very cool thread!
will be following with interest. -
I'm all for anything that gets people out of instances and into the open.

they want to make sure everyone sees it.
*shrug* -
Quote:Well, clearly they're going to sell them. You and a few people are making large assumptions as to the Tier-9 VIP being better for business...
As opposed to how much money they'd make for selling those costume sets.
It's a question of price point.
Too low and you alienate the people who dropped a bundle to make Tier 9 so they could pick it up with tokens along with players who enjoy the status of exclusive stuff.
It's important not to do that, for reasons having nothing to do with reaping a short term profit off a formerly 'exclusive' set.
Quote:I'm not convinced that more money comes from having these VIP rewards. Honestly (and hats off to Paragon Studios), with just a few calculations it seems more likely that the company would make more money by selling them directly in the store (to any and all buyers).
It's a carrot to chase and a reward for people who've spent a lot of money on the game either over the years, or in a lump more recently. -
Quote:yah, if they can find that balance where it's high enough to maintain the perception of 'specialness' but not so high the non-9'ers storm the castle with pitchforks it'll be job well done.
But I'd also agree that they should probably sell any former T9 VIP costume items at a higher price than standard costume sets, perhaps even double or triple. That keeps up an illusion of exclusivity, if nothing else.
Overall, I've been really impressed with the implementation of the marketplace- I expect they'll do a good job on this as well. -
Quote:We have a lot of folk around here who don't worry about this kind of thing and could care less about exclusivity, which is nice from a community standpoint.*shrug* It works just fine for me.
But again, that's just me. I am not the alpha and the omega of the CoH customer base.
But from a business standpoint, when you promote a reward system centered largely around that exclusivity you undermine it at your own peril.
Hopefully they get the price point right and can generate more income from the non-9s without agitating the 9's too much. -
Quote:Champions came first, the Hero system evolved out of it.My understanding was that Champions *was* the Hero system. My first brush with it, IIRC, was Champions 3rd Edition. At that point, the only other system I'd seen that was so horribly bogged down by its own mechanics was Loremaster.
I was at Pacific Origins with some pals the year it was released (1981) and picked up what must have been some of the first copies available from their booth- it was a staple-bound paperback, much less comprehensive than the 1st hardcover edition a few years later.
Quote:*In the (1989? version with the 1st printing's hardcover binding that fell apart the 2nd-3rd time you dropped it) = 4th Edition & they were the same system*
"Champions" was effectively just a setting for the Hero System, Fantasy Hero, Ninja Hero, Space-something, 3D (=Time Travel), Dark Champs =Vigilantes, Western Hero (/e shudder = I still have it, its was a waste of paper), I know there were a few more. I've got the more obscure ones =aka mostly useless (and some older 3rd Ed stuff) in a box.... somewhere??
Later on, you could get the 'plain vanilla' = "Hero System" with out the Champions or any particular "setting".
My pnp gaming group fell apart at some point so I haven't got any hands-on experience with more recent stuff like Mutants & Masterminds, but any older superhero pen and paper stuff I've played at least a couple of times- Superhero 2044, anyone? Champions was always my favorite- reminded me a bit of CoH, in that character creation often seemed at least as big a part of my enjoyment as actually playing or running a game. -
Quote:"you'll have EXCLUSIVE ACCESS for a while before everyone gets the stuff!" makes an uninspiring sales pitch.Meh. Tier 9 VIP players have exclusive access to these new costume sets at least 6 months (probably more like 9-12 months) before they make them available outside of the Paragon Rewards program.
Not interested in re-arguing this topic, so I'll just note costumes are the big draw for Tier 9 VIP and Paragon takes a risk by undermining that exclusivity. -
-
yah, that's an ish 23 feature.
And very welcome it is! -
there's no reason to ever be in want of super inspos.
step 1: place lowball bids on 10 stacks of some crummy one people don't usually want- oranges and rez's are good.
step 2: collect stacks the next day, combine into 'good' ones.
step 3: stick in base storage for a rainy day.
step 4: rinse & repeat until storage is full.
alternate step 3, pocket change edition: combine into purple defenses & sell for 200k+ each on the market to impatient people. -
-
and after a sizable sample (30-odd packs) I ended up with nearly 1,000 merits and 10 or so ATOs, along with all the other stuff.
