Ya know, all the times that I've heard this conversation with 3l33t Haxxorx, something's been bugging me...

... and I just got it.

Stan asks "You just bought a new hand? You just went down to Cook's Electronics and said 'Hey, can you give me a hand'?"

Cook's Electronics was originally the store that the Teen Titans frequent in the titular animated series!

Oye. Were you referencing the new store in CoX, or were you referencing the Teen Titans location?

Edit: On second thought, I realize which is more likely. Still, I'm proud that I caught it.

I thought it was a backhand reference to Fry's Electronics.

    Cryptic coolness

    [ QUOTE ]
    Hey everyone.

Just a quick head's up about the new CrypticAR rig. This is not the rig we use for CoX. While this was in development we've been casually discussed the possibility of community created animations, especially for use as emotes in game. While we love that idea, there are some caveats.

We could, in theory, take animations done on this rig and port them over to one of our existing player model rigs, but none of us have really had the time to look into exactly how much work that would be. Could be turnkey, could take weeks of scripting. Even assuming we could get the animations onto one of our legacy rigs (it's all just moving bones around after all), we still have to go through the process of exporting, converting, setting up sequences, and tying those new sequences into an emote. Not a ton of work, but also not something we can just dump into a folder and call it done.

There's also legal issues with doing something like that that we haven't really investigated and I certainly don't understand.

So, feel free to download it and play around with it. If someone does something really amazing, then we might more actively look into what would be involved in incorporating it into the game. But no promises.

To say that everyone on the team is not sorry would be a gross miss-statement. It was a complete error on my part to not include words to that effect in the original post. The bottom line is that the issue that affected the Auction House was preventable and we are working hard and committed to make sure that such doesn't happen again - with Auctions or any other aspect of the service we offer.

However, it's simply not what this particular encounter is. As others have pointed out, in order to make a single entity that can be attacked by 50 players at the same time we have to step outside of the bounds of 'normal' rules in order to make it challenging.

Ooooh it's too hard there is a chance a failure, we can't perma hold while we chat and admire our colorful spandex.

Get over it. It's been proven that the new Hamidon is beatable. I was there on Test when one happened. Why should the Dev's spoon feed you?

It's like there is this group of people that think because they cannot pull up a command line and go into God mode that the game sucks. "I can't finish the game because I might die".

Stop complaining, do something constructive like reading the notes on the Hami raid on test and see what works. Better yet come up with your own solution. Don't like the "risk" go to Mercy or Pocket D and turn your self into a pumpkin.

Correct me if I'm wrong here ... but if Hamidon/Mitos/et al. target a pet and unload on it, doesn't that pet get toasted almost instantly? How long is a pet "supposed to" be able to tank a Mito/Hamidon before getting blown away?

Going waaay back to BAB's post.

    [ QUOTE ]

Hamidon and the mitos do damage through Phase Shift to prevent Phantom Army and Phase Shift type powers becoming "required" for a raid.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I am totally on board with that motivation.

    [ QUOTE ]

Fictionally, Hamidon evolves. When he's continually defeated using a particular strategy or power he's naturally going to evolve a counter to it. This ability to attack phase-shifted targets is part of that evolution.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This started out as fine logic, up until the point where phase shift is suddenly something it never was. In fictional terms, what you've done isn't an evolution of hami. It's a devolvution of phase shift. And that is a (not particularly egregious) mistake. That's the issue that the players are trying to get across.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Your right that is so totally fake. That could never happen. Fix it. While your at fix that team AoE damage does not hurt you.

    /end_sarcasm

Dude the game is rock/paper/scissors. Do you think it is fair I can stop a regen's regen or storms can knock my pets silly, blah blah... So phase shift now has scissors to cut through it. Big deal, get over it. So Hamidon has figured a way to hit out of phase. /clue It's a game. /end_clue Do you really want to get into what's real and logical?? AT's & Powers all have their Achilles' heal. Pop your EoE's and be happy you have those.

I hate when standard mobs "cheat" the rules with player powers, but I'm perfectly fine with a raid mob like Hamidon doing it. I really don't see your point, other than you seem to be taking advantage of your account reactivation to drop in and be negative wherever you can.

