll be treated before teleportation to the Paragon City Police Station for booking, while Eternal Torch consoles the victim and gets information on whats happening inside of the building.
That, in my opinion, is defiance in action. Now for the numbers.
ET moves in on 2 hellions guarding a hostage. He jas 260.5 hitpoints at max. Both Hellions pull out guns and shoot. Both hit for 26ish damage. Thats 260.5-54=206.5 hitponts left.
One hellion moves into melee range while ET throws a fireball. No bonus to damage because even though he got hit hard, it wasnt even 25% damage. The next round is tougher though. ET gets hit by a sledgehammer and a gunshot for 84+26 damage (110) Now thats 206-110=105 hitpoints. He's taken a 50% wack in hitpoints from the get go. Now that should kick in Defiance right there. Defiance goes into effect (You can figure out the scale. But losing 50% of your hitpoints in 2 hits is pretty damn major) and his damage gets boosted in turn.
This is my idea of how defiance should work. Also maybe give it a 4 to 6 second window (Roughly 2 attacks) after it is activated, because the first thing that I think of when I lose 50% of my hitpoints in a second. Is popping a green, not blasting the enemy.
Post feedback folks, but I think this is the way to go.
Oh, and the kickin time on defiance as it is on test now is off. It's not starting at 39% like it should from what I can see. -

You will get SG bases without CoV. Just wont be able to participate in raids. Quite a generous offer from the Devs in my opinion.

Thats changed then, I thought the only way you would be able to build a base was if you owned CoV... -

Don't you remember the old post with his pictures? They had a Beta pic where he had brown hair, a current pic where he had white hair, and a 'future prediction' pic of some poor, scared man in the mud with a look of horror in his eyes.
That one had me laughing for a good fifteen minutes

I went to Origins this year and had a chance to ask Jack Emmert a few questions about the new ATs and other new things coming in CoH and CoV. But, the most astonishing thing was when I asked about scrappers and this happened:

HA! That, my friend, is a thing of beauty. -

So, as recent posts seem to indicate, it appears the new CoH comic is going to be more episodic based. (Such as a Backstreet Brawler solo story). So, I got to thinking (Yes, yes, I know. Me and thinking usually leads to trouble)... What kind of story's would you guys like to see appear at some point in the comic?
For me...
A Mynx solo story.
A story that takes place in the "golden age", that DOESEN'T involve time travel.
An arc set during WW2, focused on either the First Hero Brigade, Sand Kings, or the Dawn Patrol.
A story focused on the heroes during their down time and how they relax. (Like how the Tick and some of the other heroes of The City hung out in the Cafe).
A story told from the Citizens perspective of a "Normal" day in Paragon City, showing what its like to live in a city filled with Heroes and Villians.

First of all I've seen what happens when you start putting thoughts together :shiver:
JUST KIDDING!!
As for what I'd like to see in a story arc. How about some bacstorys on Hero 1. We all lost our capes in his honor for awhile remember? And as a matter of fact, just because nobody in Paragon City knows what happend to Hero 1 and crew on the other side of that portal into the Rikti homeworld (Boy I hope I dont have my CoH history screwed up, it'll make me look as stupid as say, complaining about my 10 PERSON group. LOL) doesnt mean we cant have a comic issue arc showing whats happend there. Maybe Hero 1 isnt dead? -

I've got to tell you. More then anything else at this point. I am SO looking forward to having a base and the whole design scenario of bases. I love designing things.

Manticore...guys. If you truly listen to us. Please, at least for a partial episode, bring back Apex.
Our last vison of Apex is standing in Atlas Park, all alone, shouting, "Level 15 scrapper, looking for group!" It's kinda a sad way to end it for him.
Sure it might reflect how alot of us have lost good friends in the game and have had to continue on without them, but I'm sure there's people out there who'd like to see that he's doing alive and well.
[/ QUOTE ]
yea, i must admit, Apex really grew on me as well. i would love to see him come back and help out in fashion, or atleast cameo apperences. the last part of the story arc Blue King really did well inmy opinion. i actually felt something towards those characters. man, it would be awesome to see Apex back somehow.
[/ QUOTE ]
So did he become a sword user at the end of the series, or was that just a good luck charm?
But yeah, an Apex cameo would be pretty cool. Maybe in some of the Back Alley Brawler issues, since they seem to have met eachother a few times before.
[/ QUOTE ]
That sword he has is whats left of War Witches Flame sword, remember how she said of all her power all that is left is this iron sword (Or something like that). Which makes it all the sadder, it was in memory of her that he became a Broadsword scrapper. -

Oh my God! This is the first time Statesman's replied to one of my posts. My life is now completed

Mantid, 5 stars for you for having the creepiest Avatar on the boards.

Hello folks! Alot of us (Myself included) and been pounding the living stuffing out of poor Statesman (Jack) about all the changes that have come to the game that we all love.
As you can imagine, this has to have some sort of effect on the poor man. But low and behold! I didnt know how much!!
Here's Jack before the release of City of Heroes...

And here's Jack from a recent interview...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/Ogar/bscap.jpg
Notice the lines of worry, how we've turned his hair grey!! Oh the humanity!!
But now, with the help of our friends at Portal Corps, I've been able to use a specially designed portal to go into the future!! Thats right, I've brought back a picture of Jack after just 4 months of City of Villains going live! Disclamer..What your about to see may shock some of you..

Oh the humanity! Please, please, please! Help me in having pitty on our fearless leader who has worked so hard to bring us all a game to enjoy!

