Quote:Your experience is certainly limited in that case, and I'd appreciate not having that overly wide brush come out. I've met some outstanding players via PVP who are perfectly reasonable people. Some jerks, yes - but I can find jerks (sometimes just as loud) among the RP community, marketeers, "PVE-only" community - pretty much any one you care to come up with.But... do we want them back? Speaking from my own experience (albeit limited) I have never met a player in a PvP zone who was worth appreciating as a player, they have all been jerks. And most of the folks who I know of who PvP are making the obnoxious farm missions in AE and being jerks when they do anything else.

I wouldn't call that a late blooming build - I'd wonder what yours looks like now.
I took my Plant/Thorn into Sharkshead at about your level - I was even or -1 to Scrapyard's mobs. I soloed his mobs - got all the scrapyarder badges in one sitting. Ended up with something like 300-400 kills to 2-3 deaths (leveled in the process, too.) Now, yes, I had a couple small purples and greens, but for the most part - it was seeds, root, AOE, AOE. Didn't even have Creepers at the time, and I certainly wasn't IO'd out.
Post how you are now. -
Quote:As an aside, my last Asus board had a little feature I really, really, REALLY wish all mainboards copied - a "Quick connect" block. It's really just a jumper extender, labeled, that you plug your header cables into, then plug the whole block into the mainboard. I *loved* that. (This was on my M2N32-SLI Deluxe.)Originally Posted by FatherXmasNext step is probably the most annoying, connecting up the case switches, each connector is marked and it's placement in the header block is found in the motherboard manual. Once all connected I usually gather and masking tape those cables down so I don't accidentally snag them while cabling in the front panel connectors, power, etc.
My current build's ASUS board, sadly, didn't come with one of those.
I really wish those were standard. -
Quote:I should have been more clear - I was talking more along the lines of the population, not hero vs villain.Actually, if any MMO would be expected to have PvP, it's a superhero one - comicbooks are almost totally based on personal confrontations between superheroes and supervillains - in fact, with the huge rogues gallery some heroes have, there are probably more named and personalized villains than heroes.
Compare it to something like LotR, or other standard fantasy settings - the number of named, personalized evil people is way, way smaller than the number of heroes - the good side is usually outnumbered, so the focus is more on them than the hordes enemies - but superheroes are heavily invovled in personal duels all the time. -
OK, where to start.
First, philosophically... PVP just doesn't *go* in this game. Yes, there are some people who enjoy it - I'm one of them - but even at its peak, it had only a tiny portion of the population actively involved. Yes, there were some decent sized SGs (Lions Den comes to mind,) but even so, not long after the release of the zones, it was rare to see much activity. COH/COV just hasn't been a big PVPing stomping ground.
Related to that - if I want PVP action, I know I can go to one of five places to find it (the four zones and the arena.) Think of it this way - you're asked to find three people. In the first try, you're given a two story house to find them in. Think you can find them pretty quickly? OK. Next, you're told to do so in a skyscraper. How are your chances now? Our city zones (using the term for both games) are pretty big - even if someone's called out ("Hey, Villaindude is in IP, someone want to get him?") how long will it take you to find them?
Now, let's tie the first two points here together - and your OP doesn't mention flagging/unflagging. You have a population that mostly doesn't care for PVP. They un-flag it (which I would assume would be the default.) The would-be invader can't do much of anything (no attacking NPCs for the most part, etc, etc, etc.) Finding someone INTERESTED in PVP takes even longer (who then has to be in the proper level range) ... why would this system work out? Answer: It wouldn't. It would frustrate the few people interested because they cant' find a fight, it'd irritate the ones who get conned into flagging for PVP when they don't really want to.
Also, you're ignoring one thing - the major mechanics difference between powers in PVE and PVP. I'm reasonably sure the mechanics are switched per-zone, not "per what you're fighting." I know my Tanks can get mezzed while they're in the PVP zone if there's a mezzing NPC around, for instance - don't forget, all mez protection does in a PVP zone is cut duration. And many of these mechanics have proved so popular with PVPers that the devs added options to turn them off in the arena....
Between how the game works, the low PVP-willing population (PVP just wasn't a big draw before, and I don't see a population spike coming in with this added - though I do know of several who would just quit outright,) and all the restrictions you've added in what I'd assume is an attempt to make it "fair," well... I just don't see it working. -
Quote:Your biggest shortfall if not taking White Dwarf isn't in tanking (though it's nice to be able to,) but in losing (a) a "click-mez protection" of sorts (you can shift to dwarf if mezzed) and (b) losing a second heal. I don't think any, or many, teams pick up a PB for a primary tank.I want to build a Pb. I am interested in what they have to offer. Basically I am a blaster/scrapper kind of guy. I am ok with defenders and controllers but I hate using tanks and as a result I am bad at being a tank.
