City of Heroes/Villains Expansion ?
Was this not from when Jack was still answering and speculating on the future of CoX and teasing his 'City of pulp spies' MMO take on the franchise?.
CO was going to be CoX2 before it became MUO.
I really should do something about this signature.
It is part of the same press release that says NCSoft aquired CoH/V IP so Jack wasn't involved at this point. AFAIK MUO was first, but it got canned and then Jack turned it into CO.
If that ^ is true then does this still point to an official statement regarding a yet unseen expansion/sequel?
IIRC we were told that NC bought the CoX IP on 6/11/2007 (it's my birthday which is why I remmember, I'm not usually so retentive of dates).
So the press release mentioned by the OP was either the buying press release or a quick follow up. Either way Jack had gone as had the MUO/CO work.
Pretty sure that signs and portents for a sequel have come occasionally - but I don't think NC ever got around to announcing formal plans for the City of Heroes IP in any way, shape or form.
Still, nowt like a notable birthday to get all tipsy and start saying things you may later regret (when the players hold you to them)

I recall seeing Matt Miller saying not so long ago (Massively interview maybe?) that CoX had a solid future ahead of it and they were making plans for the next 5 years. To me that means that there won't be a CoX2 per se, but there'll be lots up upgrades along the way

There will be SOME form of expansion/box presence at some point later this year, possible around the time of the 5th anniversary.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Everyone that's been watching the game for a while has pretty much agreed that something hueg is on the horizon, and I don't mean the architect. Something so big that it has consumed most of the dev team for almost a year and a half. Building on an existing MMO, that's a massive span of time.
Necrobond - 50 BS/Inv Scrapper made in I1
Rickar - 50 Bots/FF Mastermind
Anti-Muon - 42 Warshade
Ivory Sicarius - 45 Crab Spider
Aber ja, natrlich Hans nass ist, er steht unter einem Wasserfall.

So - like I said - NC never got around to announcing formal plans for the City of Heroes IP.
All that they did do was announce (in interview) that they were making plans. They've never officially announced, neither formally nor informally, what those plans are.
And what most people would call CoX2 may well be part of the plans.
There again, it may not be.
Or maybe they'll just keep tweaking the engine and adding bits so that CoX1 becomes barely recognisable if you'd been in stasis for 3 years but it's still officially CoX1 as it grew organically into a form that would have been called CoX2 if it had been developed and delivered all at once.

Going rogue and robes would be good, at the same time would be better. I was real robes!

Actually I think that this may be a misunderstanding and one of the new recruits is called Hugh G.
Apparently he's consumed most of the dev team (with a massive amount of thyme) in a year and a half and NC have been forced to start discriminating against cannibals in their employment drives.

CoX 2 would be competing with CoX, so I do not think that would make sense, especially in the current business climate. And releasing one after the other superhero MMOs had already hit the street would be kind of counter productive as well.
A vast graphical update to the current client would no doubt make at least some players unable to run the game with their current hardware.
I think that it would be far more likely for them to release a new client to the same game. With all the same costume parts and so on, where everything just had higher polygon counts, higher resolution textures, and had applied physics to it as well. A bit like applying the capes style movements to things like lab cotes, robes, skirts, sleeves, loose peaces of cloth (say folded or tied cloth belt) and of cause hair. The same client might also allow players to change the color of powers and the appearance of pets. And the old client could just ignore the added data seeing the powers as normal.
UO added a second client with the release of AoS, giving player the option between the old 2d sprits version and a new 3d version.
Then a few years down the line, when the vast majority had switched to the new client and the hardware to be able to run the old one had become completely obsolete, NC Soft could then discontinuity support for the old client.

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Not sure "alternate client" idea would work for CoX... UO was based arouind tiles with some simplistic physics, - something easily translated into 3D and back. CoX was true 3D from the get-go, so, since collision detection is server-side, and should be different for different clients if we update zones along with models... twice as much work, four times as much bugs for dubious (business-wise) benifit of supporting really old hardware...
If we don't update zones, then new client isn't needed at all, - you can add it as option to the current one, as was done once already.
Okay I was searching google for City of Heroes 2, because I had heard rumours of a potential Graphics update or a sequel or something, when I stumbled across an official NCSoft press release from 11 November 2007. A While ago. At that time CoV was already released (as it is mentioned by name in this release) and so when I read the following I wondered if this is confirmation for these rumours from 2 years ago?

NCsoft will soon be announcing formal plans for the City of Heroes IP, which will include expansions and sequels to the popular comic-book inspired massively multiplayer online (MMO) game.
