Quote:1. Introducing a new game is not "replacing" COH. If it were another superhero-themed game, I might - *might* - be inclined to agree that's their idea.
2. We've known about this game for a little while now. It's not like it's being introduced as a replacement. It's just another title.
3. Agreed - for now, play nice.
This. Listen to reason guys. I know we're all upset at whats going on, but keep it under your hats for now. We want to put our best foot forward while everything is going on behind the scenes. -
Quote:Couple of things. Soloing is not difficult. At all. Crossing zones is also not difficult, unless you are four or more levels under where you are trying to go. Also really? Since you have to actually pay attention to where your target goes, that makes it 'FPS' style melee combat? Not hardly. You've apparently just been spoiled by having the game do the work for you.Well, you only purchase the box. No monthly fees.
Since I had already pre-purchased the game months ago, I'm playing.
Good points:
1. Beautiful environmental graphics.
2. Very nice, detailed character/costume graphics. However, like most MMOs, you are what you wear. No customization of costumes like you have in CoH.
3. The main quest line is engaging and fairly well written.
4. Voice queues from npcs are fairly well done. No walls of text to read.
5. Character "idle animations" are pretty cool, not the same thing over and over again, like CoH.
Bad points:
1. Everquest mentality in regards to zone design. You will fight tooth and nail to cross zones and expect ambushes galore.
Spawn rate is insane. You will have mobs spawn on top of you while fighting. Soloing is .... difficult.
2. Minimal "quests". You have tasks to perform in each area. Also, zone events are repetitive, expect to do them over and over again to reach the max level for that zone.
3. No grouping from what I've seen, except for dungeons. Not very social.
4. Dungeons are ridiculously hard.
5. The scenic view objectives in zones can be a royal pain in the behind. Think Super Mario bros....
6. The auction house has been up and down, and with limited inventory I've had to scrap a lot of items.
7. Dont care for the crafting system that much, I dont like multi stage crafting.
8. A lot of mobs are reused over and over. Giant spiders anyone?
9. A lot of promised features are not present - "once you save a town, it stays saved" for example.
The zone events are not that "new", you can see many of the same things in current games.
10. No /stick or /follow for melee toons. That makes playing melee a no-go as far as I'm concerned.
I dont like FPS style melee combat.
It's an ok game, but not something I can see myself playing long term.
Going to reserve final judgement until I've played a while though.
As for the OP, dont bomb a game unless you've played it and are commenting on THAT game. It will not help the cause.
Quote:Ok so now I'm confused. When eighty plus people don't get their jobs back (or if you don't get your hands on the IP for all your efforts) is it ok then to hate NCsoft... or should I hate the NCsoft haters for a self-fufilling prophecy? What if I don't hate anybody? Tell ya what. It's a whole lot easier if you lead what you want and those who wish to follow do so and those that want to speak out differently also do so. Last time I checked that was how the forum (and this community) worked best. -

Quote:How about you get off your high horse? If people want to be upset because a company pulled the plug on a game they enjoy playing then that's their perogative. Don't like it? Don't read. And I HATE the saying "Don't the player, hate the game." Why should you NOT hate the people stooping to 'playing the game'? Especially when, in this case, the 'game' made little sense, aside from potentially making quarterly costs look more reasonable and maybe shifting that budget to another game.I picked it up last night and played 3 hours straight tonight. I am honestly enjoying my tree-people elementalist just learning the game mechanics like dodge and cast times before I jump into pvp(the game auto levels you to 80 for that and it rewards xp for pve!). I only got to level 6 but I've killed a ton of what coh calls GMs and am loving the structure of teaming so far(something no mmo ever got right except coh IMO).
I truthfully wish coh could live forever but the fact that it is dying has given me the push to finally give it up for good. All these years I abandoned so many mmos because this game was comfortable and since the pvp revamp that feeling just got weaker and weaker until 8/31.