1) If I dont pick up White Dwarf form am I selling myself short? Also will teams invite me and be disappointed when they realize that I don't tank?
You'll have a lot of options, and I think given what you said (you like being a scrapper/blaster) you'll be generally happy with picking a mix. Radiant and Incandescent Strike are pretty much "must takes" IMHO, even if you're triform. I generally hate saying "Take these, this, this" or giving builds when someone asks about Khelds, though.Quote:2) If I do just pick Nova what types of powers should I choose for human form? Also what role would I fill in human form?
I will say "don't discount quantum flight," it's a nice tool to have. Pool wise, I tend to like having stealth (just stealth, possibly with an IO if you can snag one) for alphas on such things as Voids or other problematic single targets.
Yes. From your description of what you like, you'd probably feel better with a Peacebringer than a Warshade (though I highly recommend both - a 'shade does mature a touch slower, but can be ungodly when grown... but you'll really want Dwarf for that second mire, too.)Quote:3) Should I even roll a Peacebringer if I don't want to tank?
I think they cover most, quite honestly. Then again, I haven't been over most of the guides in a while (having run my first when... well, there weren't any, and while the game was changing massively.)Quote:4) Please share any tips and tricks that you think weren't covered in the guides for Peacebringers especially dual form Peacebringers. -
Quote:Seconding this. Still have to get those last few levels on my Mind/Fire, but it took off early and just kept going - it's a great set.Recently I got my Mind/Fire to 50 and had a great time doing it. I recommend it.
I like Ice, if I'm looking for control - but I will say this. If you've played an ice controller, you'll likely have to un-learn quite a bit. I think starting as an Ice troller (I've got a few, including a 50 ice/emp) made starting with Ice as a dom harder just because of that un-learning. (Of course, I could say the same about Earth, and many sets - others, like Fire, don't really have that issue IMHO.) -
Quote:A costume piece that drops very rarely sitting on the market for 14-40 million INF is worthless to me.Untrue. The devs went ahead and changed costume drops and essentially made them worthless. That change was based on player feedback.
A costume piece I can *use* on a character has far greater worth. Given the costume creator is one of the big selling points of this game (as opposed to the market, which ... yeah...) it made sense to make those more accessible.
(Note, this is not an argument supporting the OP. Just that I have quite a few issues with the quoted statement and sentiment.) -
Going to go with "Whatever's easier" and "It depends." Especially when you look at the mainboard and your cooler. I'll typically fit things like a CPU or RAM in while the mainboard is out of the case, just for ease of access. (Of course, some cases have a slide out mainboard tray - some even take the back plates with them - which makes most of this moot.)
Power supplies *tend* (again, case dependant) to be easier to put in afterward - just so you don't have a mess of cables to work around when putting the MB in. OTOH, it helps to at least fit it to work out routing, especially when you can hide some of the cables behind, etc. -
Quote:Striga and Khelds were both introduced in issue 3.What is the perceived problem with the announced "unlock at 20"?
It's a very elegant solution to perhaps how they could have been introduced in the first place (if the game had Striga Isle at the time), but they weren't. -
-
-
I *want* to say yes to the first. The second, not since issue 3 at the least. (IOW, I've never seen it - and I have done that falling. Especially with Defiance 1.0, jumping off the top of a skyscraper in Old Faultline into one of the cracks in the earth.)
-
My reaction would be censored to this. Both parts.
Let's just say the only uncensored part would be "no."
And the word is "Combined," not "Combanded." -
Quote:And some (not me) have felt that Kheldians (or VEATs - which IS true for me) aren't much of a "reward" for hitting 50.Whether you like Kheldians or not is irrelevant. They are still meant as a reward. So, complain that its a sucky reward if you want... but I like my kheldians, and I feel my hard work has just been slapped in the face.
Now they're unlocked at 20.
I got mine for hitting 50 in issue 3-4. With little content from 38-40, no debt reduction, debt *earlier,* a higher debt cap, no XP smoothing, no IOs, etc, etc, etc.
Dev definition: Tied to a story. As shown in having their *own* storyline, fixed origins, and other restrictions (Kheld: locked out of some power pools, VEAT: required costume.)Quote:And you all seem to be jumping me about the term "Epic". Yes, the story of the Kheldians is epic, so what is that?
Epic: 1)Noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS or events is narrated in elevated style.
