Cluelessness. Ha.
"Monty Haul" private servers are by no means in the majority. Double XP or "Start at level 50" maybe, but not uber powered toon servers. Cox's casual playstyle and our player demographics wouldn't likely produce or support one.
For what it's worth: Yes, private servers are technically "illegal" but it's incredibly rare for judges and prosecuting attorneys to become involved over them. The only people that ever get into trouble are those that charge money for access or game loot. -
Overall a good post, but I do have to take issue with one thing:
Quote:Its the "you're nothing but a bag of hitpoints" bit that I'm taking issue with.5. TRUE TANKING - I've tried to tank on games such as WoW, after tanking in CoH. My reaction is always - you've got to be kidding me.
In CoH, you are a brick wall, and you can keep a substantial portion of the baddies on you alone, just by doing what comes naturally. In WoW, and most other games, you're nothing but a bag of hitpoints that the healer has to keep filled. Keeping a substantial number of the baddies on you is difficult.
Most games that came after CoX intentionally have far more sophisticated threat mechanics than our game did. Generating threat and holding aggro is part of the challenge and fun for a tank in other games. Likewise, ranged DPS classes and healers can steal that aggro and cause some real problems if they're not careful. There's a lot more at work(and a lot more fun!) in this scenario than you appear to be giving credit to.
In fact, it was stuff like this that caused a lot people that tried CoX to dismiss it outright as being a "Mickey Mouse game that was too easy". I'm not saying that the Holy Trinity is outright superior(and it couldn't port perfectly into our system), but it does have some benefits in certain ways.
Its perfectly ok if you prefer CoX's simpler tanking mechanic(which was your point), but please don't pretend that a huge amount of programming effort and Gameplay Theory hasn't gone into the industry standard, or that it isn't popular.
If you're basing this strictly on experience with WoW, maybe WoW is the problem! Other games might just do it better. -
I would definitely play on a private server. My experience with one for the "800 Pound Gorilla" was very favorable.

Quote:Do you have any transfers left? Virtue is still relatively active.I really should go find that when I've got a spare moment.
Personally, I think the game has gotten even worse than the forums. The other night, I was the sole person on Union. I've given up all hope of getting my storm defender to 50 now. -
She's encountered in the LRSF, and there's also a story arc in Grandville where you have to fight her.
-
I absolutely loved it! I think we all need more stuff like this to keep our spirits up.

Steel Canyon has always felt like home to me in Paragon City. In the Rogue Isles, I'd probably have an apartment in Cap Au Diable.

If you really are that Fansy, you are truly awesome. Welcome to the cause!

Go to AE and initiate(but not enter) a mission there, and then return to City Hall. It works just like a TF, making it so that you will not AFK and log out. That's the method that most everyone else uses, allowing you to still converse and watch for the GMs that show up every so often.

It mapserved on me while I was playing there earlier today, and has been down since. Could this really be the end of the Beta server? Are they really going to be this callous and petty?