If anyone wants to join me I'm on Blackgate server named Matriculated.(cool names are impossible to come by since they're global :/ )
Edit: also you guys need to be less butthurt, this game is 8 years old, get another hobby. NC is a business. Don't hate the player, hate the game. -
Don't do this. There are a lot of things going on behind the scenes right now, on top of the campaign people trying to save the game are running. Do your best to not make us appear like whining, angry children please. While it probably won't hurt everything in the long run, I'd much rather not take that kind of chance.

Quote:Actually just started diving into Star Trek because I learned of the carriers. I THINK ((Not at that point yet)) it works that each hanger bay can field two wings, and each type has a different number of units in its wing. 3 for most fighters and stealth wings, two for most specialized roles ((Debuffing, buffing and healing)), and one for the frigates. So you can have up to four wings of three, or twelve units. Course I wager most people would take a combination and end up with less, but still, even at two of three and two of two, you end up with ten units and thats not bad. There are the Carrier ships in Star Trek Online. Can have one or two hangars depending on ship and depending on hangar can have one to three ships. So you could have a total of 6 ships. There are some items that can summon a combat pet for a short time. Also, you can have a bunch of space pets follow you, but vanish when combat starts. On ground, can only have one summoned pet at a time. The Secret World can summon a bunch of pets, but they are stationary and last for a few seconds.
Was watching Wakfu a few months ago and thought Dofus is connected to it in some way. The Wakfu MMO is the sequel to Dofus.
Course, please correct me if I am wrong. I may have looked at the numbers funny, and lord knows I am not at that experience level yet.
Secondly though, you also customize your away crew, and they function in much the same way as a masterminds pets. You equip them with your castoff gear or gear you don't use, and let them do their thang. Each one also comes with a unique ability depending on their role: Science, tactical, or engineer.
Star Trek Online is also free to play, so its worth giving it a whirl. -
Leveling a blaster. I was waiting for I24 to really get serious with it. Leveling a grav/fire corruptor. Working my Soldier of Arachnos up to 50. Working on my widow more.
I'll probably still work on the blasters on the test server. Since I have to chop it down, I'll probably at least work up the Soldier. And spend some time focusing on incarnates on my merc/pain. -
Quote:Don't be so negative. Its entirely possible that something will work out in the end. What I can tell you is that it is extremely unlikely for them to ever say 'derp! maybe we will reverse all decisions and hire everyone back just to show how weak and stupid we are' so realistically I don't see anything happening that will ever let us play the game beyond Nov 30 - and that includes anything the Titan Network comes up with. Maybe I'm pessimistic but I just don't see anything happening.
On topic, its just been a week. Basically we are just at the start of this entire disaster. If we get up to a week or two before November 30th with nothing to show for our efforts, then yeah, its probably a bust. But its still way to early to be giving up now. -
Quote:There'd have to be some extreme reasoning for them to not accept that level of PR in exchange for reviving a game that was still profitable. We'll see where this goes.Mercedes Lackey didn't just offer to promote City of Heroes, she offered to promote all NC Soft games, as a spokesman for the entire company (since primarily known as a fantasy author, and most of their games are fantasy-based). For free. For five to ten years.
And all they have to do is un-cancel the game, or set it free - just let it keep running in some way, shape, or form.
I read the Heralds of Valdemar trilogy and the Mage Storm trilogy, and really enjoyed them both. I'm still sorry I had to sell those when I moved overseas.
I still greet people in game (and elsewhere on the Internorf) with "Heyla" -
Quote:Well, to me, it doesn't matter what this fellow says about this GW2 game, the interface is just horrible.
Having only played CoH, I see these other UIs, and I simply loathe them.
And forced teaming? yuck.
Horrible UI? ...what? What are you even looking at?
You guys are coming up with some...creative things to hate on, I'll give you that. I get it. You guys don't like anything not CoH. Case closed. -
-
How about we all just agree to disagree, yeah? This isn't getting us anywhere.
For the people interested, I suggest you do your own research. Delve into the wiki, go check some reviews, watch some gameplay videos. It isn't going to be for everyone, mind you. But it is worth looking into. -
Eh, I got snippish. The only thing to 'laugh' at there might be the amount of trouble that Arenanet has to go through in the wake of that disaster.

