City of Heroes and its wealth of shared creations represent a new kind of publication in a new age of media. As we head further into the Digital Age, people will occasionally HAVE to make a stand for the public value of knowledge held within server-based storage media, as well as our inherent right as humans to continued access to the wealth of knowledge, imagination, and experience we build in these shared environments.
This is a terrific point, and runs parallel to something I've been chewing over since the announcement.

Thanks for articulating it for me, I'll give you a shout out when I finally finish the post...

    Which post was that?

Because I can't seem to find myself calling you anything of the sort.

    Neil Gaiman

    Mercedes Lackey

Not only they are famous and wonderful authors, but also showed their support on twitter.

And Mercedes Lackey went even far... she sent a letter to NCSoft CEO offering herself to promote the game without asking payment for it.

    You 3 are... AWESOME!
    Indeed!

As is John C. Wright, CoH player and author of the exceptional Orphans of Chaos trilogy

But you know who isn't awesome?

My machine will be 4 years old this xmas and wasn't cutting edge when I bought it, and my 'new' video card is a PNY GeForce 8800 GTS 320 DDR 3 of similar vintage.

As CO launched in what, 2009? I'd expect my performance to be at least adequate, if not blistering.

I'm sure there's some stuff I can do to improve the situation, but my motivation is low as long as Paragon City still stands. I'll mess around with it in December.

I have a guildmate who has every profession on alts and, with a more concerted effort, has 4 million gold. (For comparison of pricing, the most expensive vanity mount you can straight up buy in-game was around 50k; for about 600k, you could get a top guild to carry you through all of the content of a tier and give you all the gear and the vanity mount off the last boss, etc.)

WoW's market fluctuates a lot more though - the people I know who made the most made it by buying up raw materials when they were cheap, and then usually did a ton of crafting and selling right as patches hit and demand spiked. (Because the major wow patches introduce new gear, and the gear replacement spikes demand for the consumables like enchants and gems through the roof.)

That's the only one I can comment on.
I liked WoW's market enough to stay subbed there for several months after I'd stopped playing the game proper. It's very different from Wentworths, but has equally engaging potential for eeebil schemes.

this is FAR from my experience.

my machine isn't state of the art, but it ran CoH fairly well and with a recent video card upgrade ran it *really* well and was able to make use of quite a few Ultra features, unless I was doing something like x8 farming.

Running at 'recommended' graphics in CO resulted in very noticeable, distracting lag in the tutorial. But things looked pretty, so I let it ride- I'm used to trading a bit of lag for a prettier world.

Once I exited the tutorial though, UUUUUGH!
Total slideshow in Millennium City. Even backing off the graphics and using all my usual performance tricks it isn't a smooth ride, and now the game is vastly uglier.

When the time comes I'll poke around and see what I can do to improve things, but on my machine at least your statement comes across as delusional.
  9. just amazing stuff Doc Leo- thank you so much for doing this.

That doesn't speak well for whoever's in charge of the game.

Neither does my experience on their forums this AM, where the entire first page of general discussion was taken up by spammer links for college football streams...which were still up when I arrived at work. Several of their regulars were bumping useful threads to keep them from drowning in spam.

    Wow!

Cape Radio reporting Freedom is full too- sounds like Infinity is next on the overflow list.
  12. Nethergoat

    Wow!

Freedom is the designated overflow server.

    Wow!

Virtue is full, 150 players in queue.

    Freedom up next!

...not only that, but didn't someone just show how CoH was only 2% of NCSoft's income for the last several quarters? Do what you have to do - only realize it will never affect them in any noticeable way.

  15. nosed around a bit as I've found it emotionally difficult to log in any of my real characters the past few days.

last time I played, was able to make a cosmetically quite passable version of the Goat. this time I couldn't- turns out you have to get to level 10 to unlock the bulk of the character creator.

    Dumb.

Did the tutorial, which aside from my issues with the art style and the combat was engaging enough. Been running around Millennium City & got the not-Goat to level 8, which has been enough gameplay to remind me of what I didn't like about it the first time around.

As Sam notes, all the outdoor stuff makes the game feel a LOT like WoW in tights. While I always advocated more zone-related activities here, they went too far the other direction. I don't like it when *everything* is an instance, but neither should they be used only for special occasions.

The weird aggro, insta-regen of spawns and relative weakness of your character are also very WoW-like. Combat is an weird mix of annoying mechanics (block? feh) with tedium (basically 'pew pew pew pew' with your 'combo builder', then BOOM with a real attack).

Also, gear. Finished a mission and the contact gave me my choice of BRACERS providing various stat boosts.

    WoW....really? =P

Better than DCUO, which I found unplayable, but really derivative and without any particular strengths of its own that I've been able to discern. Yeah I have a sweet tooth for superheroes, but the gameplay is giving me bad flashbacks to my Arms DPS Orc warrior.

  18. GJ, Organica.

I've been neglecting my own blog the past few days because I still can't think about this situation without getting depressed.

I think I need to just schedule a day sometime when ALL I do is catalog my characters and take screens.

I have trouble deleting level 5 alts I haven't played in six years, so this is a non-starter for me. =P
  20. Okay gang, we need to get together for a group shot in our base at some point and we need to figure out a time to make our final offerings to the INFcinerator.

I'll have to see if it can keep my attention better than it did at launch and for some time after that.
My initial foray (Steam tells me I spent 7 hours there) left me flat- very WoW like quest structure, and the only reason I ever played WoW was to chat with my friends who played WoW on teamspeak. On top of which I wasn't a fan of the graphic style or the combat, which seemed aimed at console gamers.

But that was quite a while ago.
I'm sure I'll check it out again, if for no other reason than I find DCUO abhorrently unplayable and there'll be no other outlet for my superheroic urges.

    Maybe it'll be better...
