Kudoes to the dev's and all who had a hand in the CoH's Freedom. I know the change in NCsoft's business model and overhaul on the Heroes side of things has gotten all the press, but the biggest winner, IMO, has been the "City of Villians." This most recent and dramatic tuneup has, for the first time, really put it on par with Paragon City and Praetoria. It has gone from coming across as a bit of an afterthought to a robust and dynamic equal-partner. The game play and narrative strikes me as being much more engaging. Great job!

Thanks all for your help. While I did not edit my registry (as I am too technologicly timid to attempt such a thing), I did uninstall the Beta, Test and main game from my system via the NCsoft Launcher. I then uninstalled the launcher itself and removed all remaining CoH folders and files I could find. I then restarted my computer.
Once my system had rebooted I went to the NCsoft website and redownloaded the Launcher. I then (via the Launcher and NOT my original cd) reloaded City of Heroes. That pretty much did the trick and I, since Sunday, have been able to log-in.
Note: reloading the game via the NCsoft Launcher seemed to be alot faster than reinstalling from my cd and then letting the game update.
Anyway thanks again everyone. -
I have not been able to log onto the "Live" servers for about three weeks now. The weird thing is I can log onto the "VIP Beta" and "Test" servers. I am still trying to resolve this matter through NCsoft's online support but so far no solution.
My computer setup has not changed over the past year. I have no other internet issues. Again, I can log onto the "test" and "VIP" servers.
I would also note that my problem started after the NCS Launcher downloaded and applied an update. My ability to connect with the "VIP Beta" server would come and go following updates to that server.
Now, when I start the main game through the NCSoft Launcher I do get an "Error parsing command line argument 'auth 64.25.36.88-project CoH'", but I've been getting that for awhile now and was still able to log onto the "Live" servers.
Also, upon my computer booting up, I get a prompt to delete a NCSoft vitual store folder. I click "yes" as it suggests.
I think an update is the root cause of my ills but have no idea how to right things.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. -
I have to confess that I've been afraid to take a character to level 50 (I just got my 33 month badge and the highest toon I have is "42"). I figure all these enticements to get to 50 is a trick or test of some sort as in once you attain it the government sends out their men in black to disect your brain.
Then again some have suggested to me that I could be a wee bit paranoid. -
Just my 2cents:
I lean towards WP. Invulnerbilty gives you great toughness. Regeneration gives you great healing. Will Power gives you a great middle ground, however, like most middle-of-the-road choices it is not as extreme. -
Well, it was only a matter of time. Like almost all Dot.com's everyone is wupping it up and living off the fat of the land ... that is until the first harsh summer of reality sets in and the drought hits. Despite the fact this could have all been avoided through pragmatic management and prudent resource allocation it is still not too late. Rather than wasting time pointing the flatulent finger of blame (which only leads to the ceremonial passing of the proverbial buck) I would like to offer some constructive ideas.
I will focus mainly of the following quote because it best illustrates the problem while illuminating the solution ...
Quote:Birkholtz says: "Every point is handcrafted"Nate "Second Measure" Birkholz, Producer for City of Heroes, had this to add: "We've tried to increase supply, but it's difficult. Every point is handcrafted from the finest gems of insight, pearls of wisdom and seasoned with the harsh sweat of overcoming your setbacks. That's a time consuming process, not one you can rush."
I say: "Why? Modern manufactering processes would allow for hundreds of XP points per every one handcrafted."
Birkholtz say: "... from the finest gems of insight ..."
I say: "Why not use crystals instead? Can people really tell difference between a "gem of insight" versus "cubic zirconia of insight?" I really don't think so.
Birkholtz says: "... pearls of wisdom ..."
I say: "You guys think pearls grow on trees or what? It is this type of gross excess that has led to what I call an "obesity of wisdom" problem in this world. A "pebble of wisdom" is more than enough for all save the most gluttonous among us.
Birkhotlz says: "... and seasoned with the harsh sweat of overcoming your setbacks."
I say: "Overcoming setbacks is over-rated. Not only can it lead to low self-esteem in those that can't but it can also lead to cocky, obnoxious behavior in those that can, therefore, I would maintain that it is a lose-lose for all concerned. I would substitue this "harsh sweat" with the less unsettling "glistening dew of self-restraint." It has the same great taste but is a third less filling."
By following my simple, straight-forward advice I think you would find all these XP-ills would be salved and healed. Hope this helps and happy adventuring to all! -
Thank you one and all for the polite and helpful responses to my inquiry. It is appreciated.
I guess the responses helped me realize that perhaps it was the perception of arrogance in the "Why else would I waste my time ..." attitude rather than the act of charging in and of itself that bent me out of shape. I mean my personal outlook has generally been if I can help someone out then I'm honored to do so. I'm not above giving low level characters inspirations or an enhancement I crafted but didn't need (figuring they can either slot it or sell it themselves).
Again, thanks to everyone who responded and happy hunting. -
About two weeks ago I ventured into the Atlas park AE building looking to join a team and have some fun. Of course there was the usual chorus of players looking to exploit "farm" missions for experience - something I really don't have a problem with. What I did find irksome however was that there was one (probably more) actually looking to charge folks money for leading a farm-team. This person was also very blunt about it, going so far as to pose the rhetorical question of "why would he waste his time on a bunch of newbies if he wasn't going to paid for it?" This just struck me as being totally anathema to the spirit and comradeliness of gaming.
It also saddened me that another person instantly tried to label me a "troll" when I questioned the correctness of this mercernary endeavor.
So, for my own enlightenment, are "farms" considered okay? Is charging for them allowed? Are folks, generally speaking, okay with all this?
Peace to all. -