    [/ QUOTE ]
My point was that Hamidon side-steps (ie. "cheats") on a great many "rules" of the game in order to present a challenge. Rather than debuffing resistances, Hamidon does untyped and/or toxic damage. Hamidon "ignores" defenses. Hamidon can smack you around through Phase Shift ... and so on. Rather than using the existing mechanics which everyone else is beholden to, Hamidon is "allowed" to simply bypass them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hamidon is going to evolve and learn like the Borg. Hamidon by design is the hardest task in the game. Designed to take 50 L50's 2-2.5 hours to complete roughly the same time as the RSF/STF. When I and one /kin corrupter can take down most AV's 50 AT's will need a serious challange. So phase shift does not protect you. Big deal, the Devs have given you EoE's to pop for 60 seconds of protection with no recharge time.

    [ QUOTE ]

Reminds me of a situation in Civilization 2, where rather than making the AI controlled players "pay for" World Wonders (in an honest fashion) by investing resources to build them, the AI just randomly "awarded" the Wonders at zero cost to one of the AI players every-so-often if they weren't already built. Basically ... the game "cheated" ... rather than playing by the same rules that you have to.

I suppose the qualifying factor is this!

    Resource allocation.

Would the subscribing consumer base prefer NCsoft/Cryptic to allocate resources to publications that are often outdated due to upgrades within a very short time period.

The answer to this question is that I as the attacker expect under the current system to hit 95% of the time. As the defender I expect to be missed 5% of the time. The latter half being my experience in pvp zones playing as a /ninjitsu stalker.

    [/ QUOTE ]

To clarify here: Does this mean, in a perfectly balanced system, you would expect Max To Hit to always completely negate Max Defense? That's how I read what you have written.

    To everyone:
The availability of To Hit buffs is a seperate question. Assume for purposes of this exercise that you have access to buffs far beyond what you would need to reach a maximum value.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Then I would want DeBuffs far beyond what I need to reach the minumum value.

The 95%/5% bounderies are good. Going back the the 20 sided dice where a 20 will always hit and a 1 will alway miss.

First, all of those games mentioned have healthy, strong MOD communities which constantly churn out new maps, weaponry, and options. None of them are remotely the same as they were the day they were released, and most of the modifications come from fans who donated their time to create/alter content.

Second, none of those games requires (to my knowledge) a monthly or hourly subscription fee. Ah, wait...the internet cafes in the asian market do charge an hourly rate and most players in those markets play via the cafes.

The MMO market is hugely expensive to develop for. This means a revenue stream of some sort has to be guaranteed for an MMO to be successful and in the American Market, the standard is the monthly subscription.

My opinion is that if players in the American market had to pay as much to play Counterstrike as they do to play say "WoW" there would be a vastly lower number of Counterstrike players.

Sony tried and failed to get a subscription based RTS launched. They launched, with severely underwhelming success, an FPS with a monthly subscription fee. I contend that the lack of success of both titles had as much to do with the required subscription as it did with any shortcomings in implementation. Planetside may have been the best game ever -- I personally would not know, I would *not* pay a monthly fee to play an FPS when I can play Counterstrike for free.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Coming directly from Half-Life2(Counterstrike) before CoX the deathmatches added quite a bit of life to the game after you beat the game. The mods and all of the custom maps are great. Being able to pick the type of deathmatch is also a big appeal. I prefer the sniper maps as opposed to an attrition map and who died the least. I still burned out on the game after a few months. MMO's never appealed to me especially with a monthly fee. Why would I continually pay to play a game when I can jump into a deathmatch at anytime for free? If I had to pay extra for the deathmatch I would never play it. I would like to see the PVP side move a little faster. The recovery period after you die is too long. With a FPS, you die and boom you back right away. Yes, you still have to run arould getting weapons and ammo again, but going to the hospital, resting, setting up, and traveling back just seems to take too long.

However, when I tried CoV and found my inner mastermind and was hooked.

P.S. I would love to see a SDK and player mods & custom maps on a seperate sandbox server.

    Set Enhancements

Finally, we wanted to have an awesome aspect to the entire Invention system that would really excite our players, and we think we achieved that with Invention Sets. Sets are themed groups of Enhancements that all slot into a single power, and here we could use the new Enhancement technology we'd created. Individual Enhancements can grant new types of bonuses, such as extra Health or faster Endurance Recovery. On top of that, you can gain additional bonuses by equipping multiple Enhancements from the same set in the same power. The more Enhancements you equip from a set, the more bonuses you get. These bonuses are powerful, they are always active, independent of the power they are slotted into, and encompass your entire character giving them things like Defenses or Resistances, or an overall boost to their Damage.