Quote:Oh man, I am SO glad I found out how to use the ignore function. People like you REALLY needed more discipline as a child. Off you go then! To the list with you! Shoo, troll! Begone! Its sad that the minute someone slaps on a lil bit of an attitude round here you guys immediately see it as trolling. Seriously is hilarious you all need to get a grip and start going out into the real world more often. Maybe the closure of this game will do your mental and social well being some good!
-
Right. Because it's the publishers having their account stolen and used for god knows what. Oh they sure showed those naughty publishers!
-
Quote:You pretty much nailed it on the head. Find it in the flavor you like, with the dressings you like, but you'll still have the same base there. And I am not sure how that is a bad thing, or how people would innovate it. Make crop circles? Interogate people? How would you expand on that formula that's already there? All missions/quests in every MMO are the same variation of kill things, click glowies, or solve the puzzle. It doesn't matter if they are instanced or open world, It's all the same. The only difference is the genre/story. If the genre/story is interesting to you, you won't notice the repetitive grind.

Quote:Since you asked, I tamed several new animals for my ranger, worked my way up to the first ten mark for my first master trait, unlocked the regen-mark for him, explored several new vistas, participated in multiple group quests, including killing the behemoth of the swamp, and hunted down a number of skill points from various equal level areas. It's like WoW in that both of them are about delivering a constant trickle of pap that has no risk of offending or exciting anyone. Don't worry, everyone, our game is a safe place for you to log on after work and earn various rewards! You don't like teaming? That's great, we don't want you to have to do any of that! Don't worry about balance, it's been tuned by our team of Swiss watchmakers to ensure perfect adherence to our predetermined curve at all times. Hey, I know your type... you like customizing your appearance, don't you! I've got one word for you: dye! Your chainmail can be a whole rainbow of unique pastels!
Go on, tell me something that was really fun that you did in Guild Wars yesterday. I played for several hours this morning and I don't remember a single thing that happened. Either I've got extra-early onset Alzheimer's or that's because nothing did. Bonus point if you can tell me something that thousands of other people did not do in exactly the same way.
And that was just on my ranger. I also did several levels as my necro, my guardian, and started leveling a mesmer.
And really? You are NOT trying to bring up teaming in CoH as a comparison, because I soloed the game up to and into incarnate. Not trying to rag on you, or CoH, but that was in no way a single sided comparison, and I seriously hope you realize that. At its current point, you can solo a great deal of what CoH has to offer. How is that any different then what you just said, then? Are they 'taking the safe way' too? Because if that is your reasoning, then CoH is just as much a 'WoW-alike' as Guild Wars 2. -
Quote:Out of curiousity, what would NOT be a "Wow-alike" to you? Because as far as fantasy MMO's go, system wise GW2 is about as far from WoW as you can get. The similarities are...doing quests. And thats about it. And even then they are handled in entirely different ways, so it only goes so far as saying "I have to go and do this for this person."I bought Guild Wars 2 after succumbing to Rock Paper Shotgun's hype rather more rapidly than I was hoping I would. Had I waited a couple days I would have been more hesitant to spend the money on it, which would really have been for the best. It may be the sleekest, most streamlined WoW-alike yet, but boy howdy is it ever one of those.
Who cares how refined it is when there isn't really anything to do? Your character is identical to every other character of the same class and level except as far as your preferred weapon (hint: it's greatswords) and the amount of grinding you're willing to subject yourself to to earn more shinies. Even if you go wild with dungeon loot you're still one of ten thousand spooky clones instead of one of a hundred thousand.
Nothing you do in the game matters and they never pretend that it might matter. Why am I fighting worms in this ice cave? Because a marker on my map said I'd get prizes if I did so. Why are the mole people of Greater Fireland entirely hostile and murderous yet in neighboring Frostburg they comprise the friendly townsfolk? That's a stupid question as none of the NPCs are meant to do anything but provide the expected window dressing to your generic fantasy experience. The story quests are somehow a step backwards from that; if you think it's funny to be trying to save the... world? From dragons I think??? ... because you wanted to be a circus clown but it just didn't work out at level one, the luster may have worn slightly by level 40. As will have the writing, hand-picked and un-crumpled from the dumpster behind Bioware.
