    It could be worse... When they closed the Korean servers, they just gave them all US accounts; no character transfers at all.

  2. Everyone that's been watching the game for a while has pretty much agreed that something hueg is on the horizon, and I don't mean the architect. Something so big that it has consumed most of the dev team for almost a year and a half. Building on an existing MMO, that's a massive span of time.

  6. I completely agree. Ever since the NC acquisition, new stuff has been thin on the ground, and holiday events aren't that interesting. Apart from the Zombie Invasion, which was awesome, but it ain't exactly like that took a lot of work.

    It all reinforces my opinion that something hueg is coming after I14.
  7. CoH is no longer a TWIMTBP game. They're in bed with ATi now, despite how bad it runs on ATi hardware.

    The game is indeed old, but the problem is that Radeons have never been very good at OpenGL games, which CoH is. Catalysts are also completely horrible. While I could accept CoH as an exception, every driver from 8.8 onwards has been a train wreck on any PC that isn't as standard as it can be. Some inter-driver hotfixes help, but the monthly schedule means drivers are always pushed out before they're ready and tested. This cannot continue if ATi wants their drivers to improve.

    Your CPU is a quad-core, and CoH can only use two cores. That's why it never goes above 50%. It lets you multitask very well, though.

    I read that disabling Catalyst A.I. will also disable your CrossFire. It's worth trying that.

    I tried looking through the ATi forums, but it's full of so many raving fanboys, I couldn't stomach it...
  8. It ain't lag, it's packet loss. Somewhere between your PC and the CoH servers, data is being dropped. For some reason, at least SOME packet loss always goes hand in hand with lag on CoH, which technically shouldn't happen.

    Causes for packet loss can be anything. Your router may not be able to multitask very well, like if it's a Speedtouch. Your ISP may be getting full up. The CoH servers may be getting hammered, causing it to drop old packets.

    It's alright for some packets to be dropped, 'cause usually the game has gone on since your PC tried to send that packet. But the stuff related to the /sync bug should NEVER drop, it should be resent if it breaks. Yet it doesn't.

    Loads of things cause packet loss, but CoH is also at fault for not handling it very well. Leastwise, that's how I see it.
  9. Do what OV Ohms said. I wouldn't use any utility that promises to subvert UAC.

    The main problem is that Vista looks at the word "updater" in the name and immediately slaps it with a UAC prompt. The idea is that anything named Updater is going to want to regularly write files to a secured directory, and not all updater programs can ask for UAC permission on their own. So, Vista grants it admin access to be on the safe side, and that means UAC.

    Do OV_ohms's shortcut and you run CoH directly. This means CoH runs with regular permissions (not admin), which is safer and more stable. The idea is that if a non-admin program crashes, it won't take admin stuff with it.
  10. Yeah, ED was controversial. But it makes much more sense with IOs.

    You should know that smoke grenade got nerfed, it doesn't floor the accuracy of enemies any more.

    I can try to describe IOs in this way... Instead of taking Targeting Drone and six-slotting attacks for damage, you would slot your attacks to max out damage and boost the other attributes at your whim. IOs allow you to get more out of each slot. For example, the right combination will allow you to cap DMG, ACC, and moteradely boost end, recharge, and range even. The crucial thing to remember is that this does not conflict with ED.

    What they've done is remove the easy option, and instead added in many more choices. In some ways, a character with tripped-out IOs can be more powerful than anything pre-IOs or pre-ED ever could be.

    Your best bet is to read every Inventions guide over on the US forums, then do the Inventions tutorial in the Steel Canyon university. Make a few IOs and see how they work. Get Mids Hero Designer and play around in it. A hands-on approach can be much more informative than a wall of text.

    Villains wasn't affected by the bug, I only got it intermittently on Heroes. Now Heroes is just broken.

    Well, my understanding is that there's nowt new for Valentines day, so a closed beta either this week coming or next week is not impossible. I was anticipating it days ago, myself, so the 10th is looking good. After all, they want I15 to be at least in closed beta fer late April.

  16. I expect an announcement of something on the 3rd. I13 is a distant memory, we've had the winter event, the devs have had christmas, double XP was last week. Not much stands in the way of at least an update on their progress, or a filling in of I14 features.

  19. Just FYI, you do know that the cast times got chopped down, right? In some cases they're under half what they were. In general, the preamble from most attacks has been removed. It makes redraw much more bearable, and lets you lob out attacks much faster. This also means you're Rooted less often. It feels like the same changes performed on Scrapper weapon sets, only the cast times and animations have been shortened even more.

    Take a look at the Live numbers and compare them with Mids' to see what's new.

    The only question you need to ask is if you think a 20 second recharge on Ignite is worth it.

  21. Making the face texture animate is easy. Add support for a GIF-like file format and there you go. But what do you animate it to? How do you control the texture? How do you lip-synch it? That's an awful lot of work. Also, for every lip movement there is a discrete texture for every face in the game. If animated faces are ever to be added, this is not the way.

    It's more likely that, should I15 turn out to be the revamp, that all face options would be re-created in higher resolution to fit a higher polygon face. In my opinion the faces are the oldest and worst part of characters today, and they shouldn't be left out from a revamp. With that on the table, this new high-poly face would have a proper mouth. Perhaps animating this from the get go would be expecting too much, but it would open the door to it.
