Great post, and great critique. Thanks, Moo.

Yes, my biggest complaints are around costume descriptions and sets (c'mon guys, even Cryptic has screenshots for both their games), and other detailed descriptions (like the fact that aura and cape unlocks don't =explicitly= state they unlock for the entire account).

I prefer to help fight, even if it is (somewhat realistically) trying to hold back the tide with your bare hands. At least I feel like I'm doing =something=. And that forces the spammers to do something as well.

Besides, the more we report, the more IPs get logged. Paragon Studios aren't, at this point, new at running a successful MMO.

  3. As a VIP player, I have two advantages:

    1. I can use Broadcast.

    2. I can inform everyone, even F2P players, that "/ignorespammer" works.

As someone who has spent the last several nights hanging out in Atlas Park (on Justice) attempting to help new players, let me say that the vast majority of them seem to plainly ignore any and all attempts to communicate with them.

    And I'm =trying= to help.

I can't assign blame to the lack of a chat tutorial, lack of channel access, or lack of basic reading comprehension. I can only report what I've seen. Specifically, that many of the characters I've seen have even skipped the tutorial and are OJTing everything about the game.

How about we just agree on "they are tied to each other"?
Not that we have to agree at all.
How about we agree that, "Premium players get what they pay for"?

Any more than that is assumptions, opinion, and entitlement, wouldn't you say?

This is one thing I think Champions did right. You go to a separate instance to level up, and can experiment to your heart's content with power choices when you're there. Once you leave, though, your selection is locked in.

Right now, the only way we have of "testing" a power is the power customization screen in the costume editor.

See? Entitlement is spread across all player types.

If you only have one guess, then my guess is you don't run a business.

F2P is not F2PE (free to play EVERYTHING). Their goal is to entice former players back and start subscribing, not to let them play EVERYTHING without a subscription.

Although, keep arguing about GR and Incarnates and requirements, you're just feeding my shadenfreude.

Same here. In fact, merits period. I have around 800 reward merits on my badger. The only merits I've spent are Empyreans/Astrals for the costume bits.

  14. Like most other big content providers, they're probably contracting out to a Content Delivery Network. CDNs specialize in providing downloads with regional hubs and cached content that helps everyone get the best transfer speeds possible. One of the biggest CDNs is Akamai.

Companies work with CDNs to assure they can handle demand spikes on big releases without breaking the internet. Steam, EA, they all do it.

I had this problem. For whatever reason, my targetting keys would not select the Shivan, so I had to click on it. The targetting box was so huge that I mostly couldn't see it. Not much of a help. Also, we get the zone-trial event window which shows what we have to do. It said to defeat the monster. So I joined in with the other hero and did just that, but apparently I was too late, because then I got ANOTHER window with defeat X Shivans and then had to defeat the monster again by myself. What?

Yes. I DO THIS WITH EVERY NEW GAME I PLAY. It has nothing to do with being a veteran. This is my first chance, in-game, to check video settings and other options. I understand the feeling of being rushed by the story, but while lives hang in the balance, what are my graphics settings?

This. I wish they'd just stop calling it a Tutorial, and refer to it as the Quickstart Introduction. The ongoing training missions are the tutorial, if needed.

Also, my take on the ongoing missions: I get the first one from Twinshot, and it's about trainers. REALLY? Something I've already done a half-dozen times, at least? At that point, I declined, then hit Find Contact to see if I could get the origin arcs. Nope; only two options showed up: Twinshot, and Officer Wincott. So off to the Hollows.

I'm with Forbin on the single-contact line. As a new player, if subsequent alts go down the same identical path, I'll quickly look for other means. Vets know how to do that; new players can learn all the wrong lessons (such as AE).

Same here. I don't use TOs at all. I don't even use =enhancements= at all (except for the new freebie ones) until level 12, when I buy all DOs.

But sign me up for the idea of being able to tell what the enhancements are without having to "Info" them to make sure I'm buying what I want. I =get= the idea behind the origins, but geez.

    10 Years of CoH

I remember reading about CoH before it came out, and being new to MMOs, was like, "Teams of heroes? In a city? How in the flying fudge will that work?" I didn't really get it at all.

But I like superheroes, and so my friend and I ran down to the game store and bought COH the day it came out. (I had to leave the box in my car so I didn't spend all afternoon pouring over the materials in the office.) I didn't even learn about the forums until later, as evidenced by my join date.

Then the magic happened. The AT descriptions while the game loaded! The charts in the manual! (Yeah, remember that?) The heroes in Atlas Park standing around Ms Liberty! It was amazing.

Seven and a half years later, I'm still here. I'm afraid to add up all that I've spent on this game, but in consideration, I've gotten more for my entertainment dollar here than anywhere else in my life. I even cancelled my cable because I'd rather play than watch TV.

    Love this game.

  20. I saw a number of people that were gloating about doing it on Exalted the first night. Yes, saying so out loud in chat. I thought they were douchebags then.

You could also see all the namegrabbers by the gray-generic characters that were appearing and logging off right away at the base of the stairs.

Luckily for me, I got the ones I needed for my existing characters.

  22. My biggest complaint with power customization? I CAN'T MATCH "ORIGINAL" COLORS.

On my force field/energy defender, I wanted to make the energy blasts with the same colors and the force fields (which I didn't change). But there's no way to find out what the Original colors are. As soon as you hit Customized, some sort of random colors comes up. Which then requires me to trial-and-error my way into matching the colors.

(I've had to do this for several characters. The above is just one example. And I'm rarely pleased with the results, even after several iterations.)

Chalk me up as one who loves the Rocket Board. My technology origin heroes are mostly inventors, and they now use it as non-combat travel just because it's fun. Also, fun fact: Rocket Boots activate while using the Rocket Board. DOUBLE ROCKET POWER!

  24. My first impression: AWESOME with a side dish of veteran disdain.

I love the new character creator, and am pleased with the market. I found the Rewards tiers and screen very confusing, until someone in a global explained what to do.

Atlas Park is awesome, even if they did move almost every single badge and history plaque. Seeing the rush of new characters reminded me of the early days.

I immediately disliked the the new Brawl and Sands of Mu sound effects, but I'll get used to them.

I really hated the "just like the other hero MMOs" open instances. Ugh, blech, yuck. As someone described above, waiting around for respawns with other people waiting around for respawns... well, I guess, welcome to every other MMO out there. Newbies should feel right at home.

I really liked the new lowbie arcs, even though I felt there were an overabundance of hunt missions. Flambeaux had me literally laughing out loud!

I'm also enjoying my new Time Manipulation/Beam Rifle and Thermal/Fire Blast defenders.

First Ward is really amazing. I mean, really. And more day jobs? Curse you, Paragon, for locking down my badger yet again!

But one thing REALLY annoys me. I've unlocked a lot of costume options from the iTrials and Ouroboros iMerit vendors. However, I can't access them when I create a new character. Not until I actually enter the game and then claim them from in-game email. After which, I can make a trip to any now-plentiful tailor to update the character. A rather nerdrage-y wrinkle in the current process.

But, all in all, I21 is a big hit. Can't wait to see what happens when they open the floodgates to the outside world.