Inspired by the folk song "Puff the Magic Dragon" Lord Nemesis had commissioned the pony he longed for as a child but never received. Now if he could only get it to dispense the hugs his parents forever withheld all would be right in the universe. -
Quote:Is anyone else worried that the "demon Summoning" power set will lead to an increase in satanism much like "Dungeons and Dragons" did in the late-70s/early-80s?Watch the new Demon Summoning video, highlighting one of the newest power sets included with City of Heroes Going Rogue. And what about the whip? Might this lead to sadomasochistic behavior among the world's youth much like the Indiana Jones movies did in the 80's?

Quote:O-man, I had to take three hits on my puffer after I read this announcement! All my life I've dreamed of being captured and tormented by some Catwoman-esque type villianess ... now that dream is on the verge of reality. Thank you City of Heroes/Villians/Sidekicks!With the continued success of City of Heroes and City of Villains, Paragon Studios has unveiled its plans for the future of the franchise with City of Sidekicks. No longer are you relegated to the role of "Saving the Day" as a super-powered hero, as a sidekick you get to participate in exciting, new ways to play the game.
"City of Sidekicks brings a whole new way to experience Paragon City," said Lead Designer Melissa Bianco. "Instead of taking down the criminals, you get to be captured by them!" A key element of many sidekick storylines is your ineptitude interfering with the actions of the real heroes, and nearly doing the villain's job for them."
I must confess that I haven't been this excited since my shift-supervisor at Wal-Mart said it was okay for me to greet people in my one-size-fits-most unitard! -

Quote:Out of curiosity, what does the HP Mini 311 cost? It makes me chuckle that some of the higher end netbooks cost as much as a good mid-range laptop making me wonder why one would shell out that kind of dough for a netbook. Anything more than $350 (USD) for a netbook is a waste in my opinion. The HP Mini 311 is the netbook you want if you do not want a laptop. I have it and COH plays fine on it. I have it with 2GB of DDR3 memory and Windows 7. You can upgrade to 3GB DDR3 (1 GB permanently on motherboard, but there is a slot for a 1 or 2 GB memory stick).

