    So I made an Elec/Dark Dom without Gremlins and I got kicked off a team because the team leader was like Y U NO PETS! /kick

    You don't have a lot of Acc in your attacks and that might end up working against all your efforts to conserve end. That and the fact that you don't have much end redux slotted in your attacks may lead to longer fights and ultimately more end consumption.

    Are you planning on running CoF all the time? If so your net end recovery isn't all that better than mine. Your build nets about 1.9 end/sec with it on. My build nets around 1.4 but you have to keep in mind that I don't HAVE to run acro (have 4pt kb protection in the BOTZ proc) or tactics. So with those off I'm actually pretty close to your build at 1.8 end/sec.

    With the exception of the theft of essence proc (and you really should get one), the healing procs should go in health, not in dark regen, you will need Acc in dark regen especially when you are facing small spawns or an AV. While on the topic of healing, take the extra slots out of health, you have dark regen.

    You have to focus on what you want from your set bonuses. For example, the 4th slot in opp gloom and the 5th slot in tough are completely unnecessary. The measly gains in mez resistance and stun duration has no practical benefit for your tank. The extra slot in soul transfer can be better used elsewhere. These slots can go to obsidian armor and dark embrace to shore up your s/l and psi resists. One slot in obsidian will do magnitudes more than the 3% resist the impervium proc gives you.

    Above all else I've said in this post I'd strongly recommend better Acc in your powers. You may want to consider the vigor alpha instead of cardiac.

    In favor of a ranged playstyle I did not include arctic air in this build. This is also a final respec build but if I were leveling I'd pick up shiver during the early teens and move picking up kick/tough/weave down the level progression.

    The build is 2.5 % shy of the S/L/Ranged softcap but flash arrow closes that gap nicely.

    The build is also 6 seconds shy of perma-hasten.

    The final respec build will have all set bonuses exemp down to level 28 for moonfire. That means almost perma hasten and almost softcapped ranged defense.

    For Incarnate slots one can opt for Agility to close the softcap gap without flash arrow and gain even more recharge, Reactive for the fire proc to set off OSA, and Rebirth for regen on top of the defenses.

    Overall this build is suitable for not just solo/small team play, it can be played very aggressively and do very well on big teams as well even for mid level content.

    IO tricks: posi proc in frostbite and acid for a chance to set off OSA? Proc in poison gas and flash arrow to turn them into AoE damage powers? KD proc in kick for extra SPARTA?

    This is what I came up with if you want more recharge. The catalyzed version of the brute ATO gives 5% s/l defense so that'll put you over 32.5%. I used more purple set and hamis and cut down on the number of slots you used for your defensive toggles.

    I'd put the ATO in a fast recharging ST attack if you wish to use the proc. I was thinking rib cracker since you'll want to spam it as much as possible for the -res. The hold purple set is a place holder for the ATO just for the recharge bonus.

    TW, the melee defense you get from sweep gives you a leg up on making DA godly with IOs.

    It's an end hog though, but the rewards are well worth it.

  9. The second build is a case study on sacrificing too much of a blaster's potential in pursuit of pure range.

    People have been successful with pure ranged builds but the electric primary is really ill suited for that purpose. Having only 2 single target attacks that you can cycle reliably and one ranged AoE on a medium timer in your primary leaves gaps in your attack chain and your damage will feel anemic compared to other blaster primaries with more ranged offerings. It's not until level 44 that you get a second ranged aoe that's on a long timer. This repertoire of attacks is not enough for my tastes.

    I'm sure the build can solo on the default difficulty given the defense but there is potential for so much more.

    I've come to a few conclusions about how to play blasters that work well for me: 1 - stay mobile, 2 - don't get mezzed, 3 - use inspirations.

    On #1 I always take combat jumping, combined with hurdle it gives me precise combat movement and allows me to move in and out of danger zones and minimizing my exposure to such danger zones. Plus it makes you practically immune to immobolization effects.

    On #2 I always build for ranged defense, it will not stop all mezzes but it does a better job of avoiding them than typed defense. Mezzes are a blaster's biggest problem despite defiance. Combine this with #1 and you can dictate how an enemy is to attack you, and use that to your advantage.

    On #3 Use them if you got them. Insp combine during downtime and pop inspies as needed.

  10. If I had to choose between 32.5% ranged def vs 45% s/l I'd still go ranged. Mezzing will happen regardless whether I softcap ranged or not but having ranged def reduces the chances of that happening far more than softcapping s/l ever will.

    As for the comment about getting mezzed 20ft away, I find that if I get mezzed point blank everyone takes swipes at me because they are close and the melee AI kicks in, not to mention splash damage from PbAoEs like DE greater devoured footstomps. However, if I get mezzed at range only a few out of that group would actually run towards me and engage in melee. I'd rather have the latter, it gives me time to actually use defiance to immob the dangerous ones approaching me and kill the weak ones. Meanwhile since most of my ranged defense come from set bonuses a significant portion of it is still working against those taking shots at me from afar.

