So the DO just want people to go ahead and pirate their show.

Cos folks won't be willing to wait the 30 days.

  3. Other things one might not know about Marston:

He helped invent the lie detector (polygraph).

Despite his bondage fetish, he was a staunch supporter of the feminist movement.

Eh, I really don't see that much connection to JLA/Avengers.

At least nothing that screams, "This is a parody of X character!". At least not more than a superficial level.

And the idea of a officially sponsored super-team is hardly unique to JLA/Avengers.

However, games like 7th Sea, Houses of the Blooded, Amber Diceless, they provide help so that even without a single person capable of roleplaying, somebody new to the hobby could learn how to become their character.
    Not really.

Because that's not how people get into gaming.

You don't have a group of folks spontaneously deciding to play RPGs. You have individuals and groups joining OTHER groups that already play RPGs.

As such you have folks that can teach. Better than any words on a page can do so.

Here's the disconnect, I think. I place more faith in people than in printed words.

In my groups, I don't care what system the group wants to play, I'm sure we'll have a good time. But because of the people, not merely because of the rules.

If you have good people, you're going to have a good game, regardless of the rules. Even if they're novices, as long as they're willing to learn, it'll work out.

Conversely if you have a table that sits there like lumps and only animate when it's time to roll dice, well, you're not going to see much roleplay no matter what game you are running.

  7. I'd consider a "superior first RPG" one with easy to understand basic rules that can be picked up and understood in 15-20 minutes, more than any "roleplay mechanics".

For a first timer, you'd want the lessons on how to roleplay to come from people, not some rules. The GM and other players.

  8. Nothing except the reams and reams of setting information they publish.

I mean, seriously, look at for example any prestige class published in D&D 3rd edition and half to 3/4s of the text is background and setting information on how to play that class. They had entire sourcebooks with no crunch rules at all, that had as their entire purpose to present setting and background.

They did not have any mechanical rules for roleplaying, sure, but they didn't publish all that background stuff for no reason.

It's a difference in design philosophy. D&D puts out all the fodder for roleplay in the background, and lets the player decide how to use it.

  11. I think nytflyr was getting confused on which light was meant, as there are 5 or 6 "fluorescent" style ceiling lights.

The ones used for stairs are the long narrow ones named "Fluorescent Light" and "Large Fluorescent Light", plus their "off" variants.

Ah, yes indeed. The old Stormwind Fallacy.

  15. You did note the "those who can, teach" bit of my earlier post, yes?

I take a very active role in promoting gaming in my area. Running games, hell, running conventions, coordinating groups, etc. Was even the rules adjudicator for a national RPG "living" campaign for a couple of years. That slightly crazed guy dragging himself out of his hotel room at 6 in the morning to make sure the Sunday slots go off, after having run 30 some hours of games the previous three days at the convention? Yeah, that was me.

I just don't think "roleplaying" is something that needs a ton of book rules. And to judge a game by the presence or absence of such rules is silly.

  17. Then it falls on those who are, to teach.

Having them rely on rules to determine their character backgrounds and motivations, is crippling them with a crutch.

And no, I don't believe in training wheels for bikes, either.

  18. I know who John Wick is, and what he contributed to the RPG hobby.

That said, I still don't give two craps about his judgments on different types of roleplaying games. They're his opinion.

I also don't happen to necessarily place that much credence to the opinions of the folks on RPG.net any more than I do for any other gaming group. There are far, far more roleplayers NOT on that forum than participate there.

I will furthermore ask, why the hell would I need a special set of rules to create my character's backstory? To me it's a crutch, not an aid. It's also why I have never ever purchased any of those "character creation aid" books or guides that purport to help you round out your character. To me they make for lazy roleplaying.

Take away the books, the dice, the paper and pencils, and as long as I can communicate I'm still a roleplayer.

That a set of rules has sections to codify character backgrounds and other life experiences is not a metric of a good roleplaying game to me. It's that the rules are clear, provide a logical mechanical framework to resolve conflicts without getting in the way, and have an interesting setting attached.

    I can provide the rest.

Or as my cousin once said, "Shut up about the damn rules and PLAY, asscake."

  19. Really, really basic stuff if you could only have two items added to the editor:

    1. Floor items, like the Floor Tile except double sided. In the existing variety of textures (white, grey, wood, etc).

    2. Wall items, in a similar fashion.

These two alone would reduce item counts in many bases to literally 10% of their existing amounts.

Also would be lovely if the base allowed total height for each room was doubled, and if stuff could be placed in doorway sections, but those would require some coding changes.

    I reject that categorically.

How invested in your character you get has nothing at all to do with the game rules used.

Rules are merely a framework. If a player chooses not to flesh out that framework with history, connections, background, breath life into it, well, that's the player's fault, not the rules.

I play quite literally dozens of game systems. I have found this true for all of them.

Or you're pulling from a lot of sourcebooks at once, like, so many that you'd pretty much HAVE to be playing D&D for there to be that many books to begin with.
There's a difference between creating a character, and optimizing a character.

In almost all games you can in fact toss together a character in under an hour if you know the system.

In almost all games, however, you can spend WEEKS optimizing a character.

  22. I enjoyed it immensely.

You always get that much more out of a movie when it's clear the cast is having a ball with it.

    -np
  23. The most likely "small" changes would be stuff that does not require major coding changes.

Like turning off the stacking restrictions for Desks, or adding new items.

Heck, making it so room columns count as walls for sticking wall items to them would be nice - then put in a version of the floor tile that sticks to walls.