I hope everyone can appreciate that this is just my inept ability to have some fun not so much at the expense of, but with Mr. Emmert. I may not always agree with what he does. But I do still love the game he made a reality. -

And to be honest, he never "really" answers a friggin' question anyway!

And what the hell do you expect? *EVERY* time he says something, people treat it as if Jesus Christ himself suddendly descended from heaven and start treating it as gospel. So the *second* anything changes or is different from what he said (No matter how vague or non-promise it is) then people start calling him a liar and acting like he just rammed a knife in their back and started kicking their pregnant sister.
[/ QUOTE ]
HAHA!
Now I can take him ramming a knife in my back, and even kicking my pregnant sister. But did he have to punch that baby in the face?
All kidding aside. I agree whole heartedly, Statesman and the other devs as well take alot of crap. I know, I was one of the A-holes who was dishing it out to the point that it was just plain getting silly.
People need to take a few steps back for awhile. I know I did and it's helped a ton. I think I went thru my burnout phase of CoH and now I'm over it and ready to love the game again. -
Ack! Sniff. Bye. Hope you have as much fun there as you had working here with States and the crew of CoH.
If not, screw the money and come back. Money isnt everything, well actually. Money isnt anything. -
[ QUOTE ]
Just to clarify, this means that the official stance is that from levels 45-50, COH changes from being a loot-free game, to being a loot-based game. I'm not sure why the devs want this, but it's their game. Shame, some of us liked COH because it wasn't like other mmos.
[/ QUOTE ]
It's 5 levels, get over it...
People in the high end game really have very little to do with their main character. Of course those who go on Hami Raids should get better enhancements then those who just go to the nearest store and buy em. Also, dont be thinking that just because you got Hami enhancements and your opponent doesnt, that he/she is easy meat. Tactics is gonna be a big part of PVP. Those who play their characters smart will be on top. While I've never been a big fan of PVP. I went 46 and 1 in Everquest in the arena. And alot of those fights were 1 on 1 tag team duels. I look forward to seeing if I can knock heads in this game the way I did in that one. -

Wow, you can stick a fork in me now. I'm done!
Please Statesman, do not allow CoH to be gone to the americans. -
Well, good to see this thread come back. I am still hoping for a real roar from CoH. Something primal, evil, and quite scary. I want to be able to turn the speakers up and freak out the people in the other room, or across the street. hehe.
-
You know what. Try as I might. I cant stay mad that the devs. I for one, from now on. Am just going to keep my big mouth shut when the devs do something I dont agree with...
Wait, who the hell am I fooling. I'll complain as always. It's just that I now know that they'll actually be listening. -
Statesman, I've been riding all of you guys since before issue 3 went live about two things. 1) Taking ranged defense away from invul tankers, and 2) upping boss damage and HP by 50%. Making them stronger then heroes.
1) Your already getting ready to deal with on the test server. So I'll totally skip that.
2) Now what you listed above is new to me. At least your explanations are new to me. And they make sense. I agree bosses are a bit too tough. Maybe lowering the damage a bit, but leave the hitpoints, would be a good solution.
I apologise for some of my sharp comments on the boards earlier. I still dont like how issue 3 is going. I still think that putting more mobs against us on missions instead of making things tougher is the way to go. But it's good to know that your looking into bosses and that the solution that you put out with I3 wasnt your final answer to the problem. -

I didn't really pay attention until yesterday, but I know every missions I did yesterday could not be completed without defeating the boss.
[/ QUOTE ]
I certainly believe you, but, unless you did a pretty small number of missions, that's pretty unusual. Stealth BTW is a good power to ramp up the percentage of missions one can do without fighting bosses.
[/ QUOTE ]
Wait, now we're suppose to use stealth to avoid villains? Some heroes we are. Batman and Superman must be proud. (I know this seems kinda like a personal attack against you personally. But honestly, how can you make a game about heroes and design it so the heroes have to do something like what was posted above?) -
[ QUOTE ]
Yeah well... this one time, I was killed by a Liutenant when I ran naked through a Rikti base.
LIUTENANTS NEED TO BE NERFED!

Jeez, where the hell do people like this come from. The people listed above post legitimate beefs with whats been said then this tard shows up and throws in a sarcastic comment. This is the same kid that at age 9 ran up and smacked the giant wasp nest with a stick then left all his friends to get stung.
Oh, and dont be surprised to see another beef up of minions and lieutenants. They wanted to do it with issue 3 and didnt because they couldnt find a happy medium. Never said they stopped looking. -
Yeah, I understand how great it would be to run a mission with Statesman, or Apex, or War Witch (Right now though, I think I'd throw Statesman under the buss...
Yeah, you go attack those +2 bosses, I'll be right behind ya States :Turns and flies away as soon as the combat gets heavy: hehe)
But these guys are spending a extraordinant (sp?) amount of time datamining how issue 3 has impacted the live servers, and I doubt they'll even get a full breather before issue 4 comes out.
I gotta admit as much as I've been on the devs cases lately (And I have been brutally honest in alot of my posts). This is the hardest working group of devs I've seen in any online game. And I've played alot of em. -

Actually, if a boss will appear in a mission, the mission briefing mentions it. Check the text.
[/ QUOTE ]
And yet, one would think the difficulty slider would be enough to make bosses more difficult for those who want them more difficult, leaving the bosses as they are for those of us who die often enough to bosses as it is. That way, those of us who don't have the time to play as powergamers aren't penalized.
[/ QUOTE ]
That got said dozens of times in the test server forum.