    Also, if I'm in trouble, I can simply hop away and let my ranged defense work for me while I pop inspies, you can't reliably pull that off with S/L def.

    Soloing +4/+8 is extreme and takes a completely different playstyle and strategy, sometimes even build. I don't really use that as a benchmark for the benefits of ranged defense for general performance. I do, however, solo my fire/elec on +8, just not +4/+8.

    Softcapped S/L/Ranged, perma-hasten with T4 spiritual and 1 siphon speed. You keep your ranged softcap down to level 28 for mid level content and it's slightly less expensive then the build you posted.
  12. I disagree with the whole "if you got pbaoe attacks/melee attacks go with s/l defense" statement that I constantly see on the blaster boards. I believe the biggest bane to blasters is mezzes, and quite a few mezzes ignore s/l defense. If you stand in the middle of a mob and get mezzed, the main source of your s/l defense gets suppressed and it's game over.

    Council/rikti/carnies/malta and a lot of other high level faction have mobs with ranged mezzes that don't have an S/L component and I found myself stopped cold exactly where I DON'T want to be when I was running my S/L softcapped build back when I first started IOing my blaster. It's even more glorious when you are up against a faction with a lot of AoE attacks and you are standing right next to the tank/scrapper/whatever everything is shooting at when you do get mezzed. It goes something like this: "let me hit build up and jump in, crap i'm held, bam bam bam aww I am dead, hey at least i got 2 shots off from defiance before I died, never mind I didn't kill anything..."

    I am not advocating building pure ranged blasters by any means. Learn how to be mobile and lessen your exposure time in melee range. Mob AI is dumb and it takes a second for them to switch from ranged to melee mode, and you never have to be in melee for THAT long to get even those long animating attacks off if you learn how to move. My fire/elec dances all over the place jousting melee attacks, powersink and inferno, same with my sonic/mm with DP and PSW. I'm also not saying that you will avoid all mezzes with ranged def but based on my personal experience and playstyle Ranged def > S/L all the way.
  13. Fire/Kin can do more than just farm. Build one that can rock regular/incarnate content and it'll be able to farm too.

    I don't have a problem with giving out builds. If you copy it great, you'll benefit from it more if you learn from the build and apply elements you like from my build to your own builds. That said, this is my build, with softcapped S/L and ranged defense and perma-hasten with T4 spiritual and 1 siphon speed. Yeah, it can farm too.

  15. If you want to make full use of arctic air then you have to stand pretty close to the action. Unfortunately one stray mez will ruin your day and then it's game over.

    You could build a ranged Ice/Storm troller but Ice/ is pretty lackluster without AA.

    I wanted to use AA on my ice/storm so I had to take some measures to ensure I don't get mezzed too much. So I built her for ranged defense. On top of that I took rock armor from the Stone Master APP and ended up with softcapped S/L defense as well. Combined they cover a good number of attacks. Thirdly, since Ice is a low damage primary, I wanted to remedy that weakness by utilizing damage procs in the powers I spam the most.

    This is the build I ended up with and I'm very happy with it. I could use more recharge in the build but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to live with as a trade-off for her sturdiness.

    This is a finished product. The build and playstyle I took to get to this point is drastically different. For example, I was attached to ice slick at the hip and played at range a lot more while leveling up (and before IOs were introduced to the game) but now I barely even use it. With this build i jump into the mob while laying down freezing rain and just spam frostbite over and over, and sprinkle in tornado, lightning storm, and fissure whenever they are up.

    The most important thing about ice/storm is learning how to use all the tools at your disposal. That's another thread in itself.
  16. Spring attack and dark pit are both nice tools for you to mitigate the return alpha, but unnecessary. At the very least get stealth + stealth proc, or SS + stealth proc so you can approach the enemy undetected. Then it's just a matter of jousting your PBAOEs.

    Practice this on lowbie mobs that can't hurt you, in perez for example. Stand in the middle of the mob, then take a hop back (combat jumping really helps here, SS adds to the momentum), immediately as or after you take that hop, fire off soul drain (keep holding the back and jump button/keys). By the time the animation finishes you will already be 20-30 ft away from the mob ready to let loose your aoes. Once you get comfortable with that try superspeeding or hopping into the mob and then the above to practice your approach. You should never be in melee range for more than a fraction of a second this way, even if inferno or soul drain takes 3 seconds to animate. The same principle applies to melee attacks like smite or shadow maul or MG.

    You can also alter your jump direction mid air FYI (CJ is required here). One thing I do with my melee types is hop out of a pack of mobs just far enough to use energy torrent, and at that point change directions back into the mob as I fire off energy torrent.