I would be surprised if anyone could get a stock netbook to handle CoH, but that does inspire what I think would be an interestering challenge for modders: using the chassis of either a netbook or older computer system in general (like a Commodore 64 for example) to build a system that could take the demands of CoH.

Quote:I hear ya. And what's up with folks getting the "rest" power at level 2? Back-in-the-day attaining the ability to "rest" was something I could proudly put on my job resumes. Now it means nothing as any yahoo can get it without hardly even trying.Look I'm all for everyone having access to everything. But as rare as some recipes are or pvp drops why the hell are you giving away epics.

A general response to several postings:
Right-off-the-bat I would like to thank folks for the responses so far as several of them have been very informative. Some though have been somewhat harsh and to those I would like to clear a few things up.
One, I am not looking for anyone to be "forced" to do anything. If folks want to team-up or solo that's fine by me. If folks want to be on low population servers versus higher population servers then that's great. We all pay our subscription fee and are entitled to define our gameplay experience however we wish and I absolutely respect that.
Two, I was and am only opining and seeking information from those here who are more knowledgable than I on how and why things may be done here. Do I have a stacks of data to support my surmises? No. Then again I have in no way represented that I do.
Three, I am only looking to have a discussion not a confrontation with anyone. If my postings have come across as a bit coarse or argumentative than I sincerely apologize as that has never been my intent. I wish all here well and thank everyone for their time and consideration. Peace. -
Quote:"People online" at any given time. But wouldn't it be useful to have something more (even if it was just a monthly posting here in the forums ranking the servers on a monthly and year-to-date activity) that would allow for an informed choice in server selection?Only by logging in and looking for yourself.
At the server listing, they are listed as follows: the last server you visited is at the top. All of the others are listed in order of 'server load' with the heaviest load at the bottom. In general, 'server load' is a decent proxy for 'people online'.
Btw, I do thank you and appreciate the info regarding how the servers are listed. I knew about the "bubbles" (green, yellow and red to indicate server load) but I did not know the list order meant something. -
Quote:First, thank you for your opinion - it is a good, well-reasoned and thought provoking one.
While I can understand lag being a concern to some, I personally enjoy the
player/character interaction more on the Freedom server then my previous
home. My rationale is as follows: If I didn't want to be surrounded by more
players for grouping and conversation, I could easily play a game that only
offered single or small group play.
I guess part of my goal/vision/desire would be to find a way to have more servers (at least one or two more) be like "Freedom" wherein we can "be surrounded by more players" without the lag or disconnects. It just strikes me as wasteful/inefficient to throw the lion share of the load onto one server. It can also be a bit frustrating to find a team to, say, taskforce with and then have to deal with issues related to overcrowding only to try and find a server where disconnects/lag aren't a problem but getting a team together is.
Part of this might possibly be addressed by simply posting relevant statistics (even if it were in the form of truly meaningful ratings in various catagories) so we could be more informed when choosing a server to begin with. -
I am just curious to know if there is a source to find out the average activity level of the servers per day/week/month?
With the free character transfer weekend being extended again I was also wondering if the point was to even out the server loads or is it to allow folks to move characters from less active servers to more populated ones?
I ask this because the net effect so far seems to be that more characters are going from less populated servers to the ones that suffered conjestion problems/lag/disconnects already thereby making the free transfers somewhat counter-productive.
One idea I was toying with was perhaps some thought might be given to allowing free transfers to the less active servers only along with some other incentive (such as a limited time/use temporary power or unique mission/badge). Maybe even each server a unique feature. Again, the goal would be to hopefully spread the load more evenly amongst all the available servers.
Anyway, any answers/feedback would be apreciated. Thanks for reading. -

When it comes to technical computer stuff I know just enough to be dangerous. I recently purchased a new computer, a quad-core Asus 5270 and had installed in it a BFG Nvidia GT220 graphics card. I know it's after the fact but is that a decent card? I got the whole thing at Best Buy on sale for $90.