2) Heroic, majestic, impressively great
3) of unusually great size or extent
Prove the person "meets those requirements" or has that knowledge. You can't. All it takes is something of the appropriate side at 50 - whether they slogged through it in issue 1, took years to get there, or sat at the door in a farm for a few hours.Quote:Yes, this is true with the Kheldians themselves, but is it to be exclusively that, and the person controlling them needs none of the same requirements? I personally don't think so. As a reward at reaching level 50, a person has shown a series of great achievements, has shown these same traits. They will have a knowledge of the world of CoH that a person who has only reached level 20 can not have. (This is NOT referring to people who exploit aspects of the game, but those who play through the content as intended. Decisions for game content should not be determined by those that utilize exploitation for gain. That is something for developers to work on eliminating, and an entirely different issue altogether.)
50 != "veteran," as you're trying to imply here. You can get to 50, without PLing, in 100-200 hours these days. Not *really* all that long. And it certainly doesn't mean you're exposed to all aspects of the game, or even a hint about Kheld lore for that matter.Quote:That is my opinion, I feel veterans efforts are being completely disregarded, no different than if veteran playtime rewards were given to new players, and I think it is a horrible choice by the developers.
FWIW, if you'd look in the Kheldian forum, you'll notice a discussion on this as well. I personally don't mind it being lowered - even the devs have said 50 was a mistake - but I'm more of the "30 would be better" crowd. -
Not sure where you get that sense - some people have problems. But some people had problems on Vista, some had problems on XP. Overall, yeah, it works on Win7 (I'm running it on Win7 Home Premium x64 now, and have run it on Win7 since the public beta, pre-release candidate, without issues.)
-
Yeah. Especially with being able to save the costumes now (generally one of the more time-consuming bits that people don't want to lose,) I see no reason to do anything but reroll.
(I have exactly one character that wouldn't work for - and that's because they have the original pointy-ear face and malaise pants. Of course, they also can't ever change that first outfit... which is a shame.) -
Quote:Incorrect. Running Win7 x64 here, running primarily 32 bit software. The only issue I've had as far as "bit-ness" is Internet Explorer x64, since there's no 32 bit version of Flash - but since I use firefox anyway, it's not an issue.64 bit blocks out all 32 bit software. i do not know why all these people cannot correct it?
Sounds overall like you had a bad computer. (And really.... a netbook? I hope you weren't trying to game on that thing.) If they tried forcing through features that should've been disabled on a specific level of hardware, well... -
Actually, Positron put out (preliminary) information (pre-holidays) on what would run ultra mode. Copied into the Paragon Wiki:
After demoing the Ultra-mode at HeroCon, one of the most frequently asked questions we have been receiving is “what are the video cards you recommend to get the most out of Ultra-mode?” With the holiday season coming up, we asked the programmers in charge of implementing the features of Ultra-mode what they would recommend. We would like to forward this information on to you so you can better work on your holiday shopping lists.
If you are looking to spend under US$100, then an NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we don’t have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings.
If you are looking to spend between $100 and $200, the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 260 will do you well. We don’t have numbers from the Radeon 57xx series yet to verify if that is better or worse though. This would end up somewhere in the middle of Ultra-mode quality.
Finally if you are going to spend over $200, the GeForce GTX 285 is an excellent choice. We don’t have numbers from the Radeon 58xx series yet. This would be able to run Ultra-mode with the quality maxed out (except we have no data on Anti-aliasing, so caveat emptor when it comes to that specific feature).
Note: This is based on our current internal testing and might change by the time Going Rogue is released. Also, a video card is not the ONLY thing you should take into consideration. Your PC having a decent processor and memory will also enhance your performance. As we continue to test and get more information available we will update you. I hope this helps, and happy holidays!
Personally, I put a Radeon HD 5770 into my new system - we'll see what happens when I fire that up. -
Quote:I wonder if that's part of the attitude difference. (Of course, part of that is going to be "dependant on player" no matter what, so...)^Agreed. Personally I really don't care. If someone was so wanting to play a Kheld, they probably would've just PL'd a character to 50 anyway. No "hard work" would've been invovled.
When I was playing my first character, my goal wasn't to unlock a Kheldian, it was just to enjoy him. People will still do that. Besides, getting to 50 is such a breeze now, it's not like getting one is really all that special.
I got my first 50, an Elec/Elec/Fire blaster, to 50 in 500-some hours (as I recall) playing from Issue 3 to Issue 4. Somewhere in the teens, probably in the Hollows, I saw my first Peacebringer and said "I want one!" Just for the sheer coolness of it. I didn't get PL'd up to get it - it was my first run through most of the content of the game, after all - but we also had a bit of a content lack from about 38-40 (and double today's debt cap, no debt relief indoors, debt starting earlier, etc.) So, for me - while I didn't PL up to get it - there were times it was as much of a draw and a "nudge" to keep going as seeing what "new stuff" was going on with the contacts in the next level range.