    If you can master all the above you will have no need for dark pit or spring attack with a ranged def build, and I can promise that you will see the game in a new light.
  17. When I first started IOing I went S/L and quickly found out that mezzes will get me 90% of the time, and when the S/L defense shield drops it's over. Defiance does squat when a full pack of angry mobs is aggroed on you and you are unable to move.

    I prefer softcapping ranged because it does a better job of keeping mezzes away and it works against all damage types as long as you keep your distance. Plus you derive a greater percentage of that defense from set bonuses so even if you get mezzed, and when the shields drop you still retain a significant amount of ranged defense.

    The downside to going this route is that you will sacrifice quite a bit of recharge to attain that goal and you will have to take a lot of melee attacks in your secondary for the set bonuses even if you prefer the pure ranged style. I am a blaster at heart so I have no problems with the latter, all my blasters take melee/pbaoes from their secondaries. Getting in a mob's face is not an issue, hop in, fire the power while hopping out ensures minimal exposure to melee.
  18. Are you planning to have set bonuses exemp down as well? Because other than purples none of your recharge/defensive bonuses are going to exemp. Mind link isn't perma without hasten which means you will experience further downtime on ML when running mid-level content.

    I tossed together an exemp build with softcap to all positions with perma ML and perma-hasten + aid self by level 30. Mask Presence is not necessary for softcap so you can swap that and lunge if you wanted more melee attacks, as you will have full invis anyway with SS and stealth proc.

    EJI - I've been dealing with the end issue with temp powers and insp combine for 49 levels and my goal with this tank is not to be an energizer bunny so I'm comfortable with the end consumption and recovery ratio with the build. Besides, once my build is complete I will be softcapped for mid level content so I won't have to run acro/tough and even maneuvers (I'll still be in the 40% range with it turned off) when exemped down.

    LSK - What makes my build any different than a shield/SR/nin build with soft capped positional to range/aoe and softcapped melee with one def sweep? DA starts out with no affinity to either typed or positional defense so I don't see why I would need to build for type def as conventional wisdom dictates. As for the leadership pool, I don't necessarily need to use tactics and I could just as well replace it with build momentum. See above on my end conservation tactics when I exemp once my build is complete.
  21. I'm not a big fan of S/L alone on any squishy without mez protection. S/L is good against attacks that do damage but the bane of any squishy is mezzes and ranged defense covers that better than S/L defense.

    Were I to choose one I'd go with ranged defense even on a fire/kin because being in melee range is an option, not a necessity. You can always force enemies to use ranged attacks on you and the controls offset the need for S/L defense when you are in the thick of it. Pure farm builds that cherry pick their mobs will get by just fine with just S/L defense though.

    LSK - I was thinking of slows when building for fire/cold def, but most those attacks would have some s/l component so I made adjustments and came up with another build that focuses on S/L/E/N. S/L falls a wee bit shy but I'm ok with that. I was going to post the build but upon seeing EJI's post and build....

    EJI - I like your build, a lot. My positional defenses are already in the mid-30s in my initial build and I did not even think to explore that option. I tinkered around with the build you have and this is what I came up with:

    I decided to keep Acro to save slots otherwise used for -kb procs, and left taunt slotted for 5% global recharge instead of 7.5%. The reason I kept most of my enhancements at level 31 is so that I can enjoy the benefits of those set bonuses at level 28 because I like doing mid level content.

    Thanks for going over the build.

    I am finding it hard to softcap to all damage types save psi without the glad proc with the power choices and powerset combo I picked. The proc is not necessary of course, 40%ish defense to most damage types affords me plenty of survivability so I could swap that slot out and replace it with something more useful, like another +recharge proc in titan sweep or a +end proc in phy perf or another -kb proc. Just out of curiosity, how are you managing to softcap with your build?

    I picked vigor because 1) I don't like the acc on my attacks due to the low acc enhancment value from KC and 2) The end discount doesn't require any explanation. The destiny slot is arbitrary, barrior, ageless and rebirth are all useful in their own ways.

    I took acro because I really hated getting knocked around but even with it certain foes will still kb me. 4 points probably will suffice for most game content but how much should I shoot for if I wanted to main tank some of the games more challenging content? 12? 16? or 20?

    I took acro after level 30 because you'll notice that I have all my def bonuses around level 28-29 and most content around that level range and below won't have enough kb to over come 4 pts of kb protection from my steadfast proc. I'm not a big fan of OG but if I dump acro I can certainly fit OG in, or hover to get around the KB issue. If I get hover then I won't be able to use arc of destruction while hovering, but I can accept that because it will be situational and hover gives me another positioning tool, more defense, and another mule for LOTG.

    I'm very happy with my current build. I was surprised that I could soft-cap both ranged and S/L without sacrificing any of my core powers. Hasten is perma with t4 spiritual and siphon speed. End usage is a bit high but that's what transference and blues are for. Mezzes are not too big a concern with my defense but t4 clarion is there as backup.