-
and going forward, add people you enjoy teaming with to your 'friends' list.
After a while you'll have a pretty good list of fun players to check when you log in. -
this thread delivers the funny.
They seem intent on allowing some manner of alternative access, which unless it is fairly onerous in terms of $$$ or time or both will undermine the effectiveness of Tier 9 VIP rewards.
I'll be interesting to see how far they think they can go. -
Quote:Thanks!Menu>Options>Keymapping
Scroll to the bottom and choose a key to bind Screenshot (TGA) to. I use the Home key as it's near the PrtScn button.
Quote:Mind, TGA files come out *HUGE* (up to 10MB each!!) so hopefully you've got a lot of space or use it sparingly.
Pretty much the only time I take screens is to post costumes here or as informational backup for Market forum posts...also, GIGANTIC HARD DRIVE so I should be okay. -
also, quick question-
I'm not liking the quality of my screenshots, I think they're going straight to jpg?
I dimly recall some way to change the format, anyone have any hints? -
Quote:I'm intending to, at some point, level up a newbie villain to check out the changes redside & if they go quick enough check out the redside SSAs that way.SSAs are actually different for heroes and villains, following the same story, but from different perspectives. So, if you enjoyed the first hero SSA, you might want to try the villain version of it, if only for the giggles during the final mission.
I logged in the Goat to check them out a while back, but I didn't respec him with exemplaring in mind & was missing a bunch of stuff I'd rather not have been missing, so I shelved the idea for a bit.
Episode 1 hero side was great fun, a nice evening's diversion, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the red side equivalent is. -
I have a couple of brutes, and I like them quite a bit.
I think I like scrappers a tiny bit more- something in me prefers the stability of always doing quite a bit of damage over sometimes doing not much and sometimes doing a whole heaping wagonload. And I'm really digging the stalker buffs that happened while I was away- stalkers are really good now, no longer one trick ponies deserving only of pity spots on teams.
I log in a brute when I'm in a certain kind of mood, the same way I log in my mind/kin controller when I'm in a certain mood. There's a rhythm to playing them that's either annoying, or tremendous fun depending on how I'm feeling. -
as the bounty of Netflix streaming continues to grow, my rule of thumb has evolved from OMG I loved that show, MUST WATCH! to Let Sleeping Dogs Lie.
In general, but especially in the case of stuff from my childhood and adolescence. For every show that's still fun, there are ten that leave me shaking my head in disbelieving agony that I could ever like something so awful. -
Quote:Yes, learn from my mishaps! Here's a recent thread from another returning player: Returning Player Diary that contains a lot of tips.
Also, I third the above advice- starting a new character and checking out the new content is a great re-introduction to the game. I was also a bit overwhelmed logging in my 50's for anything but checking their market slots and fiddling with their costumes a bit. My new level 10 street justice/shield scrapper is more my speed just now. =P -
Quote:On the one hand, I see this thread ending... poorly.
On the other hand... one of the arcs he's raving about is mine, and getting reviews and whatnot is usually good. (As long as they're at least moderately intelligent - "u suk" as a review doesn't really tell me much on how to improve it.)
I'll check it out and send along a "U ROOL!" to help balance out the creative karma! -
okay, I've given in to my natural urges, said "the heck with it!" and abandoned all other dabbling to level SilverRage in earnest. You can't fight fate, I guess- he's just too much fun to play.
Running him through Atlas I took on Twinshot's arc again, and ran up against the problem facing content that's more story dependent than action/mechanics dependent- as much as I loved it the first time through, the second time around I'm just madly clicking my way through dialog trees to get at the fightin'. If I'd waited a few months it'd probably be fine, but right now it's too fresh in my mind, like a book I just finished reading.
It's a variation of Hollywood Blockbuster Syndrome- explosions and fighting are pretty universal, intimate dramatic stories are harder to pull off, besides being less translatable to different demographic groups.
Anyway, still a terrific arc, but not one you should play every other week.
Got him through it at pretty close to level 10 & headed to Kings to do a little street sweeping and finish off the level. Leveled & hit up Blue Steel for a photo op:
time to do a bit of marketeering then off to dreamland.
