I didn't do it.
Or did I???

(Heck, even I don't know)
I've played the arc already, but I may try to play it again this weekend, because there are a lot of clues to be had. Plus I won't be distracted about my wife complaining about dinner the next go-around (I hope!). -

But even now.. as I /search on Virtue, the what, second most popular server? I see a grand total of 4 people. All solo.

Inductive reasoning with an extremely tiny sampling (read: 1 sample) yields disappointing results? Color me surprised! -
Another thing I don't get. The OP is a new player - why join already knowing that the game is five years old if you knew what the subscription rate was already going to be?
Does the extra $5 lessen the OP's interest in the game?
I'm just dumbfounded why a new player with so much interest in the game is suddenly making demands of a cost that he/ she knew were part of the deal
OP, can you help me understand your sudden dissatisfaction after a scant 3 days on the forums? -
[ QUOTE ]
since its so high i will only subscribe for one more month before quiting.
[/ QUOTE ]
Wait... so the extra $5 months a month is a bridge too far?
Really?
So, if they don't lower the subscription rate, will you [u]promise[u] to leave? I could get behind that. -

Wow. Except people have been fighting Giant Monsters long before they gave rewards worth even taking on one.
Wanna know what those rewards were? Badges. Something unique to the collectors.
[/ QUOTE ]
The problem being that, once a character had the badge, the player stopped caring due to the small XP/ Inf reward for such a huge battle. -
Never had any problems using Vent & CoH with XP 32-bit, so it must be system-specific. Can you toss in any HijackThis or DXDiag reports from your computer? Maybe one of the regulars around here can help you out. You can find instructions for HijackThis here.

Never developed software of any size, have you?

Have you? Is it relevant?
Q: How many Vietnam vets does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: YOU DON'T KNOW MAN! YOU WEREN'T THERE!
An assumption that one doesn't understand development cycles if one isn't a developer is false. On the contrary - I fully believe that devs are already making plans for Issue 17-20, since Issue 16 has been in the works since at or before HeroCon last year.
Another problem:

gleaned from the thousands and thousands of people of indeterminate skill screaming about what they want to be able to do
[/ QUOTE ]
People screaming about video games are hard to qualify with any seriousness. It reminds me of something Yahtzee says about fans:
[ QUOTE ]
Fans are clingy complaining dipsh**s who will never be grateful for any concession you make. The moment you shut out their shrill tremulous voices the happier you'll be for it.

One could get information from a thousand chattering monkeys, but only a fraction of it would be useful information. I'm not saying everyone is a chattering monkey, but there is a certain qualifier for signal-to-noise ratio. Right now, without much quantifying data, or making a call to action based off of one half-heareted developer comment, I'm just not seeing the point.
There again, I'll be the first to admit that I've been wrong on several occasions, so type away, for what it's worth. Hell, I don't even play a Dominator, so there's not much need for me to go on about something so floccinaucinihilipilificatious, from my secular point of viewSo I'll go ahead and move on to more verdant fields.

Yeah, and it doesn't look like they bothered doing anything more than asking a competitor - a single one, mind - their opinion, grabbing a quote or two from the forum, and hyping it. (And before anyone bothers, yes, I know he's not with Cryptic. He's still a competitor, and someone not involved with this game.)
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, due to piss-poor research in the article, Eric isn't even with Cryptic. He was with the previous company working on Star Trek, Perpetual. He did work on AC2, but that's his only published MMO. But Eric even says as much in the Slashdot discussion that he's not working on Star Trek with Cryptic.
Again, the Wired author did a horrible job researching and checking sources, which really throws a shadow over the article's veracity. -
Thanks for bringing this to the forums Steiner. Sad to hear Mids is stepping down due to RL, but glad to hear that you'll be heading up updates to the program. Best of luck to both of you.

The appeal to authority isn't necessary, though. I think his point makes sense.
[/ QUOTE ]
I have to disagree. While I follow all the logic in the article, most of the language used is inflammatory, and there's a glaring lack of data or hard evidence. Overall, I think the article is poorly researched, and the quotations by this particular authority are used in a crass attempt to disguise the lack of effort. So the credentials of said authority become important, because if you remove them, the article basically consists of an overly-dramatic cocktail of forum posts.
And saying there's drama on the forums is sort of like saying there's water in the ocean.
[/ QUOTE ]
I have to agree. The author took the lazy man's method of research in order to prove his argument, one point based off of a poor reference. Although I could easily see a blogger who's worked on three or even two published MMOs as credible, this one doesn't fit the bill of expert testimony. Although I see merits in the article itself, trying to pass off Eric's blog as credible adversely erodes credibility. -
[ QUOTE ]
It may seem sad that giving the players what they want is detrimental to the players overall length of enjoyment of the game, but thats the truth, says Eric Heimburg, the lead engineer and producer on Asherons Call, and the systems designer for the upcoming Star Trek online MMO. Once you reached that top of the hill, if theres nothing left to do or see, players are likely to move on. Length of enjoyment (equals) amount of money earned, so developers have a strong incentive to keep players from gaining power and levels too quickly.
[/ QUOTE ]
This guy again? The guy works on one published MMO (AC2) and suddenly he's an industry expert because he writes one blog? Perfect example of one internet journalist using material from another from a half-credible source (this comes to mind). He's not even working on Star Trek Online, because Perpetual lost out to Cryptic, so even his credentials are mis-cited in the article. Heck, his current project is a puzzle game -
Crey Hero Lab for one, not sure about the other(s).

The MA was too limited when it came out, and as they continue to take stuff away instead of expanding it, I find it a waste of time.

One person's "waste of time" is another's goldmine. Playing video games and posting on Internet forums are huge wastes of time to some, yet other people still enjoy these pastimes. -

Must have missed that memo. But considering I stopped reading the Tank forums in early '07, it's understandable.
Occasionally I stumble in, start reading a thread, run into one of your posts, and remember why I left.
No hard feeling Johnny, just got better things to read these days. Hope you're having fun tobogganing down the slippery slopes. Try not to catch that big head on a branch on the way downhill -
