in fairness it was the palliative effect. There was already plenty of indications of the harm smoking did but cigarettes do have a calming effect on the nerves and the benefits were deemed to outweigh the risks - but the point several have made is pretty valid, that often it takes a while to understand the effects of new materials.
For example many of the ancient Greek monuments were restored by the British using the wonderful new material known as steel - little thought was given to the fact that it rusts and expands as it does so.

On my main, it's Granite. The only time I regularly toggle-on Granite is when I'm actually tanking the Hamidon; in almost any other situation, PSLAnimal's regular shields make him more than tough enough.
Granite is the "oh, s**t" fallback mode. -