Quote:As someone who plays exclusively on Virtue and Freedom, I agree completely with your assessment. Although I still see people on Freedom, I think that a lot of the server's demographic were likely to jump ship immediately after the announcement. And I think you were spot on regarding the level of attachment that roleplayers likely have to their characters. Virtue is also the more mature of the game's two largest servers, and therefore would see less immediate attrition. At this point, Virtue seems consistently more loaded than Freedom, whereas leading up to the announcement, they were more balanced, perhaps with a slight bias towards Virtue being more loaded, more often.
We have always needed to be careful about drawing overly strong conclusions from those load indicators. If the Freedom shard had beefier hardware allocated to it than Virtue, it would be less likely to show the same load even for the same on-line player counts. And the three-dot scale isn't very granular.
All that said, I can't help but wonder if the stereotypes frequently applied to Freedom and Virtue wouldn't suggest that Freedom would empty out more than Virtue under the circumstances. My stereotype of Freedom is as a place that had a lot of players with sort of shallow views of the game - more into "following the herd" in terms of FotM characters, farming, PL-ing, etc. Virtue's stereotype is, of course, of role play, which suggests (but does not guarantee) a greater attachment to characters, SGs or other social groups, and possibly to other players.
Comparing my perception of those two stereotypes, it seems natural to me that the emotional investment of role-players could be stronger, on average, compared to folks who often were just interested on playing on the server with the most other players.
I know I just painted two whole server populations with immensely broad brushes. I'm 100% positive that everyone on Freedom wasn't a farming, PL-ing hack who didn't care about the game, or that every Virtue player is a role player, or even that every role player is emotionally invested in their characters. But I do think there may be something to the idea that those stereotypes really applied sufficiently to affect how the two servers populations reacted to the sunset announcement.
Or I could be completely wrong, and other factors might be at play. I have no good evidence, only theories based on stereotypes that may not really apply the way I think they do.
Contrary to this thread's general tone, there are people like me that will be playing frantically until they pull the plug. I will never be able to play my favorite game ever again, so I'm going to make every second I have left count. I lead TFs and SFs(!!!) almost nightly on Virtue. Transfer a character or two over and join us. -
Quote:If you haven't already, make sure to go to cohtitan.com and grab Sentinal+ so you can save your characters and their costumes. We may have a need for that data moving forward.
I've learned now that unless I can somehow 'posses' my electronic property-- like copying a file to my local computer to play with at leisure, I need to remember that my 'purchase' could mean NOTHING in a matter days. Is a 5 dollar transaction worth it to play with costume pieces for years? Absolutely. Is it worth it to play with today and only today? This week and only this week? For a month? Not a chance. -

Right after posting that I read Zwill's new announcement. No unlocks. Start sharpening those pitchforks and oiling those torches.
-
I completely agree that we seem to be getting a raw deal here, but Zwill hasn't made that final announcement on player services just yet. Let's find out what it actually is first before we start sharpening our pitchforks. Maybe they will unlock everything for us afterall.
I'm definitely done doing business with this company though. Too many closures has made NCsoft a bad investment. -
Gamecards don't work. However, people report that serial codes from box copies do.

Quote:"In ur base, killin' ur doods" is an old meme. Or do I need to fix my sarcasm detector?I have no specific affection for the Trollina (you forgot that already?). Just that your comments came off like an ******. Maybe you aren't one. But hey I look forward to not seeing your comments. Also hilarious that you attack someone for being semi literate when your own sig location is 'in ur base'. Goodera english there. Oh wait..you must be semi literate too!

Question: I'm stuck at premium, but I want to play around on Beta. On "Live" I currently have four global slots left to unlock, and their use is wholly dependent on whether or not we get everything unlocked as a goodbye present(complicated by a couple of beloved Time characters I'm locked out of). I don't want to waste them on any new toons.
When I logged into beta, it showed that I had 2 global slots, and by clicking one of them I was informed that I would be unlocking a slot on Justice of all places(I play exclusively on Virtue & Freedom). Is this truly a seperate group of slots that just defaults to saying Justice for some reason, or will it detract from the four precious slots I have remaining? -
Yeah, the guy put his alt in the middle of the crowd and put Speed Boost on auto. He explicitly told us that he was in TF mode(so he wouldn't AFK) and that he planned to be there all night.
Surely someone can do something about this. -
Calm down.
Many of us believe that there is an actual reason for NCsoft's continued silence. They might not be able to give any specifics because they are currently in ongoing negotiations with a third party regarding the ultimate fate of CoX. -
The toppings contain potassium benzoate...

Could I please have the Unbreakable Constraint set? My global is @Blackmoor.
Thank you very much in advance. -
Quote:Like story based RPGs?:I miss when first person shooters were like Doom and Quake, not Call of Duty and Battlefield. If TF2 ever came out with some sort of single player campaign mode, I'd probably never stop playing it.
Also miss when RPGs were like Final Fantasy 1-10, not 11-14 or Kingdom Hearts.
Baldur's Gate Trilogy
Planescape: Torment
Knights of the Old Republic
Vampire: Bloodlines
The Witcher
Like First Person Shooters?
Half-Life (including Opposing Force & Blue Shift)
Half-Life 2 (including Episodes 1 & 2)
You can thank me later. -
Got any better ideas?