The weapon skill system seems fun at first until you realize that your profession realistically has one or maybe two combinations that are competitive in any way and the realization sets in that you are on track to have either four or eight combat skills for the entire game plus an auto attack and some vaguely more varied buffs. Exceptions exist but compared to City of Heroes, mein Gott.
Top it off with one of the grindiest endgames I've personally ever seen and you have a recipe for something that will be forgotten by yours truly before Torchlight 2 comes out. I could have given those sixty dollars to charity, but I guess that probably wasn't likely. Anyone who is on the fence though? Save yourself twenty dollars and buy Dark Souls instead.
As for the combat system, I kinda have to laugh at how you pair it down. You get five different attacks or debuffs/CCs based on your weapon, but you also get four more slots for another variety of attacks. Not entirely sure where you are getting "Only one or two will be viable" from, but thats wildly inaccurate to say the least.
Look, I get that you dislike it. I get that you have a chip on your shoulder over NCsofts treatment of Paragon. I myself would not have bought the game if I had known what was going to happen. But don't try to dumb it down to make it look worse. It doesn't do you any favors. -
Masterminds. And controllers. Or "Lets you play as an army of seven" and "Let you completely shut down most opponents with no hope of retaliation".
-
Quote:Keep in mind that IF the reason they axed Paragon was for the short term, then some one wasn't thinking with their head. Instead of taking a hit and then earning back money, albeit a ((Relatively speaking)) small amount later, they'd have chosen to lose that source of revenue. That doesn't really say "Logical thinking" to me, so much as it says "Desperate". There is no promise that some one willing to let go of a profitable company to look good in the short term is going to be willing to sell. Not trying to be a downer here, just that realistically speaking we may not be dealing with a group of people who are interested in selling based on logic. If they're killing CoH for a short term gain, why not sell the IP? Doing so would get them even more money, plus it would avoid the bad rep that would diminish consumer goodwill. It's the difference between selling a beloved pet and shooting it when you can't take care of it anymore. Both are sad, but the latter is just horrible in so many ways.
Then you have the possibility that yes, Paragon was niled because it really didn't fit with whatever they want their structure to be. At THAT point you'd think they'd be willing to play ball, but...you also have to consider that once again, they'd have gotten rid of a profitable studio because...well in all due honesty probably because said studio was to western. And I am not really sure where that puts us on the playing field.
Honestly, the whole issue is confusing and tiresome. Speaking from a buisness perspective, letting go of anything still profitable without the intent of making further profit from it makes zero sense. ZERO. CoH wasn't siphoning money off, Paragon was MAKING money. Maybe Freedom didn't bring back as many people as they had hoped. Maybe they wanted it to become a blockbuster again. Whatever the reasoning, the numbers still point at CoH being steady. Maybe I am wrong here, but a company willing to sell a beloved and profitable studio just to fluff the numbers for a quarter speaks volumes for the amount of buisness sense floating around NCsofts upper echelons. -
The Devs and the overall friendliness of the community. I was just over on WoWs site, and reminded of why I started to hate the game. Their devs and blue posters are so full of !@#$. Ugh.
-
Save the studio. As much as I enjo CoH, its more important to me personally that some of the best and nicest developers, distrubuters, and everything else they employ have stable jobs then it is for me to play CoH. I have other games to play, but for anyone, right now is a very bad time to be unemployed.
-
All but one of my masterminds are from Praetoria, all having escaped there at different points in the past. The real reason for this is that I started to play seriously when Going Rogue came out, and I am a hero-kinda guy. And playing through Praetoria was a good, streamlined way to level that gave me the option of making my masterminds heroes. Viola.
-
That was...really great of you. Thank you. I was going to pick a few up off the market before all this mess started.