So, yeah, for me it was special. (And just flying around Outbreak was incredibly worth it - I think that's the *most* time I've spent in Outbreak, even counting attempts to get Isolator.) Now, yeah, my goal - like you said - was to enjoy that blaster as well, not "rush to get a Kheld," but it was - to me - a reward.
The game's so much different *now,* though, that that mindset doesn't really fit. Debt? Who cares unless you're a badger? There's so much debt relief, XP smoothing, XP acceleration (we had no 'double xp weekends,' for one) that I'm surprised if I hit the 200 hour mark on a new character getting to 50. And that's *not* all just "experience with how to play." That's just overall acceleration. -

Quote:I agree with Nightshade on everything, but have to bring this up.3. Revamps of Boomtown, Crey's Folly and especially the Shadow Shard.
When brought up at Herocon, the Shard was mentioned as a *LOT* of work - which, it is. Four huge zones to add stuff in - and a reason they don't "like" revamping old (as opposed to giving us new) content.
That said - I think that dev statement is greatly unfair. It's like complaining about the gas mileage of American cars by pointing at one of those jet-powered funnycars that burns, what, 20-30 gallons a second or something. Yes, it's an extreme example of the work that would be needed. And I don't think it'd be argued that it WOULD be a lot of work - but using it as a reason NOT to? Poor.
If the Shard were revamped, I'd expect it to be a (long delay) issue of its own, with corresponding events and contacts in both Paragon and the Isles. (Whether it would touch Praetoria... I don't know. I think it'd be a bit odd to.)
Of all the old hazard zones, I'd like to see (in order)
- Perez. Just chop down the damn forest. Really. War Witch, dear, you mentioned relocating mission entrances, so why do my level 10s get sent deep into the maze, while my 40-50s get missions around the edge?
- Dark Astoria. SO. MUCH. STORY that could be done in here! So much potential! A three way supernatural war, for all intents and purposes (or two way with the Tsoo stuck in the middle - see "Tsoo Faced" in AE. It's old, but there.) I've wanted to see this redone for so long, really building on the atmosphere and exploring its history!
- Crey's... I'm "eh" about. Mostly because it just needs "something there," but it - to me - has never been all that inspiring of a zone. OTOH... Praetorian/Primal DE meetup in this toxic wasteland...
- Boomtown. One, I want the "Destined for valHalla" left alone
but other than that, I'd love to see a multi-issue progression done here, reclaiming the zone, showing some progress. Threw a proposal about that up over a year ago, still wouldn't mind seeing it.

Quote:Preorder is not "Paid extra," unless the store you got it from ripped you off or you couldn't prove you'd preordered anything. So, no, that isn't a precedent. In fact, we were told *from the outset* (with the COV preorder helmets) that they would very probably give them away "at some point in the future." (Pre-COV release, so there were no vet rewards at the time.)I dunno. They did do the Pre-Order costume stuff for CoV, and the special sprint powers. CoV was also "given" to all CoH players that had never purchased the Expandalone, and CoH was "given" to all CoV players that had never purchased CoH. So the precedent is set for paid stuff from the past to be given away for free.
COV/COH is an... odd event. My suspicion? Well, it was done with the buyout. NCSoft management thought it was ridiculous, especially with things like the GvE edition, and combined them. Bases might have had part to do with that, as well.
Plus, you'll note that even WITH the combined game (essentially the GvE edition,) nobody got the GVE goodies that didn't pay for them (either via edition or NCSoft store.)
All that said, I'm not in the least against a "collectors pack" that gave the CE in-game stuff away for $10. Yes, I paid extra. I paid full (what was it, $70? Higher?) price for COV CE and I still don't mind. Plus, I have the physical goodies (several sets of heroclix, art books, etc.)

Quote:Congrats, you realize what a noisy few refuse to. They could reword it as "Millionaire" and it would have just as big an impact on my taxes as "Forum cartel" does on any "influence" supposedly wielded over the direction of the game.I'm pretty sure that 'Forum Cartel' is just a label applied to people who have a certain large number of posts. I don't think it is an actual organization.
There's not even agreement within this so-called "cartel" - any agreement is because the individual *posting* the agreement, well, agrees. Or agrees with some modifications. Of course, being *individuals,* you'll also find people with the "Forum cartel" label DISagreeing as well - sometimes vehemently.
But, no, pushing some paranoid conspiracy theory that there's this tiny amount of players in a shadowy "Forum Cartel" with incredible influence over the game lets a few, like Tank up there, pretend they're a lone voice crying out against their oppressors - when in fact, all they're doing is crying.
